- Guitar and synthesizer demo of the lush and fluttery Parabola Solid State Tremolo pedal by Caroline Guitar Company.
Available for purchase at:thepedalzone.com/parabola/
The Parabola is Caroline Guitar Co’s reimagining of the old transistor-based Schaller TR-68 tremolo and its highly unique, delicious and sloshy waveform. Sporting two different modulation styles, a wide depth and speed range, pre- and post-gain stages and the über cool Havoc feature, this pedal is ready to serve up everything from dreamy sonic heartbeats to gritty lo-fi rhythm blasts.

Hey there Stefan.
My son was born yesterday.
After that, when I hear your riff at 2:00 , I feel that it really matches what I'm feeling right now.
It really describes the immense joy and happiness growing inside me.
Also I always watch your demos. You're the reason why I buy so much pedals until my wife gets mad at me lol.
Can't wait until you upload a new demo.
I wish you the best.
Excellent review and great music.
Thank you! Means a lot to me.
I just circled back to this demo years later, and wow- not only does it hold up, but it's still leagues beyond most UA-cam gear videos due to your approachable friendly style and connected playing. Whether or not I acquire the pedal at hand, I walk away inspired to make sonic explorations that appeal to my heart. 🙏🤘
Thank you so much, Andy! Honored that you took the time to circle back to an oldie and drop such a sweet comment. Parabola is seriously the best sounding tremolo I've ever played.
I've always been curious about your influence. Your demos of course are consistently stellar. Keep up the good work.
I was waiting for this demo a couple on months, and here it is! Sounds perfect!!!
Happy to hear that the demo lived up to your hopes and expectations. Thank you ❤️🙏
I’ve been waiting for this demo for ages from you so glad it’s finally here
That's awesome, man. Happy that I was finally able to deliver. Hope you like it ☺
Awesome vid! And all Caroline effects are top notch!
Thank you! And heck yeah! Everything they make just ends up being incredible ☺
I'm 2 years late but I keep replaying that riff from 4:33...that sounds incredible. Great channel Stefan
Your videos never feel like pedal demos they feel like song walkthroughs which is infinitely cooler because you’re a rad guitarist. When you get your band together you guys are going to start the next big indie craze man... so take me with you I’ll do bass ayyy
Dude these riffs you write NEED to be songs. It's not a joke anymore, get some more sick musicians. Get a sick vocalist/drummer and you would be one of my fav bands. Your riffs are so good. Keep killing it Stefan.
Thanks, man! Hopefully I'll get my act together and get some sort of solo recordings done this year. Currently working on a new band project though, so that's where my time is going. Gonna be heavy. Gonna be fun. Thanks for the kindness, and thanks for watching and commenting. Always means so much to me ❤
I agree!
seconded
Agreed.
Don’t let anyone pressure you into what you “need” to do. You’re doing just fine & making a huge impact on musicians everywhere already 🤘
Brilliant, Stefan. It's hard to imagine a better demo of a f'n tremolo pedal :) You make everything sound so musical.
Awww, man! Thank you! It’s easy to make things sound musical when you’re working with a great pedal, and this is a FREAKING GREAT pedal 😊
I didn't realize I needed a tremolo until now....Stefan you're progressions and tone are amazing. Thanks for the video.
Awww shucks! Thank you! I’m blushing here 😊❤️🙏
Beautiful sounds, beautiful guitar!
Thank you very much, man! ❤
Wonderful demo, as always.
Thanks, dude! So kind of you ❤️🙏
WOW!!!----once again I'm tasked with having to differentiate and distinguish between the actual PEDAL sounding awesome and your beautiful playing simply just...killin' it...really gorgeous playing Stefan
Too kind, dude!! Thank you 🙏 The Pedal is pretty damn amazing though. Believe me 😊
Great Possibilties! Cool Effects, I Totally Vibe With Your Resonance and Groovular. Knowledge > Sir Pedal Dude!🎸🔊🎼Peace
Thank you, sir! ❤
Stefan, you are the man.
And you're the best! Thank you. Happy you enjoyed watching the demo ❤
finally picked one of these up just for this demo
Oh wow! I feel super humbled to hear that. Honored you found the demo inspiring. It's truly one of the finest tremolo pedals I've ever played.
i love the knobs on this thing! haha
Yup. Great aesthetics all around
Damn... How do you come up with riffs like these? The tremolo compliments them as much as the opposite.
Truly stunning tones and very inspiring. Your chann has me G.A.S-ing sooo HARD.
Thank you for being so nice and generous with us pedal geeks ; may it last a long time! ❤
Cheers from France!
Unbelievably kind of you, man! Thank you ❤️🙏 It’s easy to come up with ideas when you’re playing through a truly inspiring piece of kit, and the Parabola is just so inspiring and so much fun to play. Thanks for watching and thank you for the kind comment. Truly made my day 😊
Gorgeous demo! For a long time, I thought I should get a Strymon Flint, but whenI saw I could get the Parabola AND the Météore Lo-Fi Reverb for less, well, that was a no-brainer.
Two things: 1. I love Caroline Guitar Company pedals, and you do this one justice, I will pick one up when I get the funds, and 2. I found the link to your old band's bandcamp page you posted in the comments and am loving it, good stuff!
Thank you so very much! 1) I'm stoked to hear you're getting the Parabola, and honored that my video inspired you to get it. This pedal needs to be on more boards out there. 2) Happy you enjoy the music. Means a lot to me ❤
I've already got 2 tremolo's on my board, but now I think I need a 3rd. Caroline Guitar Co. is a great company (that Kilobyte, though!!!) Thank you for not just ripping E pentatonic scales on your demo's.
Really musical and inspired playing. I have the Meteore, love it, but this sounds like a step forward as far as versatility and creative approach to their game. Haven’t heard a Tremolo this full of character, but that is their M.O...CGC bring tactile playability to their pedals, and a unique lo-sci-fi trash can aesthetic I love. Thanks for the great demo, my wallet is probably going to be getting mad at me again.
Thank you so much, man! The Parabola truly is chock-full of character and mojo. Just epic emotional engineering right there. Caroline Guitar Co knocked it out of the park ❤
the amount of pure unbridled STANK in the jam at 6:29 made me realize that I NEED this pedal. NOW!!!!
Haha! Cheers! This i definitely one of the finest tremolo pedals I've ever played!
Übercool indeed!
Heck yeah! There's just so much mojo packed into that box of awesomeness!
Nice demo! I'm still a harmonic trem guy myself, both from my Ring Thing and my Flint, but you've definitely highlighted this pedal well! An idea you might like: putting the Kilobyte first in your chain. That's where mine sits, ahead of all gain even, but I love the way delay into trem sounds and feels.
Thanks, man! Happy you enjoyed the demo. Harmonic Trem is a lovely effect. I feel that the FM mode on the Parabola sits in a beautiful world between standard trem and harmonic trem. I usually have my Tremolo after delay and reverb. I just used it in a different way for this demo. But there were also examples in there using the Parabola after the Météore. Tremolo really shines when used after stretchy time-based effects 😊🤘
This pedal nails the tremolo intro of For Reverend Green by Animal Collective
Okay. Great to know. I love Animal Collective ❤
I llllooovveee that song
You have sold me on this pedal
You need to write to Caroline and tell them you just sold a Parabola!
Awwww, man! Stoked to hear you liked the demo so much, that you're getting a Parabola. It's a magical pedal. Everything is just so finely tuned on that thing. Not a bad sound in it ❤
@@thepedalzone I hope I will be able to make it sound as good as you! Do you have any connections with Walrus Audio to where you could do a demo of their Julia pedal? I think you could make some magic with it!
@@alexwray No, not at the moment. But I used to own a Julia. Nice pedal, but I eventually sold it. Was just spoiled for choice on the great chorus/vibrato front. My go-to chorus/vibrato is the Fairfield Shallow Water now, but I like things to sound lo-fi and broken. For more pristine hi-fi chorus sounds, I either slam on my EQD Sea Machine or Maxon PAC-9
@@thepedalzone Thanks man I'll check those out!
ditto on demo and cool riffs - Its been 5 years, have any newer pedals matched this one ? I have a parabola being sent to me now . Im just curious what to compare it to , I don't think theres anything else like it .... however there are soooo many pedal makers these days ! p.s- are you running reverb on this demo and if so -before or after the tremolo ? Thanks so much .
As always, an amazing video! Thank you!
This may be a dumb question, but where do you get your providence patch cables? They seem amazing!
Nive playing! wow you and this pedal should marry
Thanks, man! Not sure my girlfriend would like me marrying a pedal. Would get awkward quick 😂
En lille hilsen fra Danmark - Det skal du ha'! Jeg vil bare sig, at finder dine "chord voicings" yderst inspirerende, og det at det at det er din egen stil som bruges i dine demos, giver det hele meget mere karakter og substans. Keep up the good work.
Someone offered me a Caroline kilobyte in a trade and I did it because of your demo, now that same person is offering a trade for this pedal and I here I am again about to pull the trigger on it haha
You definitely won't regret it. Parabola is stellar! The waveforms are divine, and the pre-amp is to die for. Honored you dig the demos. Means a lot to me 🙏
@@thepedalzone I got it! Absolutely amazing pedal! Please keep up the good work!
This riff at 4:30 need to be in a Post-Rock song!
Very kind of you. Thank you!
I really like how the FM mode sounds! It seems like it mixes your dry signal with a bright wet signal. Do you think I can get close to the Parabola FM mode tremolo sound using a dirt pedal into the EQD Night Wire? Your playing is stellar as always, and keep up the amazing demos.
A dirt pedal into the Night Wire won't be the same as the Parabola, but it will still be a stellar sound... But the Parabola is special. There's just something about the wave-form that's ûber musical, and that in-built pre-amp is just on another level.
This guy keeps making awesome effects, that are a bit different from others.
Looks like, I may be getting my third Caroline pedal now.
I love Harmonic Trem, but I use Uni-Vibe enough that I often ignore it.
I'm wondering what extremely, strange sound, I will get, with a Uni-Vibe into the Parabola.
You would get pure magic. The sonic equivalent of the confetti that should rain down on all of us on our finest day.
Man I already bought the Tremotron because of you. Is it weird if I get a 2nd tremolo on my board? :D
Awesome demo as always.
Then you would effectively have 3 trems on your board with the Tremotron's dual trem action. Can only imagine that it would be awesome! Thank you for the kindness ❤
I know, I did the same thing...now, I have five😳 tremolos 🤪
Epic!!!
Once you've gone harmonic trem...it's hard to go back.
This is a good pedal, but I'll keep my "feature packed" SA Vertigo - and I've already got a couple Caroline pedals on the board. Gotta spread the love around, hey.
I do love that Meteore reverb, tho.
I feel like the Filter Modulation in the Parabola occupies its own unique space somewhere between a standard trem and a harmonic trem. It just sounds incredibly lush, and just blends with your playing perfectly. But as long as you're happy, then I'm happy ❤ And yes, Météore is incredible. Highly recommend you check out their Kilobyte delay as well if you get the chance.
Hey Stephen I to am a reverb freak and getting to know all those wonderful pedals man if you ever visit LA cal. I d like doing some ambient sound scapes wow that would be fun, you have a special technique. Did you the the band running? Is there a site or link we can hear your sound? Keep videoizing I’m a fan
Damnit this sounds so cool! By the way, how did you get those reverse sounds at 3.45? Loved it
Thank you so much, dude!! Super stoked to hear you enjoyed the demo. It’s an incredibly rad pedal 😊🤘 The reverse sounds are simply made by reversing the loop I’m feeding into the Parabola.
What’s the tune you play towards the end when your stacking layers? Reminds us so much of Isis.......(the band!)
I always just improvise. Never play other’s songs. But I’m honored that it reminds you of ISIS. It’s one of my favorite bands 🤘
ThePedalZone awesome....one of ours too!!
Intro sounded like Opeth... Enjoyed the review!
Cool, man! I love Opeth. Happy you enjoyed the demo. Means a lot to me 👍
Sounds magnificent. You kill it!
What mic on your amp?
Thank you so very much, man! It is indeed a magnificent pedal 😊🤘 I’m using an Aston Spirit on my amp. Just a killer mic. Can’t recommend it enough.
awesome I'll check it out, thanks
can the whitecap by obne do something similar to the havoc function here?
Yes. You can actually program the Whitecap to either ramp up the speed or ramp it down. So in that regard it’s much more versatile. But it’s two very different sounding tremolos
🔝🔝🔝❤
Thank you!! ❤️❤️🙏🙏
Is your Jazzmaster all stock ? This guitar sounds so freaking amazing. Oh, and great demo as usual :)
Thanks, buddy! Yeah, the Jazzmaster is basically all stock. I’ve upgraded the nut for better string stability, but that’s it. Everything else is stock 😊🤘
Guess I might buy one then. Again, #StefanMadeMeDoIt in the next future !
J. Mascis JM? Those are great.
Love mine, Stefan is also responsible for the decision 😍
I'm surprised that they're not soft switches, especially on the havoc side. Do you know if all the production models are that way?
Nope, I don't know that. Try and ask Caroline Guitar Co. They have great customer service and are always quick to reply ☺
Wish I was there...
At my studio?
Yeah. Surrounded by this awesome sound.
You’re always welcome! Soundscapes and beers await 😊
Thanks for hospitality. Hope someday it will happen.
Between this and the tremotron, which would you rather have on your board? And don't say they both do different things well! THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE
They both do different things really well. There can never be only one 😘
hey! in 3:50 sounds like a reverse mode, there's a delay running???
No, it’s just a reversed loop on my Ditto Looper.
@@thepedalzone osom idea!! thanks!
you are sooooo guilty... you made me buy this pedal... damn, now I have got 3 trem effects on my board😉
Yay!!! This is a guilt that I don’t mind carrying around 😊 You’re gonna love it. Trem everything! 😍
Thank you for reviewing this babe. Nice demo, huge sound and no talking bullshit. Where can it be placed in a rig?( Tunner, compressor, overdrive, modulation, delay, reverb.)
Thank you very much! I mainly use Tremolo after my reverb, because I like the way the reverb tail helps prolong the tremolo pulses. But you can place it where ever you want. But luckily I made a video on this subject. You can watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/oEm-6lxSHfA/v-deo.html
Dear friend, (I forgot your name, please state it more often) I found your playing and chord progressions on this video exeptionall and the pedal very interesting aswell. BUT because this is your latest video and I would like to up my chance for a responce I am going to use this video to go OFF TOPIC and commend you on how you presented the JAW HARP effect on the discom-bob-ulator filter. I HAD NO IDEA FILTERS COULD DO SUCH A MAGICAL THING and you are THE FIRST AND ONLY ONE -THAT I KNOW OF- THAT PRESENTED IT. Now whenever I come across a filter only one question enters my mind: CAN IT DO THE JAW HARP EFFECT? I am so crazed with the effect I always wonder which filter does it better? SO I would humbly ask ...since you are officially -for me atleast- the jaw harp guy, could you please showcase and compare filter pedals that can do the jaw harp effect? Thanks!
ok STEFAN I get it. Its not your style to make dry "sound check" pedal video's as I call them. IF that is the problem I think you could find an interesting and musical way to compare their strengths. But that is not the only problem is it....
Hey, man! Thank you for the kindness. I'm really happy you enjoy the demos, and awesome to hear you specifically enjoyed the DiscumBOBulator demo. It was a fun one to make ☺ Most envelope filters can do the jaw harp effect though. It's kind of a natural part of the effect and the way the envelope works, so I don't know how much a "jaw harp sound" focused comparison video would help. But I love doing comparison videos, so there's absolutely no problems present here ☺
OK then.....Remember the parameters you needed to make the jaw harp effect? 1) Downsweep 2) Fast attack and release 3) Shallow sweep. The combination of these controls is not always present....and especially the downsweep is not always available, since most of these effects were usually going for that sexy quack sound and didn't need the downsweep. I have 3 filter pedals (The DREADBOX, Epsilon, the SOURCE AUDIO Guitar filter, the EHX Tube Zipper) The Epsilon doesn't have downsweep and can't J harp. The other two CAN ....but the second is digital with some impressive results, so I bought the Tube ZIpper because it's super analogue, hoping its tubes would help to make those mysterious J harp harmonics blossom. But you see.... one of the "problems" with these pedals is, the controls have different names, so since I couldn't be shure if the Tube Zipper could J Harp, buying it was A GAMBLE-....it kinda could eventually, but I 'm not impressed, but it could just be me or my guitar, I saw better results with my single coil telecaster-...BUT WE NEED MORE TESTS!. Another example: I was looking online at a DEATH BY AUDIO filter pedal the other day and instead of an up or down filter sweap, it had a three way toggle switch with icons. The icons seemed promising but I couldn't be 100 % sure. AND since this effect (the siberian shamans call the Jaw Harp a gate way to the other world and is found in almost all cultures) hasn't entered the mainsteam guitar world yet no one is testing for it.......................................... OK so A) it's a natural part of SOME FILTER PEDALS which WE CAN'T DETERMINE FOR SURE WHO THEY ARE, EVEN IF WE READ THEIR MANUALS ................. BUT! (AND THIS BUT IS BIGGER THAN J LOW'S) B) Lets say all filter pedals J harped. Again so what? Spring reverbs are a natural part of what spring reverbs do..and most of them suck. SO ... you need special J Harp tests to see if the picking dynamics bring out different harmonics and if these harmonics are rich and loud. ....and not to mention C) You can give new ideas to pedal builders,..untill now the J harp is just a side effect...the pedal builders usually go for that sexy funky quack...so maybe you can change their focus and maybe in doing so, make some creative proposals .....LIKE FOR INSTANCE: adding vowel sounds sensitive to picking dynamics....or do some creative stacking yourself.....WHATEVER.................IN CONCLUSION. If there was a need for videos on an effect ....the need couldn't be bigger. why? because its a gamble to buy a pedal for this reason....why? Because it's usually an accidental side effect for the pedal builders...and nobody is testing for it... ................................................................................................................................But I'll understand if you're not interested,....I don't think you care about being mainstream or talking exclusively to it.....but I DO think you focus on having creative fun and giving yourself and your viewers an aesthetically (as much as an informative) rich experience....and I 'm not sure this effect archaic as it is, conforms with your musical education and sensibilities. In short even though it rubs shoulders with some of your aesthetic interests you probably don't like it that much. And that is totally ok with me of course. Everything is not for everyone. THANKS ANYWAY MAN.
If you could only buy a tremolo, which one would you pick? I really liked the Parabola and the Tremotron. But I've never played with tremolo before.
It all depends on context and needs, my friend. Let me know what features you need in order to perform the music you make or the music you would like to make, and I’ll gladly make a recommendation for you based on your specific needs 😊🤘
I'm still planning my new pedalboard right now. I play in the church at the moment, focused on worship, but soon I intend to start a band (with influences from Nothing But Thieves to QOTSA). My current set consists of a MXR z-44 and Barber Dirty Bomb, both clones, which I plan to replace with Catalinbread SFT and Stone Deaf PDF-2. It also features Corona Chorus and Flashback Delay from TC Electronics. I want to get Walrus Fathom Reverb and maybe the ARP-87 Delay (either to replace Flashback or to have both). And a Whammy V to finish. I think that's all. xD
Sorry for my google english.
1:59 is that the tele or the jazzmaster?
I’m pretty sure that’s the Tele 😊
Expression pedal would be cool.
Can it do classic smooth tremolo sounds and not so choppy?
Yeah, just roll back the depth
Man I was going to get a JHS Kodiak but now I want this. This has way more tonal capability than the Kodiak but it doesn’t have the expression pedal input for the rate :/ Edit: Oh and it doesn’t have the different waveforms. Hmm now I’m in a predicament.
I haven't tried the Kodiak, so can't really say how they compare. But the Parabola is one of the sweetest tremolo pedals I've ever played. It simply wins on pure mojo. It might not have the most crazy feature set, but everything in it is so supremely well voiced. I would by that thing for the pre-amp section alone. Luckily the two tremolo modes sounds just as incredible as the pre-amp ☺
Do you have a band, or any music available? No joke, you're one of my favorite modern guitarists.
Blown away, man! A billion times thank you ❤️🙏 I’m currently not in any active bands, but you’re welcome to give my most recent band project, Cloud Anthems a listen. It’s some heavy atmospheric postrock. Hope you like it 😊 cloudanthems.bandcamp.com/releases
Awesome, thanks! Keep up the great work!
I really wish I could have the preamp as a standalone pedal. Preferably with an expression pedal option. Man...
Their new Icarus pedal is that pre-amp in a stand-alone pedal
@@thepedalzone isn't the Icarus like 7 years old?
No, the new one. Like a month or two old
@@thepedalzone Oh wow, hadn't heard. Thanks!
What the fuck is "awesomeness"?
The synth sounded much better than the guitar.
Well okay then. Happy you enjoyed the synth 👍
