True Stories was dyn-o-mite. Nobody got it when it came out. Nobody. Byrne is a flippin genius. He may not be the greatest artist to work with on a project (like Peter Gabriel), but they are both musical and lyrical geniuses. I think I was one of the only people in my high school who dug Talking Heads. My friends who I grew up with (and who are now in our late 50's) still don't get why I'm such a fan.
They are a brilliant band and were so ahead of the times. They remain one of my favourite bands and after all these years of listening to them i seam to appreciate them more and more as time moves on. Did you also listen to the Tom Tom Club, again they were ahead of their time.
The best Talking Heads song ever is ? Whatever you think it is Just something I believe in when people try comparing Whos the best at literally everything
Scroll through your social media feeds while this song is playing, on another tab. The effect is the EXACT same thing as this video. Talking Heads are LIGHT YEARS ahead of us all.
@Billy Batts jam and jelly are two different things. Jelly is made from just the juice, jam is made from the cooked fruit. Both are considered preserves.
This might be my new most favorite song and video ever... I was stuck on "Road To Nowhere" for a while, not even having listened to this album or seen the film... I'll be 40 in a couple of months... my parents used to play some TH stuff growing up, but never deeper cuts, always the same hand full of "Top 40" hits.... I now feel like I've been robbed of this audio and visual experience for a large chunk of my life now.... this album lives on repeat for now....
I swear I know exactly what You mean! I have been "rediscovering" them in a much deeper way lately...like obsessed. I remember listening to them as a kid and then being the first band that I really connected with. Now I'm listening to their deep cuts on repeat... And being crazy over "Air" and "Artists Only" especially the live versions... And don't even get me started on Houses in Motion... Hahha
Saw this video once when it came out. Completely forgot about it until a few weeks back when I saw True Stories and there it was. Great song, loved the movie, thanks!
Masterful video, wonderfully done, loaded with obvious images of crass commercialism - and a killer song that's instantly likeable - and yet it is still just a silly love song - as all the best songs mostly are! For the opposite sentiment, go see Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" - another song of pure genius - just as crass as this one, and yet darker in tone. Love them both!
Talking Heads don't just consume African rhythms, they are inspired by them and take them in as part of themselves. Love this video so much. It makes me want to make music too.
It's actually more of a celebration. If you've watched the movie (which I highly recommend doing if you haven't), the whole film is about the beauty in everything, from warehouses to advertisements!
by the 1980s advertising and branding had gotten really good. How they try to emotionally manipulate you had gotten good too. The Talking Heads recognized this quite well and mocked it in a rather innocent way here... and with a damn good song with a great beat. The rhythm section of Franz/Weymouth here is so damn tight!
This is song is prophetic and full of a doomy, gloomy outlook on our blatant consumerism. It reminds me of Devo's "Beautiful World". Seems so benign and sunny. It's not. This song is a warning. The video is PERFECT at broadcasting its true meaning to anyone wanting to understand what's really going on. On the musical side though, this song just infects my ears and I GET ADDICTED. I could play this song dozens of times per day and have over the years many, many times. That riff IS OUTMATCHED NOWHERE.

That was so rare in the 80s, the golden age of MTV. Everybody had to have A Look. Talking Heads had weirdness on their side, though. And sometimes a giant white suit 😄
The crazy thing is, their first ever show was at CBGB’s opening for the Ramones. So you had these insane punk bands then just these nerdy art students.
It's both right? I was surprised how some of these ads are just the same today, (like the whole chocolate-falling-into-waterfall-of-liquid-chocolate gimmick.)
Wow!!! It’s been a while since I’ve heard this song, it sounds amazing and fun just like it did 1986, here in 2024 so killer and fun amazing music and visuals of mass consumption and consumerism in 1986. Before our current world situation, there was music that was made by people that played instruments and not some AI. Thank you for posting this video and sharing it with me and the people who have experienced happiness.
That bass drum on this song is so massive. Love that thumping bass drum sound
Chris Frantz now age 73. Totally an underrated drummer 🥁.
💥💖 YES! 💖💥
This band was way ahead of its time. Brilliant sound and image was truly authentic
They were OF their time. I was there. I still live there (musically).
And David's imagination is why their videos are so awesome
Talking heads is slowly becoming my favorite band
After watching a bit of stop making sense and going down a bit of a rabbit hole, I agree
slowly is the wrong word usage! speed that shiz up
Try to find True Stories the movie and see John Goodman's debut to this song

Missed David Byrne and Talking Heads at their peak but a friend put me on to them and I have become a great fan. One of the greatest bands.
Its never late!!!!
I had just got into them and saw them at Merriweather for the little creatures tour
They are a brilliant band and were so ahead of the times. They remain one of my favourite bands and after all these years of listening to them i seam to appreciate them more and more as time moves on. Did you also listen to the Tom Tom Club, again they were ahead of their time.

David Byrne is an underrated genius of the music, someone who was ahead of his time.

Talking Heads are LIGHT YEARS ahead of us all.
They were the last rock band. Rock died when they broke up.
Lately what I'm scrolling through doesn't deserve this soundtrack!
Talking Heads rule forever
The year is 2245 and Talking Heads is still a must one ....
