Japanese radio callisthenics were born in 1928 and have been performed in schools and workplaces ever since for building HEALTH. The programme is also used to build a sense of COMMUNITY in neighbourhoods, where the exercises are performed all together by young and old alike. So what is the appeal of radio callisthenics and why, given they were inspired by the exercises broadcast on American radio in the 1920's, do they endure into the 21st century?
What are radio callisthenics?
In a nutshell, they are simply exercises set to a musical radio accompaniment. Every morning an instructor and music will guide you through the movements. It is a workout that practically every Japanese person knows by heart, having learnt it from a very young age.
It is an extremely popular form of exercise in Japan and it is estimated up to 10 MILLION people practice it regularly. It is not quite as common as it was (with some seeing it as quaint piece of nostalgia), but that is as much to do with what killed off the original American version in the 1930's - competition & new ideas. The value of the exercises has not changed. The benefits have not changed. It is culture that has changed. That is slowly starting to change back however, as its many health benefits are once again championed.
What are the fitness benefits of these exercises?
The primary benefit is that they put joints through their full range of possible motion. In most daily life, joint movements usually fall well short of their full range of motion, so muscles can gradually shrink.
Simply put your body through a full range of motion every day and you can see how obvious it is that you will keep 'working better' for longer.
The exercises can also improve agility and posture which can in turn help with simple things like getting up from a chair, or getting down onto the ground.
Furthermore, gentle exercises such as these in the morning gets the blood flowing around your body, which in turn will energise you, loosen your joints and get rid of accumulated stiffness.
Does this mean all Japanese people are fit?
Under 4% of Japanese people are considered 'obese', and while there are of course many factors at play here, the fact so many Japanese take part in a daily exercise routine surely must play a part.
Also a great many Japanese people remain 'fitter' for longer - i.e. keeping functionally active well into old age. Again, a lifetime of performing stretching and movement based exercises is a likely piece of the puzzle.
Personally I don't bother with the music (I prefer my own), so don't let that put you off.
An eBook bundle is now available from the Internal Force Fitness website that breaks down each of the 3 Radio Taiso routines! www.internalforcefitness.com/product/radio-taiso-exercises-ebook-bundle/
ikigai book brought me here.. now this is part of my daily routine...
Same here, but just starting,so I was wondering,as its said that the duration of the warm-up is 5mins,I wonder is this the full excessive as video is 3.30mins
Or it's a cycle of repeating 🙄
@@celuvka15 you can find the part 2 of radio taiso in youtube as well...
Omggg same
Same here. It was my first routine today. 😊😊
Started doing this little routine every day about 8 weeks ago and I can definitely feel a difference in flexibility/energy boost from it. It's also perfect for stretching stiff neck/shoulder muscles from sitting at the computer all day so more helpful than ever.
Lioglossed- does it really help loosen up shoulders n back which gets stiff after sitting in front of laptop the whole day ?
@@garimasat not op, but I can attest it really does aide in relieving every kind of muscle pain you can imagine. When not-as-frequently-conditioned supporting muscles are regularly stretched, they are better able to take the strain off of overused muscles. For me, I feel the benefit greatly in my knees (and recently even in my sore vaccine arm) when I rajio taiso everyday. I recently encouraged my boyfriend to try for his computer work neck strain, and he's also starting to feel the difference. It's tried and true over time.
@@garimasat yes it does help for me
Who all came here after reading ikigai..
me me me😂😂
Me
Yes
I did..hehe

I was raised in Japan, and I remember doing this everyday at school!! I never thought of anything until now that I am in my 40s, I can see the health benefit of this gentle stretch. Totally recommend this!
Lucky u r
This 3 minute routine done every hour from a sedentary job position or whenever, is a great benefit. Let's say done once waking up, 6 times at the job, and once an hour or 2 before bedtime means 24 minutes of exercise has been done. I actually use most of these movements to include yoga, martial arts excercises and movements and the stuff I learned from US Army PT in recent months, significantly lowered my A1C from 9 down to 7.1 my triglicerides from 900+ to 538.
This morning, I was doing these exercises in my room and a cricket crawled in under my doorframe, stared for a minute, then crawled back out. I felt like he was judging me.
Lol 😂
😊
That's good luck! 😄
Ahahah this is really funny
I laughed out loud irl hahaha
I always feel so energized after this exercise, it's a great addition to my mornings 💕
I love how the Japanese game designers literally animated this into ACNH. Music and moves and all. I love it.
Do the same for hello Kitty Island adventure
It was in the original gamecube/n64 game too! i would get up at 6 am for the event haha
I spent over two years at Fuchu Prison, in Tokyo, in the mid-1990s. We did these exercises every day before work in the prison factory. Great routine!
Jan, many thanks for the comment. I would love to ask you a few questions about your experiences of the program. If you're interested please drop me a note at internalforcefitness@gmail.com Cheers, Richie.
interested in prison life in japan!
if you don't mind me asking, how did you end up there? cool story
@@chillipepper4060 It was a case of wrong place, wrong time. Wrong drugs, lol . I was in transit, with a 12-hr layover, en route from Bangkok to Vancouver, and carrying nearly 100 grams of pure heroin. I could've stayed in the airport lounge but my ticket included a free hotel room. Just wanted to lie down for a few hours. It had worked fine before but not this time. I was young and stupid and addicted to smoking heroin.
Drugs are bad, m'kay. Lol
Sentenced to 3-½ years, served 28 months before being paroled and deported home.
@Jan Mueller thank you for explaining! Sounds like a very interesting experience you had. I'm glad they included these calisthenics in your routine. Did you find a language barrier during your time?
I already commented here to also say that I came from the book of the two amazing writers, but I just wanted to say that I did this for the first time just now. I am a 21 year old man who first felt ridiculous standing in his bathroom doing strange movements with piano music supporting it. But after doing this I feel vital, my heart is pumping and I feel awake and ready for the day.
this is great to everyday and can help maintain a very basic level of fitness even you dont do any other exercise. It's especially helpful for back strengthening to avoid back injuries or those "fallen and cant get up" situations.
This is probably the best wake up exercise ever. It's so easy but also very effective
First time doing this routine and I already feel significantly less cramped up and stiff in my back and shoulders. This is absolutely going to become my new daily morning wake up routine 😁
For me too 😄
We used to do this exercises at a Hino Motors assembly plant, I had chronic back pain which disappeared with this routine.
I read the book ikigai and wanted to really implement new things to my routine. Hence the radio taiso exercise ❤
I’ll be 100 years old doing this in my garden, you watch me
right on you go you

I like it! Sometimes it feels a bit too fast for me... don't forget that you can always change the playback speed of the video to 0.75 or 0.50 and get the same exercise but at a slightly slower pace.
This has become a treasured part of my morning routine. Watching my husband do it with me and smacking his extra long limbs on the ceiling fan is an extra highlight. Bonus: we did it on our wedding day to get us awake and out the door at 7am. :)
Recently worked at a Japanese Construction Company and I was curious about that and finally found it here and it was fun to do it every morning
Gonna miss doing that morning exercise since I left yesterday.
My cat gave me the dirtiest look ever when I did this for the first time... and turned away in disapproval
Your cat's just being a hater
I, too have judgey cats
Same, my cat is not a fan.
oddly helped identify some weak points in my shoulders I didn't know I had. I wanted to do this to get a satisfying stretch at my desk. Not as much leg stuff as I thought I needed but it was perfect!

Been doing this lately, and it’s the only exercise routine I could keep, probably because it’s short and fun at the same time effective. It just gives me that ‘Japanese’ feeling! I love it!
I used to teach English at a Japanese JHS and we did these exercises before Sports Day and the school marathon, with hundreds of students. I was the only one who didn't know all the moves! haha
looks stupid right?? we had to do this exercises when i was kid every day from 6 in the morning while summer vacation lol
Hahaha, yeap, its something everyone knows... this song has been used for... omg, decades. I am 42, and I know we did this when I was a little child!
Discovered this channel 3 days ago and is a great addition to morning routine and late afternoon too.
unironically a great addition to anyone's day
Thank you so much...I appreciate so much that it is in English.

this video brings me to my happy place
Instanty help with stiffness of my neck & shoulders! I love this exercise ❤️
Thank you for posting this, it really helps me feel better fast! Especially with so much remote working due to pandemic.
Oh. Now i am fighting a frozen shoulder/ inflammation …Let’s see what can I do… Millions do this routine daily? Amazing!
Ikigai book brought me here too and I’m looking forward to starting the exercises 🥰
Hot damn, my back and neck were hurting for days, i tried this and even though i didnt do the "leg touching" forms properly (too fat haha) my back feels like its reborn, no more pain.
im gonna do this daily now!
We used to do this in elementary school every morning before school, the good times 💗💗💗
The Book ‘ikigai’ brought me here. It’s my first step and wanna practice ‘Radio Taiso ‘ everyday .
we used to do this in school every morning 😩💗
I believe u, even ur name is in Japanese... :)
This is so incredibly healthy for being so simple to do at least most of it on a good day 😅
Excellent wakeup routine!
First time ever taking part, did it twice (the second time was easier because it is pretty fast). Fun and provided a good workout.
JUST READ IKIGAI and this book brings me here.
I watch this every day
Great exercise when you have a foot injury (minus the jumping).
There is apparently a 5 minute warm up routine to do before doing these exercises, which makes sense since these exercises are quite fast and rigorous.
The way my arm muscles burn after a mere 3.5 min tells me I don't get nearly enough exercise
Gracias por la traducción y por compartir estos ejercicios que se que se ha comprobado su efecto positivo en la salud aunque se vean sencillos…. Pero lo que los hace efectivos es la constancia
kinda tragic that i'm too stiff to do most of these or even struggle the rhythm, i'm better off doing these multiple times a day, every day xD
Same here. I'm 26. Gotta stretch more.
Don't worry if you can't do the whole routine or all the movements. Just do what you can, adjust to limited swings and more slowly. If you get more flexible, gradually build up. Any movement is good for you. Good luck!
Here is a useful comment from someone else about slowing it down: I like it! Sometimes it feels a bit too fast for me... don't forget that you can always change the playback speed of the video to 0.75 or 0.50 and get the same exercise but at a slightly slower pace.
Well played and God bless you.
Been meaning to do morning stretches for while now. Saw this while playing Boku No Natsuyasumi and thought it looked so nice 😌Going to try to incorporate this into my daily morning routine
after my first week of german volume training, this made me realize just how sore I was in the morning
Taisoo...u learn new everytime when u read something new.ikigai
Ma bellissimo! È il riscaldamento pre- jujitsu che ho fatto per anni!!!! È ora di riprendere le buone abitudini!
I wish we could do this at amazon. We have a guide but it looks like we are supposed to do it on our own. If we did this I'd be more likely to be stretched well .
I found this from a manga bc one of the characters said it should be fine if they just do these radio exercises at the party they’re at & 1. This makes that line so much funnier 2. I honestly feel like I should start doing this
heyy this being a fun and refreshing! Loving it!!
I miss those days when we used to do this as daily routine when i used to work for Toyota
Gotta be a good way to start the day
Thanks to Ikigai Book i was brought here. 😁
Yes Ikigai book i read & started Radio exercise
I love to do this simple routine in the morning 👍
Ikigai book brought me here! I love it!
Love these exercises and music ❤
I honestly am just to young for my body to be attacking me the way it is so I figured I give these a shot for the next couple of months
Excellent 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽
re:zero gang we out here. LETS GET TO 100 WOOOOOOOO
The book ikigai helps me to find this
aMAzing video quality
Excellent 👍
FINALLY a method to unroll my long shirt sleeves that actually WORKS
Every workers routine at 7:15am at Isuzu Philippines Corporation
I do this every night before bed and I sleep really well.
Similar to Indian club swinging and Canadian Air Force program which just shows that everyone knew and lived healthy before the tv and magazines turned fitness into a money game
Yotsuba Vol4 brought me here. No regrets
im still looking for the N. 2 Excercises
"Radio Exercise 1 and 2 English" is what you're looking for
I feel a lot looser after doing this, I recommend to people with stiff shoulders.
Very fun and energizing 😗
Fun Fact japaniese people in some places still perform Radio Exercise aka ラジオ体操 in Japaniese
Victory! VICTORY! *VICTORY!*
Ikigai is the main reason to be here ❤
Don't know about you guys but I was expecting the Victory!! pose
I am here because of the link provided by HR
This is the first time hearing rajio taiso in English.
subaru would be proud
VICTORY!
I hope you would have the part 3 for this.
is there part 2? can you comment the link please if there is. thank you
@@kikei8873 ua-cam.com/play/PLxrA1j5teL2EWswFg0MYIMC_H-j899IeH.html part 2, I’m looking for part 3
I searched for this exercise after seeing it in an episode of Detective Conan :)
how often do you do this? I've done it two times back to back and I feel better already. I should keep at it. Because I have so little time, short things like this are the only ones I can do. :)
It's really up to you how often you do it, a couple of times back to back is a great idea. Another way is to follow a 'start and finish' principle - do it at the start of your working day, then at the finish. This way it will act as a little book-end to sitting at your desk etc.
@@Internalforcefitness Thank you very much for the answer. :)
I'll probably go with the second option. It really helps my back.
This sounds so weird in English
I like it Japanese!
I like it
Several of these are ballet exercises.
I FEEL SO GOOD ?!
Victory!!!
Norwegian wood by haruki murakami brought me here 😅
Does anyone have a video of a similar but longer exercise? Thanks!
