Short YYZ tribute to Neil Peart
Short YYZ tribute to Neil Peart. I hadn't played YYZ in a long time. It was a little rough. Sorry for the timing issues at the beginning. I was playing along with a track with no click. I tried to guess at the start point and tempo. Didn't miss it by much.

Messing around with EZDrummer3
Переглядів 19414 днів тому
I uploaded a video about using EZDrummer3. Had some questions about how it sounds. I'm getting pretty excited about the possibilities. It's like breathing new life in to a 24 year old Roland set.

I’ve been learning about VSTs. Got an old MacBook set up with EZDrummer3 and I have to say, I’m pretty excited.

7/4 double bass pattern
Переглядів 111Місяць тому
I sat down and just heard this pattern. I didn’t realize it was 7/4 until I counted it out after recording. Sorry for the sloppy timing. I just wanted to get this recorded to hang on to it so I didn’t forget it.
Sound testing - Feedback appreciated

Part of my recent drumming journey is learning to capture and mix good audio. I'm a huge rookie when it comes to putting mics on drums. I did a whole bunch of changes in my Zoom L20 this week. I imported all of the tracks in to FCPX. I added some bass and brightness and some reverb. I also panned the toms and overheads for the first time. I know it's not Logic Pro kind of stuff but that's next ...
Fun drum pattern.

This pattern sort of popped up today. I wanted to record it so I don't forget it. It needs a little more development. I want to get the left foot more involved with another sound. More to come, maybe.

If CDs could wear out, I would have burned a hole in this one when it came out. Still an amazing album that has stood the test of time.

Beautiful kit.
You need a better mix... bass drum is distorted.
He's working on it. Lol.
@@jables3377 No doubt. I did this really quick and was not happy with it at all. I stink at recording.
Nice!
Thank you for posting the video. A suggestion I would make is try very simple VST library like handy drums 2.0 you don’t have to menu dive with it and you can try the demo. Another older VST but still quite nice is addictive drums 2, but I find the best sounding one although it’s very convoluted and complicated is the DWE sound works, but you have to use it through rolling cloud and I had tons of problems with getting it running on my Mac or my PC. Again, the one I like the best is Goran grooves handy drums V2, with the Yamaha studio drums, and Ludwig studio drums. It is just a simple set and forget it with a decent demo. Thanks again for the video and I’m glad you could breathe new life into the unit and help reduce E waste.
Thank you for that. I have so much to learn.
I'm appreciative of your sharing. You seem to encounter the same problems I do.
May I have the measurements of the bass drum?
16 X 22
I myself just prefer having an aux closed HH on the right, but this looks like a killer product
Can't get enough of that awesome shell color!
No doubt. I got hooked on these as soon as I saw them.
What's the measurements of the bass drum? Please and thank you

What was wrong with the snare drum?
@@haydenelder1365 It was the basket, not the drum itself.
@basementdrumlab 😂
That looks great! I mean the rack setup, not the crushed snare basket tube 😂. I know what a mission it must have been trying to do that. I wanted to do the same thing. 🎉🎉🎉
Great sound.
Hey I did not know you were a drummer too! I think I saw a Rush sign in a 4xe video. Living Color are fantastic and I really like Will Calhoun's drumming. He has a busy left hand with all of those HHT scoops! Nice job and nice kit.
@@louisficarra5861 Yeah, this is my other hobby when I can’t go Jeeping.
You used a Gibraltar rack system. Was there a reason you didnt buy the Tama? Just curious because I plan on this upgrade as well.
I had a Tama Rack in the early 90s and loved it. When I went to build this set, I just didn't feel like Tama had advanced as well as Gibraltar. It felt like the Tame hard ware of the 90s hadn't really advanced that much. It just seemed like Gibraltar had a lot more options and versatility.
Im planning to do this as well. Wish there was a completel list of part numbers for this modification. Tama's website doesnt show photos so I have no idea what's actually needed.
I did a Google search of the Tama rims and found the part numbers. When I gave those to my local drum shop, he found them in his catalogs. Yes, he still uses catalogs.
almost keep practicing you're close dude
MAN, I missed a lot. That kit is HUGE.
The pedal I want the cymbals I want. This video is what dreams are made of haha
sick kit man
Gibraltar rack?
What’s your mixer are you using to record on?
Love the carpet,,,,,,u must be filthy rich🤑
If I was filthy rich I'd have a much bigger room for the drums.
They have remote hi hat 5000 series too
I haven't been able to find any information on a 5000 series remote HH on any store website or anything. Do you have any links? I can't even find one on eBay.
🔥🔥🤟
Great Playing! Loved your Dw 9000 video and came for more content. Cheers!
@@andresaguilar327 Sorry I haven’t posted a lot recently. Things have been a little crazy.
Also subbed. I love your channel.
@@sp1epiphany I hope to get some new content going again. Life has been what life will be at times.
Do you have links for the die cast hoops and the the star cast mounting system so I can convert my performer over as well
@@sp1epiphany I don’t have a link. I had to special order them through my local music store. I couldn’t find anyone selling them on line. In fact, they had to ship them from the factory.
@@basementdrumlab thank you for the information. I really appreciate it. I’ll go through my local dealer then and have them ordered. Beautiful kit btw.
Will this work with DW drums too?
What kind of mics are you using? Bought a Starclassic set last year and am in the process of piecing together stuff for my drum studio. Bought an audio interface but can't decide on mics.
They are just some Behringer mics. I bought two drum set kits from Sweetwater. They aren’t anything fancy. I think this is the kit: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BC1200--behringer-bc1200-professional-7-piece-drum-microphone-set I bought two sets. I used two of the overheads for overheads then used the other two on my HH and ride. So I actually had almost the right number of mics.
Intro riff sounds exactly like ‘Water’s Edge” by Seven Mary Three
Doesn't mounting toms by the hoops detune them?
I haven’t seen any issues with it. The toms are pretty light too.
Thanks! @@basementdrumlab
Every day is tuning day for me.
When a production sends me out as a drumtech for building a drummers new rack, they would ask me how long it is going to take. I'll need two days. One for unwrapping the Gibraltar stuff and one for the actual built. :D
Too funny.
🙌 so cool!
Shit pedals. The Tama Dyna sync shits on them
I'm just listening on my phone speaker, but I think you could make snare and bass more prominent than ride for a different dynamic balance. Any other thoughts are more about personal preferences, so... irrelevant.
It looks like you’re using a Gibraltar rack. How the heck do you get floor toms to hang on the rack without twisting down when you play on them? How do they support all that weight if you crank those clamps down they dent your tubing
Amazingly enough, it doesn’t dent the tubes. I have them cranked but not as hard as you’d think. They aren’t as heavy as some floor toms I’ve felt.
Yah I ended up getting a couple Gibraltar SC-GCML 1.5 drum rack memory locks. One on each side of the mounting clamp. This helps a great deal and allows me to tighten at a reasonable amount to avoid denting the rack bar.
@@codersexpo1580 That’s a smart idea. I might have to copy that and put additional memory clamps on the other side of the main clamps.
Super.Poland drummer 😊
sounds great, id only reomend overheads, the tuning to be a bit higher on the 2 high toms, and some muffeling with the kick drums.
Add some more EQ on the toms and I would put studio heads or at least some gels on them. They'll sound super tight!
I mostly agree but the 1st tom sounds tight, the rest sound too loose to me.
@@applelandry4233 I’m thinking it’s the bottom heads. I replaced all the factory heads with E2s but I still have the factory bottom heads. I tried to get a better tonal spread across all of the toms but they felt choked off after doing it. Watched a lot of videos about tone and how important the quality of those reso heads is. So I may have to do that to get the range I’m looking for.
@@basementdrumlab yes! Absolutely! I use the clear genera's and the thinnest snare heads (for both sides) I can get. My studio setup is nowhere near as sophisticated as yours and I've definitely recorded with sound engineers who "fix" my tones, particularly the toms, but I like to hear what it'll sound like as I'm playing. And having matching heads on the top and bottom for the toms and, surprising for me, having the correct bass heads & mallet really improve the sound and creates a better opportunity for the engineer to pick up what'll eventually be eq'd. I'm not a sound engineer, just your basic "I count to 4!" drummer and I could be using the wrong words here so I hope this all makes sense.
The kick needs to have a less ambient more punchy sound. Toms sound good. Snare to me needs to be tuned higher but that just my preference. Cymbal vol could come down a bit .
On the kicks, I’m trying to figure out if it’s the room. I haven’t sound treated the room at all. I’m also trying to not put a hole in the front head. I’m using wood beaters to try to get the punch back that I’m loosing without a front head port. I’ve also seen where some sound engineers mix the batter head and the reso head on basses to get the punch back.
Like what was said, overheads are too loud. Hi hat is too loud also. The lower 2 floor toms are too low for me and the China sided too low to me. Also, the snare sounded flat, almost like hitting paper.
H8r
@@Mongoliantreecoware you dumb? I'm not hating at all. He asked for feedback and his levels are off.
That snare is weird. I can’t capture the sound that I hear when I’m sitting there and I have mics on top and on bottom. I’m going to crank the head some more and I’ve ordered a different mic. The HH is bugging me too. It’s like the 13s cut through so much that it jumps way out in the mix. I’m wondering if I need to move my overheads back a little. They are above my shoulders and I’m wondering if they are too close to mix well. I panned those floor toms for the first time on this video but I didn’t think to bring them up after panning. Great feedback, by the way. It really helps to have additional ears.
Portnoy setup..
It’s more Simon Phillips inspired but yeah, Portnoy too.
@@basementdrumlab simon phil. Cymbal stand Y shape 😅..
Turn down your overhead mics some and bring up kick drums a bit. My opinion but looks great! I’m hoping to start making some new videos soon.
If you want a natural "unprocessed" sound, then what you have is pretty close. If you want it to hit harder like a rock or metal kit, toms could use compression, EQ, and gates to dial back some of the "floppy" Hawaii 5-0 sound and bring out the BOOM and the tails while controlling mic bleed (plugins like JST Tominator can make gating and de-bleeding a much easier and faster process), EQ and compression (and gate) on the snare to bring out the snare "crack" and to accentuate the good frequencies. Overheads are set very well currently but could maybe use a little more compression to taste once the rest of the kit is dialed. Also, it's very important to mix in the context of the full mix, not solo tracks or solo instruments (unless it a solo track obviously). I love your setup and wish I could rip on it myself. Keep rocking my friend
Alright! Thank you! This makes a lot of sense. Thank you for taking the time to put that together for me. That’s super helpful because I can hear what you are talking about and didn’t have the understanding of how to “fix” it.
this sound awesome just i would maybe tight a bit the snare and pitch up it, but that's your personal choice or preferences
It’s like I can’t capture the sound that my ears hear when I’m sitting there next to it. I even have a mic underneath. I’m going to have to try cranking it beyond what my ear likes and see if it records better. So much to learn.
@@basementdrumlab that are fun exercises that learn you so much stuff
Definitely needs some comp. Also bring down the cymbals/overheads just a bit. See if you can add some comp to that snare and give it some life. Otherwise, great stuff!
Yeah, the snare feels buried in the mud. I even put a second mic on the bottom head. Still couldn’t get it to pop out. I think I’m going to have to crank up the top head more too. I need to learn more about compression.
Sounds AWESOME. Nice tight groove too. As someone else mentioned and you've already acknowledged, tighter crackier snare (also just my preference). Also, thats your hi hat on your right, right? Love that! Beautiful kit and great playing, man. Keep it up!
I really appreciate the additional ears. It really helps.
Some compression on the bus and a gate for the condenser mics and it'll be golden
This is stuff I need to learn about. I understand enough to know what you’re talking about but putting in to action is some stuff I need to experiment with.
@@basementdrumlab of course, but I mean the experimentation is the fun part. Nothing beats the feeling of finally setting the sound you wanted from the start. All the best mate, cannot wait to hear some covers from ya.
All of these drums are tuned too low. The cymbals sound great.
Funny you should say that. I have been wrestling with that very thing. I tried bringing them up but the tone started getting choked off. I replaced all of the top factory heads with E2s but I didn’t replace the bottom heads. I think that’s where my issue is.
