Overcast day in November, astroturf, heartland of America, two teams in red, option offenses, All-America players, mammoth linemen, and absolutely everything on the line...there was nothing in college football like the Nebraska-Oklahoma rivalry in the '70s and '80s.
Dear Nebraska and Oklahoma AD's please sign a permanent contract to play each other every year. This was a great rivalry, if not the most entertaining during the 70s and 80s
@@leebart7172 That's right cause the game was in November on Thanksgiving weekend both were highly ranked in the college football polls plus the conference title was on the line & coaching icons Barry Switzer & Tom Osborne
I loved the late 70s-80s Oklahoma Sooners. From Thomas Lott to JC Watts to Danny Bradley to (snicker) Troy Aikman, to ( my favorite ) Jamelle Holloway to Charles Thompson. God I miss the wishbone!
Casillas, Murphy, and Bosworth were absolutely dominant in this game. Holieway and Keith Jackson were beasts. We ran that Husker defense ragged that day. The story of the game was OU’s defense though. Nebraska wasn’t ready for that kind of speed coming from a defense.
Oklahoma came back to life that season. It was a phenomenal season for those hard driving Sooners. I was delighted that they got the national title that year.
Jamelle didn't have the rb's that Jack and Steve had, Greg Pruitt and Joe Washington respectively. Under Jamelle, OU only lost 2 games from '85 to '87. Both to Miami and he only truly played in one of those games, coming in for injured Troy Aikman. I grew up in Lincoln and one player we all feared was Jamelle Hollieway. And Billy Sims. And Elvis Peacock, Buster Rhymes, David Collins, Spencer Tillman, Charles Thompson, Marcus Dupree, Keith Jackson... Ok! Ok! They were all great. You all got to enjoy a major wealth of talent for two decades plus! The pain still lingers.
Adrian Peterson (#2 Heisman voting) averaged 5.4 yard per carry. Barry Sanders (OSU record-breaking Heisman winner, considered #2 back in NFL history) averaged 6.8 yards per carry. Billy Sims (Heisman winner) averaged 7 yards per carry. Marcus Dupree (potentially the best ever) averaged about 8 yards per carry as an underclassman. Keith Jackson averaged, what, TWENTY yards per carry! Yet they only gave it to him like twice per game. Possibly the most under-utilized superstar in college football history.
Holieway was great on the reading the Option presnap reads. But, when it came to running pitch element of the Option. He Suck big time. He kept it more than pitched it. His pitches were all over the place. Watch this game and you will see it first hand. The best Complete Option was Lott/Watts were the best on all elements of the triple Option. Watts was a QB way before his time..
@@80sman84 I saw all of them in person going back to Jack Mildren. For making a perfect read and pitching it, I'll take JC Watts. But for the entire package I'll take Holieway. Steve Davis a very close #2
Wow, That Jackson reverse was beautiful. If you watch him from the snap you can see him throw a block and engage the end then turn away. Sold it beautifully.
This literally might be the first football game I ever watched. I was born in 1982. I have hazy memories of these games in the mid-to-late 80s. This was one of the greatest series in college football history, and I’m glad it’s going to be renewed this season. Nebraska never should have left the Big XII.
I couldn't agree more. One of, if not the most, respectful rivalries in the country. Switzer-Osborne. When they were both gone, it lost some of its luster. Still.....
I still have bad flashbacks of the reverse plays of this game some 34 years later😳🤪.... The Sooners overwhelmed my Huskers that day once they started rolling.
Imagine if Marcus Dupree had stayed. This team would be considered one of the best in college history. Kind of like Nebraska was in 1984........until the Orange 🍊 bowl.
DuPree was a cancer to the football team. Good riddance. Karma ruined his football career with a knee injury in the USFL's Portland Breakers. If he had stayed in shape and not gained 40 pounds between the last regular season game and the Sun Bowl, they might not have lost the game. He could have had 400+ yards rushing, but he gassed out after every long run and got caught from behind. He had to take the series off, because he lost his breath. He was his own worst enemy.
Oh boy, Frank Broiles shows his bias towards Osborne and Nebraska throughout this broadcast. Especially the way he challenged the "inadvertent whistle" controversy.
OU's run of 4 in a row vs NU after Neb beat OU 3 straight from 81-83, Switzer's last year was 88 and that would be the next year after this that OU hosted NU, for some reason NU was able to host OU in back to back years 86-87. Switzer ended up 12-5 vs Osborne. Bowden went 6-2 vs Osborn. Those are the only 2 coaches I can think of who played NU 2 more times who had winning records against Dr Tom, other than Don James of UW. (beat NU back to back years 91-92).
When OSU came into the Big 8, it messed up the rotation. The Big 8 wanted to correct that, by having OU play at NU and OSU twice in a row. No idea why they waited until 1986 to do it.
5th year in a row Nebraska was reasonably close to having a shot at the national championship if one game goes the other way. But this one wasn't even close. I was 10. I can still remember listening in the truck with my dad, 27-0 til the fumble return. After this Nebraska got gradually just a little bit further away from that top 5, having a shot at the NC, with the end of the '88-'92 seasons making that clear. None of those '80s & '90s teams (except for '94) were a serious passing threat after Gill & Fryar in '83, but this was one of the worst. Mccathorn clayton. OU could focus on Dubose. Maybe it was the '85 NU defense, but it's kind of hard to believe only FSU & OU got them in the regular season, this '85 team sucked at passing, look up Clayton stats.
Eric Mitchell who was holieways backup was very very good! Barry Switzer once said he was the fastest qb he ever recruited! I’m telling you now Mitchell was just as good if not better than holieway! Look at his highlights if you don’t believe me!y
@@jett713 Eric was responsible for 100% of Nebraska's entire scoring in this game, I hate to say. The funnest wishbone QB to ever watch, though! His TD run in the 86 UCLA game is the stuff of legend.
one thing I see watching this... there was a lot of good sportmanship between these teams... a lot of these guys were helping each other up after plays... look at 1:21:39 when the guy on the Nebraska sidelines catches Holieway and keeps him from getting hurt... dont see a lot of that these days...
They were wishbone QBs. The NFL does not want wishbone QBs, the NFL wants 6 foot 3 inch drop-back passing QBs. I remember plenty of games in the 80s when OU did not throw the ball once the whole game, we just lined and and said "here comes the option, try to stop it."
Dont forget Turner Gill nor Major Harris from Nebraska and West Virginia respectively. Neither of those players were given much of a shot either (even though they threw the ball much more often). Now that the NFL coaches are more creative similar style players are now getting a chance.
@Randall Denison Absolutely. OU had a couple of them who could throw just enough that they weren't completely useless. Like Steve Davis who was awful his first year but developed into an acceptable thrower. But most of them couldn't throw the ball out of a boat and hit water.
the announcer said Osborn was the 2nd best coach....did he forget about bear bryant, because obviously Switzer is # 1.....wel maybe he had osborn ahead of Bryant....not sure.
@Randall Denison Bryant had 6 in 38 yrs coaching, Switzer 3 in 16 yrs, advantage Switzer. Switzer had a much higher win % and a better Bowl game win % than Bryant also. So yea, Switzer is #1.Switzer also has a super bowl win. Boomer Sooner !!

Nothing better than hear the great Keith Jackson call a touchdown for the great TE Keith Jackson. Boomer Sooner!
"He's runnin out of gas"
Me: where???
The announcer Jackson never liked OU . Throughout his career he despised OU.
Bryan Bosworth was the best LBer in college football history. Watching him in this game is unbelievable.
