    I like the way you and anyone should think when you acquire or keep a vehicle. This vehicle will always have solid resale vs something else but it is rare air for anyone to make money cherry picking a purchase and holding and maintaining it over 10, 20, 30 years and making a real net return. The best proposition is if someone has $50k cash sitting around you’re better off most say investing that money. Those returns over the same periods are much better than any car. No matter how good or rare.

      Don’t wait and do the 10K oil change. The first couple of oil changes with a new vehicle are the most important. I typically change my new vehicles oil at 500 miles. Then another one at 2,000 miles and a third at 5,000 miles. Then I do oil changes every 5,000 miles from that point on.

    The biggest difference on what the values will be between the fj and the 4runner is production numbers. There were only around 200k fjs produced for the US market from 06-14 and there are well over a million 4Runners. Just like everything else supply and demand dictates values.

    I watched several 4Runner videos from the Car Care Nut and Automotive Press before choosing my first 24 Limited 4wd. The only question that will be answered in time is that the 22-24 models increased substantially due to inflation. I suspect that the values on these will drop to align more with the 19-21 model values. While we don’t buy cars as investments, it’s plausible to assume that these will depreciate more.

    I sold my 2016 4runner sr5 premium about 2 months ago for $25k. It had 65k miles on it and it was in fair condition, some scratches and a dent, interior was pretty rough due to my 3 dogs walking all over everything. I then bought a 2024 4runner limited in the underground color and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I am going above and beyond to take care of this one and am hoping that in 5 years it is still in close to perfect condition and will be worth the original msrp of $53k or more. Especially if inflation continues and the price of a new 4runner that no one wants is 60 something k for similar trim level.

    I bought my wife a new 4runner (pro - lime rush) a couple of years ago. It was her first non mom car in over 20 years. She loves it - she only has 23K miles on it and it is such a solid vehicle. She is thinking about getting a new vehicle but we will probably keep it.
    I have had several Tacomas - bought a 23 Tacoma (Pro - solar octane) only because I was afraid of the turbo. I put 250k on my 19 Tacoma and it was flawless. As much as I like the Tacomas, the 4runner is in a different league.
    ** I just bought an 06 4Runner (V8) with only 84K miles...one owner 4x4 Sport. I paid 16K , put on a timing belt, water pump, plugs wires, etc...sold out to my daughter for 10K...it should last her for many, many years.

    I just bought a 2024 ORP in Underground, loving it so far and will be keeping it for a long time.
    I definitely agree with you, the 2024 4Runner is the last of the old Toyota (the Toyota everyone loved). It’s the end of an era and it’s the last chance to get a new version. The Gen 5 has been perfected for 15 years, it’s the culmination of slight improvements year after year. The demand for them will definitely go up as soon as Toyota releases the new MSRP for the 2025s, expect $50k base and going up to possibly $75-$80k for the TRD Pro.
    You also have to factor in inflation, money today is not worth as much as it used to be. A $30k 4Runner 5-10 years ago is now a $50-$60k 4Runner. It’s just going to continue to get more expensive, might as well lock one down now while you still can. The longer you have your 4Runner the higher the possibilty that you’d be able to sell it for exactly what you paid for it (or more). Like the FJs you mentioned, $30k new, fast forward 10 years and you can sell it for $30k+ and essentially have had a free truck to use for 10 years (minus any potential interest/dividends/growth you would have made if you had just parked that $30k in the market).
    When I was shopping for a 4Runner I went to at least 12 different dealerships. They all had a few things in common: 1) The last remaining 2024 4Runners were flying off the lots. They couldn’t even keep them on the lots (unless there was a dealer mark up on them). Most of the 4Runners, mine included, didn’t even sit for a day on the lot. I had reserved mine, it got delivered in the morning, went through pre-inspection, and then I drove it home in the afternoon. 2). The dealerships had only a few more allocations of 4Runners coming for the entire rest of the year. I had an internet manager send me their entire allocation sheet for the rest of 2024, there were about 6 more 4Runners coming… that’s it. I’m pretty sure it’s like that everywhere. As production is likely only manufacturing the last of the 2024s what’s left on lots is all there is. 3). The dealerships I went to all complained about low inventory. Word from Toyota to dealerships was to expect little to no inventory for awhile, slow allocations across the board. One Dealship I was at didn’t even have a Camry or Corolla on the entire lot. 4). Despite having almost no inventory, they all had literally dozens and dozens of 2024 Tacomas and Tundras. One dealership had two 4Runners and 27 Tacomas. The sales rep there said they couldn’t move the Tacomas, no one wanted them! 😂.

    I dont doubt that prices will go up with the 5th gen 4Runner and 3rd gen Tacoma. The new ones while they look good are flawed. Suspension issues, 4 cylinder turbo engine that needs lots of field hours to see how reliable is. I got no doubts on the hybrid system as Toyota has been doing it for years, but there is no doubt they cut corners in other specs of the new gens. The dealer had a dozen or so in transit and all of them already ha deposits on except the one I placed a deposit on. I think it's a testament to these vehicles as most people would wait for the new model and the outgoing would be sitting on the lots, but not the case with these. I’m waiting at least 5-6 years before even considering a 6th gen. I am extremely relieved that they are still manufacturing them at the same plant in Japan. I don’t think Japan will allow their bread and butter baby to drop in quality even with all of the newer technology. I have a 2015 TRD Pro that I will never sell even if i need to replace the entire powertrain which I will do if the time comes. I think the Japanese will find a way to make this new 6th gen last as long or maybe longer than the 5th gen. The quality difference from the Tacoma to the 4Runner is astronomical even with the 3rd and 5th gens respectively. I think that same quality with the 6th gen will continue. I have very limited time in a 4th gen and never owned one. The one I was in was a rental and was very nice! But never took it offroad or anything just around town and the the airport.

    Hi Jason, great review. I've been researching the 4Runner and I see A LOT of them are from rental companies. What are your thoughts on rental purchases?

    • @Jason-Samko
      @Jason-Samko  8 днів тому +1

      I won't buy a rental vehicle if I can avoid it. Heard so many horror stories. But the 4 runner is one vehicle that is built to take the abuse and is probably still fine. But the idea of 700 other people driving it hard and the bare minimum maintenance done does worry me a bit.But. and the resale value will drop tremendously if the car fax shows it was a rental vehicle

    • @Jason-Samko
      @Jason-Samko  20 днів тому +1

      now its just a high end luxury trim level

    • @willdembik688
      @willdembik688 20 днів тому

      Leather instead of sof-tex material. Heated and ventilated front seats, xreas suspension (some dislike but easily replaceable), only trim level with full-time 4wd, similar to the GX (60/40), and still has low range and atrac, and also has a usable, optional 3rd row. I wanted the ORP, however when I weighed the options, I use and enjoy the functions of limited more on a daily basis then I ever would be using crawl control, locking rear diff, etc. AND IT STILL PERFORMS FLAWLESSY OFF ROAD for when I need it to.

  • @Nonomcmlxxxi

    4Runner to Tacoma comparison is fair. 4Runner to FJ cruiser is ludicrous. The FJ was completely removed from the line-up which in turn made the FJ followers a cult following regardless of capability. Unless the 4Runner production stops all together, 4Runners of any gen will likely never reach FJ valuation.

    • @Jason-Samko
      @Jason-Samko  2 дні тому

      But when the fj died toyota still had a bomb proof offroad capable suv, the 4 runner. Now toyota does not offer a bomb proof simple suv any more. If you want a quality built last forever good off road suv from toyota a used 4 runner is your only option. That situation was not there when the fj died.

    • @Nonomcmlxxxi
      @Nonomcmlxxxi 2 дні тому

      Ok, I buy some of that but not completely. There will be a divergence of fans that still want the capability you mention that the 5th gen brings, however the name alone will drag a lot of folks to buy new vehicle. Btw, I’m hoping that your scenario happens and my TRD Pro doubles in 5 - 10 years but I won’t hold my breath. Good news is the 5th gen will absolutely hold up while we wait and see. Thanks for the healthy discussion!

    Turbo charged are not very reliable. Those ball bearings will need to be replace at a certain miles. If they're not taken care of those metal peices from a turbo can grenade the engine.

  • @pireina1
    @pireina1 24 дні тому

    Soon the world will be decided into 2 classes, Non Turbo and Turbo engines. Reliability against limited reliability The non turbos will be very desirable as things get more and more expensive. Reliability again will be more important than gadgets once people realize it and get out of their own butts.

    • @Jason-Samko
      @Jason-Samko  24 дні тому

      Depends. Me and many people don't keep a truck past a few years or 75k miles. So for us it doesn't matter if turbo or not. I won't own a truck with out an extended warranty and sell it before 80k. Usually I hit 80k miles in 24-28 months.

    • @pireina1
      @pireina1 24 дні тому

      Of course, but looks like things are getting more expensive as time passes. Toyotas were designed to last, until they realized that people don’t buy cars to keep for long periods. And there are a lot of people that don’t swap vehicles either.
      How long do most people enjoy or use or stay inside their vehicles? They are meant to take you from point a to point B , not to have an expensive stereo, super comfortable seats that massages etc, etc. we don’t need half of the stuff they put in there.
      It is pretty much a state of mind. If we think about it and get real, we could be saving many $$$$ in things we don’t need.
