Mesa Boogie Mark III vs Dual Rectifier vs. Traditional 4x12 vs. Standard Oversize cab

- Hey guys, did a comparo that I've been wanting to find on YT & couldn't. What I wanted to show is the inherent tonal differences between a Mesa 4x12 Traditional Straight Rectifier cabinet vs. the Standard / OS Straight 4x12 cab. To show it better, I've done it with both a Mark III red stripe & a Dual Rectifier rackmount head. Most guys think the Mark pairs better with the trad cab & the Recto pairs better with the OS cab. What do YOU think?
The ESP Hanny is straight in and the knobs are the same for both cabs. I am using the SPC on the guitar for a 6db boost. Recorded with a SM57 & a E609 on the cab.
Mark III, Trad cab- 2:29
Mark III, OS cab- 3:40
Dual Rectifier, Trad cab- 4:53
Dual Rectifier, OS cab- 6:05
I'm not going to lie. The Mark III ate the Recto for lunch.
Thanks my friend. That III is an anomaly in that it's the only head I've ever really liked with my OS slant cab.
Mark III has a particular 80s thrashy muddy sound, it obv gave a lot of character to Nevermind/those Mettalica albums. The Rectifier blows it away as a versatile full on rock amp with clarity.
Agreed. That Mark III through the Traditional cab, Wow! Am I the only person that prefers that match?
@@Kevin.Kelly. Marks with Trad cabs are a pretty ubiquitous choice. :)
@@mayserrr1 you obviously havent spent enough time with a mark 3 to get to know the controls. You can take the mud out with a few pulls and turns. Not a "muddy" amp unless you fail to operate it.
GREAT and useful video, thanks!
I find that if you listen to the Traditional cab clips first, it sounds balanced and bright, clear, while the OS cab sounds just a bit muffled.
However, if you listen to the OS cab first and get used to it, then swap to the Traditional, The Traditional cab sounds thin and maybe a bit choked.
The Traditional cab is bright and grabs your attention but I think the OS sounds best when listening for extended periods. It has more depth and dimension I think.
I liked the OS cabinet with both amps because of the fuller low end, especially in the muted chunk chords. I have owned one for 16 years and run a Mk IV B combo through it also using it's C90 sounds incredible! The older metal grill cabs with C90's are killer as well. The V30's are dark and the celestions are brighter. I am going to swap 2 celestions in with my V30s in my OS cab and my Old metal grill cab too and then run both. I think if you just had one cab just swapping two speakers out will make the perfect Cab for playing alone wanting to hear the most fullness and it would work killer in a band mix with the celestions cutting through. I love the My OS angled straight sided cab for its big top shelf to sit my combo amps on. It's a beast to move though. I also used to run my MKIV through two old Marshall 4x10 cabs I bought in the late 80's just because that's all I had back then, They sounded so tight and they cut through the band really well and handled the high gain chug unbelievably well. TBH they only farted out a tiny bit if pushed super hard only on the chug. Porting the back panels would've fixed that problem. I miss those little cabs super easy to gig with too. Keep up the great Videos J.
Sick tones. I have a OS Slant on order but I will cancel and go with a Straight instead! Thanks for the knowledge.
Should have kept the slant
@@Montreal_Audio_Systemsnah. you can't argue with Tighten's findings he's got to be one of the most knowledgeable when it comes to Mesa cabs.
Have Triple, MK3 Red, 50 cal+, f100, DC 3, used with Orange HP8 k100's, Marshall 1960bx greenies, 1960bv t75/v30 in X(first runs) Marshall Small cab w 5150 1200's top & Emi ST bottom(punch you in the chest cab) the beauty is all the amps kill in those cabs,, its the variety that inspires,, every spare hour the rest of my life is scheduled in..with this madness all set up ready to record !
Awesome collection dude! I also have a .50 cal+ and a DC3 (and a Single Rectifier). How would you say the 50 cal+ and the DC3 compare to a MK3? Strictly for high gain stuff that is
Great comparison. I love the massive wall of sound, room filling, old school tone of the OS. Sounded great with both amps. In the house the OS wins. On stage I’d want both for the mass and cut the Traditional has in spades.
Didn't expect to like the OS cab better. I've always hated the OS recto cabs until I found a early 1990s straight/slant. Absolutely love my Friedman and Bogner traditional sized cabs though.
I think there's just some variance cab to cab as well when you're looking at older ones. It's all about the package deal!
It's crazy how different Mesa cabs can sound. I've had an oversized slant for years. Recently got a horizontal 2x12 rectocab and was shocked to find that it sounds better to me than the 4x12. It's not tighter though, it has a looser low end which I actually prefer.
Mesa amps are awesome🤘🏻
Oversize Cab 😱😍
Thanks for the video! Thinking about getting a Zilla cab never asked myself whether I should get a normal or oversized cab before and iv been playing guitar for about 15 years give or take lol Also nice thought on the straight cab think that's what I'm going to do.
It really makes a big difference!
I've owned several Rectos and several Marks. Rectos are great for a straight up modern metal tone that's impossible to screw up but a Mark III Blue Stripe, Mark IV, or Mark V are all able to do everything a Recto does, and more, and do it better. I've owned them all. Today I have a Mark III Blue and a Mark V 90.
Wow, both sound better with the Standard cab.
Jeremy, honestly I like the OS the most, miked is fuller, maybe less tighter, but a great sound, the Traditional is scooped but I think it fits really well in a mix contest, better than the OS. And yes, this III is a beast.
Thanks, the OS is definitely fuller. In the room the Trad is addictive when you get it JUST RIGHT, but can be hard to convey through the mic.
The oversize is really what will get the metal tone out!🤘
I prefer both amps through the OS. Less nasal. Also prefer the Racktifier, Bigger and warmer sounding, though the III through the OS probably nails the tone the most. What are your Recto settings? Can't really see them. Thx!
Thanks. I've always preferred the Mark for home and the Recto in the band mix. Agree the OS is less nasal but it's more boxy. Really it's good to have both as they are better for different things. Also, different heads just like different cabs!
Recto settings-
Presence 7:30
Bass 3:00
Mid 9:00
Treble 3:00
Gain 1:30
Bold Diode Red
Note in the band mix I'd pull the bass WAY back, bring the mids up to noon-ish & probably bring the presence up to around 9:00.
Great comparison! Could you make a comparison between straight and slanted cabinets? Perfectly trad slant, trad straight, OS slant, OS straight in one video.
I've since sold all my slants. But I do have this.

I liked the traditional cab the best. It's tighter sounding. The oversized cab sounded good too. I also prefer the Mark over the Racktifier.
Thanks, the Trad is definitely tighter- and has a little more mids. The OS sounds bigger & I think a little more neutral sounding.
Oversized has just more bass snd less mids and treble/prescence, still sounds "tight"
I prefer recto without a doubt
Help! I'm in tone fantasy heaven \m/
AND.....they both sound great. lol. good job though. thanks
Could you tell me what is the difference between the traditional and oversized one ? In 1-size/age. 2-sounds. 3-price used if in good condition (what’s the avg price)
The Traditional cab is the same dimension as a Marshall 1960 cab. The Oversize / Standard cab is about 3" taller. Prices are all the same, $400-600 for a used one depending on condition and straight vs. slant.
Differences in tone are present but subjective. I prefer straights in all situations other than in the band with no PA where the monitor effect from the slant is nice.
fast13b found one for $500 (i think it’s Oversized not sure cuz the guy is also not sure!) looks super clean thu so I am Gonna pull the trigger ! Thanks for your none stop help! I am a subscriber and will always be haha
I have a 4x12 oversize slant table I really like the sound of it, but I really like the sound of the straight! .. If I paste more bass or volume I could leave it with the same sound as this straight, or I would have to have a straight to have the same sound of it !? thank you
I also have an OS slant. It is more upper mid & fizzy. Works well in the band but I don't like recording with it.
The OS straight it one of the most balanced cabs I've played. The sound is completely different. See here-
ua-cam.com/video/VdjJ6dhFwMs/v-deo.html
mark with traditional and rectifier with standar
I hear a use for both, which sucks for the wallet!
Reece Hammett lol
I have 2 over sized recto cabs and 1 4FB all straight, and the smaller cabs are way better, tighter, more percussive.
What does FB means? You mean Fat bottom?
@@bulletrider8893 Not sure, but it’s wider than the standard, thicker.
The Mark all day. Of course Im biased, I have an '89 .50 Caliber Plus 6L6 Version
That mark iii sounds like a coliseum how many tubes does it have 4 or 6?
The MkIII is a DRG. Here's the same amp compared to my KRG.
ua-cam.com/video/OW7Yz1FaVQE/v-deo.html
@@TIGHTENmetal I thought it had 6 tubes lol it sounds killer, your coli and red stripe go toe to toe lucky man currently been searching for one.
Hey buddy, if you don't gig and don't care about recording, all about IN THE ROOM, which one is more pleasing to the ear, OS or trad (all straight)? can the OS be tight with a Mark amp? people tend to exaggerate, so when they say it's very boomy and have way too much bass i'm not sure. Thanks man!
They are both high quality tones, just different. With my Coliseum they are both epic. With a mere lower wattage Mark I think the Traditional has the edge. It's tighter with more mids. The OS is looser but more well balanced.
Realistically you have tone knobs on the amp, so the main factor is the response of the cab.
@@TIGHTENmetal Thanks man, it's gonna be a tough choice but i can't with the 1x12 rectos anymore haha
@@TIGHTENmetal I decided to go for the traditional straight man, hopefully that'll be it, pushing the JP2C and my Mark III, driving 4 speakers as it should, hopefully it will be full and fat, not brittle, harsh and stiff with piercing highs, when i play on an IR 4x12 it's honey, so creamy the fretboard is easy to play, it's a feel, not only tone, never felt that on my mini 1x12 rectos. Let's hope =D
@@tomh4244 Hope so! Remember, with the real deal getting the volume up helps this feel as well. I'd say at least 110dB.
@@TIGHTENmetal Yea i'm fortunate to be in a place where i'll be able to crank the volume, my issue with the mini 1x12s is that i hated to crank them up, hurt the ears, despite lowering presence and 6600Hz, it was so harsh and screaming, and because i lowered pres and 6k, the sound had no character anymore, that was shit lol
2:30 start
Never put any beverage on top of my amps.
The Dual Recto with the over sized cab sounds most like to original Metallica "One" I think the Mark III is a better sounding amp tho, I think I might have to go out and find another one. Use to own two at one time. A purple and a blue stripe.
Thanks. I recommend owning one of each. :)
5:38 6:51
3:14 4:25
Dual Rec and OS/
Rectifier has some "nasal" sound, whereas Mark III souns punchy and raw, like early Metallica albums
3:20 and 5:40
Horrible tone for both. Even worse playing. Damn
Go listen to Taylor swift then p-ssy boy because he doesn’t sound far off from Metallica
Im 2yrs late to this party but, my 2 cents is the recto’s sound great on their own. When comparing them to a Mark in the same video which sound way better, they make the recto’s sound like trash
Can't say I disagree..
