The best thing I like about being off grid on my 60 acres is that it doesn’t matter if it takes me 3 days or 3 weeks to do something as there is no time restraints and as a retired service technician that is truly a blessing to work at your own pace. Good luck to you all!
I mean there is somewhat because depending on where you live you kind of need to get things done before winter because it can be a bit harder to get food during winter because less animals out and less plants growing but other then that yeah you have a pretty big time limit
That is my dream to once be able to be nearly 100% self sufficient and sustainable. I’d like to wakeup and work at my own pace in my own space. Eat food that I’ve grown and raised. Such a satisfying and rewarding feeling. I am pushing towards it. Aloha👍🏼🙏🏼🤙🏼
This is not a negative comment, just an observation - going off grid is much easier if you have a lot of great tools available. Technology is very helpful. I applaud what you are doing.
I agree, but it’s so much more better when you make do with what you have. Then you add a piece when you need it. This is so much better this way. God bless you both❤️
Growing up we recycled everything that neighbors would scrap. Our family home became 80% neighbor scrap lol. They actually would come over and just ask us first if we wanted their scrap before tossing it into the transfer station. We lived off the land farming, hunting, fishing, shrimping, crabbing, going into the jungle and scavenging for wild yam, and other bounties it would provide. Time moved by at a snail's pace and the only stress we had was that from each other's personalities lol. It would all change when we discovered Netflix, cable tv, "convenience". It's been 12 years since moving from the island to the States for work and living the corporate slave life. I have discovered there can be more stupidly stressful things and this video has reminded me of my roots and the important things in life. I simply want to say thank you and it may be time for me to return home and become the ultimate hunter gatherer once again.
You know what Laura you and Dan you have done the right thing to start a new life in Portugal 🇵🇹 I'm 86 years young ha ha I would loved to do what you are doing its a much better way of life the way you have chosen all the very best I will be following your journey god bless stay safe ❤
This is absolutely awesome! You two have transformed the abandoned farm and created a homestead in such a short space of time. Planning some things in advance was a really good decision.Well done👏🏽👏🏽 I have been following you from day 1, and can't believe that it has only been 3 months! I wish you continued success.
I think your video may be the last push I need to get my wife on board with my crazy ideas... We are from Portugal and I have dreamed of returning for years. We have 4 kids we want to give a wild and natural life to. I too want to travel a bit and head back out there to get an abandoned plot and turn it into something sublime like you have done.👍😍
Keep it up! The time will soon come where you start to see what life is like after all your hard work, in that beautiful place you both call home, stay safe and be happy.
A big change from Newcastle City Centre! We've really enjoyed watching your videos, we moved over from Newcastle to Central Portugal a couple of years ago and we've been renovating an old house in a tiny village for the last year. Best of luck!
Beautiful film. It's not only the Portuguese who shared their farmhouses with animals. The Welsh Longhouse was designed to do exactly that, with the thought that the heat given off by the beasts in one half would help to keep the family warm in the other (that's the theory, I've never actually tested it). Recycling pallets is a great idea, the cost of new wood at builders' merchants is astronomical. You could build yourself a large flat trolley (like a kid's go-cart) to transport heavy things from the road to your homestead. It's amazing how manageable heavy things become once you get some wheels underneath them. I would level the track with a pick, using earth and stones from the high spots to fill in the ruts. The Sprinter will roll it down. Onwards and upwards!
Noo not Welsh but Flesh n Desh 😂😂😂, and Anglo-Saxon opressor to Scotland tribe😂 What a laughing stock UK, Londonistan will convert you into Muslim country😂
Congratulations to both of you, tremendous Such joy seeing a young couple usung their skills determination and openness to building and making an off grid life Love your use of recycled materials and off cuts Much love and respect to you, inspirational 💓
I have not missed a single part of your journey. It's so close to the way we started. Keep at it, after a while you will be doing jobs you WANT to do not jobs you HAVE to do. That makes all the difference in the world. I realize the budget is tight and currency is an issue but with Christmas being right around the corner maybe you can sweet talk Santa (or Father Christmas if you prefer) into bringing you a sturdy garden cart. One where the sides are removable Moving your IBC's would have been a breeze once they were balanced on it. You will find it more useful than the wheelbarrow over time. If he won't spring for that, you still need a decent garden rake especially if you plan on planting some crops of your own. It never hurts to ask! Recap videos are hard. A lot of editing and a great deal of time is required. You did a GREAT job with this one!! Keep smiling, keep working and keep making the videos we like to see!
Wow Laura and Dan this is just awe inspiring! Thank you so much for taking us on this beautiful journey. To see how far you have come in such a short space of time is just brilliant! It gives me hope and so much inspiration for my future and what changes i'd like to make for myself! Lots of love 🙂
I'm so proud of you Laura and Dan. You know what keep me to this channel, it is the way you both work do things together, the team work. I'm in love with your both, 🥰
It was awesome to see your journey building your homestead from scratch. I wish you both success in the next 3 months and can't wait to see what's coming up next. Thanks guys for a great video. Luv from Australia, I'm on holiday at my daughter for Christmas 🌲🎅
If I can help you with one tip get approximately 12 foot length of rope or cloth and tie it together to make a loop now put it through the pallet on one side of the ibc then use the rope cloth to carry the ibc by putting the rope over your shoulders you’ll find it a lot easier to carry big things as your using your body to do the work not your arms and back. Keep up the good work and get yourselves sorted to temporary sleep in the barn at least you can have a wood fire to warm over the winter months. Waiting for next episode. Xx
What a long journey of experience and hard work to get to where you both are now. You did a fantastic job, be proud of yourselves!! Loved this summary of all you did.
Yes the simple life is just the way to go. Thus doesn't mean no hard work it means a more rewarding experience of life. So blessed to find this out early.
Beautiful progress. Beautiful mind set. I’m just starting out with my little place and like you say, sometimes it’s so easy to get overwhelmed or worried one doesn’t know how to do things… but if you try, at least you are Doing Something, taking steps forward…as if you never try, you just stay in the same place. Love watching what you get up to. It’s all looking so lovely already xxx
Love the videos and following your progress. When building a wall using wooden studs it works better to build it on the ground and then stand it up and brace it. Repeat until all walls are up. Works great on walls 12 feet or shorter. This will also help to make sure all is square. Great job ya'll
You bring a tear to my eye 2 young people going out and taking what you need not what society tells us we should have please don't give up. 64 year old who had this opportunity 35 years ago just had to sign paper work 1st wife would not go 10 years later we split up o well that's the way it goes good luck Will continue to watch your journey.
Good Afternoon from Arizona you and Dan works so good together I absolutely love love watching you and following you two on your journey. Looking forward to next weeks video until then take care.
It is always nice to see couples building their house together and having fun with it 🙂 Most of the time, I have to work alone on our house project and we definetly have not so nice weather conditions here in germany ;-)
Brilliant video! Great seeing the whole journey recapped in one video and amazing to see how much you got done in just 3 months! Well done! And great videography too! Well done on that was very professional and great voiceover and music too! You should be really proud of how much you guys have achieved in such a short time! 💪😎 Looking forward to seeing what's next on the journey! Have a great rest of the week! Cheers from London 👍🏴🇬🇧
I'm old now, I've done this. My heat sings seeing your adventure. I hope you are both happy and enjoying the REAL way to live. My partner did little to help me, years of hard work and took most at at the end. Stick together and be sane.
Huge Respect to you both. Absolutely feel and admire your love and passion for life. Best of all, is seeing you both enjoying the journey together! God bless!
I loved watching your video. It’s made me realise how jealous i am of what you’ve achieved. Especially as someone who’s been going to Portugal on and off for the last 30 years (and not to the Algarve) I know how beautiful and peaceful the interior of this country is. I appreciate that your video has condensed all the best bits as I’m sure there’s been some tough moments but keep going on what your doing. It’s Absolutely wonderful stuff.
Awesome video! It is always fascinating to watch the countryside's beauty. Congrats on what you have accomplished in a such short time. Can't wait to see what's coming up next.
Here I'm waking up in my semi truck in top sleeper, I enjoy this project I love you guys just wow Amazing and well done Congrats u make me cry in end the song 🤣🤣 Good luck with everything
Found this upload by total accident, one of the best things I've watched all year. Wishing this amazing couple all the happiness in the world , it's so nice to see people can still have hopes and dreams
You need something on wheels such as a cart, dolly or hand truck to help you to move heavy and bulky things around your property. You can use use planks as temporary "walkways/driveways" to smoothe over rough patches. Keep going.👍
WHAT AN AWESOME EDITING JOB. BEAUTIFUL VID!! SO GLAD TO SEE ALL THE STEPS OF PROGRESS. ITS A GOOD FEELING TO SEE YOUNG PEOPLE DOING THE THINGS WE SHOULD HAVE DONE WHEN WE WERE YOUR AGES. IM PLAYING CATCHUP, BUT BETTER LATE THAN NEVER I SAY. FORGETTHAT NORMAL RATRACE PROGRAMMED SOCIETY. I ACTUALLY DONT EVEN LIKE GOING TO TOWN ANYMORE. I JUST LIKE TO STAY HOME AND WORK ON MY HOMESTEAD. LIVING OFF THE BARE MINIMUM. BEING FARTHER AWAY FROM THINGS IS SAFER TOO, AND THERE IS A PEACE IN THAT. BE SURE TO STORE WATER AND FOOD AND SUPPLIES AS WE ARE GOING THROUGH A TUFF TIME SOON. THATS REALITY. BUT GOD IS STILL EVERYWHERE, IN THE STARS, THE SUNRISE ,AND ENJOY EACH NEW DAY, YOLO. WELL DONE ON THE HOMESTEAD.....
A brave decision to take on a property like that and I thnk you have made the right decision on not trying to restore too much land, and if needs be you can always purchase some more. Having a well-organised tool shed is a big help. The old barn is similar to the house of my Polish wife's grandparents and how they used to live. What I like about this project in particular is your use of recycled materials.
I put old plastic car mats and brick etc, under floor of my shed, painted with old paint even put varnish and oil to mix, can filter with window screen and large metal ceiling light cover with hole in center to drain good paint
You guys are courages, gutsy and have more talents you are developing as you build your life! I love the quality of your videos too! Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas! ❤️🇨🇦
Very Cool! The Wife and I are looking at land right now. Of course we wont be exactly homesteading considering were both in our mid 50's. And living in America in our case Texas we want a bit more land,we need forty acres for hunting purposes and just shooting as a hobby. We plan on having a Barndominium built which if you dont know what that is it's one large building with your living area and the shop under one roof. Looking to go mainly solar and possibly wind power. Still want to be hooked up to the grid for those just in case moments that can pop up. And of course we'll have a garden and raise chickens and possibly some goats and a milk cow. Well lease a small section to a rancher for grazing purposes which will give us an ag exemption on our taxes.
Respect to you two. Good job on the homestead. You are making steady progress and the best thing of all is you will always remember the lessons you learned along the way. Greetings from fellow off grinders. 👍🏻
You didn't hear this from me ;P but I would use a long lumber/2x4 as a yoke between two people and tie the IBC Totes to the lumber. It'll be a leg lift vs an arm lift. Awesome content!
That is amazing hi there I'm from Greece I had transformed my grandfather's old barn in to a small home that I used to go and relax in the nature, very nice video bravo 👏
your journey is awesome, hard work dedication endurance and just the love of doing things simpler.. my hats off to you my respects take care be safe have fun life is an adventure and your living it! Dan Laura to help you out wen moving those big totes around again re-invent the wheel tale scraps make wheel say20 inches in dimeter your choice make an axle out of wood post and then hook one wheel on each end of axle make two axles and then put beam in center so you have a 4 wheel cart. when done it should look like a huge H with wheels. you could either push or pull it. it should roll fine if you make the wheels thick enough.
I so admire you guys 😊 you pull together and work so hard. Well done on all you’ve achieved in such a short period of time… you are going to be successful because of your wonderful qualities of patience, resilience and endurance 👏👏❤ x

Wonderfull vlog I enjoyed watching all your achievements again. A reminder of your courage starting a new life far from your original home. Thank you for sharing your experiences. 🙂
Wow..I can say BY Far that this is the Best Video I have ever seen on homesteading. You Two Definitely Did an amazing job and were So Creative and it was definitely the Best teamwork I have ever seen.. Be proud and Happy you Have each other as partners. And I hope you never take that for Granted because what I see is a Rarity..I look forward to seeing more of your videos..it is a pleasure to watch ❤..Stay Safe ✌️
LOL! Love the gradual step up from using 'what we had' to new shiny battery tools I might want to buy. Not knocking good tools. They make a big difference. But I think in time you'll be firing up an excavator to complete a new on ramp for your diy home build project.
Looking great so far, I love how the first thing you did was get a large range of tools and a tidy store for them. Will you be living in the van on the property for a long time or building a temporary accommodation before the stone house is completed?
Living off the grid is hard in a conventional manner, you need to be strong and hardworking for an all-day work. We just moved in to the countryside from the City and started a homestead. We don't have water from the district but we have a deep well. Our drinking water came from a spring which is a littlebit far from our house, phone signal is dead but we have starlink internet working. Life is not easy, we just started growing our own food so we need to wait months before we make food out of the garden, market is far and we only have 1 motorcycle to transport our supplies. But this is it, this is our goal. Living off the grid without losing our corporate jobs.
Awesome video showing just how far you’ve come already! Fantastic editing too btw 👍 Out of interest, what jobs did you both have before you left the rat race because Dan looks good at DIY to be able to sort the electrics out for the shower and at least one of you is pretty nifty with the computer techy stuff 🙂
You may not have had training, but you two are competent and very talented artist. The knowledge you’ve shown here has been amazing. It’s been stored away in your wonderful brains.❤😊
Awesome amount of progress you have made in such a short time. Can't wait for the next 3 months' progress. One thing though, you may want to put a black cover over the ibc to stop bacteria/algea growth in the water.
This has been great to watch and put me in a holiday mood -- happy and hopeful. Congrats on what you've accomplished for yourselves in so short a time!
Im a new subscriber from England, l have loved watching this video, we have a large garden but now my hubby has taken early retirement, yippee, hes built sheds, raised areas for my veg garden, we've revamped the whole garden, l love it too that we take our time in whatever we do. We're only young and am looking forward to what life holds in the future. What people forget is that life is as simple as you make it God bless you both
Great effort guys! Unfortunately the tarp doesn’t last two minutes in the hot sun and starts to shred. You need a pond liner heavy duty. You learn these things over time. There is such a tool as a pallet breaker don’t know how it works but it might be useful to you. Always cover your water to stop evaporation in that heat you won’t have much left. Best of luck both. Water is like liquid gold in those conditions.
Your house and land have potential. The two of you are obviously smart and creative and will have many opportunities to mold your property how you want. I love your bathroom and your house will be transformed in no time. Good luck and have fun. I wish when I was younger I did what you both are making happen!
The best thing I like about being off grid on my 60 acres is that it doesn’t matter if it takes me 3 days or 3 weeks to do something as there is no time restraints and as a retired service technician that is truly a blessing to work at your own pace. Good luck to you all!

This is not a negative comment, just an observation - going off grid is much easier if you have a lot of great tools available. Technology is very helpful. I applaud what you are doing.
We agree, technology is extremely helpful and we don’t think there’s anything wrong in using what we have available to us 😀
Technology is not a sin. I don't know where that idea came from. If you have it use it.
I agree, but it’s so much more better when you make do with what you have. Then you add a piece when you need it. This is so much better this way. God bless you both❤️
@@theoriginhomestead and plenty of money
Technology is helpful. But..how many, hom much..? Living off grid is a way to escape from technology around us.

Confidently return to rural communities, all of you in the cities, we come back or we destroy ourselves and the surface of the planet, choose wisely

That's so kind Tony, we absolutely love Portugal 💖
Peace and love to you both. You have achieved much in 3 months. Loving your journey, take care both of you and stay healthy.

Recap videos are hard. A lot of editing and a great deal of time is required. You did a GREAT job with this one!! Keep smiling, keep working and keep making the videos we like to see!
Laura's gentle voice works so well for the narration. You have the right to be pleased with what you have done so far.

That’s so sweet, we’re happy you enjoyed it David 🤗🌸
Absolutely beautiful - God bless you both!
Thank you so much! 💖
You need something on wheels such as a cart, dolly or hand truck to help you to move heavy and bulky things around your property. You can use use planks as temporary "walkways/driveways" to smoothe over rough patches. Keep going.👍
Thanks for the tips! 😀
Brilliant job .Well done you have both worked so well and achieved so much.So glad we came across your channel
Thanks for watching 😀
Absoloutely LOVING what you have done on your block!! HUGS to you both.
Welcome to Portugal! With all the rain in the last months you should have a good amount of stored water. Love and peace for all.
I love your videos. I'm in the USA and would like to go off grid here. Your camera work is really great!
Thank you very much!🌻
Very nice. Everyone should live like this. I've seen a lot of great solo projects, but I think it's real living when these couples venture out.
Thanks for the lovely comment hope you well x
You two are living my dream, love the videos ! good luck.
Hey Ivan nice to hear from you and so true we agree many people take on a piece of land that is too big. Thanks for sharing nice to hear ❤️
Epic journeys always start with humble beginnings.. Wishing you guys achieve greater heights !!
Thanks so much 😀
I put old plastic car mats and brick etc, under floor of my shed, painted with old paint even put varnish and oil to mix, can filter with window screen and large metal ceiling light cover with hole in center to drain good paint
Thanks for tip ❤
Sounds awesome! we hope you find the perfect place soon 😀
Great storytelling. Loved every moment.
Your energetic style is so important . Learn as you go !
100 percent Charlie thanks for watching
That is amazing hi there I'm from Greece I had transformed my grandfather's old barn in to a small home that I used to go and relax in the nature, very nice video bravo 👏
That sounds lovely, thanks for watching 😀
your journey is awesome, hard work dedication endurance and just the love of doing things simpler.. my hats off to you my respects take care be safe have fun life is an adventure and your living it!
Thanks Gary 🤗

Hey George what a lovely comment 💕
Your doing great learning and achieving all the time 👍
Thanks Lesley 😀
LOL! Love the gradual step up from using 'what we had' to new shiny battery tools I might want to buy. Not knocking good tools. They make a big difference. But I think in time you'll be firing up an excavator to complete a new on ramp for your diy home build project.
Thanks for watching anyway ❤

Thanks so much 😀
I' m portuguese & i love you both ,your voice is so Soothing.
Hey Terra really appreciate it
I'm unable to read your comment , sorry ! 😔
Love that you are living the dream so nice to hear your story ❤
Awesome video showing just how far you’ve come already! Fantastic editing too btw 👍 Out of interest, what jobs did you both have before you left the rat race because Dan looks good at DIY to be able to sort the electrics out for the shower and at least one of you is pretty nifty with the computer techy stuff 🙂
You may not have had training, but you two are competent and very talented artist. The knowledge you’ve shown here has been amazing. It’s been stored away in your wonderful brains.❤😊
❤❤
Awesome amount of progress you have made in such a short time. Can't wait for the next 3 months' progress. One thing though, you may want to put a black cover over the ibc to stop bacteria/algea growth in the water.
Thanks Kevin 😀
This has been great to watch and put me in a holiday mood -- happy and hopeful. Congrats on what you've accomplished for yourselves in so short a time!
Im a new subscriber from England, l have loved watching this video, we have a large garden but now my hubby has taken early retirement, yippee, hes built sheds, raised areas for my veg garden, we've revamped the whole garden, l love it too that we take our time in whatever we do. We're only young and am looking forward to what life holds in the future.
What people forget is that life is as simple as you make it
God bless you both
Welcome to the channel and nice to have you hear. Yes very wise words thanks for sharing ❤ ❤
Well done guys, you've achieved some great projects,
I lived in Alvor Portimao for 10 years,
Keep up the good work 👍💙
Thank you max 🌹
its amazing to see what men and women can do when they work together
💖
Loving your journey. You are living the life I wished I'd done when I was much younger. I look forward to seeing many more vlogs 😀
Water is like liquid gold in those conditions.
amazing what you guys have done!! you really inspired me !! keep up the good work!! i wish you all the best. And salute with that home made wine..
Thank you so much!😀
I'm from Portugal and I love it enjoy the sun and the food :)
Hey Pedro thanks for support and watching
Wishing you the very best to you both for your perseverance and support you give each other on your quest to have a home...Aho
Thank you so much!
Your house and land have potential. The two of you are obviously smart and creative and will have many opportunities to mold your property how you want. I love your bathroom
and
your house will be transformed in no time. Good luck and have fun. I wish when I was younger I did what you both are making happen!
Thanks Gregory really means a lot 😊 ❤
Easy to say but spend money on quality tools, if serviced they will last years. Great seeing you guys doing what your doing inspirational.
Thanks 👍
