I'm 43 years old, been playing games at home and in the arcade since 1985. As much as I loved Robocop arcade I legit never knew there was an arcade sequel. Looks super fun! Another great video my dude!
It’s this channel great? I’m 46 and have been gaming just as long. I never saw the robocop sequel ever too. Loved the first one. When I finally got an emulator a few years ago I made it a point to finish the arcade game and finally see the ending some 30 years later
The arcade truly was a magical time/experience. When you found something rare or different that you’d never seen before, and very likely would never see again it was incredible. I can’t imagine an experience like that with games the way they are now. It was a singular experience, unlike anything I have experienced since.
I went to a local arcade that opened quite recently. It was FULL of people, kids, familly, older people playing on pinball tables, etc. One game took me by surprise, it was a huge panel made of small LED lights forming pixelated, yet very colorfull, retro image. It was a 2P game and the mother and son playing it seemed to have a blast. It was great and impressed me much in the same way you just described it. I think the spirit of the arcade can still live up today.
@@RottenMuLoT Yeah I still see it out there which makes me really smile both on the inside and the outside. It's not like it was but the spirit carries on where it can, and I'm glad that it does.
It’s much better experience now though objectively. We remember these days with a nostalgic lens - but we like to forget how 90% of these games were horrible or setup so you’d die in the stupidest ways to spend more tokens
@@jjmah7 It's definitely different nowadays when you can just get a ROM/ emulated version with unlimited credits. Yeah there was nothing worse than a cool game that was just a total quarter muncher let alone an awful game that was the exact same way. But it's a lot like movies we only tend to remember the good ones and we totally forget the bad ones. I do think once we are able to push the nostalgia out of our eyes/minds we can see a little more clearly. But the problem is for some it's very difficult. I know I have gone back and revisited a lot of games that I absolutely loved as a kid or young adult that I can't stand now. I would say you're right about 10% are still absolutely amazing. Whoa! That's rare. There was an arcade where they had Primal Rage 2 back in the day, but it pretty much disappeared soon thereafter. Actually, I thought it was a massive downgrade, as the fun of the original was getting to play as dinosauroids, not humanoids. But I'm glad it's available somewhere, because I thought the company tried to pretend it never existed.
Dear GAWD, I miss the arcades... Kids today will never understand what it meant or feel that sensation of the noise washing over you, your eyes darting from cabinet to cabinet & inserting that coin & playing something that just couldn't be done at home... It was an amazing experience. Nice video SLX, more of these please... bonus points for using the phrase "rare as rocking-horse shit"... confirming my subscribing to you was utterly justified.
@Kefla Arcade games exist, sure, but have you noticed that most have late 2000s graphics even in 2023? There's nothing that totally pushes the boundaries, with a quality that is totally unavailable at home. I would be surprised if most arcade games even today run as high as 1080p, much less have graphics that can blow away someone who has a modern-gen (or even last-gen) console or decently powerful computer.
I've got to see a true arcade Renaissance one of these years. An actual place where you can go to play classic and new arcade machines in an 80's and 90's style.
It's interesting to know that the Japanese Arcade version of Robocop 2 has an extra proloog level, in which you act out the ending of Robocop 1 and battle ED209. That level is absent from the US/World versions.
I play video games since 1986, and i´ve played 8 of those 10 Arcade sequels. But i never knew that Joe and Mac had another sequel (Joe and Mac Returns), and the Sega Arcade version of Pitfall 2 aswell. Those two took me by surprise to be honest.
I have dreams to this day of finding sequels to random arcade game at the local arcade (which has not been open for over a decade). I think the most common one I have is finding a sequel to TMNT, which was 6 player like X-men. Shredder's Revenge was a literal dream come true for me, though in my dreams Venus was a playable turtle. I also dreamed a lot of non existent pinball games, like Sonic or Zelda. Those too are kind of real now, since there's a variety of high quality Visual Pinball creations based on those (and just about anything else you can think of).
Nastar is actually a great game, if you give it a chance and appreciate it for its own merits instead as a Rastan sequel. It was a huge hit in my local arcade and I played the hell out of it on the emulators later.
I have both Outrun and Turbo Outrun in my arcade collection and they are both my most cherished games. As a kid I too played both every time I saw them along with Outrunners
Man this was a blast from the past, I lived in the Bronx so anyone that lives in the Bronx knows every corner has a store, my corner store had 5 machines in it at all times, I remember when outrun came in it was the most amazing thing we ever seen with the steering wheel shaking when you crashed, it was a first for us. Then they took it out and brought in turbo outrun and it wasn’t the same thing, let’s just say they replaced it with another machine less than a month and a half later.
I never knew about Robocop 2 and Rastan 3 in the arcade. I'd heard of Hang-On limited edition, but didn't realise it was so different to regular Super Hang-On. I'd never seen that deluxe blue sit on bike either, that's pretty awesome!
I didn't have an arcade in the town i grew up in and I never really got the chance to play any arcade games. Now that I'm able to play the majority of them through emulation I'm finding them to bed the most fun games to play. Can't believe I missed out on these games as a kid but I'm definitely going to make up for it now. Thanks for the great video. I could listen to you talk about Sega all day
I love Fantasy Zone II on the SMS. I think it has some of the nicest background art of any game on the Master System. As you learn your route and start to find the hidden secrets it becomes easier... the warp gates link together in a simple loop so it's not as mazelike as it seems at first. You do need to always know the shortest route to a shop that sells an engine, because if you're caught without an engine upgrade you won't live long. The remake is great too, but so different it's really a whole new sequel.
We had two arcades. One in the mall, and the other in the shopping center right behind my high school. That one was called Electric Lady Land, the one in the mall was named TILT.

That robot battle suit enemy in Robocop 2 (at 2:43) looks like it was directly inspired by the powered armour from the anime adaptation of Starship Troopers from 1988.
I share a similar experience growing up in arcades with little money. I would get lost in the attract modes. Finding odd jobs to do as a mall rat to make a few bucks to drop in my favorite machine. As an arcade technician for most of my life, I always try to make sure people can hear the machines I operate. Far too often you can't hear games in public settings and for me that takes away from the overall experience.

Quite surprised to see a mention about Power Instinct: the second chapter was quite popular in my homeland (Italy), but the "Groove On Fight" chapter was a half disaster in my opinion. I hope you talk about OutRunners, that is a wonderful arcade game. Sadly SEGA never released a home port that was even close to the arcade. Why sega keeps so many of their classic arcade games locked away I'll never understand, some might be licensed issues, but most can be worked on around. I'll love of they released a true arcade collection of their older titles. From the 2D scalers to the newer on 3D games. Heck, they could release them in collection packs and fans would love to buy them all.
oh man, TRUXTON 2! I did play a little bit of it in MAME I remember EGM saying when it was released it was huge in Japanese arcades! it is definitely a tough shmup. For PC fans, Bitwave has been porting several of Toaplan's other great arcade shmups (including the original truxton) so I can only imagine it's a matter of time before they get to bring the sequel to PC as well!
Sega Lord X, originally Sega released 2 different versions of Super Hang-on at the same time being the Sit-On arcade (Easy course) and the Stand-Up arcade (Hard course). As the Sit-On was harder to steer (Easy course) each stage starts with easy corners and the corners become harder (tighter) towards the end of the stage, every stage is designed like this... The Stand-Up which was just the handlebars and was easier to operate did the reverse for each stage, stages started with harder corners going into easier corners towards the end of the stage. Generally the Stand-Up is a harder version to play any way. The Sega Megadrive version is based on the Sit-On easy course, the Atari ST and Amiga versions are based on the Stand-Up hard course. The Xbox 360 version contains both versions of the arcade and can be selected via the options as to which one you'll play.
Players: "Zaxxon is tough to get the hang of with it's isometric view" Sega: "Ok no worries, we'll make it faster"

For PC fans, Bitwave has been porting several of Toaplan's other great arcade shmups (including the original truxton) so I can only imagine it's a matter of time before they get to bring the sequel to PC as well!
"Rarer than Rocking Horse S#!+" That's my laugh for the day. No I'm appropriating that and putting it in general rotation. 😂 Thank you Sega Lord!
Totally forgot about Robocop 2 and Zaxon 2. Thank you.
Dude, Truxton 2 looks sick!! Gonna have to check that out.
