This is an edited version of the song. If you get the opportunity have a look at Luther singing his full version of Superstar 'Live at Wembley' from 1989, it's on UA-cam. I was at the concert, and his performance was spellbinding, not just his own vocals but also the interaction with his amazing backing singers ❤🇬🇧

A super reaction reaction 🦸🏾‍♂⭐! I believe this performance is from 19th NAACP Image Awards Performance in 1987. You reacted to the Carpenters version of this song before. This song is about music industry groupies. I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to Luther Vandross before: A House Is Not A Home- Live, Here And Now, Endless Love- Live, The Christmas Song and Never Too Much. Superstar was released as the third single from Luther Vandross' 1983 album: Busy Body. It was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. It was produced by Luther Vandross and Larkin Arnold. The song reached #5 on the R&B chart and #87 on the Hot 100.
Rita Coolidge came up with the song idea, based on observing the relationships of female groupies with rock stars in the late 1960s. In its first recorded incarnation, the song was called "Groupie (Superstar)", and was released in December 1969 as the B-side of the Delaney & Bonnie single: "Comin' Home". Released by Atco Records in the United States and Atlantic Records in the rest of the world, the full credit on the single was "Delaney & Bonnie and Friends featuring Eric Clapton". "Comin' Home" reached number 84 on the US pop singles chart, although it achieved a peak of sixteen on the UK Singles Chart.
Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett wrote this song, which is about a woman who falls for a Rock star, has a tryst with him, but then in a bout of delusion awaits his return, apparently falling for it when he said he loved her. The word "Groupie" was just entering the lexicon when they wrote this song in 1969. Rolling Stone popularized it when they titled the cover story of their February 15, 1969 issue "The Groupies And Other Girls." Groupies were often romanticized and admired for their style and fashion, but they were also at times denigrated as rock star playthings with a loose grip on reality, which is how they are portrayed in this song.
The original version of the song: "Superstar", finally surfaced in 1972, when the album: D&B Together, was released, shortly before Delaney & Bonnie's marriage and collaboration ended. That version was also included as a bonus track on a 2006 reissue of the 1970 album: Eric Clapton. Bonnie Bramlett later rerecorded the song on her 2002 solo album: I'm Still the Same. Using just the title: "Superstar", she rendered it as a very slow, piano-based torch song.
In the early 1980s, Luther Vandross had the song: "Superstar", in his stage act, sometimes in a rendition that stretched to 12 minutes, with vocal interpolations and an interpretive dancer. Luther Vandross then recorded "Superstar" in 1983 in a slower, more Soulful fashion, as part of a medley with Stevie Wonder's song: "Until You Come Back To Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)", on his 1983 album: Busy Body.
    Lyrics 🗒:
    I wanna tell you babe...
The things that I have been going through
    Missing you
    Missing you ...oh oh
Until you come back to me
I don't know what I am gonna do
    Oh no no no no...
Don't you remember you told me you love me babe...
You said you'll be coming back this way again...
Babe babe babe babe oh babe yeah
    I love you
    I really do...
    Long ago
    And so far away
I fell In love with you
    Before the second show
    And your guitar
And you sound so sweet and clear
    But your not really here
    It's the radio
Don't you remember you told me you love me babe...
You said you'll be coming back this way again...
Babe babe babe babe oh babe yeah
    I love you
    I really do...
    To be yours
    Hey hey hey hey
    To be yours
Oh oh oh oh yeah yeah yeah yeah
You look for me to be yours
    To be
    But you're on my mind
    But you're on the road
    Don't you remember me anymore...
Don't you know me, don't you know me...
    And Loneliness
    Is such affair
    Sad sad sad affair
    And I can't hardly wait
    To be with you again
    And what to say
    To say
    To make you come again
    Oh oh honey
Come on back to me again (yeah)
    I wanna be
    I wanna be
    Anywhere you are...
Don't you remember you told me you love me babe...
You said you'll be coming back this way again...
Babe babe babe babe oh babe yeah
    I love you
    I really do...
Yeah yeah yeah yeah oh oh oh
    Take it easy
    Take it easy
    Keep it right there
Keep it right there..keep it right
    Yeah yeah yeah yeah
What are you going to say
    It's alright
    It's alright
And oh babe it's alright its alright
    Alright now
    Alright now yeah yeah
    I used to be sad
But now it's alright its alright
And Oh babe it's alright ...alright now
    Alright now (fade)

His sisters, Patricia Vandross and Ann Vandross, began taking Luther Vandross to the Apollo Theater and to a theater in Brooklyn to see Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin. Patricia Vandross sang with the vocal group: The Crests, and was featured on the songs "My Juanita" and "Sweetest One".
