    I am in Australia and have a 1999 Ford Fairmont station wagon. Due to its age I got my mechanic to check all of the earth points on the car to make sure they were clean and effective. It found one suspect lead that he replaced and he said i was the first person to have ever asked him to do a full check of earths. I do purchasing in an electronics company and see that grounding problems are common so to me it was a no brainer. Thanks for your videos I am enjoying them very much.

    I had this exact same thing happen to me with a Fiat Punto. After I replaced the starter motor, I had that sinking feeling in my stomach when I turned the key and nothing happened. I Only did voltage checks on the positive side which I'm assuming is what your friend did. I only found the fault (all but 3 or 4 wires were broken on the ground cable connecting the transmission case to body to battery) when I did a voltage drop test on the negative side... its a mistake I will never make again and I'm sure your friend won't either💪. High resistance on the ground cable is a fault I found on 3 other cars that didn't fully activate the starter motor.
    I've been binge watching your videos for the last 2 days and I have to say that every one of them has been outstanding. Keep up the good work!👍

      Its actually a verry comman problem with fiat's,after 20 years in the brand i have replaced at least 30 of those cables!the diagnose with the jumper cable is the best test you can do,i had one where i did a resistance measuring from negative on the battary to the starter housing an it was fine,the cable was olso fine but the car would not crank.it did crank with the starter cable attached so after taking off the ground wire at the gearbox and screwing out the bolt it connects to in the gearbox you could see burn in marks on the treads off the bolt!it had ground on the gearbox but could not draw the current it needed to turn the starter.

    Thanks for the info. Dan . Worth noting is to always use HEAVY jumper cables . I worked from 1970 - 1980 at a starter/alternator rebuilder . I can't tell you how many times an auto parts store would do a " test " with thin cables and the rebuilts did not work properly . They are " tight " with new bushings , etc. If the battery is a little low , combined with the thin , $ 9.95 cables - you get the idea . I would take the starter and ground the body to the negative post and jump the positive with a HEAVY BATTERY cable . Maximum amps for the test . Less voltage drop . Heavy cables can get you started where the cheapos fail . The newer permanent magnet , gear reduction starters may use less amps and rely more on torque than rpms to get the job done . But there is nothing like HEAVY copper cables to get that power to it . Jumping out BOTH power and ground can save a ton of time and money . Bill .

    A much easier way to check for engine or gearbox earth strap problems without the need for raising the car would be to do a volt drop from the negative battery post to the starter housing or gearbox and crank, anything more than 0.2-0.5 volts means you have a bad earth. You can do the same from the battery positive to the starter positive for both terminal 50 and 30, quick and simple test. Saves the shop time and money, try it out on a video Dan. The circuit must be loaded to get a good test. You will wonder why you didn’t do this before as it is so easy.

    Cant believe the previous shop missed that cable... before u even mentioned it.... i seen it. Its an obvious one...& is common on passats etc... Also... always have that cable undone when having the gearbox out for clutch work... so condtion can be easily checked on that... or cleaned etc. Its a simple spot/fix for a shop to miss !!! But there we are. The best tech fixed it again 😁

    I had exactly the same problem on a Peugeot 207 1.6 Diesel. The poor earth between the starter and the bell housing caused by someone leaving a cable tie to hold the earth wire and retaining bolt together had not been removed. It and was reassembled crushing the cable tie between the earthing clamp and the bell housing. Over time the bolt worked loose (as it was not secured) causing a bad earth (and not charging the battery as well) so after a week the battery was flat.

    I dunno about newer gen vag vehicles but made in the same era as a mk4 golf immo system cranked the engine and it would start then cut out within seconds,
    Did have a mk1 1.9 sdi caddy we did a engine swap on, it cranked and would not start, no fault codes on any ecm, had to go in to coding and resave the value (effective soft reset of the immo controller which i think was 017 instruments) and boom the engine fired right up

    Solid way of diagnosing.
    Would have been a good opportunity to show how to do a voltage drop test on both the power side and the ground side to also narrow down which could be the issue. Then again, it didn't seem to have enough ground to even get the solenoid to click this time. But, it could have still shown something I'm sure.

    It is important when you check the fat battery power wire to the starter, that you turn the key to the crank position to put a current load on the fat cable. Sometimes you will observe 12V when the key is off, but when you crank the key, the voltage will drop significantly lower, say to 4V. However, if this was the case here, your bypass test with the black booster cable would not have worked.

  • @edwinvp
    @edwinvp 4 роки тому

    Zou de kabel (nog verder) kapot zijn gegaan omdat die oude startmotor al excessief veel stroom begon te trekken? Zo heb ik laatst gezien bij een buurman met lege accu dat de ene startkabel wel werkt maar de andere weer niet. De slechte kabel valt niet door de mand bij een weerstandsmeting maar heeft wel een kleinere diameter (minder stroom). En dan was de auto nog niet eens een diesel.

    Another great video! Diagnose Dan is the only site really worth looking at and while watching it, its like doing a Sudoku puzzle. But as you were measuring the voltage at the starter, I quickly noticed the ground strap on the transmission (I'm an electronics technologist). When you start dealing in over 100 amp draw which is what a starter can draw (and higher if it is very cold outside), every bit of resistance in a cable, be it a positive or a negative cable, makes a difference. You get a voltage drop across that resistance (aluminum oxide) and that means less power or no power to the starter. In a 14V system, you can afford a maximum 0.5V drop from source to load. Also, I tend to repair things as a home mechanic (too time consuming for a shop, I realize that). Here is a starter that I rebuilt for my friend's Porsche 997. Look at the commutators. No wonder it was slow to turn over or it would not turn over at all. edelweiss.smugmug.com/Cars/Porsche-Technical-Stuff/Porsche-997-Starter/

    Nog geluk dat de de kabelboom niet is opgesmeuld.. heb ik ooit gehad met als oorzaak ook een kabelbreuk in de dikke massakabel naar de motor toe

    • @Diagnosedan
      @Diagnosedan  6 років тому +2

      Passat Tdi stroom zal inderdaad een weg naar massa proberen te vinden, als er dan te veel stroom door een te dunne draad gaat kan deze inderdaad overbelast raken.⚡⚡⚠️

  • @1atech

    Why do you have to disable ignition system to do starter voltage drop test? You need to put engine in crank position(current flowing) to do voltage drop test.

    • @Diagnosedan
      @Diagnosedan  5 років тому

      I'm not sure what you mean, please explain

    • @1atech
      @1atech 5 років тому +1

      When doing a voltage drop test on a starter, WHY do you have to disable the ignition system? To do a voltage drop test, the circuit MUST be loaded--correct?

    • @Diagnosedan
      @Diagnosedan  5 років тому

      @@1atech yes the circuit needs to be loaded but I'm not sure why you are talking about disabeling the ignition. The car was already not cranking. Are you talking about a relative compression test?

    • @1atech
      @1atech 5 років тому +1

      no. Some YOUTube mechanics say you MUST disable the ignition system or fuel pump in order to do a voltage drop test on a starter. That doesn't make sense to me. That is why I wrote you(BIG FAN of yours)!!
