In 1984, my wife and I were barely married 15 months when I was sent to Turkey (USAF) for one year. I was so heartbroken to be away from the love of my life that I would sit in my dorm room and listen to this song often (vinyl) and miss my wife to no end. Oh that's too bad . I have seen Luther Vandross live in Germany in 1987 and 1993. I didn't know Luther Vandross until 1987, when an acquaintance of mine took me to this concert. I was frozen like a pillar of salt and the music opened my soul. I stood 2 meters away from the stage and all around me only American soldiers who were close to tears. From that concert on, I bought all his records and remain faithful to the music of Luther Vandross to this day. It's a pity that you could never see him live, I would have liked to see him live. The sound engineer and the musicians are also overlooked in this, but they are a huge part of making this what it is!! Big kudos to them!! Simply superb!!
Seriously? Luther's voice was a whole instrument unto itself, no inner ear, no tracks, no nothing, he spent nearly 20 years singing backing for EVERYBODY WHO WAS ANYBODY, he was in complete demand, the engineer running the board barely had to do anything but level the instruments, Luther's voice was a once in a lifetime gift from God, fun fact* he sang backing on David Bowie's Young American's from the album of the same...he was a true artist, perfect pitch❤I'm sad he spent his entire career in the closet, really sad😢

It takes me back to a time when love was abundant, a time so vivid with warmth and connection. It’s a bittersweet feeling because today, it feels harder to find that kind of unconditional love. why singers dont have this dignity on the stage anymore? what a class, what a nice guy, what a beautiful black man and r&b singer, what a talent! so humble....so nice! this man was one of a kind! his talent was a gift to mankind! bless him, bless teddy, bless barry, bless marvin and so many others that dignified this craft! shame what we have today!

One of the most iconic singers of all times... the music industry have yet to recover from his loss. RIP Luther Vandross gone but will never be forgotten!!
Will NEVER be another EVER. Not one singer today could even a hold a candle to him. You know your bad when you your backup singers can SING. Having Lisa Fischer as one was BRILLIANT.
Lisa Fischer is the TRUTH!!!❤️🔥🎶❤️🔥🎶❤️🔥🎶🎶❤️🔥 I remember her saying she WANTED to STAY in the background. ImmSO GRATEFUL she did a SOLO ALBUM for the world to ADORE!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰 I LOVE singing "How Can I Ease the Pain", and recognizing her!! OMG!!!
he literally opened his mouth and it was like... the skies parted, it seemed almost effortless. the most magnificent singer i have ever had the pleasure of seeing perform. absolutely brilliant!
Many have tried to imitate but none compare. He absolutely commanded the stage. He was said to be a perfectionist and difficult to work with. But he never compromised his craft.🎶🎤🎶 Sang Luther!!!!
What an honor and a privilege to be there. He was one of my favorite love ballads singers in the 80's. I had three beautiful babies listening to Luther Vandross. One daughter and two sons who are grown folks today giving me grandchildren. We can never get tired of listening to our favorite musicians. He's legend who we love and appreciate. 🌸🌸🌹🌸🌸
I was there too and to this day I can feel every note of every song reverb thru my heart and soul , I miss this man so much , his songs taught me how to love a woman! Thank you Luther, you will always be my brother from another mother and a friend in soul and spirit , may you rest in peace and thank you for the joy your voice gave me and all your millions of fans!
Sublime. This isn't just singing, this is the art of storytelling. This performance hits you somewhere deeper because it came from somewhere deeper. Plus, everything - Luther, backing singers, band and sound guys...were ON POINT for this show! 👌 10/10
I absolutely agree I was at this concert the sound just went all around the arena when the backing singers kicked it gives me goosebumps every time incredible
Hello Leon :-). Are you still listening to Luther as I am? I am in my late sixties and as long as I have breath I will never stop listening to his music. Keep On Keepin On and God bless you. From Chicago
What he is doing here is very difficult (to make 13min out of a 5min song) especially in live in such a big stage! Bravo to the musicians too who are following the improvisation flawlessly, amazing!
Something that most people aren't seeing... this is a combination of talent. Luther, the background singers and the musical arrangement of Nat Adderly Jr. This man deserves so much credit. His music gave wind to Luther's wings. If you have ever heard him play, it was as if he could bring Luther back to the stage from the dead. Keep playing Nat. The world needs REAL music, not fabrication. Luther, is now singing with the angels and from what i have learned, everything is better in heaven so his voice is light year's more than it was. And make no doubt...it was nothing short of magnificent.
I was working for the studio where Luther & Co were rehearsing for this tour. They had so much fun together. I got to laugh with them for a bit, and never doubted that Luther was truly loved. Lisa was very nice, and all the fun and loving with Luther I got to see will always be a wonderful memory from those days.
I had the pleasure of being part of the opening act for this incredibly talented & wonderful human being on the NY Spirit Cruises in the early 90's. To this date in time, he remains, so alive & full of life in my heart & soul! Such a man's man with a voice that transcends time and stands alone beyond peers, coupled with a persona that is so genuine, so great as to aspire so many professionally! There are very few who can stand near little less close to the reality of Luther but "we" must reach for the essence despite the hurdle being so high! I miss you and genuinely thank you for being the wonderful human being, artist, friend and mentor that you are to me and so many. Thank you! I miss you and every thought you shared. Thank you for your insight, encouragement, love and passion as I remain eternally in your appreciation, Your friend, Geo Horton!
Luther took the Carpenter's hit and hit a home run with all the bases loaded. He was born to sing love songs. The world is missing good love ballads and Luther's contributed to a catalog of exceptional love songs. He sang out of the pain he experienced in his life and the message came through loud and clear. Rest is peace Luther Vandross; your music lives on in our hearts. ❤❤❤
I remember back in 1984, I saw Luther perform, I bought the ticket from a Chicago broker whose seats were not beyond the third row. Me and my friends had a ball. I think that was the best concert, I ever attended.
When we went to see him in person, No words can describe the show. Until this day i still can't put it in words. We used to sit on the floor and Play this DVD over and over. People say there never be another this that and the other. There will never be another Luther Vandross
Because that's where he started out as, he was one of the most sought out backup singer before he went solo, he sung backup for David Bowie to Aretha franklin, he understood that background is vital and adds on so much to the song
I was at this show, watching Luther Vandross live at Madison Square Garden. it was amazing then to hear and it's amazing now to see him God bless your Bless your soul. Luther Vandross.
@@bobbyanderson8647 Luther wouldn't have it any other way. Luther is the only artist I know who could sing a song better than he recorded it. No other artist has ever come close.
I don't care how hard of gangsta you are, this song will bring you to tears. Because we all have that ONE that got away. Luther is representing for the brothers like me.
I tried to put my one that got away--AWAY for good. Cheating bastard. LOL! But I get what you're saying, sir. God finally got me right with the man he made for me. I sent the one that got away a wedding invitation because there are no hard feelings. :) The one that got away and I were never meant to be because I was made to love my husband of 22 years this 12/29/22. But I get what you mean. I would be writing this from prison if I had not got away. Good night.
Damn, you know it is something when you and your background singers can SANG. I have seen this whole performance back in the day on vhs and this has to be one of the meanest r&b concerts hand down. This song is pure love and his voice just dances across it.
I still have the DVD to this concert in my possession in perfect condition. I only pull it out when I reflect on my life and times with family and friends I have lost 😢 because all of them had their favorite song on it. Love them forever
What alot of people didn't know is he had SIX background singers most times. The last time I saw him, I peeped the three female singers behind middle curtain and after the show saw them again in a bar in the village. They got me and my lady drunk as hell after I told them about themselves. Good times!
It's 2024 and Luther's legacy is still flowing as smooth as ever!

Scott McGillivray AMEN TO THAT!♥️

How this song didn't win any awards is beyond me.😮
Haters that is why
Because it's just a cover.

why singers dont have this dignity on the stage anymore? what a class, what a nice guy, what a beautiful black man and r&b singer, what a talent! so humble....so nice!

his talent was a gift to mankind!

I love all of the comments in here. They pick apart all of my emotions. Wonderful
You are so right the industry go for the most outrageous today remember what you had to be to President United States no more. You can be divorced baby Moma ETC 2019... Generation × is the last to see and be apart of a class act.
Will Downing is the closest one that I've seen that match his dignity. He's a class act; he and his band and are the nicest people off stage.

How lucky to see him live! Great memories to look back on 😊
My moma & friends went to see his show in 91! Sadly, my mom is no longer here with us but I bought here this VHS in 90.

Sublime. This isn't just singing, this is the art of storytelling. This performance hits you somewhere deeper because it came from somewhere deeper. Plus, everything - Luther, backing singers, band and sound guys...were ON POINT for this show! 👌 10/10

You and me both. We all miss him so much. RIP Luther.
My first concert. This man & Whitney Houston sung from their hair roots to their toenails! The BEST GO FIRST.❤💜
What he is doing here is very difficult (to make 13min out of a 5min song) especially in live in such a big stage! Bravo to the musicians too who are following the improvisation flawlessly, amazing!
I will treasure this vocal artist forever. Brings love to another level.
It's called "Baby baby baby and ooohoooho it's alright i's alright ooh baby..alright....pretty sure there is Luther Vandross interpreted....lol
I was introduced in '84... Amazed every time. ...I was 11yrs old
NOT DIFFICULT FOR LUTHER😋 Doon Doon Doon Doon.....,😎
The musicians were on point!
Thank you for the memory 😊
So true hats off to Nat, a very talented man. Luther and him pure magic. Miss Luther so much.
thanks for this insight!
You must be a real musician you know about Nat addley jr
Thank you for your insight, encouragement, love and passion as I remain eternally in your appreciation,
Your friend,

Ashley Leazer Girl, I cried and rock all while he sang this song. I got a chance to him sing it in Chicago
Meet too. I hollered.

Simply the greatest voice to ever grace this planet. Undeniable, irreplaceable genius. Rest in peace my brother.
I love how he looked at his background singers and talked to them and showed them love and attention cuz they killed it the whole show
Backup sounded like angels.
Because that's where he started out as, he was one of the most sought out backup singer before he went solo, he sung backup for David Bowie to Aretha franklin, he understood that background is vital and adds on so much to the song
