This is actually a huge credit to the artists behind Myst. I once tried making a game like that using photographs and let me tell you, visual continuity is SUPER hard.

when you said the Myst run was only 42 seconds, I thought to myself that I could probably run that, but seeing the run in action was insane. Even though he was just clicking things, the speed and precision of those clicks were nothing short of astounding.
Everyone in the Myst speedrunning community (it's small, but we exist!) is scared of the precision that keyofw (and veo, the guy on 2nd place) has in specifically the "fireplace", where the code is input on the grid. It's magical
A quick comment on what you said about Riven: Technically, you do not need to read the codes to finish the game, as the game code in the beginning is generated from game start. Even though it's a 1/3125 chance, I have been doing some grinds to do an "impossible" ending run for the first time ever recorded. If it ever happens, it will be about 40-50 seconds long, though it wouldn't qualify for a "best" ending playthrough and would be on a seperate board, if at all. Also worth note is that, for the first time in like 9 years, Myst, Riven and Exile will be run at GDQ this January.
I just made a comment wondering if this is possible. I assumed it was 1/99999 because it had a 5 digit code in the video. I guess the tribe only counted in base 5. I hope you get it, that would be awesome. I likened it to Abnys Triple Wethertenko. That took him over 2 months with 25k tries, although his attemps only took about 10 seconds. Anyway, good luck!
Is it completely random, or is there a system to it? Is every number independent from each other or do they rely on each other, e.g. if one says a certain number then the others cannot repeat that number.
Dirty Poul Dirty Poul based on the fact Gelly said 3125, it’s likely they just count in base 5. So that means they only have 5 symbols for numbers. So the codes would go up in ascending order like this: 00001,00002,00003,00004,00011,00012,00013...... all the way to 44444 44444 in base 5 is equal to 3125 in base 10
@@DirtyPoul I have read the source code. All digits are strictly independent. We've seen examples of codes like 33333, too, which you would think they'd try to prevent, but have not. It's a random tossup, using some rand function that likely isn't manipulateable

Thank you Karl for the shout-out! Puzzle game speedruns are often overlooked but surprisingly nuanced when you get into them. I can't speak to the number of times that I've looked for visual cues or other optimizations for perfect mouse placement or found shorter phrases or words to type into the text parser.
I feel the speedrun of Riven and Myst would have taken way longer back in the day, because the computer would have taken way longer to load the next screen.
Nevermind the fact that Riven was on 4 CDs, one for each island environment and every time you travelled from one island to another you had to swap CDs

Just a comment about memorization in The Witness - it's not actually as hard as you might expect, the paths you trace for the solutions aren't completely abstract. If you had to draw all the solutions on to identical blank grids, it would be much more difficult. You can remember how the path traces around puzzle elements, or associate shapes or sequences with the solutions. It took me around a week of doing a couple runs per day to get to a point where I didn't have to look up any solutions, but what required the most practice in the end is the mouse movement, since even just a 1% increase in speed can save you 10 seconds over the entire run. I find the game very satisfying to run for specifically the reason that your improvement is very continuous. There's no big tricks or skips, it's all just about moving your mouse quickly and accurately. That makes it so that every time you play, even if you just improve by a tiny amount, you can still lower your time by a few seconds. Every tiny improvement adds up over the course of the whole run.
Zork:Nemesis is the game I’ve been looking for after all these years! I remember playing this Myst like game that was darker when I was younger which had an amazing atmosphere but I forgot the name...all these years of casual research and nothing till this video! Thank you so so much
There is also a small group of people speedrunning Return to Zork. There’s a pretty crazy glitch they use to duplicate parts of a disc you need to get to the end of the game (which naturally you would collect throughout the game). It’s pretty cool.
@@bluepsiongamer4909 Nemesis was the game that ensured I would never play horror games, because of that damn asylum. All the other Zork games I had no issues with (tho tbh, I don't remember Return, so maybe I didn't play it).
I remember, as a kid, watching my father (rip) play myst and being blown away that a world so huge could exist in a game. He was a computer engineer and always had a knack for this kind of stuff, and it rubbed of on me as I still enjoy this type of game to this day.

Karl I really think you should check out Talos Principle. It's my favorite puzzle game of all time, and one of the key reasons is that the game is JAM PACKED with secrets that expect you to use your speedrunning/breaking out of bounds/etc gaming knowledge to escape puzzle rooms, smuggle items into other rooms, etc. I love it.
The interesting thing about the Talos Principle is that you can watch a speedrun and see almost no solution spoilers, since I think the current works record all sigils route has something like 5 intended solutions in ~130 puzzles. Since the game is built on the serious engine, there are a lot of unintended tricks like climbing onto walls, glitching things through barriers and jumping into the stratosphere.
I know I’m late but It’s my favorite game too especially when I found the cat and got to carry her at the end it was amazing because I didn’t even know that was a special ending I though that it was supposed to be the ending . But it’s something I ran into and I was so curious to get all the different endings I played it through like 4 different times and when I asked a lot of my friends they thought it was dumb and didn’t like the vibe of the game I guess . Made me sad more people don’t like it but I love that shite
It sounds amazing that you were trying to beat a game like Myst with your whole family involved. This really inspires me to try and beat a some puzzle games with my kids! The Quest for Glory game in this video seems like a good choice, as I've never played any of those games :)
funxiobolic quest for Glory; shadows of darkness. I played that as a child with my family. It was actually so broken on release that the game couldn’t be finished. We bought the game new (around 92? I believe) and I didn’t beat it until 2015 when I found a patch. I HIGHLY recommend playing shadows. Amazing game
I know I'm a year late but as a 2002 kid who played puzzle games with my family growing up it's definitely fun and worth trying if you haven't already.

Aw man, you reminded me of when my dad & I used to play lemmings together on our 386, and our piece of scrap paper that sat on the desk with all the level passwords as we progressed. I hadn't thought of that in AGES! We also played a bit of The Incredible Machine together too, but I remember playing solo more often by then. My dad is not at all a videogame person, but I remember that so fondly.

I was around 4-5 in this time, some of my earliest memories just surfaced and I completely forgot about this until now. wow. Some of my earliest gaming memories were playing Myst and Riven with my parents (especially my Father) on our old Mac. It warms my heart to see people still exploring these games and even pushing them to their limits.
I love Mystlike games... They've been making a very slow return, ever since Obduction was announced, but it's too bad they're still few and far between. I remember seeing a myst speedrun long ago, it really blew my mind- thanks for sharing so many great puzzle games and speedruns!
I remember the endless clones that buried the genre - Crystal Key, etc. Journeyman Project and Timelapse was pretty great though. Try out the Outer Wilds. Best puzzle game with a narrative since Myst in my opinion.
Cool to see the Antichamber run on here. Definitely my favourite modern puzzle game. No real story or anything, but the mechanics and problem solving just felt so different, but self-consistent.

One thing to note about The Witness is that there is less memorisation than you'd think. Panels that are solved through environment cues mostly need to be memorised, as do particularly difficult standalone panels, but simpler panels like most of swamp can be mostly not memorised as the puzzles can be resolved easily just from the rules on the panels. Runners need to be good at solving new puzzles anyway because there are some panels towards the end of the run (all categories) that are randomly generated.

In the early 2000s my grandmother loved puzzle games. So between the ages of like 3-9 me and my grandma would play Myst, Riven, Traitors Gate and similar games whenever we'd visit her.
These are some of my favorite games of all time, and it's amazing seeing them get some love from here of all places! The Witness and Antichamber were both incredible experiences to play, and I find myself returning to them frequently (still looking for all the secrets in the Witness!). The pace of videos lately is tremendous, keep up the amazing work!

A video about Myst, Riven, and Zork: Nemesis? Throw in Starship Titanic and you've covered all the games I spent my childhood trying to solve. I never thought I'd see those three games in a single video, let alone such a fun one.
It's so cool to see more people interested in speedruns of point and click games, even big events like gdq and esa are starting to accept this type of games, I started my speedrunning career with the secret of monkey island (I'm currently trying to climb the ladder in the sequel), at first I didn't think these games could be so fun to speedrun but they definately are
Reminds me of when I was a kid, and my mom hated video games, but with the sole exception being Dr. Mario. Not only did she like that game, but she was actually really good at it: she'd kick my ass most times in multiplayer and could do level 20 on slow.
In middle school, my English teacher played Myst during class and we had to write down everything he did in the game. At the end, he graded us on our accuracy of directions and our grammar.
If possible, I would LOVE to see more puzzle and point and click speed runs or speed runs that are atypical. Keep up the good work, Karl and congrats on the kid!

I played a ton of puzzle games as a kid. I remember when Antichamber came out my best friend came over and we spent hours playing it side by side, taking turns on the controls while the other watched. That was such a fun weekend. Turns out we were overthinking things a lot, and I’m terrible with learning and remembering maps and layouts which certainly made things more difficult for us because I’d be messing around in a room that I didn’t realize we had already been through and solved. Wonderfully fun times though. I got the same excitement when Portal 2 came out and my cousin and I played through the coop together.

To add on to Karl's explanation of how popular Myst was: Computers didn't all come with CD-ROM drives at the time, but Myst was played on CD. It was so popular that CD-ROM drives became essentially standard on all computers because you couldn't sell a new computer if it couldn't play Myst.

The Witness is one of my favourite puzzle games. Completing that game felt so relieving, especially considering the end is timed. Took a few attempts and a night to clear my head of frustration. Beautiful colours and textures to it as well

Zork sure is a blast from the past. My first one was the grand inquisitor but I'd always sit next to my dad while he played the text adventure ones. I'd help draw the maps and it was a fun thing to do together
I always watched my older brother play games like Monkey Island. I loved watching him play them and it's probably the reason why I enjoy watching people play games more than playing them myself.
The discovery element of The Witness is awesome. Personally I found something early on that lead to a, more or less, hidden section of the game and it blew me away.
I love both The Witness and Antichamber ^^ Antichamber loves messing with your brain parts, a great example is the staircase in the beginning. You'll be sitting there "Come on game, wtf?? 🤔" Concerning The Witness, I felt that it does ease you in quite a lot in how the puzzles work initially. Once you've got the basics, the rest comes more or less naturally. Except for the castle and the colour puzzles, those can be a bit more fiddly.
I might try out The Witness even tho I am not into puzzle games. I loved "pathfinding" games as child and it makes me giddy by just looking at it. Maybe that's why I enjoy speedrun explanations more than actual speedruns. Seeing, knowing how is much more enjoyable for me, or if you like: seeing the path that leads to the outcome. Thank you for introducing these games to me. :)
As someone that recently has been focusing on puzzle game TASing (and planning to extend that further, but mostly for SNES games), I found this to be an interesting watch, and I also enjoy embracing the fascination that can come with these games, especially when coupled with speed optimization challenges added to them. Although I don't have much experience with many of the kinds of puzzle games that were presented in the video, one older puzzle game that I played (and managed to solve unassisted) that is also quite intriguing would be ''The Legend of Kyrandia''. And (to my happy surprise) some time ago I also found out that Nach (co-admin of TASVideos) based on his personal page on TASVideos also knows about that game and even has it on his wish list for game TASes, even.
I played Kings Quest VI when I was younger. Absolutely loved that game, still have it on CDROM. Those were the days, restarting in MSDOS Mode and running your games through the terminal.
So pumped to see Zork Nemesis on this list. I grew up playing that and Return to Zork with my family. I highly recommend The Talos Principle as a great puzzle game with a great backstory.
Discworld is one of my favorite point and click style puzzle games. Funny and enjoyable romp through Terry Pratchett's fictional world as a bumbling wizard and plenty of humor along the way.
I remember that these puzzle games where everywhere, I buyed some corn flakes at it has a puzzle game on a cd in it as a kid. Realy loved this games. Cannot get them to run on modern hardware sadly.
I actually bought The Witness as a result of this video, and had a great time playing it with my 5yo on the couch over Christmas. We're a long way off WR pace, It took us a leisurely 45 hours over many sessions to get to the "End" but you're not wrong about the fun of solving puzzles together as a family.
I love watching a youtuber called "CarlSagan42" speedrun Mario Maker puzzles. The way he optimises some of them, even exploiting mechanics like POW waves to gain an incredible time increase is crazy to me.

Aw man, you reminded me of when my dad & I used to play lemmings together on our 386, and our piece of scrap paper that sat on the desk with all the level passwords as we progressed. I hadn't thought of that in AGES! We also played a bit of The Incredible Machine together too, but I remember playing solo more often by then. My dad is not at all a videogame person, but I remember that so fondly.
There was a free-movement version of Myst called RealMyst. It would take much longer to speedrun than the original.

Thank you for this video. The intro with Myst brought me to tears. Memories of me and my father playing this came up. I was around 4-5 in this time, some of my earliest memories just surfaced and I completely forgot about this until now. wow. Some of my earliest gaming memories were playing Myst and Riven with my parents (especially my Father) on our old Mac. It warms my heart to see people still exploring these games and even pushing them to their limits.

I love Mystlike games... They've been making a very slow return, ever since Obduction was announced, but it's too bad they're still few and far between.

I remember the endless clones that buried the genre - Crystal Key, etc. Journeyman Project and Timelapse was pretty great though.
Try out the Outer Wilds. Best puzzle game with a narrative since Myst in my opinion.

No real story or anything, but the mechanics and problem solving just felt so different, but self-consistent.

Being able to complete this kind of games from the start is one of my favourite things about Outer Wilds
One thing to note about The Witness is that there is less memorisation than you'd think.
Panels that are solved through environment cues mostly need to be memorised, as do particularly difficult standalone panels, but simpler panels like most of swamp can be mostly not memorised as the puzzles can be resolved easily just from the rules on the panels.
Runners need to be good at solving new puzzles anyway because there are some panels towards the end of the run (all categories) that are randomly generated.

In the early 2000s my grandmother loved puzzle games. So between the ages of like 3-9 me and my grandma would play Myst, Riven, Traitors Gate and similar games whenever we'd visit her.
These are some of my favorite games of all time, and it's amazing seeing them get some love from here of all places! The Witness and Antichamber were both incredible experiences to play, and I find myself returning to them frequently (still looking for all the secrets in the Witness!).
The pace of videos lately is tremendous, keep up the amazing work!

It's so cool to see more people interested in speedruns of point and click games, even big events like gdq and esa are starting to accept this type of games, I started my speedrunning career with the secret of monkey island (I'm currently trying to climb the ladder in the sequel), at first I didn't think these games could be so fun to speedrun but they definately are

Antichamber is my favorite puzzle game of all time. Always happy to see more attention to it.
Reminds me of when I was a kid, and my mom hated video games, but with the sole exception being Dr. Mario. Not only did she like that game, but she was actually really good at it: she'd kick my ass most times in multiplayer and could do level 20 on slow.

In middle school, my English teacher played Myst during class and we had to write down everything he did in the game. At the end, he graded us on our accuracy of directions and our grammar.
That's gotta be the best teacher of all time. Or he found the best excuse to play Myst during work. Very clever

Thank you so much that you prsented the game antichamber. Its one of my favorite games and still waiting for a good competitor.
I played a ton of puzzle games as a kid. I remember when Antichamber came out my best friend came over and we spent hours playing it side by side, taking turns on the controls while the other watched. That was such a fun weekend. Turns out we were overthinking things a lot, and I’m terrible with learning and remembering maps and layouts which certainly made things more difficult for us because I’d be messing around in a room that I didn’t realize we had already been through and solved. Wonderfully fun times though. I got the same excitement when Portal 2 came out and my cousin and I played through the coop together.
I just love the graphics of Myst and other similar games. There’s a charm to them.

To add on to Karl's explanation of how popular Myst was: Computers didn't all come with CD-ROM drives at the time, but Myst was played on CD. It was so popular that CD-ROM drives became essentially standard on all computers because you couldn't sell a new computer if it couldn't play Myst.

The Witness is one of my favourite puzzle games. Completing that game felt so relieving, especially considering the end is timed. Took a few attempts and a night to clear my head of frustration. Beautiful colours and textures to it as well

Absolutely.... I have to say that growing up on Myst, Grim Fandango, Blade Runner and the Monkey Island series was very special.
Zork sure is a blast from the past. My first one was the grand inquisitor but I'd always sit next to my dad while he played the text adventure ones. I'd help draw the maps and it was a fun thing to do together
My mom sister and I used to play myst together when it came out it was such a great memory.

I always watched my older brother play games like Monkey Island. I loved watching him play them and it's probably the reason why I enjoy watching people play games more than playing them myself.
With Myst being remade for modern gameplay and even VR, I blasted through it with the memories from 20 years ago but in VR.
The discovery element of The Witness is awesome.
Personally I found something early on that lead to a, more or less, hidden section of the game and it blew me away.

I love both The Witness and Antichamber ^^ Antichamber loves messing with your brain parts, a great example is the staircase in the beginning. You'll be sitting there "Come on game, wtf?? 🤔" Concerning The Witness, I felt that it does ease you in quite a lot in how the puzzles work initially. Once you've got the basics, the rest comes more or less naturally. Except for the castle and the colour puzzles, those can be a bit more fiddly.
My sister and I used to play the Nancy Drew games when we were younger. It was the first time either of us learned the concept of easter eggs.

I might try out The Witness even tho I am not into puzzle games. I loved "pathfinding" games as child and it makes me giddy by just looking at it. Maybe that's why I enjoy speedrun explanations more than actual speedruns. Seeing, knowing how is much more enjoyable for me, or if you like: seeing the path that leads to the outcome.

As someone that recently has been focusing on puzzle game TASing (and planning to extend that further, but mostly for SNES games), I found this to be an interesting watch, and I also enjoy embracing the fascination that can come with these games, especially when coupled with speed optimization challenges added to them. Although I don't have much experience with many of the kinds of puzzle games that were presented in the video, one older puzzle game that I played (and managed to solve unassisted) that is also quite intriguing would be ''The Legend of Kyrandia''. And (to my happy surprise) some time ago I also found out that Nach (co-admin of TASVideos) based on his personal page on TASVideos also knows about that game and even has it on his wish list for game TASes, even.
I played Kings Quest VI when I was younger. Absolutely loved that game, still have it on CDROM. Those were the days, restarting in MSDOS Mode and running your games through the terminal.
So pumped to see Zork Nemesis on this list. I grew up playing that and Return to Zork with my family. I highly recommend The Talos Principle as a great puzzle game with a great backstory.
Discworld is one of my favorite point and click style puzzle games. Funny and enjoyable romp through Terry Pratchett's fictional world as a bumbling wizard and plenty of humor along the way.
I remember that these puzzle games where everywhere, I buyed some corn flakes at it has a puzzle game on a cd in it as a kid. Realy loved this games. Cannot get them to run on modern hardware sadly.

I have played through it at least 3 times on different platforms.
I actually bought The Witness as a result of this video, and had a great time playing it with my 5yo on the couch over Christmas. We're a long way off WR pace, It took us a leisurely 45 hours over many sessions to get to the "End" but you're not wrong about the fun of solving puzzles together as a family.

I love watching a youtuber called "CarlSagan42" speedrun Mario Maker puzzles. The way he optimises some of them, even exploiting mechanics like POW waves to gain an incredible time increase is crazy to me.
