I like how you guys actually shared your thoughts on the results. I think the tom mounted on the kick is probably getting a sympathetic vibrational boost from the kick drum hence the extra resonance.
The biggest difference comes when mounting 2 Toms off a bass drum I think, as sometimes one drum can ‘rob’ the others tone/resonant Mounting one Tom off a bass drum is fairly consistent with mounting off a stand I’d say. I think (personally) that’s why when buying a higher end kit, the bass drum mount has been removed I can also hear a difference in my bass drum when the toms are not mounted to it Just my opinions! Great video as always 👍
Had my rack Tom’s on a rack and they sounded great. Moved back to mount on bass drum and they sound equally great. Of course I never bothered to compare the two but I’m not disappointed. The only difference now is that my 8 inch Tom went from being on a rack to a regular time mount type stand and I think it’s fine there. I was more concerned about the bass drum sound putting the times back on here and I don’t think it was affected. I have thought about mounting my three rack times on tom stands but so far have not
I love the sound of the tight snare basket! It just sounds tight! I like a tight sounding Tom 😅 having said that the loose basket is a good happy medium between sustain and punch
Great videos chaps, you can hear the tom resonance being dampened a fair bit in the snare basket tight compared to the loose fitting. On top of the bass drum & off the cymbal stand,I feel there's not a difference to the human ear. As for toms being mounted directly into the bass drum,my opinion there's no difference, I've tried both over the years and as Ryan said it seems to be coming back with drilled bass drums. I have recently bought the new version of the Yamaha Stage Cutom in Raven black. I feel they've got it right ,awesome resonance on the shallow toms n the nodal points etc. Totally agree about the screw up fills you make than the actual resonance. Choosing the right heads is key too. Thanks guys😊😉😉👍
The other big variable would be the type of tom mount (through the shell or clamped on the rim) my pearl vision normally sounded better on a snare stand because pearl's iso mount made the top head really tough to get even tension on. To combat the resonance issue with the snare basket, I'd put cymbal felts under wear the bottom hoop contacts the snare basket. (Makeshift little booty shakers)
in a band situation you'll never hear the difference, you'll only notice if the drums have bad sound to begin with. in a studio as long as your drums sound good as these are, it is up to the drummer how he wants to mount his toms, and you can always control them in the mix, it also comes down on how comfortable you are with playing them, which means you will play them better , rock on drum brothers
This has been an age-old dilemma for me....... I presently have five kits set up in my house..... All of them in the standard three-piece configuration with the exception a Gretsch USA which has two floor toms..... All of them except one have the rack Tom in a snare stand.... One exception is a 13 by 9 suspended from a drum rack..... Truthfully it's the only one that has a sound that I like...... Or rather it's the only one that has the sound that I don't absolutely despise..... I'm fully convinced that rack Toms in general sound like they are grunted from elephant rectums..... Floor toms on the other hand can be left in a garage for four decades, covered with heaps of junk, and you can dig them out ....scrape off a few layers of geologic strata and hit them without any tuning and they sound amazing and resonate beautifully...... But your demonstration here has shown me that using snare stands for Tom Tom's may be defeating the very goal I am after.... Which is a lot of resonance..... And yes you are absolutely correct in saying that I do this for Aesthetics..... I think its cool to stand and gaze across the room at the three-piece configuration with the rack Tom in a snare stand..... I need to decide whether I want it to look cool or sound good I guess.... right now I'm still clinging to the look cool and sound crappy..... Literally just received a Ludwig classic maple today..... I had already bought a snare stand to accommodate the 13 by 9...... Now I need to decide if I really want to use it...... I bought the kit because every demo I've watched the toms resonate so nicely..... I hope I'm not going to squelch the good sound by using that basket.... Thanks for the good video.....
They definitely can, especially if you’re tightening it on the rim. If you’re letting the drum sit on the stand without it being clamped on, it does resonate better. Same for the snare in general.
The science is extremely ignorant here, this particular tom already has a restricted shell with all that hardware attached; mostly decorative. Then again, people need to make money from selling shitey products. The planer the shell, the better the resonance.

Nope I don’t agree
Excellent video.
For me the look and sound of toms in baskets is not for my personal taste. This video confirms the sound issue conclusively.

Great video guys, just subscribed and loving the channel

Interesting , If I mount 12" and 13" toms on snare baskets (loose) the sustain is ridiculously long vs the twin tom mounts.
My tom hanging on stand..sounds like crap..LIFT it abit..sounds amazing.
I love seeing drummers who talk about resonance and have moongel or other dampening on them XD.
try to put booty shaker on snare stand ,and u will see different ,mutch better sound ...

We're glad the video was useful to you Andrew! Enjoy the new kit, regardless of rack tom mounting dilemma 😅
Kick mount sounds the best
Take the tape off the ride cymbal will you
Snare stands kill toms.
