      As someone who’s only played Civ 6, I have to agree. In civ 6, when you talk to a leader, you just see them with a painted background tailored to their nation. With this, it’s like you’re physically entering their homeland and meeting them, it feels much more high stakes than just talking to someone in a void.

      I disagree. These tangible backgrounds limit your imagination far too much. When you play as a Civ, you're supposed to be living out some alternate fantasy using real life figures and cultures, like making the French desert-dwellers, or making the Mayans space-age conquerors, etc. It's too off-putting if, for example, the Mongols in your game live in a desert area, but then when you speak to their leader, he's suddenly standing in a huge green grassy steppe.

    • @MukuonChannel
      @MukuonChannel 4 роки тому +218

      @@cometmoon4485I wholeheartedly disagree, the tangible backgrounds of each leader meant that you are personally meeting them in their own main palace at the heart of their kingdom/empire/government, oh I don't know just like a real diplomacy between leaders would play out?
      And how is a powerpoint presentation background supposed to immerse you into the diplomatic scenes?
      How will I know Gilgamesh's riches if he doesn't show me gist of his mythical Uruk Ziggurat? And how will I know the grandeur of Queen Elizabeth if she's not even present on her ornate throne surrounded by wonderfully-adorned decor? The tangible background adds character and mystique to each of the world leaders. The cheap flash background does not.

    • @clayandsand
      @clayandsand 4 роки тому +39

      @@cometmoon4485 I understand, but I guess it's a matter of preference. I guess I never thought of it that way, but I just do enjoy the background that each empires had since it reflects not only their character, but also the time period their country lived on. Montezuma's dark and eerie atmosphere not only reflects the brutal culture of the Aztecs, but also the war he had to endure with the Spanish, and the unexpected defeat they suffered; while Catherine being in the Winter Palace reflected the true scale of Russia's glory in her rule, being decked out in regality and pride. Ethiopia's Haile Selassie showed modern military clothing mixed with an African touch, a reflection of his role as King of Ethiopia, leading his people against the invading Italians, and his negotiations with The League of Nations.
      Civ VI just left me to my imagination, but it would be better if it gave me... More I guess

    I miss the Civ 5 leader screens. They were so artistic and well thought out, there were so many interesting little details that gave you a sense of who these leaders were and what they stood for.
    It was done so well that you could tell what a leader thought of himself/herself by the place they chose to meet you.
    Like how the Arab guy met you in his garden, and had books right in front of him, as if he was reading just before he met you. Then there was Theodara of Byzantium who was literally just laying in her sheets as she talked to you, as if she didn't think you mattered at all, and Ramesses II, Elizabeth, or Sejong who sat in their thrones above you, and so far away from you too, as if he/she were a god, and you were just a lowly peasant. Fucking Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon met you in his throne room, that was dark as fuck, and when you meet him, he asks if you are "another idiot sent here to waste my time," giving you a foreboding sense that this guy is not to be messed with. On the other side of the spectrum, Pedro II of Brazil, who was sitting down in front of a table in his study like he just wanted to have a peaceful across-table discussion with you; the guy treated you like an equal. Gandhi was the same way, meeting you out in front of the sea...before he nuked your capital. Montezuma on the other hand, meets you in front of his people, so that everyone can see your discussion with him, you can hear them react to your actions behind you, and there are skulls etched into the wall behind him, giving you a sense that Montezuma's diplomacy is done completely through intimidation. Genghis Khan meets you in a full suit of armor in front of his war camp, like he was planning a conquest before his meeting with you.
    It's a shame Civ 6 reduces the backgrounds into just painted canvas's that you can barely even see, it downplays the character of these people, doesn't really show you who these leaders were as well as Civ 5 did.
    At least the animation is better in 6.

      Not to mention that at least some forms of Ancient Egyptians have been reconstructed pretty well, you can even buy Grammar Books, so It would have been great to ask an Egyptian scholar for a (rough) translation and pronunciation guide (which wouldn't be near accurate considering the Egyptians didn't write their vocals, but still).

He, in particular was seen as the almighty monarch of the Mexica(Aztec) people, even a god at a point. Nebuchadnezzar (don't know if I spelled that right XD) intrigues me in this, he seems to be mentally ill but mystical at the same time. I heard or read somewhere that in the ancient world people drunk a lot of alcohol, rotting meat, lived in very hot weather and may have consumed mind altering drugs. From what I gather these people were possibly high tripping 24/7, what they called the Gods were not abstract deities far away from anyone's reach but literally walking among them as mass delusions, shame it's all gone and nobody can really know what went down in those days.

    • @thebel89
      @thebel89 9 років тому +27

      way2tehdawn It's interesting that in Bible (Book of Daniel) it is mentioned that Nebuchadnezzar II went insane for 7 years after boasting his achievements and was humbled by God. He left his palace and went to live in the wild. After 7 years he restored his sanity and built mighty city of Babylon, where he died to old age.
      Daniel 4:23 - 4:37 (prepare for long text)
      _""Your Majesty saw a holy one, a messenger, coming down from heaven and saying, 'Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, while its roots remain in the ground. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven; let him live with the wild animals, until seven times pass by for him.'_
      _"This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree the Most High has issued against my lord the king:_
      _You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes._
      _The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules._
      _Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue."_
      _All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar._
      _Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,_
      _he said, "Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?"_
      _Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, "This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you._
      _You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes."_
      _Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird._
      _At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation._
      _All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: "What have you done?"_
      _At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before._
      _Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble."_
      Bible is not the only evidence about his insanity, there are some historical texts, but because Babylon was really old, they are hard to find and you have to know where to look.

      The Vikings and Norse People in general are also stereotyped as only Brutal Marauders, when in fact the Norse (Viking was just a professional, not an ethnicity) were very cleanly, law-biding people, hence you get something like the Danelaw.
      Once settled in England there were attempts to make peace with the local Anglo-Saxons.
      One should also not forget that the English of that time, the Anglo-Saxons, also invaded the Island and were just as aggressive with the local Celtic people as the Vikings were.

      Felix Martono You never added the caption...
      I actually came back here because I finally understood what the heck she was saying at the end of her "Declared War on Me" speech, 12:38, which is translated as "You *earned* the animosity of Carthage by your *greed*" here. For quite a while I had been trying to figure out what her last word was, since it sounds nothing like any root connected with any Semitic word for "Greed". I couldn't make it out. Then yesterday I finally realized that the line is simply *mistranslated*, and it was misleading me: It's not "greed" she's talking about at all, it's "exploration". This fits excellently with her use of the word "Gilita" ("you've discovered") at the beginning of the line, which was previously just a strange word to use in that context.
      So the full sentence is this: *"You've discovered the wrath of Carthage in your exploration"*. You can flip the order to have it make more sense in English: *"In your exploration, you've discovered the wrath of Carthage"*.
