  • Today we are talking about failures of the VW Tiguan. The failures of the Tiguan are rather minor, other than issues with the 2.0T TSI engine. That is where most of the failures come from. I left out many of the TSI engine failures from this video. Check out the video I did on TSI engine failures.

      Bought a brand-new 2017 Tiguan SEL, front wheel drive. We have 2400 miles on it and my wife has told me three times she has felt a slight jolt like somebody bumped her from behind. Any ideas what that could be from. All three times she was completely stopped with her foot on the brake at idle before driving on. Does this car have dry dual clutch automatic type issues like you hear about with Fords. She never got any kind of failure light indications. Thanks for all your great videos. We love Tiguans!

    I own a 2010 Tiguan and a 2010 GTI. This video covered 60% of the issues I have had. The oil from the PVC or whatever Volkswagen calls it leaked on the water pump. The clogged sunroof drain, the oil cooler leak (slight bent line rubbed and cut the line) , rear main seal (both). Thanks for this, my GTI has an issue with I start sometimes and it does. My guess? Fuel pump beginning to fail ?

    • @SmallEngineVelocity
      @SmallEngineVelocity 3 роки тому +2

      And the GTI had the hydraulic chain tensioner went out. Went ahead and rebuilt the head while I was at it. Also the turbo valve , I don’t know exactly what it’s called, I broke and I went ahead and replaced the entire turbo. I’m keeping this GTI forever but this Tiguan for my wife is pretty awesome.

    I've changed a few of those sun roofs (50-100's), and in most cases the leak was where the frame is glued together in the front corners.
    Very common problem on the diesel tiguans (cbab engine) is the turbo regulator, causing a vacuum leak.

    In the ~5 years I had one, we had just about all of these. I'm pretty sure the only reason we didn't have a sunroof leak is because we didn't have a sunroof. I just about lit it on fire when our tensioner went out. Luckily no catastrophic damage (or I would have for sure). Also lucky our RMS hadn't blown. New owner is probably dealing with that now or already did.

    Hi, I had to come back to you again because I know you are best with VW Tiguan.
    I am hearing a sound for about 3 seconds just before full stop, a sound like jet engine shutting off, not loud. This started right after I drained the transmission fluid from the pan and refilled the exact amount of fluid that I drained. Other than this strange gear shutting sound, my 2011 Tiguan run smooth and nice. I had to drain the fluid in order to remove the transmission fluid pan when I had to replace the lower control arms. Only thing I did not do is not using those computer software when I refilled. I warmed up the transmission pan to body temperature when I refilled the fluid and stopped refilling when the overflow tube stopped dripping.
    My first question is if the transmission gears make any sound like that when the automatic transmission shifts down to lowest gear when the fluid level is not perfect?
    My second question is if the check engine light comes on when the transmission fluid level is not perfect?
    I appreciate your help on these.

I'm taking it in on Monday. I hope I didn't buy a complete lemon. What are your thoughts? First it was a vacuum leak, next it was a rear seal oil leak, third time it was a gasket...lols! 2013 Tiguan SEL, LEATHER ehated seats, had air noise on sun roof, rubber gasket was distorted, reposition it, no more noise, had none of any problems, oh, the gas lock solenoid got dirty and would stick, , couldn't open gas flap, but got it popped open, no damage to door, dealer had the solenoid in stock, I asked, happens more than once, he jokes, that's why we have them in stock..it's a small motor, not much power, so slight debris on shaft kills it, easy to replace, I did it myself one screw under rubber outside, reaching in between trunk rug, and quarter panel to push wire and grommet in, was the hardest part, not bad, connect wire, works great

      There are a few things that need to be addressed if you buy an old one. They are okay... just okay. That comes from someone who owns one. Well we are leasing one. I do think I would like it less if we owned it. But knowing we can give the keys back in a year is nice.

    The one recurring issue I'm having with a 2013 S model with under 25k miles, is the low turbo boost mil reading. I've replaced the gate valve with the result being a more distinct shift, but the mil still comes on. The car went the whole winter without an issue, but in the summer heat with or without the a/c on, mostly under an uphill load, that pesky light comes back on and I've added Water Wetter to the expansion tank with no difference. Is there a pressure sensor that might cause this?

    Hey man! Awesome videos! I'm thinking of grabbing a 2011 Tiguan with 60,000 miles on it. Car drove like a dream and started up great. My only concern is I see a lot of water pump, turbo, and timing complaints on these Tiguans right around the 60,000 mark. Would you say those are rare, probably user inflicted cases? (Too long between oil changes, etc.) or would you advise to stay away from the vehicle all together? The vehicle had one owner, and driven an average of only 6000 miles a year. Thanks a lot!

      I currently own a 2011 fwd Tiguan 2.0t. it is a very fun car! Faster than most road cars, fat enough for whatever ya need. However, they have a recall for a timing chain tensioner that could nuke the engine in that mile range. Also, fwd is shit with turbo and weight, so it is not too good in the rain.... Mine's had two crashes at low speeds simply because ABS didn't kick in or traction control couldn't handle the weight of the SUV. If you live in a fair weather area you're golden!

    Live in remote area where snow and ice big problem but my wife each have a Tiguan and love the way they handle the snow and ice. Very sporty and one at 145000 km and the other at 187000 km and we plan on keeping them into the 300000 plus range at least. If you do regular maintenance and don’t drive like an asshole they run well. Yes had some of these issues but so did most other cars we have had.

    My 2009 tiguan has about 115000 km on it, and now needs (for the third time) a new water pump. I recently spent about $1500 on replacing my old manifold and fixing something in the gearbox (if I recall I don't know). The tig still needs that new pump, new suspensions and I don't know what. Yep, not the most reliable vehicle, but still a fun and quick VW.

    • @geoffswanson9696
      @geoffswanson9696 6 років тому +1

      It is a pain in the butt the first time and will take you 2X as long as if you did it a 2nd time. All the battle is trying to figure out the best method to remove/install the manifold support bracket. Humble mechanic has a video called replacing the intake manifold. This will take you all the way down to the water pump and from there you can figure it out.
      In order to get the support bracket off, remove the small hose that goes to the water pump before you even try.
      If you do this it is very easy to take it out and install it.
      You also should move the two coolant lines that connect to the one mentioned above. You don't have to remove any of them completely , but you need to be able to move them off to the drivers side of the engine compartment. It will save you many a bad word and time doing it the way I described.

    I have a 2012 2.0 Tiguan (Pacific, 4Motion, TSI) and have seen 2 of these 5.
    Intake manifold is throwing an engine light with no engine performance issues.
    Water pump went out - twice. It's plastic and just cracked, gushing coolant out. 2nd time the mechanic put an aluminium one in and no problems since.
    Otherwise, it also burns oil - needs a top up every 1,000-2,000 kms, and the PCV Valve seal went out as well as the oil fill cap seal causing a vaccum leak.

    My employer has 50-60 Tiguans, they are driven around 50000km a year, around half of that is with a 1500kg+ trailer attatched and the rest stop and go never more than 2 km between stops.
    They have so far had no really bad faults, other than beeing too small for 5 grown men. The rear door is too small for getting large workboots in and out quickly and the center cupholder in the rear is broken in every single one because of bad placement. (when someone has to sit in the middle with big heavy workboots they kick them to pieces getting in and out)
    I don't really like them due to the auto-wipers and electronic parkingbreak, also the steering wheel it too high even in the lowest setting. but those things aren't exclusive to the tiguan, but every new car I've tryed..

    • @baluesclues8929
      @baluesclues8929 7 років тому

      So agree with the steering adjustment... I an not short, but my legs are longer than my torso and being able to drop the steering wheel another couple of inches would compensate for having to sit so far back in the seat.

    I own a 2017 Tiguan I bought off of my lease. It has been a very good car. I did notice a small amount of fluid on my garage floor after a month of storage. Should I be concerned about it? Oil level seems fine. Not sure how to check the transmission fluid level. I have just over 44,000 miles and the oil was changed at 40,000 miles.
