Will Falken Wildpeak A/T4W 275/70r17 Tires Fit a Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Without Modification?

- I installed a set of Falken Wildpeak A/T4W 275/70r17 tires on my 2023 Toyota 4RunnerTRD Pro and wanted to share my experience as to how these fit and if any modifications or trimming are needed. I hope this information is helpful to others upgrading tire sizes on their 5th generation 4Runners.
My 4Runner is not lifted so it is straight stock, however, do know that the TRD Pro's do come with a factory lift of 1.25" inches in front compared to all other 4Runners which have no lift in stock configurations.
Sorry that there is no photography content in this one, but I wanted to share information for others who would want to upgrade their adventure vehicle.

Just wanted to add a comment regarding rubbing with these oversized tires on the TRD Pro 4Runner - After driving with these tires for a few weeks now I have noticed a slight rub in the case where I'm doing a slow speed sharp turn while braking. It is quite minimal and not something I feel like needs to be addressed so I will not make any adjustments. I'm pretty certain the rub is on the mud flap. I've been off-road through some pretty rough terrain recently and didn't notice any rub so I think this will be a rare case to get any rubbing at all. Ok, just wanted to update you all on the status of these tires on my 4Runner.
I have the same tires on my 4runner, have had a small steering wheel vibration since they have been installed. Rotated and rebalanced and no change. Have you had any issues? Thanks
@@whitecx3833 I get a very slight shimmy feeling in the steering wheel at around 54mph, but as soon as I'm going faster or slower it is smooth as silk. I have heard from others that 4Runners with bigger tires sometimes have this issue and interestingly even my Toyota dealer mentioned they have a tough time getting balance perfect on certain brand tires and recommended Falken as one of the better ones for this.
@RobHuntOutside thanks for the reply
@@whitecx3833 One other little thing I should mention: I have noticed that tire pressure seems to make a difference on this for me. I notice that when I run my tire pressure a little higher it seems to reduce this effect to practically nil - I'm talking like 34 -35 psi cold. Right now I'm running a little low (32psi) and I notice it more. Probably wouldn't hurt to experiment with this a little and see if there is any difference for you. Intuitively this doesn't make much sense, but somehow it seems to matter a bit on mine.
@RobHuntOutside Funny you should mention that, I have noticed the same thing. On hot days it seemed better so I also went to 35 and then 37. 37 didn't see any difference so I'm back to 35. Might try and get them road force balanced next over the standard spin balance
You did good getting rid of the nitto tires.
I have 275 x 17 KO3’s with a 3” lift, the best thing to this size is the 275 ‘s
spare fits up the spare tire carriage.
Yep, I also have a 275 in the spare tire carriage and it fits ok.
Love the color of your 4Runner.
Thanks! I really like it too.
Great vid. I have the Wildpeak At/3 LT 265’s on my Pro and they are going strong after 40K miles. Look brand new. Think I’ll be going 275’s though soon as my current ones wear out!
I'm definitely liking the AT4's - Falken does a good job!
Your video sealed my decision to go 275 Wildpeaks. Thank you!!!
@@philippluklas Awesome! I’m still very happy I went with them.
I plan on getting that same size tire on my SR5 4Runner, I had ko2s on my third gen. Tacoma, which had the Beilstein 6112 coil overs and the 5100s in the rear with the 2 inch old man emu Leef Springs and 275s had all the room in the world.
I was considering the sane tires for my 2017 TRD PRO, I think I’ll stick with 265.
I plan on getting that same size tire on my SR5 4Runner, I had ko2s on my third gen. Tacoma, which had the Beilstein 6112 coil overs and the 5100s in the rear with the 2 inch old man emu Leef Springs and 275s had all the room in the world. I would imagine with a little more lift in front along with a set of adjustable UCAs for more camber or caster you would be able to leave the front mud flaps alone.
Agree 100%. I’m planning to leave mine on for now. The rub I’m getting is tolerable - only happens on occasion.
Currently I have a 2" front lift with Bilstein 5100 , OEM medium and OEM UCAs, 1" OEM spring Medium with 5100 as well. Have Falken Wildpeak AT3 275/70/17 on 701 Method wheels and they are driving me nuts, the rub really bad on full lock. At this point I'm debating between go back to 265 and or change wheels for TRD which are 7" wide with 5+ offset , If I'm not mistaken ... Be careful when going sides up on tires, make sure you have the right wheels width and offset. They drive and look great thought ...
Curious as to where your rubbing is happening? Is it the mudflaps? Most people remove those, although I have not, but this is where my slight rub is coming from. Might try that if you haven't already before making a big change.
i just added the ko3 285/70/17. Had to trim .5in lower front fender. didnt bother the mud flaps !
Nice!!
Oh that’s funny you point it out later! 😃
I really like the AT4, but the weight is a big factor and why I passed on them. 255/75r17 is same 32.1 size and weighs about 13 lbs less per tire.
Yep, they are pretty heavy. So far I'd say this is the biggest drawback for these AT4's, but at the same time you kinda want this if you are doing some serious off-roading. As always, compromises must be made!
Helpful video. I’m rubbing a little bit on my trd off road with these same size tires. I’m on stock wheels no lift
Thanks for the comment! Are you getting rub on the mud flaps or on the front of fender?
Stock Trd off road wheels?
I think the pros are 1" higher than other trims.
@@JohnWon-l4n Yes, the TRD Pro's are 1.25" inches lifted in the front compared to all other 5th gen 4Runner trims. Helps a bit with these bigger tires.
Thank you for the video, it’s quite informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Have you considered 5100 Bilstein's on the front? That's what I'm planning on doing to raise the front a couple inches to stop any rub. Should stop that front dip in hard breaking as well.
@@markharrison6656 I’m planning to stick with the stock TRD Pro Fox’s for now. I definitely think your strategy will work well (and will look good too). When you get it done, pop a comment in here to let me know how it works out.
Looks like a little painted front fender material removed at the 1:10 mark. Also under dynamic conditions off road will they not rub? Looks great!
Maybe add a 6” lift and it’ll definitely clear 😊
It definitely looks to me like Toyota actually does do some trimming of these TRD Pro 4Runners. I need to check and see if this trim area is present on other non-TRDPro 4Runners. Also, they may very well rub when off road because it is certainly close - I'll soon find out!
Yep, that would do it!
can you tell us all the mods you made to this? I love the look
No mods at all except the new Falken 275/70r17 tires. Just as an FYI, the stock TRD Pro is lifted in the front about 1.25" as compared to all of the other 4Runner models which gives it a nice look in my opinion.
Beautiful truck did you need a alignment after the install
Not sure I needed it but did it anyway to avoid any potential shimmy problems.
Hi Rob, can you share how is your mpg, performance and onroad handling changed sizing up?
MPG performance has dropped off 1 to 1.5 MPG I'd say. It's a bit tough to gauge exactly the difference but it seems like around that. From an on-road handling perspective I have not noticed any real negatives or drop-off. It's been a few months now and overall I'm still quite happy with the change - no regrets.
Beautiful truck. Did you change your spare to 275/70 as well? If so, did it fit underneath the car?
Yes, I changed the spare to a 275/70r17 too and yes it did fit underneath in the normal spare tire space. This did reduce some ground clearance though given the wider/bigger spare.
Hows are they on the freeway? Great video btw!
Thanks!! I'm pretty happy with them on the freeway. I'm surprised that they are as quiet as they are given the aggressive tread pattern. At this point, I have no regrets buying these AT4's - they seem to perform well in all situations. If there is one drawback, it would be the weight, but if you want a tire that performs well off-road and will be durable it probably is going to be a bit heavy.
@@RobHuntOutside you are right, the weight is what holding me back. Are you losing 1-2 mpg due to the weight? Also, i assume you dont have any rubbing problem?
@@kevintran9411 I had the same concern about the weight, but decided to go ahead because I really liked these tires in every other way. As for the mpg's, it's hard to say exactly but I'd guess I'm losing around 1mpg or maybe a shade more than that but certainly not 2mpg. The only rubbing I've noticed is when I'm doing a hard turn under braking. It's not much and so far I've seen no reason to remove the mud flaps to address this slight rub.
@@RobHuntOutside thanks for the honest review. I assume the reason you got a little rub is because you went with the 275. I assume the 265 should have no rub?
@@kevintran9411 I would assume the 265's would not rub since that is the stock size on the 5th gen 4runners.
Nice suv but why did you go with LT instead of just the 65000 mile falken wildpeak AT4W? I had same tires on my gmc Sierra AT4 but I switched them to the non LT
In the 275/70r17 size, only LT's are available so only one choice. If you want a load range C or E, you have to get LT's (I wanted load range C). Also, the LT's give you more tread depth compared to the non-LT's. I'm not sure why the non LT's are 60,000 mile warranty as opposed to 65,000 - it seems they should be the same or better with more tread depth.
@@RobHuntOutside ok good to know, I saw a big change in gas mileage with the LTs as they are heavier and thicker tread than my pizza cutter stock OEM tires 😹
How are you liking the ride experience???
They ride great. Seem to perform quite well in all situations and they ride pretty quiet on the highway given the aggressive tread pattern. I've been impressed so far.
Hey. Wanting to do this with my TRD Pro. How’s the driving on the highway?
These tires on the highway are great and even the road noise is quite good - I have to say I'm quite impressed with these Falken's. I have experienced a little bit of rub though when turning sharply under braking, but it is rare and not a big deal.
looks good for the mall, but will it flex offroad and not raise all kinds of hell?
All good offroad - I can hear a little rub every now and then, but pretty minor and certainly not an issue. And looks good for the mall too!
Bought a set a month ago for my 2011 F150 FX4. I'm disappointed in the highway driving performac. The tires require a lot of driver attention to keep the truck on track compared to the Bridgestone Dueller Revos I had on it previously. I have to make small adjustments as if the steering is loose. I've had the car aligned by the top independent alignment shop in the area and the suspension checked, so this is not the issue. Has anyone else experienced this with these tires?
I haven’t experienced this on my 4Runner. Could be a defective tire? On my 4Runner, these Falken’s seem to track better than the stock Nitto’s they replaced.
@@RobHuntOutside thanks for the feedback. I like the tires except for this issue so I am hoping there is a fix.
@@RobHuntOutside A question - for on-road use, do you inflate your tires to the spec on the door panel or higher? When I inflate to the f150 spec (35 psi) the tires appear slightly deflated. The Falkens show max psi of 50 so I have so room to work with.
When I got them installed, they inflated to 34psi cold and I’ve just gone with that. The spec on my door is 32. At 34, I haven’t noticed them looking deflated.
UPDATE: I finally gave up on the Falken AT4Ws after 3 alignments, a balance, and a rotation. Falken provided a concession and exchanged for a Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo 3 set ( I previously had Revo 2s). Exponentially better performance on the road. The new tires feel stable and firm without being rough. I'm impressed by Falken's customer service, but unfortunately, they need to work out some kinks with the Wildpeak AT4Ws. Thanks for everyone's input and thoughts.
No wheel spacers or front lift? I don’t believe you said in the video
Nope, straight stock TRD Pro with no spacers or lift. But do be aware that the TRD Pro’s come stock with ~1.25 inch lift in front as compared to all the other 4Runner models.
it looks you did trim your front fender
@@pinnacleprotectionsolution5634 As I mentioned in the video, rumor has it that Toyota actually does a little trimming on the TRD Pro’s. You can clearly see this in the video. I didn’t do this myself.
How do the load range C tires ride? Are they strong enough to air down when off roading?
The load range C's ride great - I've been impressed with how they feel. No worries for airing them down - they do fine.
Have you noticed a big hit to MPG and have you been able to off-road these tires yet to confirm no rubbing? I’ve been debating between this size and 255/80 R17 which is a true 33 and I hear it doesn’t rub either. Just not a fan of load E’s.
Yes I am seeing slightly lower MPG's - less than 1 MPG though so not too bad. Also, yes, I did get them out off-roading and can confirm no rubbing.
That’s better than I’d expect given the weight difference. How about loss in power? It’s already pretty sluggish.
Truthfully I was expecting it to feel much more sluggish than it does. I can definitely feel a little difference, but not terrible. This is part of the reason I went with 275's as opposed to 285's - I think the 285's might be more sluggish than I would want. Always tradeoffs!
@@RobHuntOutside you see a bigger MPG hit after a 2" lift, that 1 will become 3, and combined with the slight sluggish feel the difference is huge.
Does it rub when you go off road?
Not too much. I’ve noticed it a couple times, but generally don’t hear it much.
Im getting these exact tires and i was wondering what tire pressure your running?
On road 34lbs. Off-road I drop to around 20lbs.
Thankyou nice ride man👌
How’s the road noise ?
Quieter than I expected actually given the beefy tread. So I’d say not too bad.
What psi are you running for everyday use?
So far I’ve been running 34psi cold for everyday driving. I usually drop to around 20psi off road.
just leveled mine, 2.5 inches in the front.. hopefully they shouldn't rub with the same size, 275 70 17..
Nice!
With 2.5" front lift you will not rub. But you will see a bigger mpg hit.
I have 2.5" front lift, 1.5" rear on my 23 ORP on New Copper 255/75r17 road & trail and it's a very nice look and much less hit to the mpg's. The ride is much smoother and quieter than the stock NITTO's I had. Traction both on and off road is also better.
Isn’t that gonna rub if you take it off-road?
I’ve had it off road quite a lot and haven’t noted any rubbing in those scenarios.
Did it change the mpg
Yes, the mpg's are definitely a bit worse. I'd say I'm losing around 1mpg on average with the bigger tires.
Did it effect the mpg

Looks to me like there is some trim taken off the front fender already?
Rumor has it that Toyota does this trim on all TRD Pro’s.
