Two of the greatest LBs ever in college football, Shane Conlan and Brian Bosworth.

As a Sooner fan, this era of OU football was absolutely amazing. Dominating defense, which the 1985 team is still considered one of the greatest ever defensively, and a relentless wishbone attack with a deep threat from Keith Jackson, one of the greatest tight ends ever(1 in 4 catches were for touchdowns). From 1985-1987, Oklahoma lost to only one team....Miami. And it happened 3 times in 3 years. The only reason Oklahoma got the National Championship was Tennessee randomly beating the Hurricanes this same night. Such a fun time to be a fan of Oklahoma.

in looking at the Derrick Shepard hit...... this was before they started the "neck-spine" protocol that really started in the pros with the Dennis Byrd neck injury with the Jets

on last thing.*If you have ever watched the movie "Naked Gun" & Leslie Neilson's Over-The-Top dancing home plate ump, it was like the Ref is copying that to purposely be the focal point of the game.

As a 16 years old born in 2006, this is absolutely fascinating. Jim Harbaugh still in college, Barry Switzer as a college coach.

This was the only game Penn States QB John Shaffer ever lost. He went 66-1 from 8th grade through college. Pretty amazing record

Impressive record, but he was the definition of a game manager. PSU notoriously relied on the running game and defense to win games in this era

In 1985, Penn State had the inside track to the National Championship. But they lost to Oklahoma and Oklahoma snagged the National Championship undisputed when Miami lost in the Sugar Bowl.
In 1986, both Penn State and Miami had revenge on their minds for what happened in 1985. Miami defeated Oklahoma enroute to the Fiesta Bowl match against Penn State. But Penn State finished the job in 1986 and Miami came up just short.
In 1987, Miami was still searching for their National Championship. To make it to the top, they had to beat Oklahoma. They did. In the end, these 3 programs each grabbed a National Championship.
Miami would dominate in 1988 and 89 and prove to be the Team of the Decade. Penn State would have up-and-down years in 1987, 88, and 89 following their run of dominance through 1986.

I thought the announcers were going to cry on the air. As usual, the announcing is lopsided for the yanks. Notice Pen State was ranked #1, but got beat. It took the east forever to come to grips with not winning all the time.

I actually have a memory of this game and it was personal/ The previous summer my family had gone on vacation to Washington D.C. and when we stayed in Washington PA for a night we met a Penn St student who was a student trainer for the football team. When we saw this matchup my family wondered if she was working on the sidelines that night as she was a very nice young lady(I’m guessing she was 21 or 22 at the time)

I love the wishbone offense, but it needs a viable passing attack to make it go. The quarterback needs to give 100 plus passing yards a game. Alabama ran the wishbone the best under Bear Bryant. They were able incorporate a respectable passing game within it. Oklahoma had much better athletes, but were never able to do this.

I’m a Nebraska fan, but Oklahoma had the best athletes in the country and all of college football for decades believe me they did just fine running their wishbone. I hated these bastards but they ran that wishbone pretty much perfection believe me they didn’t need to really do much different because they could’ve won about seven national championships by Barry Switzer was their coach. They did win three and could’ve won three or four other ones And I watched it firsthand because I’m a husker fan and we should’ve won six or seven national titles and we didn’t win because we’ve lost close games to them sooner. Magic They called it.
