I have read that the mother cuckoo will watch the nest to make sure her offspring is being fed. This pair didn’t feed it as much, so the mother of the cuckoo may have raided the nest and the little bastard cuckoo was accidentally killed. I hate this bird species. I doubt it "saw through" the parasitism, but it was more likely a purposeful ignoring of feeding and starving given the development difference that would have happened if it was the same species(happens frequently) or not.
Those are magpies, same family group as crows, very intelligent birds that can see through the cuckoos' scam. They only raise the cuckoo if they see advantage in doing so. Else they will throw the cuckoo away, just like this couple did as they didn't have their own to raise anymore for some reason.
