    10:00 I am an actual neon glass blower since when Carter was president. Clear glass filled with 100% neon gas electrical discharge glows an orange red. Clear glass filled with Argon and a small amount of mercury metal the electrical discharge will glow blue. In the parlance of the neon industry we call these two. Clear Red. and Clear Blue.
    Argon and mercury produces UV light therefore if the glass tube is coated on the inside with a fluorescent powder which absorbs the UV which causes it to glow with visible light. By using different fluorescent powders you can have a wide range of colors. The glow inside the tube at 10:00 is the argon mercury electrical discharge visible at the bends where by bending the glass tube the coating is slightly thinner allowing it to be seen slightly.

    For anyone who looking at this in 2021, idk if its new Blender or not but for the life of me I couldn't find the middle point to seperate the back and front part when doing color ramp by following Andrew tutorial, it just wouldn't work, its either full black or full white.
    I found another alternative way which is just convert the whole thing into mesh, press 7 for top down view, turn on transparency mode, use box select to select all the back part, then assign it to a different material altogether and change that to black 👌🏻

    Andrew. This is an awesome tutorial! I just converted from my life-long subscription based Foundry Modo to Blender. I find it extremely intuitive but you help make the learning curve much easier for me. And for what it's worth: Neon and argon are most commonly used for lighting applications. Neon glows an orange-red, and argon glows blue. Mercury is added to the tubing to cause the gases to fluoresce.

    Tips for newbies like me-
    - Change the world color to black ( I noticed this after trying for hours, why the wall is orange color. Its dark so it should be black)
    - if you are using the free texture scale down the displacement to 0.02 ( works best for me)
    - Increase the render sample to 300 or something

    Just thought I would mention because I feel it's beneficial to know, though using Hotkeys makes for a faster workflow, it's just as integral to know where the actual menu option is as well. One can't be expected to memorize hundreds of Hotkeys, especially if what we intend to use Blender for doesn't use 1/2 of them. Also seeing as how Blender changed their Hotkeys for the new version, it now makes following the tutorials for the older version that much harder, especially if its someone just learning Blender (Unless your target audience for these tutorials are for people already deftly familiar with Blender).

    The reason I ask is because my girlfriend is interested in learning blender for architecture and I suggested she start with 2.8 immediately, since it is so much more beginner-friendly and it would be silly to start learning everything the old way only months before much of it changes quite substantially.

    Argon is blue if no luminescence powder is used and is pretty much the standard since it makes optimal use of the mercury ion stream required to make the luminescence powders work (cost is also a factor).
    Neon is red and is the only one that doesn't need mercury to establish a stable electron flow and stays red even if luminescence powders are used, unless mercury is added .
    Xeon is green and is not commercially used, only in research settings.
    In the past nitrous gases were used and created a yellow-ish glow, but that was only ever used in street lamps and has been obsolete and discontinued for decades.
    Many neon signs have an argon/neon mix for winter conditions, so that the sign can glow even in freezing cold weather right from the start when turning on. It will glow red until the mercury starts evaporating, at what point it will gradually take on the colour determined by the luminescence powder.

    quick note from me: EEVEE now has the capability to cast emissions on walls, but it won't work by default. You will need to use an irradiance volume object to get this to work, it's best to watch a video on how that works since I can't describe it well enough through text. This is far from perfect and it will take some tweaking before it looks the way it should, but in theory it will work in EEVEE that way

    If anyone is trying to render their image and getting a funky double-text sign (the tubes seem to be duplicated next to each other), it's probably because that original backup text layer we created in Part 1 is being rendered, even if it's hidden in the Viewport! In your layer filters (funnel icon), click the Camera icon to show what layers will be rendered out. make sure all layers you don't want (like the original duplicate text layer) is DE-selected. That "inner tube" you mention at around 10:00 is dependent on the thickness of the tube. So it's basically just the wall thickness of the glass, nothing fancy. Neon signs are mostly (well at least where I'm from) are still filled with various gases or the tube itself is coloured. A keen eye can spot the difference at a glance. Interesting topic, worth reading more about.

    I'm new to Blender... kind of. I've fiddled with Blender here and there from the 2.6x series, but the views and everything else had me out of sorts. I'm one of those who doesn't get something unless it is in the right way for me. Western chess, for example, I was not good at. Chinese chess, which is similar but different, turns out that I could see 5, 10, 15 moves ahead. The pieces are flat rather than standing up. After that, I started noticing that I was good at things if the view was different or something like that. So, Blender was confusing me and I kept coming back and now with this new version, it feels like everything has fallen into place. It feels really easy to follow along now, so, with renewed desire, thank you for teaching. Even though I'm familiar with the ideas of 3D, I need to approach this as a complete newbie as I don't know any of the commands or how to maneuver very well, but hopefully I'll pick it up. There were a couple of things that I had to figure out on my own in part like hitting V for structure type. Thank you and I hope you don't mind me asking newbie questions every now and then.

    I'd like to disagree on that eever sucks on meshlighting, you can very well make this work.
    Roughly: use Bloom and turn on screen space reflection.
    Lastly if you really want to go for it add a colour probe and bake the lighting

    • @Lattamonsteri
      @Lattamonsteri 5 років тому

      Yes! I'm a bit annoyed that Andrew just trashtalk Eevee without proper research. :/ only thing with Eevee is that making the strobe effect is probably impossible cuz baked lightmaps cannot be animated (yet at least). Well i guess you could bake the different lighting conditions into bitmap textures and use them in a material where you animate the mix factor. :p

    10:03 Isn't the gas that is used for neon signs called......... you know...... Neon? Hence the name "neon sign"? Neon (Ne) is the second - from top to bottom - element from the Noble Gases collumn, just under the Helium.
    Argon is the third on the collumn. I'm not sure if it's also used for light signs. It might be, idk.

    • @multiapples6215
      @multiapples6215 5 років тому +1

      I think people use a variety gasses for neon signs, neon being one of them (obviously), because different gases emit different colors.

      Actually Neon causes the orange color like in the picture and Argon is glowing kind of blue, whilst Xenon is glowing Purple. Neon signs usually contain a mix of gases to produce a certain color

    • @Yassir.A.P.
      @Yassir.A.P. 3 роки тому +3

      This is late answer, but in case someone doesn't know how:
      You just animate the strength of the Emission shader.
      (Move to certain frame, set the Strength value to 0 for turning off the light, then right click > Insert Keyframe or just press I when hovering your mouse cursor over the Strength value.) There you go. Don't forget to make the keyframe interpolation as "constant". Just go to another frame, and change the Strength value, and you'll have the light flickers.

    Hello, thank you very much for this tutorial! Is it eventually possible to make a short part 3 about the final render or comment on what settings you used for having the same glow effect as in the beginning your "Blender Guru" sign? Eventually also how to apply different colours if you have two words would be great! And do you use additional lights here or is the only light coming from the neon sign itself?

    • @lhakuma
      @lhakuma 8 місяців тому

      Don't know if it's still relevant, but the only light source here is the neon sign. If you want different colors on different words, make the words be different objects, and use different emission shaders.
      The effect in the beginning is a simple light on and off animation, and I've seen some tutorials on that floating around :)

    Not that it's really all that important here, but just for people's curiosity: Helium is pink, Neon is that classic red/orange, Argon is purple or violet, Krypton is white, and Xenon is blue. There are other things that you can excite to get fun colors, but these are the noble gases.

    Awesome tutorial. Neon Artist here, Ill be making renders of my designs now to preplan my bends. Anyone in LA the Museum of Neon Art in Glendale is awesome. You can learn to make neon to keep. They also have city tours for Neon. Las Vegas has the Neon Museum and New York has Brooklyn Bends. Check them out. There are about maybe in an optimistic view of 400 neon artists left in the US. I love sharing knowledge of the 100-year-old art of neon making. Those are legit Neon in his reference. LEDs are narrow plastics flex light. Neon gas is red in clear glass. Argon is purplish, Krypton is white. There is no gel in the glass. Sometimes there is the tiniest amount of mercury to add to the color. Neon gets different colors based on a phosphor coat in the glass plus one of the noble gases of choice in the bombardment process. You can see the original color near the ends since the Electorods are clear but usually painted. Fun sad Fact? Helium is not renewable. Once its gone, it's gone. It floats out of the atmosphere. So easily the US GOV the largest holder of helium pumped it underground in porous rocks so it doesn't float away. It is apparently a strategic resource. Yet we put it in plastic ballons............ I found a dead balloon in the woods once. They do eventually come down creating litter. Its a bit problematic. Dont buy LED FLEX posing as Neon. Neon is all handmade from skills only learned from feeling gravity pull hot glass. Neon Last 80 years plus and usually it just the transformer that needs to be replaced. LED maybe lasts a year and its made from cheap earth destroying plastic. Nonrepairable. Support your local artist. Keep on learning. Blender is a god send, Neon will forever be cool.

      It depends on what texture you have. If they have a displacement map, then make sure you check if it's being enabled in the advanced objects tab right before hitting load/apply.
      Don't forget to use a subdivision modifier and actually change the output for Displacement strength.
