I initially heard this song during my dance evenings at the famous “First Avenue” in Minneapolis during their famous Tuesday night dance nights. This tune immediately made us get up and dance, despite the fact we had just danced two hours straight and were taking a break. The song just compelled you to move and was unique. The DJ was great and always played the newest music from everywhere and anywhere. It was our Midwest Studio 54. Great times.🎶❤️🎶
I loved the performance of this song in Stop Making Sense (one of my favorite films). I didn't realize the "James Brown" bit was actually part of the original recording. :-)
I always love and am always thrilled by the Tom Tom Club's formula of disco/new wave/funk, and of course with their own touch on top of it all! It's not a formula or concept that could be pulled off by just anyone, but they were the ones meant to create it and successfully make it work.
Still as fabulous as ever! Was watching the Suzie Q doc and Tina Weymouth popped up and I suddenly remembered the TT Club and wanted to hear this again. I’m suddenly transported back in my childhood bedroom aged 14! x

I should not admit my past transgressions - but - I was 20 and living in Vegas when this song came out. That’s why we should have gatekept hip hop from non-black outsiders. You made an entire career from appropriating our culture and now you’re attributing another outsider to its creation? You’re a joke and you lack self-awareness. “William H Baird”, what’s wrong, daddy stopped paying your college tuition when he realized you suck at math so you had to take away what little space they let black people have to eat and feed their families? Literally the worst kind of person.
I was brought here by the memories of a childhood that was loaded with fun times; a lot of them due to music like this.
1981?!?!? WOW, that's crazy!! Man you just gotta love the 80's!!! So grateful that my teen years were in the 80's!
As a kid this was one of my mom's go-to albums to put on when she wanted to clean house to prepare for guests. I remember staring at this album art for hours. It was also how I learned about the existence of drugs and what coke was, lol whoops. Love you mama~
Dude, I don't know how or why, but this song feels so underrated yet so popular at the same time. It feels like I just discovered some extremely obscure song, but it's literally the exact opposite of obscure.
They're totally different styles, but for some reason this video always reminded me of the Schoolhouse Rock videos I watched as a kid. Super cool song, and the 80s were amazing for music.
This is proof the 80's never died they just got remixed to oblivion.
Too true my friends
hell no
@@yanikotavov385yeah, actually. 80s funky strings and synths have had a resurgence in recent years
@@Yeedo420 80s metal however - hasn't.
This is like 1981
Sounds as good today... as it ever was.
Same as it ever was 🎶
This song is new for me and I'm in love.
I agree!
That's rite!
It remains consistent
This is one of most unique and genius hits of all time. Everything about it is amazing! Sing song will be just as good in another 100 years.
Very ahead of it's time. That little synthesizer hook ties it back into the 80's, marvelously.
Back home the radio didn't give this much airplay ( it only reached #31 in April, 1982) but after hearing it on Casey Kasem's countdown I had to have it so I got a 45 from Tower Records and still have it now. It's one of those tunes that never leaves my mind.
Where did you live and what station did you listen to? Because we heard it in1981 and it peaked at Billboard 1 US Hot Dance Club Songs and 2 at US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs
@@passion4posh Phoenix, AZ back then. The main top 40 station was KZZP back then. In the previous few years several old stations either went defunct or changed their formats and call letters.
This songs takes me way way back to NYC in ‘82 , Fun House, Gotham West and Broadway 96
This song is the result of so many r & b hits.
I was trying to remember the name of this song for the last 30 years. I'm 40. I always recognize that one lyric, rhythm and video. Thank goodness for the Shazam app.
Tina Weymouth, 29th on the greatest bass players of all time “Rolling Stone” and this bass line is one of the reasons why. She was the “Genius of Love”
Oh wow RHINO thank you so much for sharing this video. This is a old school jam still sounds fantastic!
This track was released a few months after I was born... It has always been a high contender for my most favourite song ever!
The band it self is was just incredible! And with Talking Heads! BRO! One of my most fav bands ever! Its just one of the most glorious things to happen in music to me!
WOW FOREVER!
There is nothing like the original. I remember when this came out it was as different as it gets and it still is. Have to love it.
I loved the performance of this song in Stop Making Sense (one of my favorite films). I didn't realize the "James Brown" bit was actually part of the original recording. :-)
He still is the godfather of soul y'all!
Pax Gethen they changed up the lyrics a bit for that performance
I always love and am always thrilled by the Tom Tom Club's formula of disco/new wave/funk, and of course with their own touch on top of it all! It's not a formula or concept that could be pulled off by just anyone, but they were the ones meant to create it and successfully make it work.
This video is eye searing and yet at the same time I can’t help but try to absorb every detail
I love the vibe this artstyle gives off
I almost get like Rugrats vibes or something, lol
Still as fabulous as ever! Was watching the Suzie Q doc and Tina Weymouth popped up and I suddenly remembered the TT Club and wanted to hear this again. I’m suddenly transported back in my childhood bedroom aged 14! x
[Lyrics]
What you gonna do when you get out of jail?
I'm gonna have some fun
What do you consider fun?
Fun, natural fun
I'm in heaven
With my boyfriend, my laughing boyfriend
There's no beginning and there is no end
Time isn't present in that dimension
He'll take my arm
When we're walking, rolling and rocking
It is one time I'm glad I'm not a man
Feels like I'm dreaming, but I'm not sleeping
I'm in heaven
With the maven of funk mutation
Clinton's musicians such as Bootsy Collins
Raise expectations to a new intention
No one can sing
Quite like Smokey, Smokey Robinson
Wailin' and skankin' to Bob Marley
Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie
Oops! Your mama said uh
Oops! Your mama said uh
Oops! Your mama said uh
Oops! Your mama
Stepping in a rhythm to a Kurtis Blow
Who needs to think when your feet just go
With a hippie-the-hip and a hippie-the-hop
Who needs to think when your feet just go
Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon
Who needs to think when your feet just go
Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon, Bohannon
James Brown, James Brown
James Brown, James Brown
If you see him
Please remind him, unhappy boyfriend
Well, he's the genius of love
He's got a greater depth of feeling
Well, he's the genius of love
He's so deep
Haha, hadn't realized that there were version without the cocaine verse.

Being a young kid. Getting dropped off at the Aquarius Rollerena and having a Blast! This song would get us out skating real quick 🔥
When great music actually brought people together...
Great memories! 🎶
This music video is like a dream to me .
this song lives in my head rent free. every week i listen to it like 10x
The disco and R&B scene was booming when this came out. What a great beat and instrumental as well.
This song came out when I was 18 years old, I remember the disco and a boyfriend I had in that time, funky sound never gets old 🌈🌻🌈
I know right? Beautiful song. Godbless ❤
If anyone here is familiar with the man... In an interview Frank Zappa cited this song as being one of the only music videos he actually enjoyed "because it's animated and clever". High praise from a musical genius that thought music videos were simply a racket (He was quite cynical lol).
Also I love Tina Weymouth and the Talking Heads tons.
😁
AND Frank! Very talented; gone too soon!
Exactly why I am here...paused the Zappa interview to watch it. Once it started I instantly remembered it. Zappa was a genius.
@@diehappydie me as well lol
That bought me here, and I agree.
Music has changed so much but growing up in the 70's with such great music is memorable 👍
Watchin this after school in the early 80's. Was so far ahead of its time. Tina Weymouth was a visionary talent 💞🤙🍻
Sweetest song ever. So full of love. Found it a week ago and cant get over it

This video’s almost like a Sesame Street animated skit on a bit of drugs. LOL
They cut out the bit about cocaine
It kinda gives me that Sally Cruikshank vibe
@@EsmeMarion yeah like Quasi At The Quackadero.
Yes definitely drugs lol!
More Like Schoolhouse Rock
As a kid growing up, sharing a car with a family of five. We always fought about the radio. Parents liked Hispanic music, my siblings liked pop, I liked rock. My dad also really liked Funk. This is the only song that we all enjoyed. I grew up with the long version tho lol. Now we associate this song with long car drives.
The "Where your feet just so" part man... it's so good.
Bring us home home Charlie Kelly ...

I should not admit my past transgressions - but - I was 20 and living in Vegas when this song came out. It was everyone's favorite song and the dj's would play it over and over in the course of the evening. Who remembers dancing to this while doing poppers? In the same year, MTV was launched and of course, we had a huge party. The cops showed up and as they were leaving, one said "next time you cause a disturbance, make sure you put your bong away" ! OMG, what memories! I am truly amazed I made it out of the 80's alive!
Mariah Carey’s use of this song for her hit “Fantasy” is sooo good
She's was a child of the 80s.
This song is a prime example how two of the most underrated parts of a band can be the reason for a hit
Drum
and
Bass
Don’t 4 get da electric synthesizer with the bass keys and guitars… like the Hawaiian guitar for one
80's music is the best.. and It's Always Sunny 🌞 😎
This song is featured in a myriad of TV commercials, movies, cover tunes… it’s endless
The cute dog is the most memorable part of the video for me.
Genius of love was made on the Billboard chart at # 31 on April 24, 1982.

My 80s high school memories. When artists actually wrote & played original music 🎶 😍
My mom and Dad had listened to this song, this is a wonderful masterpiece, a “Big Energy”.
i always love when i hear this riff pop up sampled in other songs! it just makes me go back and listen to this more and that's always a good choice
i'm also utterly in love with the animation and style of the video! knowing it's all hand-drawn makes it even more impressive, it's just so fun to watch
I’ve always loved that underneath it all, this was an homage to Black music and artists! Shoutouts to Bootsy Collins, Sly and Robbie, Kurtis Blow, Smokey Robinson, and of course TGOS James Brown. I became a Talking Heads fan via the Tom Tom Club and I wouldn’t be surprised if many Talking Heads fans became fans of these artists via this song. That’s the power of music ❤
And Bob Marley, and the impact Reggae music has had on The Culture!✊🏾🎶
Yes, and that's what this song so classic!!!
Rarely does a video and a song stand the test of time...this could drop today and it would fit
