Civilization V Leader | Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden

- Revered Swedish king and military commander Gustavus Adolphus (1594 AD - 1632 AD), known most famously as "The Lion of the North," ascended to the throne at the age of 17 and quickly established his reputation as both a skilled military strategist and an innovator in the art of warfare. Inheriting a complex web of domestic and foreign conflicts from his father, the usurper King Charles IX, Adolphus wasted no time in forming alliances with the once hostile nobility, crushing the enemies of Sweden, and leading his nation to the upper echelon of power in Europe during the 17th century.

I remember I always avoided declaring war on Sweden because I found Gustavus a nice guy... Then I searched about him and learned that he was a military mastermind
Tim Stahel Very good point :P
James Dean yeah, that's my point.
Luis Joaquim thank god for the mist... seriously my ancestors were in the Swedish army :l
I lgit doing a prject on him rn lol I wanted some game footage
He was Napoleons idol, and when Napoleon (statistically the most successful general in human history atleast in terms of battles won) considers you the greatest military leader of all time, and the fact that his method of warfare is essentially used today (albeit an evolved version of it) you know your a badass
Player: Demands that Gustavus gives them all of his gold
Gustavus:
M Y C K E T B R A
I love how he just laughs at you when you war dec him
He's Gustavus Adolphus. He could kick pretty much anyone's ass.
Gotta love him XD
Well, you Nazis know everything there is to know about blokes called Adolf, so I'll take your word for it.
@@Spamster3212 I mean, he beat the Germans at war too, so yeah, he would.
Actually, they admitted they had done Gustavus Adolphus wrong and has mistaken done King Eric XIV of Sweden instead. Same applies to another Civ in the branch, don't remember who that was thought... :p
I would not have tried to negotiate with Eric XIV who was known to be quite mad
@@smokey417 Yeah, Gustavus Adolphus was a far better king and person.
Its funny, he stumbles on the "snökonungarnas rike". (Which means the snow kings' kingdom). He is starting to say "kungarnas", which is short for "konungarnas" - but then corrects it mid sentence. Its very subtle but as a swede I can't keep from rolling my eyes.
That's the Swedish national anthem (until now) playing in the background omg
Indrajit J. It was composed about 250 years after the death of GIIA. Although a small part in the national anthem was inspired by a march from the carolean days.
Tho Sweden dosent have a national anthem
@@historybuilds technically, no we don't. But we have used it during sporting events and play it on 6th of June, aka our national day. So it's our spiritual anthem, for sure.
The Swedes have one of the most strangely therapeutic languages, don't they?
It's like a musical English/Dutch hybrid.
+Kitsune Hawk But Dutch is already a hybrid! You are breaking the world, I say! Be careful!
+Kitsune Hawk Also, did you know Swedish sounds alot like Danish, and Norwegian, and Icelandic? :з I know, because I am Danish, and speak pretty much all of those, plus German, and English, and some Russian. What about you? What do you speak? o:
The Red Gamer Right now, just English, but I'm planning on learning Swedish over the Winter/Spring/Summer.
As an English speaker learning Swedish, it's hardly helpful even there. More than 80 percent of Swedes can speak fluent English. Personally I'm learning Swedish for fun, and because I love the culture.
***** Frisian is the closest linguistic relative to OLD English. You know, with runes and stuff. To simply end it there is to ignore the actual history of English. The Germanic old English was mixed--not influenced, outright creoled--with the Norman language, a dialect of French with itself heavy influences from the Norse. What does that mean? I dunno. It means English has a lot of French and Norse influences in it in addition to its west Germanic base. All in all, English is just a bastard of a language, and its history of influences from other languages can't really be explained in full with a linguistic family tree like most other languages can.
THEY GOT HIM THE WRONG BEARD
King erica beard
The design was wrongfully based on his uncle king Erik XIV. Besides, Gustav Adolf stopped wearing harness or plate armor early on in his career due to a bullet wound in his left shoulder.
I love that background music.
GUSTAVUS! ADOLPHUS!
LIBERA ET IMPERA
ARCERBUS ET INGENS
AUGUSTA PER AUGUSTA!
This beast comes in the shape of a man.
Der Löwe aus Mittenacht comes forth, dominating the northern lands with righteous fury. Even the Bishop of Rome powerless to stop him.
Easily one of the most badass rulers to ever live.
Torsvård thank god for that dust cloud
And then, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth happened. No Swedes in my Danzig, please.
kubaGR8 That marked the beginning of the long downfall of the commonwealth.
Gustavus adolphus go forth, libera, impera
He is so noble
Fatin Marwat where are you from ?
Fatin Marwat Nice
I'm norwegian, so I understand everything too : D
Finland was Swedish so the Hakkapelitas was consider Swedish at the time. The Finns fought well and was good soldiers. But the Hakkapelitas wouldn't be the same without the great general Gustavus Adolphus. I respect the Finns courage and strength on the battlefield tough.
+barcaphilip i dont respect your spelling
+barcaphilip i dont respect your spelling
Axel Hugo Laudon I dont respect you posting the same thing twice! xD
Well when the Gustav Adolf decided to join arms with Germany in 1630, he appointed Gustav Horn as his second in command. Gustav Horn was from a Finnish noble family. The Swedish Empire was great at that time...
There were many great swedish generals at the time, such as Torstensson, De laGardie, Stålhandske, Horn, Tott, Wrangel, Banér and many more.
I remember being enchanted by the BGM for his peace scene. Later on I came to discover that it was actually a renderition of the Swedish de facto anthem, Du Gamla Du Fria, which I ended up googling...
...that day, I became in love with Swedish culture
Haha, he sounds like a typical modern Stockholmer - not very immersive.
Davidow1 They can't have put a lot of money into finding a voice actor :P
+Davidow1 He sounds really formal though. (edit: and yes i know this is a 7 month old comment.)
+Davidow1 well since Stockholm is Swedens capital and he grew up there why would he not sound like a normalSwede?
Destroyer120296 Becuase he lived in the 1600's.
Ediable
OKay but maybe they did not know what someone sounded like in the 1600s
He looks like Erik the 14th.
He is, they cocked it up.
And GIIA stopped wearing harness and plate armor early in his career.
I just think of this guy as a badass ever since I nuked his last city and rolled in an army of tanks, and he just said, "What? Tired of fighting?"
The Lion of the North should be the Swedish leader in Civ VI too!!!
I like that both Harald and Gustuvus Adolphus is so happy when u declare war :D
They are just extremely badass, that's all
I just love the declaration of war! xD
"hahaha! Kapten Gals kommer att bli mycket glad över att ge sig ut i krig igen!
"hahaha! Captain Gals will be very happy to go to war again!"
TheMrEngelholm It's actually GARS.
Gustavus Adolphus Rex Swecae.
Leonell Valderama
Thank you!
TheMrEngelholm gustav adolf*
The greatest Swedish king and possible the greatest king in the world.
neehh, that would be Brian Boru of Ireland
All the nations of Scandinavia have a proud and legendary history.
I think his voice is completely wrong and too mild. He should have had a more powerful voice.
Yeah this voice actor speaks really clean and modern Swedish.
Actually he does sound quite powerful for Swedish standards. I felt the authority radiating from him at least.
I think he should sound like a swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt! He has a real Nice powerfull voice
This man has class.
Proud neighbor over here in Norway, definitely one of the greatest leaders of the 17th century; a fierce commander of a strong army, who defined Renaissance warfare!
They took a nice chunk of your land though
@@daanmollema6366RIGHTFUL SWEDISH LAND
Kapten Gars, vi kommer att bli mycket glad att je sej ut till krig igen!
God how wierd it is to hear your own language being spoken by a dude you read about
He looks more like The earlier Vasa king Erik XIV xD
In the painting, the blue thingy around his chest is exactly mirrored. Gustav is secretly a breaker of law and time
I come from 2019! Gustavus Adolphus’s daughter, Kristina, is new leader of Sweden in Civilization 6
XD
Yeah, I looked it up now. It was a name he took when he travelled in secrecy to meet allies and his wife-to-be in western Germany. Gars is an abbreviation of his Latin title Gustavus Adolphus Rex Sueciæ.
As a swede I was hoping for a manlier voice. Still love that sweden exist in this game though. (Also where is the 100% viking bonus when fighting?)
He looks so awesome!
Fuck I love this music.
First thats not even him. 2nd he should be a more of a millataristic leader as he was in history
I agree though the armour looks as if from early portraits of Gustav II but the beard I agree in full looks more like Erik XIV !
He was my first and most trustworthy ally, he helped me take down Songhai and Elngland
Gustav Adolphus pseudonym (referred in his dialogue) is Captain Gars presumably an acronym of Gustavus Adulphus Rex Sveciae (Gustaf Adolf King of Sweden in Latin)
Or its just his millitary general
Daniel, will you upload the leader dialogues for Brave New World like first meeting, trade and declare war?
Yeah I would really hope they would add it in a future expansionpack.
Finland might not have ever been a great country with great power but it would be really nice.
(Continuing my previous comment ("But....Culture")) Note that also Finnish architechture is famous around the world. About the Kalevala/Tolkien part, Tolkien was inspired by it, and wrote arguably the most known fantasy book in the world, The Lord of the Rings. Linus Torvalds, the inventor of Linux, was a Finnish-american software engineer. So essentially we have achieved great things, which have influenced other nations, maybe not directly, but still, influenced alot, and i guess that qualifies
seeing as how they got basically every other civ right, and included civs i hadnt even heard about, it just really surprised me how they got shit wrong. And i figured out that inaccuracy by just looking at the wikipedia page, which is pretty hilarious
Ahhh, the father of Combined Arms Warfare. He's the one to utilize mobile artillery and wrote a book on fire arms warfare.
WooooW goosebumps from our national anthem right there!
The paint behind him its itself? what megalomaniac!
@Minastoka But I agree, Finland would be a nice add for Civ since they withstood the Soviet Unions army in WW2 and did not loose their independence.
He finds humor in war just like Harold Bluetooth!!! LOLOL
Wow, he didn't refuse your demands for all of his money.
*Declares war*
Gustavus: ”hahahha.. ur fucked”
*Wants to make peace 2 sec later*
Gustavus : no fuckng way, u a dead man
I don't think there are many photos around of a 17th century monarch, dude.
"..medlem av den aktade Vasa-ätten." - "..member/part of the esteemed Vasa-clan"
Though I do think his beard are longer then historical I´ll have to check on that!
What about Vienna? she fits all of those descriptions :P
Yes, hakkapeliitas were Finnish. But Finland was part of Sweden. So that makes them Swedish. They mention that in the info text for the hakkapeliitas. Also, the civilizations in these games are historically significant or have been influential at some point. Finland has never really been influential, not even during the WW2. Sweden, however, has. Specially during the 17th and the 18th century. Joten menepäs lukemaan historias.
Låter det inte som om han misslyckas med att säga "Snökonungens rike"?
A scanned and digitally uploaded portrait-painting counts as a picture, dude...
I love how firaxis made him look like Erik XIV.
I was wondering, what's the Swedish horse unit do exactly?
uhm, no? i havent seen a single painting/portrait which depicts Gustav Adolf the Great like this. A portrait of Eric XIV depicts him (Eric) wearing that same exact armor!
Could a Swede beside myself tell me what he is saying when war is declared? I can't hear what he is saying after "Kapten ...".
A TIME OF RELIGION AND WAR LEGEND TELLS THE TALE OF A LION!
Kapten Gals(?) kommer att bli mycket glad över att ge sig ut i krig igen.
as i said, considering how historically accurate everything else is it Civ, its kind of underwhelming that they got something as important as a leaders appearance, when they couldve gotten it right by just looking at the Wikipedia page for a split second. Or it was intentional. I dont know
why do scandinavian leaders in civ 5 always laugh when you declare war at them?
The God of troll this Guy luaghed becuase he won a ton of wars
The God of troll CUZ THEY ARE BADASS
daan mollema gay
Frenchy poel aaaaaaaaawaaarwwsfdsa
Uhmm I agree
the last time when Sweden's army has fought any wars was against Russia and you lost Finland to Russia, but in that war Finnish people fought also for sweden.
But Sweden's army didn't have any experience of "modern" warfare. and the best units that sweden had was finnish cavalry aka. Hakkapeliitat.
Oh my god it's young Santa Claus, he even has the cherry red nose and everything.
Hive Fleet Hydra racist
@Minastoka The Hakkapeliitta unit is definitely not finnish. It was consisted of finnish soldiers yes but it actually wasn't finnish unit because Finland didn't have it's own army back then. They also fought for Gustav II Adolph and Sweden, not for Finland.
0:34 Nee, absoluut niet. Dutch will understand this as, no, absolutely not.
Raznakov It's spelled "Nej, absolut inte" in swedish.
Ytero99 Yeah, it sounds Duth, everytime I heard this I think, what his talking Dutch ;p
+Raznakov Well, it means the same either way. :з
Well it is a germanic languages
Raznakov Germanic languages. As a Dutch guy, i actually didnt find it very hard to learn Swedish.
Next: release the Norwegians with Varg Vikernes as the leader with a burning church in the background.
The dialogue is sadly a bit thin.. huge amount of text and he says "Nej"
And it's "It's". Its means it is someone's, whilst "It's" means It is.
sure would make a bustling and iron solid economy! Military power would be on the weaker side, but rich on culture and beauty!
He sounds like someone really formal from northern stockholm.
+Ediable What?! I think he sounds like someone from Gothenburg.
73n0r He doesn't have that southern accent though.
Wasn't he not able to wear armor due to a musketball wound?
I just love how the devs screwed up so bad by modeling him after Erik 14. rather than Gustaf II Adolf... I mean they couldve just taken a real quick look at the Wikipedia page... How do you screw up so horribly?
they probably thought his beard was so awesome that they decided to model him after Erik XIV anyways
It's Sweden's national anthem: Du gamla, du fria
I'm Swedish, so I understand everything he says =)
Me to
Gustavus Adolphus is the latinized version of his name.
He sounds so young >.
Because he whas
No it's Gustavus Adolphus, which was the grandson of Gustav Vasa.
is that Thralls armor?
WHAT is Sweden a civilization in this game????
Wow !
Yay! I am 50% Swede 50% Finn, i am proud of both nations and think that we should cooperate rather then have pathetic battles in the comment section of youtube videos
Do I sound like that?.........
Hahaha... Jaja.^^
Captain obvious strikes again. Om jag var Gustav Vasa så skulle jag nog inte sitta på youtube och skriva detta t.ex...
Varför skulle han inte det?
nej det gör du inte
GUSTAVUS! ADOLPHUS! LIBERA ET IMPERA! ACERBUS ET INGENS AUGUSTA PER ANGUSTA
No problem!
Remember Breitenfeld.
The main army in the wars before consisted mainly of Swedes, And have always done that. More people = more soldiers in the army, Look at the Great Northern War for example and compare the 40 000 dead Finns with the 140 000 dead Swedes.
Hakkapalita was a light cavalry, Used to harrass the enemy flanks and to chase down fleeing people and to attack in crucial moments like any other cavalry. But they are just one regiment among others. What about the Old blue regiment? Yellow regiment?
That is pretty piss poor actually, they didn't even get the right person...
its gustav adolf II (or gustafus adolfus as english people like to call him)
The transition from the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union at the end of World War I, yes. The Communist revolution in 1917 was why Russia was unable to intervene in Finland's declaration of independence. Thus, the modern Republic of Finland was born.
Indeed, how could they screw that part up?
SWEDEN: YES
SirBeleforonte SWEDEN:yas*
Inb4 1904, the war with the vat, etc.
Don't really understand why they have him calling himself the Snow King, seeing as that was a deragotary name used by the Austrians.
Something about House Wasa.
Well Finland doesn't have more experience in war, but Finnish people have at least as much experience in war as you Swedes do.
We received training and assistance from Germany during the both World Wars, and they if someone knew a few things about warfare. The Second World War was the first modern war, and we participated in it, so you can't say we haven't been involved in modern warfare.
Your latest war was in 1814, and after that you have only taken part in War against Terrorism just like us.
The whole furniture is from IKEA!
oh god no
No, its Gustav II Adolf, never put II after Adolf.
But Firaxis mixed things up so this animation actually got the looks of the swedish king Erik XIV. Just google Erik XIV and compare him to the photos of the real Gustav II Adolf. This animation figure carries the exact same haircut and long beard as Erik XIV. The portrait in the background is also a classic Erik XIV portrait painting, which obviously is the same person as the animated figure.
