That and a Lynx version would be incredible.! The only console they haven't released it for yet that I've heard them talk about is TurboGrafx/PC Engine. I think they said they want to do a huge HuCard instead of putting it on CD. I'd be fine with either. I'm hoping they make sure it's set up for the 6 button controllers and make sure to use the new graphical tricks that have been figured out within the last few years. Like transparencies instead of dithering.
The single quote typo you noticed is because computer programmers stopped using ASCII and have been using Unicode for a couple of decades. Somebody opened up the text in a modern editor and used a Unicode character. Then the Unicode text was imported into the game without thought. It's a super common problem. Robby Layton the UA-camr bought a huge wrap he probably spent hundreds of dollars on and it's full of Unicode encoding problems. The tool the printer uses is ASCII and the text they submitted was Unicode.
I can't believe I've never stopped by this channel before. I just found it by looking up Sega's SG-1000 of all things. The amount of effort is crazy and I have a nice backlog to watch and listen to while I do chores. Thanks man, instant sub
That new Doom CD32X Fusion game is mind blowing. I thought all they could get out of the Sega CD is better sound but they managed to add more graphical assets.
If I ever develop a game, it would be called "Frustration". All it has is the most frustrating game mechanics of gaming. One hit deaths, enemies/bosses not having lifebars and not giving any indication of damage when hit, multiple water, ice and sewer levels, unskippable cutscenes which will always appear just after autosave checkpoint...
Love the ending sketch with the opposite of the message we've been seeing in arcade games since "before time even began". Especially Capcom arcade games, Marvel Super Heroes VS Street Fighter and Darkstalkers in particular. Loved it Joe! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was surprised that the SNES got these two new titles, I hope more will show up. Vengeance Hunters for the Neo Geo looks great, looks like an early 90's game, it seems the fighting is a bit too slow and the hits could have used more impact to them. Hey Joe, I was expecting you to narrate a few segments in Sacred Line II like you did to the first game. Xenocrisis was exclusively targeted to the Mega Drive, none of the ports change the visuals or soundtrack enough to deviate from the original.
There’s a spiritual successor to Nazca’s seminal side scrolling run n gun Metal Slug. It’s called Kraut Buster for the Neo Geo AES and MVS. You should discuss it in great depth since you drool over everything Neo Geo or Metal Slug for that matter Joe the next time you do either a spiritual successor or new games for old consoles episode.
Thank you for mentioning zpf, megacat has been emailing me since August about confirming me shipping address, if not for this video I would have never checked, thank man!
Great video! Alwa’s Awakening got a pretty fun NES port recently. It gets downgraded a touch in the graphics but the core game is still there and it’s real cool to see it running on an NES. I believe it is available in both physical and rom purchases. Maybe a title to show for a future episode?
That end skit sure was something, What that something is remains to be seen, but people are saying it was hilarious. I am one of those people, even though I might be a bot. I just started seeing the reviews for Vengeance Hunters. I have been eager to see how that turned out. The sprite work and art style seem quite good as you say. The art is cartoony, which is fine by me, but it has a certain unique flair to it. The character designs of all three playable characters appeal to me as well, so that's a plus. Even though you had some issues with the structure of the game, your impressions seemed quite fair, and it still sounds like something I'd want to try out. I appreciate a critical approach like that. Nothing sounds like a deal breaker for me. Also good to see more about the SNES version of Xenocrisis ad how they adapted it to the system.
I'm not really fond of new games on old consoles (specially cause I live in a country where getting old consoles may cost a fortune... like everything else, pretty much), but it's good to see devs putting heart and effor to keep the old styles alive. Brings me back to my childhood and teenage years. Good stuff.
Thanks for doing these Joe, it’s hard to keep up with all things retrogaming since we have so much choice now. I hope you can cover the incoming Atari 7800+ and all the launch titles. 👍🏻
Ok I can't believe that it wasn't until THIS video that I realized "Tate" mode is just the japanese word for "standing" because of how "Yoko" is "side". Mind blown.
This topic has slowly turned to my favorite on this channel. So many cool projects on just about every old format available. Have you checked out Alwa's Awakening for the NES yet, Joe? It's a sort of fake NES game that later got ported to the NES, and is arguably better that way. Physical copies are probably really hard to get by now, but the rom file is cheaply available on both itch and Steam.
Hey, Joe! Before I even watch the video, can I give you an idea for future content? What about "(old) Games that Run On The Same Engine"? Nowadays we've all heard about Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, Game Maker and so on, not to mention proprietary engines. But what about the old times? I know for example that Mega Man and Ducktales run on the same engine. It would be nice to know more games as well. Obviously I'm not talking about reskinned games like Mario 2 or Psycho Fox. Hope that idea can be turned into a video someday 😊 Now let's watch today's video!
That's a cool idea, but once you go back before Unreal 1, it'd be pretty hard to actually know and verify what games run on what engines, wouldn't it? You could dig around in RAM and find strong similarities between Capcom's games, I'm sure (I assume that's what you did?), but that info would be pretty difficult and tedious to track down.
@@3dmarth Well, I don't know how well documented these things are, how easy or hard is to find that information. Since Joe is very knowledgeable about retrogaming history as a whole, maybe he has some info, or an idea where (or whom) to look for that. Worst case scenario, it's very hard to be done. Best case we get a new series :D
I think some of the pixel artists of homebrew should visit pixel art forums as they make a lot of classic mistakes like generic pillow shading with odd multiple light source angles(?) and overuse of dark outlines among sprites with no outlines, creates a rather inconsistent clash of art styles and faults. They could improve tenfold getting some constructive criticism and tips ijs. 11:32 With that that kind of CGI graphics post processing I can only implore developers to please use Ordered(Bayer) dithering and stop using Floyd-Steinberg or similar variants. Ordered dithering is much more friendly to image block tile optimization, sprite segmenting, and overall layer compositing. Why that was default 90s dither I'll never understand.😒 13:32 Yeah it's a style that can get kind of loud, a sort of pop sensibility of overly chromed airbrush style details. It's a good style for the Genesis in technical terms of using every color slot as much as possible though, avoids getting muted or heavy with dither like some do when faced with that platform's challenging color restrictions. Some interesting compromises for the Xeno Crisis multi-platform porting, sometimes choices are more about getting it done in a timely fashion than pursuing the perfect solutions. For example I was looking at Elevator Agent for 2600 recently, it turned out great but it took many years to complete at such a high standard. I never would have thought so many Neo Geo homebrews would get made, just the raw hardware cost alone in those giant carts heh. Definitely great to see Grimace and the gang again, I never knew he was an anthropomorphic taste bud until recently. Pretty nice looking game he got, that platform usually saw a lot of terrible pixel art Ie. developers that never saw or played an NES game.
Another great video ! May I suggest another video game music video ? I think the music and sound effects are so important in a game. Back in the day when my Genesis stop playing sounds it was the end of the world for me 😫.
Did you do Alwa's Awakening? It's a retro-style flip-screen Metroidvania that's apparently native software for the Evercade, AND it has a downscaled NES version you can play on emus and real systems.
Finally someone says TATE instead of Tahtay, almost subbed just because of that. Ever consider adding links to the developers/ pages you cover in the description?

Xenocrisis is going for the Doom status at this point :)
