I'm surprised you didn't Sonic's costumes. Granted there probably wouldn't be *that* much to talk about but I figured I mention them here. Sonic only had five costumes in Brawl with Smash 4 including the extra colors that stay to this day. His default appearance, a black costume, a gold costume, a green costume and a red costume. The black and red costumes had the colors changed slightly in Smash 4 with the red alt looking more orange while the black alt was made much darker. Eventually the "red" alt was made pure orange removing the original (and more accurate) reference the red alt carried. The reference the black alt had (according to the Smash Wiki at least before the colors deepened) was Sonic the Werehog before changing to Sonic X's Dark Sonic and Sonic the Fighters' 2P color palette with the darker colors. The red alt kept Sonic's iconic red shoes but gave him red wristbands. The reference is Sonic 2's Special Stage hand graphic after passing the checkpoint, in smash 4 onwards the red is made more orange which could be a reference to the graphic that shows up while playing as Tails alone in the special stages but I prefer the original red alt for Sonic, the orange color scheme just doesn't feel right.
Are we just going to gloss over the way Peach's Daisy alt switched from "straight up Daisy" in Melee to "Peach's outfit in yellow" afterwards? (Seriously, look it up. Some of the texture details change in Melee. The broach is probably the easiest to spot.)
@@dustymcwari4468 Exactly, I think a redhead Peach costume as a reference to her Super Mario Bros sprite would've been awesome, and also maybe Peach with black hair in her black and yellow outfit. Even her new golden dress that replaces her Daisy alt, maybe she could have had black or white hair in it.
@@2000fiona I think that too, and it would give that white red alt something else to go for, because the way it is right now it’s just the white alt, but with red stuff pasted in it, even as a Fire Peach it looks very lazy
@@dustymcwari4468 Exactly! And it's even worse in Ultimate than in Smash 4, because in 4, she at least wore red high heels like her fire form from 3D World, in Ultimate, they've changed them to be white heels, for some reason. So now, it looks even less like fire Peach and even more like her white costume. Best scenario would've been her having red hair and keeping the red heels in her fire costume (and having more details in red instead of white), and her white costume being replaced by her wedding outfit from Odyssey (not only based on it, I mean a complete redesign, with her wearing the strapless dress and Tiara instead of her crown)
It's kind of funny how both Samus and Peach had an alt that referenced another character, then that alt was replaced when said character joined the roster. Samus-Dark Samus Peach-Daisy
Man, I used to use the red Robin costume in smash 4, as I really like Anna. Shame they had to change only that one for them, and especially to something that doesn't even reference a character.
I think Evil Ryu had more palettes in the Street Fighter games he's in, but we probably should do with one for now. I was thinking Evil Ryu can be an echo fighter of Ryu, but Ken is already Ryu's echo fighter, and we probably do not need another echo fighter.
Bayonetta’s pink costume also became red in Ultimate, and her Jeanne costume is much less saturated than in Sm4sh Also Dedede’s cyan alt was originally white, with his mouth, gloves, and feet being paler
Actually, I'd like to correct that Anna (the character Robin's red costume was referencing) doesn't actually transcend time, but is more of a reoccurring joke that she has an extremely identical family which all look the same and have the same name. Pretty similar to all the Nurse Joy's from Pokemon. Fun fact, in the game Fire Emblem Awakening, you actually get to meet up with two different sisters of the playable Anna, who have a completely different blue and green colour schemes.
What's worse, Mario has a redundant Waluigi color but they canned his old Wario alt. I wonder what made them change what was already a perfect balance (Wario alt. Mario & Waluigi alt. Luigi) in Brawl & Smash 4 ?
@@tjh6678 yeah, it was pretty nice that Mario and Luigi had variants of their Wahs, now they just have a Waluigi color, and Luigi’s L is now the wrong color >:u

I really wish ZSS kept the purple obe, it was my favorite to use when I mained her in Brawl. I know it was replaced by the ZM/Fusion ending outfits in Ult and that it was just to match the gravity suit color since she was linked to suited Samus but I really miss it Heck, I miss the ZSS design from Brawl entirely. Zero Mission has a MUCH better design for the zero suit than other m does and I still think the change to her chest in Ult is weird since she's usually portrayed a bit bigger than that in the Metroid games. Also wish that she had the long hair she has in ZM/Fusion endings, because as is it's only a partial reference
I miss her purple and white Brawl costume too, and I also miss her pink outfit. I think she looks better wearing pink with red details, than burgundy with pink details.
Fantastic video, well edited, and clear you put a lot of time into looking at all the different costumes and changes. And yeah, Fire Mario. I was so excited when it was added, and so bummed when it was removed. The wedding Mario is neat, but... c'mon. Fire Mario.
My only guess for Robin's Anna alt being fucked up would be that for the Fighter Pass they just knew they would put in any FE character and Anna was a candidate with them only deciding on Byleth later once they knew enough about Three Houses, and as a result they wanted to make her red alt more unique. I mean, she would make the most sense as a new rep that isn't just the new main character since she's in most of the games
19:54 I always saw Wario's red biker outfit as a reference to fire Mario. It's not a completely one to one translation, but if biker Wario would get a fire flower, I'd imagine he'd look something like that.
Anna doesnt "transcend time" at all in FE games. It's quite litterally like Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny in the Pokemon Anime. they're all sisters, all called Anna, scattered throughout the FE universe
I'll die on this hill. The simple black tunics for the Links looked better than the later "Dark Link" reskins, and Shulk's alts looked better when his hair stayed the same for all of them. Sometimes it's better to just have a nice-looking palette than to make a blatant reference to something.
There’s no positive excuse for Dark Pit. Pit and Palutena were more than enough representation of Kid Icarus especially since 90% of the references are all to Uprising, source material or not, easily added doesn’t equal good. My name is because I’m a second generation line in my family, nothing else
I still like my idea that: for every character that has one or two model swaps as a custome (that is Mario, Ridley, Shulk, ZSS, Yoshi kinda, and probably more); move that one to slot 9, and if there's a second, move that one to slot 13. Then fill out the missing slot 8 (and slot 7) with an old recolour, or some more distinct recolour. Then add recolours for slots 10-12 (and 14-16). For characters with half with one model and half with another (that is Corrin, Robin, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and probably more), make the first model be slots 1-4, and the second be slots 9-12; then fill out 5-8 and 13-16 with some more distinct recolours. Then for characters like Peach, Bowser, and those without a second model; offer DLC models with 3 recolours each. - When you hold down the costume button; you can press up/down to quickly go between 1-8 and 9-16; so for male/female characters, you change colour with left/right and gender with up/down.
For Yoshi; move Crafted Yoshi to slot 9; add back black Yoshi to slot 8; add more crafted Yoshi colours to 10-12 for those who actually likes the design. For Wii Fit Trainer; since female is default, slots 1-4 will be the four current colours. Then why not make slots 5-8 based on the actual outfit from Wii Fit where she wears a sports bra? If ZSS can have that, so can the trainer. Make interesting colours like purple, black, pink and white. Male trainer needs a shirt where the blue and grey is swapped for better colours; and the shorts could also change colour. I don't know if it would work with the animations; but two ideas are the tennis/golf dress for slots 9-12, and the Mario Strikers outfit for slots 13-16. But it might look weird since the animations are expecting her to wear a dress. For Sonic; while his colours are better; having a Shadow option being black (and 3 recolours) and a Silver option being white (with 3 recolours) will make him look more distinct for mirror matches. For Bowser; Dry Bowser. White skeleton, black skeleton, red skeleton and purple skeleton. That's original Dry Bowser with some distinct colour options. Would also help mirror matches a lot.
For Yoshi they probably just wanted to promote Crafted World, and they just replaced the last alt (Black Yoshi) with Crafted Yoshi And Fire Mario, maybe they chose to replace the yellow (Wario Mario) and white (Fire Mario) with Builder and Wedding Mario respectively to promote Mario Maker and Odyssey, similar to how they may’ve replaced the blue with red overalls outfit (the Jumpman/Balloon Fight Mario) with the golf American flag patterned one in Sm4sh
I absolutely love the 64 and Melee Green alts for Fox. The red boots just look awesome with the jacket. Same with Link’s tunics. They just look so much better than some of the ones they got replaced with in ultimate. Oh and Sheik’s white alt in Melee.
Alright Aaronitmar, if you are reading this, then I want to let you know that Ness’ green costume is not a smash original. It is based on the color scheme of Everdred, the person who gave Ness the money for the Runaway Five to get rid of their contract, thus allowing the player to get to Threed.
One not mentioned here is White Kirby, only in melee. White Kirby went on to show up in Kirby Air Ride, but in Brawl onward it was changed to obviously the very grey monochrome colour.
So, a few things. Let's clobber them in bullet points: 1) Fox's costume for Wolf is still included in Ultimate, contrary to what you stated in the video. 2) Marth's purple costume in Ultimate isn't quite the same as the one in Smash 4, but it's very close. Smash 4's armor is blue while the cape is purple, but the Ultimate costume has the upper armor and cape BOTH purple. This same costume has a pale blue tunic akin to the scrapped Smash Brawl costume. Neat, huh? 3) Red Robin's new hairstyle might point to Khan Flavia(from Fire Emblem: Awakening) being the idea behind the outfit, albeit VERY loosely. Khan Flavia had blonde hair, red armor with white detailings(like I said, VERY loosely), and her starting weapon was a sword, which she was exceedingly efficient with. It might be a reference to this character, or just a Smash Ultimate original. Who knows? 4) Only bringing this up because your wording might confuse people, but Robin's golden alt is not a reference to Lissa, nor any character from Awakening. Lissa's reference is actually used for one of Lucina's costumes. This Robin alt might be a reference to someone who is in a Fire Emblem game that came before Awakening, but that's not as likely as it being a Smash Original.
Pikachu's completely Smash Original cowboy hat only appeared in Melee. This was scrapped from the Super Smash Bros. series by his new headband in Brawl onward.
22:48 this is why i don't like full characters as alternate skins for other fighters, not only does it feel cheap they don't have their own spot on the roster, hell not even on the banner, but it just takes away cool skins from the original fighter too.
Mario's blue & red costume (Ice Mario), white & red costume (Fire Mario), Wario costume, Yoshi's black color (not intended for a racist joke), Little Mac's eight other colors, Wolf's black and brown skin color (not intended for a racist joke AGAIN), etc. These are all colors and costumes I wish weren't scrapped from the game and just simply stayed.
Green Donkey Kong and Green Kirby were just Hue edits. Those colors weren't a choice in Smash64 but was needed for Team Battle. So it was a quick way to get the character to be green which is why Donkey Kong's skin was green.
I kind of understand the reasoning behind cutting the fire Mario alt, but it feels weird to not see it in the game. Especially when Luigi, Peach and Rosalina have their fire alts.
The purple/dark blue color for ness is actually a reference to the sprite used for his younger self (also a sprite used for a kid in polestar preschool)
Video suggestion: Remember how in smash 4 there were custom special attacks for each character? A video about possible custom specials for the newcomers, dlc, and returning characters would be pretty interesting.
The biggest loss, imo, was Pit's cool blue costume. That was my go to every time I played him. I don't even touch him anymore because I am aesthetically hurt if I do.
the multicoloured pit costume is a reference to pandora's labyrinth in uprising i think, and weird to exclude dark pit when he got some notable costume swaps between 4 and ultimate
Fox’s orange costume deserves an honorable mention. The costume is based on the jumpsuit Falco Lombardi wears in Star Fox 64. It got replaced by his red costume, but it continues to reference Falco, as his outfit is red in both Star Fox Assault and Command. While Fox also wears red in Assault’s multiplayer mode when he’s the player 1, in the story mode, he wears his typical green. Both costumes returned in Sm4sh.
Just like Link, Young Link has a black tunic in Melee that never gets used again. Young Link's return in Ultimate gives him a full Dark Link costume to match the other Links.

I think the red kinda represented knuckles idk sonic’s costumes were I guess smash originals because again sonic was a rushed character in smash brawl
Are we just going to gloss over the way Peach's Daisy alt switched from "straight up Daisy" in Melee to "Peach's outfit in yellow" afterwards? (Seriously, look it up. Some of the texture details change in Melee. The broach is probably the easiest to spot.)
Not the only change from melee. If I remember correctly either her blue or white alts had pantyhose
Yeh, her alts in Melee used to be more interesting overall, I also disliked that only one alt changed hair color and the rest kept the default blonde
Every time I see someone talk about Link's yellow tunic they never say anything about Pipit
That was my thought as well
It's kind of funny how both Samus and Peach had an alt that referenced another character, then that alt was replaced when said character joined the roster.
Samus-Dark Samus
Peach-Daisy
Man, I used to use the red Robin costume in smash 4, as I really like Anna. Shame they had to change only that one for them, and especially to something that doesn't even reference a character.
Yeah, I'm not really into modern FE, but I'll take the mighty Jalapeño wizard over Blonde #586182668199737 any day.
It resembles one of the Thracia characters
Red Robin, yum!
I've always wanted to do that.
Yeah, I would definitely want Fire Mario to return. I would also get rid of Ryu's purple color and give him an Evil Ryu color instead.
I love purple Ryu :c
I think Evil Ryu had more palettes in the Street Fighter games he's in, but we probably should do with one for now. I was thinking Evil Ryu can be an echo fighter of Ryu, but Ken is already Ryu's echo fighter, and we probably do not need another echo fighter.

I'm still pissed they removed the Fire Mario alt but kept the dumb Waluigi one.
Yeah Luigi already had that alt why does mario need it too?
@@jahmerecrooms3162 And they removed the yellow L on his hat too which was also dumb.
Luigi should of kept the yellow L upsidedown, and made marios Waluigi costume fire
The two skins from classic wario were my favorite skins from wario and I was very disappointed when they were cut
Olimars dark costume was also very good, and again, very disappointed when it was cut
I much miss red overall mario alt. I grew up playing melee and favourited that alternate costume out of all alternate costumes in the game
Kinda wanna see Aaron do a non Smash video
Also has anyone noticed that whenever directs happen, he only uploads his reactions to the smash trailers?
I really wish ZSS kept the purple obe, it was my favorite to use when I mained her in Brawl. I know it was replaced by the ZM/Fusion ending outfits in Ult and that it was just to match the gravity suit color since she was linked to suited Samus but I really miss it
Heck, I miss the ZSS design from Brawl entirely.
I wish nintendo just makes DLC customes for everyone 😪😪
That'd be rad ngl
Full alts would be awesome obviously but even just new (or returning) colors would also be cool
Fantastic video, well edited, and clear you put a lot of time into looking at all the different costumes and changes. And yeah, Fire Mario. I was so excited when it was added, and so bummed when it was removed. The wedding Mario is neat, but... c'mon. Fire Mario.

I was just thinking, "What if there's another costume origin video?"
...and here we are
Just wanted to let you know, you forgot to mention Mario's inverted color scheme from 64 and Melee also references him in Donkey Kong Arcade.
19:54
I always saw Wario's red biker outfit as a reference to fire Mario. It's not a completely one to one translation, but if biker Wario would get a fire flower, I'd imagine he'd look something like that.
I mained Air Mac in Sm4sh, and I was disappointed to see that my favorite costume was cut. I liked the all-blue color scheme.
18:14 why does Dark Pit make me wanna play Tomodachi Life
The loss of inverted Mario is the greatest, but I also want "Wolfen" Wolf back.
Anna doesnt "transcend time" at all in FE games. It's quite litterally like Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny in the Pokemon Anime. they're all sisters, all called Anna, scattered throughout the FE universe
I have a suggestion for waiting the final fighter for costumes and classic routes. How about the victory theme origins
Mario invert alt was cool cause early on he had blue shirt, red overalls in old artwork so its a nice reference
I wasn't prepared for just how hot that dark Zelda color was 😍

Pikachu's Smash 64's colored hats arent wizard hats but their party hats
The ones that I would like see returned are Fire Mario, Shiny Mewtwo and Crowned Jigglypuff because are Beautifuls : )
I'll die on this hill. The simple black tunics for the Links looked better than the later "Dark Link" reskins, and Shulk's alts looked better when his hair stayed the same for all of them. Sometimes it's better to just have a nice-looking palette than to make a blatant reference to something.
I liked both of Pit's alternate costumes that got merged. Overall, I liked alts with more saturated colours
Bet you really love that his Dark Pit colour got life brought to it, huh? It wasn’t like it was a totally lazy and obvious bias shill too…
@@OTHERMRBABCOCK Who pissed in your Cheerios?

There’s no positive excuse for Dark Pit. Pit and Palutena were more than enough representation of Kid Icarus especially since 90% of the references are all to Uprising, source material or not, easily added doesn’t equal good.
My name is because I’m a second generation line in my family, nothing else
No one asked for your opinion on Dark Pit.
Still don’t understand why Black Yoshi and Fire Mario were removed 🤨. Makes me wish they went beyond eight alts for characters
I miss the alts
For Yoshi they probably just wanted to promote Crafted World, and they just replaced the last alt (Black Yoshi) with Crafted Yoshi
And Fire Mario, maybe they chose to replace the yellow (Wario Mario) and white (Fire Mario) with Builder and Wedding Mario respectively to promote Mario Maker and Odyssey, similar to how they may’ve replaced the blue with red overalls outfit (the Jumpman/Balloon Fight Mario) with the golf American flag patterned one in Sm4sh

Let's clobber them in bullet points:
1) Fox's costume for Wolf is still included in Ultimate, contrary to what you stated in the video.
Bowser's all-brown alt is a reference to Boom-Boom's in-game sprite in Super Mario Bros. 3.
i miss the daisy alt
its not fair cause daisy gets a pink dress but peach just has to SUFFER
(Not to be racist) Nintendo replaced Yoshi’s black alt,
*what are they trying to say*
...why would those be racist jokes...?

Green Donkey Kong and Green Kirby were just Hue edits. Those colors weren't a choice in Smash64 but was needed for Team Battle. So it was a quick way to get the character to be green which is why Donkey Kong's skin was green.
I kind of understand the reasoning behind cutting the fire Mario alt, but it feels weird to not see it in the game. Especially when Luigi, Peach and Rosalina have their fire alts.
They should had keep Fire Mario and get rid of that crappy black and white costume
The purple/dark blue color for ness is actually a reference to the sprite used for his younger self (also a sprite used for a kid in polestar preschool)
It really annoys me that Mario’s Wario colored costume was taken out of Ultimate but they kept his Waluigi costume. Just... why?
Fun fact: Cloud's 3rd Advent Children costume had a green tint in Sm4sh, which was changed to be the normal black that's on his default AC costume.

They won’t!
I like the theory that Pichu from Melee evolved into Brawl's Pikachu. They didn't remove Pichu, it just received lots of love
But what happened to the original Smash Pikachu?

Fox’s orange costume deserves an honorable mention. The costume is based on the jumpsuit Falco Lombardi wears in Star Fox 64. It got replaced by his red costume, but it continues to reference Falco, as his outfit is red in both Star Fox Assault and Command. While Fox also wears red in Assault’s multiplayer mode when he’s the player 1, in the story mode, he wears his typical green. Both costumes returned in Sm4sh.
A moment of silence for Fire Mario and Black Yoshi.
