Dan, you were lucky licking off a spoon. My Mom gave us the mixing beaters, and would turn them on while out tongue was on them. Another great video.

Started watching this and having been a farmer I'd suggest looking into free ranging some laying hens to get eggs for yourselves. they don't require much in the way of feeding if you free range them, and require only a safe place to shelter out of weather you could definitely speak to locals there about it, might prove an easy way to make a little cash as well as provide you with a nice food source.

Put cardboard or some sheeting over the comoost, the heat will make it sweat, kepping it damp and helps it break down too,

Thank you for being so willing to share your lives.
I don't know if anyone else has said anything, but your fruit trees and the grapes are in desperate need of being pruned. Watch some videos or get the locals to tell you what and how to do it. It's very simple.
Keep the videos coming. I'm cheering for your success in everything you do.

Good evening. Just stumbled on your video. Very jealous. I spotted some of the fruit was black in the middle. This is from coddling moth. They lay grubs in the blossom. The fruit then grows around the grub. The grub then has a food supply to eat as it grows. In England we spray in November with a winter tree wash to kill off the moths that hibernate on the tree. Keep up the good work.

I don't know what you have available to you, but if you cut one of your larger water bottles in half you can use two small nails to attach it to a stick to harvest your fruit. (My grandparents used coffee cans) Simply cradle your fruit inside of it and push upwards. It keeps your fruit from falling to the ground. Don't forget about dehydrating your fruit either. It can last a long while like that. Still tastes good to! You should have most of the items you need hanging out on your land. I KNOW you have the items needed to make a post and pully system for your well. Pull it up by the bucket and not the can! A few hours worth of work doing that will save you hours of work until you get your piping system in! As always, a GREAT video and I look forward to more! Great editing!

You can also use the top half of the bottle, take the cap off, put the stick through the opening and secure it with a nail on each side. Such an easy to make, great tool! 🤗

Hi guys just a hint, those trees need a good trimming next winter, and also need some good compost for those roots, you will have better fruits and healthier trees. Always remember to prune it from the inside out, take all dead branches first and all cross branches too, the air needs to flow properly, it is a labour of love ,all the best for your new rural life.🤞

Hi guys. I live in South Africa so I know the heat. Well done the 2 of you. Great job so far.
Some tips, I also have pallet compst bins. I cover mine with a tarp/plastic to keep the moisture in.
Look on youtube for "Offgrid With Dough and Stacey". They have been doing it for 13 years and live solely of rainwater. I have learned so much from them, I am sure you would also.
Good luck on your journey. I know you will succeed and prosper!

Tip to picking fruit higher up, is cut a 2 lts water bottle in half and tie/screw it to your long stick and harvest that way, so the fruit falls into the bottle and not get bruised hitting the ground.

HINT - if you love bay leaf flavour like I do, use them fresh and always start by saute them with onion and garlic. the flaour will be stronger so you may want to add less. but I love it I will add 6 - 8 leaves fresh for a pot of food. Portuguese cooking isn't Portuguese without bay leaf. You are so lucky to have such a big established tree.

    Brilliant video guys!!!
I didn't get a notification this week that you'd posted!? (Check that as I have notifications on but you might be missing views etc if the algorithm isn't working correctly!? I had it with a couple channels this last week or two so don't want you guys losing views etc)
Your videos are great and getting better each time you post! Was good seeing the composting and hand washing etc. Also Very funny at the end btw! 😂
Just a side note that I saw a video on how to build a DIY water pump that uses pressure created by a coupe of PVC pipes and some one way valves , no moving parts or engine, you start it manually by pumping it up n down in the water few times or placing on a stream of flowing water, once pressure builds it works like a Syphon, don't know if it would work for the well or not but worth checking out(saw a couple different ones on UA-cam but if you can do it cheaply yourself and not use fuel might save some money just an thought as you're off Grid?)
Look forward to the next one!

Just a theory..

Nice life and project. Important tip from a life long builder and landowner/grower. When using a drill - battery or otherwise to install screws, don't toggle the switch off and on. Make a decision and go forward! You will burn up the switch in short order. Drill pilot holes with a second drill... As for your shower house, the junk wood on the outside might work, but the inside should have been insulated and sealed up tight with plywood or milled wood. You will soon discover that rats and mice are the farmsteaders main enemy and cause immense destruction. The Portuguese didn't build with stone without a good reason.
I built a composting toilet when I was your age; young and dumb. Nice idea but a horror story altogether. Finally, that old crap and dirt in your stone house floor was the basis for the best compost on earth. Should be piled and all your new organics mixed in. I live in your sort of climate, but higher in the mountains of California, you should be most aware of the fire hazards! Rather use steel or stone for siding than wood and keep your orchard mowed very low. I lost many buildings in 2008. Wishing I had such a stone structure to refresh!

Another great video guys. We love watching you both. A little tip for your compost heap - if you're able to get a watering can, use that instead of a bucket to spread the water more equally through the heap. But the bucket will do for now, you're keeping it moist & that's the main thing.
I'd love to know more about your transition from UK to Portugal (cost of the land, the legal process of buying property/land, getting residency after brexit, driving the van over there etc..) Perhaps that might be an idea for a future video in the future?

It's class to live a simple life like ancestors did, that's where the happiness can be found. But unfortunately now a days as a man, really hard to find a woman who likes simple life, most are looking for villa with swimming pool, Ferrari or Porsche car and house servant while they are busy at hair dresser sharpening their nails 😂🙏

Very happy with your videos but by experience i think you should go a head and start with building projects. The sooner the better. If you keep just doing things for pleasure and not for commodity and 2 start your new life you will see that in a year you look back and have nothing to show. Up to you. That's only my way and so far is working. Looking forward for next video

Hi Mario, thanks for your input. We have been working on building projects, but there are reasons why we are doing things the way we are and it would be unnecessary and tedious for us to explain this in every video we do.

@ Mario Gargola, we are all different with different aims, time tables and goals. I'm on the 4th year of living on my small holding and only now am I getting around to restoring the house. Getting to know the land, the connection to the soil, to the plants, to the wildlife, to the seasons, to where the sun rises and sets, planting trees and growing food,,, this is all part of the journey and a unique experience. No day is ever wasted and everything will be done in the fullness of time. Doing things for experience is of as much value as doing things for "commodity". We each must do what resonates with our self. What serves our higher selves.
And I say this as someone who worked a 70 hour week for nearly all my adult life, continually aiming at commodity,,,,,,until I started creating my smallholding.. Much Blessings to you from my little croft in Scotland.

@@theoriginhomestead Hi Don't get me wrong. I was just saying the way works for me. Sure not the same for everyone. Like Les Reid say everybody as different aims time tables and goals. If that's the way works for you keep doing that. I'm very happy to enjoy your videos the way they are. Any help in translation or anything i could help from Ireland let me know. I'm always happy to help special young people like you Chau
