James Bond would've been unleashing a Pandora's Box of completely wild choices later down the line and I don't know if that would be a good or bad thing for the series.
It would've been terrible. Leave the non-video game characters to Smash Flash.

I can see that. Considering snake opened a can of worms which has lead to many great and terrible choices for the smash cast, I can see how fucking insane it can get if Bond was in.
Instead of too many fire emblem characters we would have too many firearm characters
Hypothetically, if we were to get non-video game characters in Smash, I would want them to still be characters that are significant to the history of gaming in some way; such as Popeye (the original intended star of what would become Donkey Kong, plus his spinach power-up inspired Pac-Man's power pellets), James Bond (the star of the first majorly successful FPS on console), and yes, even Goku. (with Dragon Ball, alongside Fist of The North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, heavily inspiring the fighting genre as we know it today)
Characters such as Shrek or SpongeBob, who haven't had any serious impact on gaming history, would NOT fit the bill.
There’s plenty of characters that could count as “Nows or Nevers” that’s what I call them. Midna being a contender for Brawl when Twilight Princess was the hot new Zelda game around the time of Brawl.
Every time a new fire emblem game comes out, we will have another FE rep in game using that logic...
I'm surprised she was cut, fuckin travesty. We ain't had a new original zelda character since Zelda and Shiek from melee every other has been a clone of link or just Ganondorf being bad Falcon

In a alternate universe: Ness and Roy in melee, Puff in Brawl and Dark pit in smash 4 would all be on this list
Probably Sonic for Brawl as well since the reason he doesn't have a varied moveset and had an incredibly small appearance in the final scene of Subspace is because Sega didn't get back to Nintendo with the okay until it was almost too late.
Actually Lucina and Dr.Mario too since they were also originally costumes like Alph

Remember, if James Bond was added to Smash, That would open a WHOLE new can of worms for the community to predict characters. Like "Guys I saw a leak that the Ghostbusters are joining Smash!" Or Iron Man, or any other characters from shows and movies.

combine that with the alternate timeline where JK accepted Nintendo's proposal for a Zelda-like Harry Potter game at the expense of gaining exclusive rights to the series, and we really have a scenario where there are no HP movies or theme parks, but he has legit chances of getting into Smash Bros.
Not just that but also in Polls and stuff,Most Highly Requested Gaming Characters would be overshadowed by Characters from Shows and Movies

I cannot take credit for this, I simply collected information from the internet and made it into a video.

Nintendo: Here are four reasons James Bond couldn't be in Smash, a couple of which (the movie license and the actor's likeness) have been issues that have sunk far larger projects than a potential character in a fighting game.

To be fair I'm not sure if this is as much of an issue now. Mortal Kombat 11 has used the likenesses actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone for their iconic characters. I do know however that the James Bond rights can get very tricky.
It's weird kind of Nintendo logic to even consider James Bond for smash in the first place.
Not to mention the guns could very well have actually been problematic, since the rating board standards were different back then.
There's also no guarantee they could've worked just like Joker's.

The only thing that sounds neat about Excitebike is if every stage had upward slopes just for him, but I generally hate the idea of characters that are only there to represent the ancient times like "R.O.tor and Gyro Spam" and of course Duc Khunt. Bike might actually be the one that I ended up liking the concept of... (Ice Climbers are okay at least.)
How was Captain Falcons moveset made? i never played f zero but i know its a racing game so was his personality and moveset made just for smash? so i can def see them dong something similar with an excite bike rider

15:52 The story behind Alph’s inclusion is interesting and I’m glad it was included in the video, but I don’t think Alph qualifies as a “scrapped character” since he still made it in as a playable fighter in 3DS/Wii U and Ultimate. I’d say it’s more of a “role repurpose.”
I think it still somewhat qualifies, because Alph would have been a character with mechanical differences (I'm guessing the Rock Pikmin, with some kind of shield-breaking property).
I wish all the Pikmin protags could be alternates, or at least on different teams

I have watched a dozen of these ''scrapped fighters'' videos, but honestly, whenever Aaron picks up a subject it is such a breath of fresh air. I love how in depth he goes and how he's able to put such a new spin on an overdone subject. Great as always!

Fun fact: classic sonic was originally going to be sonic's desgin with a more in series moveset but due to time constraint it went the other way. Modern sonic with a megadrive focused moveset

"Classic Sonic" wasn't a thing until 2011, there wasn't an established difference before Generations, there was just Sonic in differing artstyles. And the Sonic in the game itself doesn't really have a Megadrive-focused moveset: he uses mostly attacks from Sonic The Fighters (an arcade game), original attacks that use Sonic's main abilities and a couple individual references to both the classic games (like the spin charge) and the Adventure games (like the other spin dash and the homing attack)

Easily one of the darkest days in Smash history. Not just because of what happened, but because of the aftermath. Square/FF7 fanbois are cancer incarnate. Always were, always will be.
I know it's included in your source Pastebin, but it would've been nice to give a verbal shout-out to the Definitive Unused Fighter List in Smash/SG. It's a resource that Source Gaming and I are committed to keeping current so videos like this can exist and so everyone can have the proper information! Since it's hard to directly update videos after they've been published DUFL will always have the most up-to-date information even years after this video has been out!

Rex hurts the most for me personally, because he was so f*cking close to getting in, now he's missed his probably one and only chance of joining the roster.
At least his strong presence in Pyra and Mythra's moveset and animations help make up for it a bit.

Banjo and James Bond weren’t actually considered. People just assumed they were because of what Sakurai had said about Rare characters in Melee
If any of these scrapped fighters have the chance to be a new character in Ultimate, I think the most likely one is Ayumi Tachibana. The only thing really hold her back in Melee was the fact that her games were not released outside of Japan. But now, not only are they available world wide, but even remastered for the Switch! Not only is her limitation gone, but it would be an easy way for Nintendo to make money by advertising her in Smash since she's a 1st party character. They've done it before (biggest examples being Corrin & Byleth), so if they don't do it here, they'd just be leaving money on the table.

@@dannybright8708 So? There are several instances of franchises not having a new game in years yet they’re still in Smash regardless. At least with Rhythm Heaven, the last console it was on was on the 3DS and the last mention of the franchise was the latest and the previous 2 Wariowares.

I think out of all of them that still haven't made it in, it has to Geno and especially Dixie, I understand Geno, but it feels weird Dixie still is not in it, like I feel she would make the DK part of the roster feel complete
I think because there was more demand for Krool, people only really started pushing for Dixie when he got in.

@@josh6453 Lucina is actually a tiny bit different than her idol. Marth has attacks that are strongest at the tip, whereas Lucina deals the same damage every time.

Lots of people say that, "I wanna see their moveset" but that's the whole reason I hate some characters - their moveset was made up on the spot because they had no potential for one. I don't want another Pac-Man throwing arcade sprites of his mortal enemies at his opponents, or Duck Hunt summoning random outlaws to shoot people... even R.O.B. had more move potential to begin with.

Rex and Springman were honestly my most wanted characters going into Ultimate so I'm glad we ended up just getting better versions of those wants in Fighter's Pass 2. So now my dream want from the scrapped list is Ayumi thanks to FDC finally getting localized this year; I don't know how Sakurai would pull off an Adventure game based moveset but I'd like to see the team try.
To be honest I would like to see in future games Spring Man as a Min Min echo and Rex appear in the background of Pyra/Mythra like Pokemon Trainer at least

Even tho theres no confirmation of this. I think a rep from Monster Hunter would be another scrapped character. As how we got Rathalos and theres an entire area with monster hunter theme in world of light.
I read somewhere that a Monster Hunter was originally going to be the final character of the first fighter pass and they were going to be the originator of the weapon swapping mechanic, but for some reason they were scrapped mid-development and their assets were repurposed for Byleth. I can't find the source, but I believe it because many of Byleth's animations look like they're ripped straight from Monster Hunter.
@@tylermacgregor1320 I heard something similar, but it said Monster Hunter was planned for BASE roster but got scrapped. It also said Sora was gonna be the last character in the fighter’s pass but got scrapped because negotiations with Disney fell through. Sakurai and the Smash team then just took what they had made for Monster Hunter and used it to make Byleth.
EDIT: Welp, looks like they worked something out in the end.
I would’ve loved to see any characters we eventually got in an earlier game; Bowser in 64, Wario in Melee, PAC-MAN in Brawl, or Chrom in Smash 4. Those are just some examples but it just would be neat to see what they would look like in the different styles of each game.
When I was young playing Melee I think it was on Flat Zone specifically, the characters' shadows would be polygonal and I would look at the shadow and visualize how they would've looked in 64 (specifically Mewtwo, really wanted to see him in it) by filling in the details mentally. Of course if Bowser WAS in 64 I'd much rather him have that one silly model... which is why I love the Smash Remix romhack!
I think Ayumi Tachibana in Smash would've been so cool! I hope Phoenix Wright is the last character in Fighters Pass 2 as sort of an homage to that original idea.

@@PeruvianPotato If you haven't seen him in action in UMvC3 or Project X Zone 2, then I recommend you check them out. He throws papers, points at people, sneezes on them, trips and it trips his opponents too, calls on a giant judge to slam his gavel on them, summons his assistant as a shield, breaks defenses with his Magatama... but above all, he shouts "Objection!" and indicts everyone in court for their crimes.
If Sakurai and team really want him in Smash, they already have inspiration. I'm just not as hopeful as most other fans. If he even gets to be a Mii costume, that's already a huge win imo.

@@PeruvianPotato They've managed to create and program a fully constructed moveset to a potted plant with fangs, a plastic Nintendo peripheral toy that operates on its own (sort of), a 2D LCD man with limited animation, a mannequin-esque yoga instructor, and an inflatable living balloon-like creature who's singing that can make people fall sleep. In other words none of the them look like fighting game character potential and yet they managed to pull it off. Therefore the Smash Bros. developers can clearly come up with a moveset for practically for *any* video game character.
I would’ve love to see Takamaru and Balloon Fighter as full fighters in smash since their games appeared on Nintendoland.

The most likely reason why the forbidden 7 characters in brawl were cut was time constraints. Sakurai even said that he had a lot of characters planned, but were scrapped due to time constraints. It also didn't help that those characters were low priority. Going by what Sakurai said and the unused files in Brawl, I'm assuming it's the forbidden 7 and maybe even more is what Sakurai is referring to. Aside from Dixie Kong, there has been sources back during the leak group on why Mewtwo and Roy were cut aside from being low priority and time constraints. Roy was cut due to not only being a low priority character, but he was also cut because there were more interesting choices than him and due to only certain amount of time that the development team had. As for Mewtwo, well when he was ported over from Melee, he was pretty glitchy and filled with technical issues. This could explain why in Smash 4 Mewtwo had different hitboxes with the same moveset. Because of Mewtwo's poor design from Melee, the team even could not easily recreate Mewtwo using Melee assets unlike the other characters from Melee. Sure, they could've created from scratch, but I'm guessing the team thought it wasn't worth it or wasn't motivated enough. After all, he is a difficult character to develop. Plus, it doesn't help the fact that 60% of the development was focused on the SSE. Still since Mewtwo and Roy were beloved characters, they stayed in longer during development than the other 5. It just so happened that certain circumstances push them out of the running. Again, I would take this grain of salt because it's is NOT confirmed, but it is interesting to think about. But, we can definitely say that the forbidden 7 were cut due to time and how the development was stacking up.

I like how the three characters in the thumbnail each represent one of the three ways fighters have been scrapped:
Geno = Characters who were considered, but seemingly dropped before any real work was done on them.
Dixie Kong = Characters who were worked on, but never actually made it to the final roster. Remnants of their code can often still be found in the game files of the retail release.
Dr. Mario = Characters who made official debuts as fighters, but were cut from the final roster of at least one subsequent Smash game (Brawl, in Dr. Mario's case.)

I would still love to see a new Mysterious Murasame Castle game, and being able to play as Takamaru in Smash also would be cool.
James Bond was likely kicked out for breaking the rule that a character must originate from a video game franchise.
As the video says, that was part of the reason.
The realistic guns, movie rights and the Rare licensing were also what ultimately scrapped him.
Geno is the saddest missing character.
Also Dixie would have been alot of fun

I remember back in 6th grade, my friend and I would always talk Smash 64 and we'd try to guess who would be in the sequel whenever it would come out. My wish and still to this day wish for the Double Dragons. Their move sets are basically Smash ready and there'd be two characters with a simple color pallet swap. My friend would try to get Paperboy in the game but I always objected because I just couldn't picture a dude on a bike fighting other people...Sadly it doesn't look like Billy and Jimmy Lee will ever make it to Smash.

Actually it's not even seven in any way unless you count Toon Zelda and Toon Sheik separately, but they're supposed to be a duo same as Plusle/Minun.
James Bond of course was tied to the Movie Publisher, so of course not unless Nintendo organized something.
Banjo Kazooie, we know that RARE was with Nintendo at that point in time but when Melee was released, RARE was looking for a buyer and when Nintendo refused to buy the company 100% (they had 49% to 51% at the time) then it was Microsoft who in 2002 brought RARE to own 100% of the company.
It was a miracle for Banjo Kazooie to even be in Smash Ultimate as a DLC character.
The main thing I’m taking away from this video is that for some reason the smash development team is constantly desperate to add more Ice Climber-like characters. I wonder why that is?
It is (or was, as of recent games) focused on nintendo history. It wouldn't be very good at doing that if it was just a bajillion characters from Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc, woud it? Just how I feel on the manner

But the very big difference is that Popo and Nana are very similair with each other. You cannot force other duo teams because those characters are actullay very unique which means NIntendo have to spend double fighter budget to do one fighter, that isn't a good idea. Why not do two independent fighters to appeal more fans?

Apparently Square wanted Cloud to be DLC again for Ultimate and Sakurai just barely managed to nab him, which is why there's so little FF7 content in the base game (i.e. there are entire Street Fighter/Castlevania/Metal Gear sections in World of Light but you just fight Cloud at some random point in the Zelda area)
Yeah. If the next Smash game manages to get Cloud and Sephiroth back, I have no doubts that Square Enix will push for more DLC content after.

You seemed to have overlooked that initially Leif From Fire Emblem 5 was going to debut in Melee. However, he was ultimately replaced by Roy as a second FE rep. Moreover, a Marth palette swap resembling Leif (i.e. The white alt) is present in Melee as a result
I didn't hear this on your list, but Sakurai was hearing a lot of demand to include Saki Amamiya from Sin and Punishment. To quote the Smash Dojo blog from Brawl, "He rivals just about any main character. There were many requests from users for his inclusion, and he IS pretty cool, so I did what I could to include him."
I lowkey wish we got Alucard instead of the Belmonts. Sure, he'd be another anime swordfighter (doubly redundant for his resemblance to Sephiroth) but Symphony of the Night is such a masterpiece that I'd love to have seen it get represented in the roster.

Kind of surprised that you didn't bring up Sakurai's alternative choices for FF reps in Smash 4. Knowing he has said if he couldn't get Tetsuya Nomura's permission for using Cloud. Then he would've personally went with Terra or Bartz instead. Though at the same time Nomura brought up Noctis and Lightning and initially thought Sakurai wanted them thinking they were relevant at the time. There was an interview about this.

My theory for why Tetra was called Toon Sheik, is that perhaps she and Toon Zelda meant to share a spot on the character select screen, and the player would have been able to freely switch between the two in a manner similar to Zelda and Sheik.

It's interesting to see what could have been, personally I would have liked to have tried out all the scrapped characters.
There was so much more to the early games than expected! The Brawl characters especially bring a lot into question...

As much as I would have loved to have seen Banjo and Kazooie in Melee, I am glad we finally got to see them get in as Ultimate DLC. As for fighters that never made the cut after their initial scrapping, the ones I would have most wanted to see make it in are Dixie Kong, Krystal, Decidueye and Slime.
I’d guess if Alph had been an echo fighter it would’ve boiled down to different Pikmin since Pikmin 3 introduced some new ones. So maybe he would’ve had Rock pikmin that hit harder or do more shield damage, and the flying pikmin recovery while Olimar kept Pikmin chain. Just a guess.

That original vote list is really interesting. Toad and Mew at least appear in Smash games via Peach/Daisy and Pokeballs respectively. James Bond is the only one in the top 10 that has no appearance in the Smash series.
If a “4th party” character was ever chosen, I would hope it’s Bond. Just given the legacy and how out of left field it would be. Characters like Goku and Shrek have been mentioned so often, it might not even be that shocking if they ever did make it (which I don’t think will ever happen IMO)
Imagine if Bond is Ultimate's last fighter then Crash, Robotinik, Sora, Doom Slayer and Rayman are mii's and Sakurai just looks at the screen and says "This is Smash's last fighter, thanks!"
The Smash trailer starts with Snake looking through the scope of his rocket launcher and zooms in on Bond, who does the iconic "shooting the camera" pose and then the world implodes
More problem is from contracts, tho. It's not possible to invite a non-videogame character (like Yogcast in SEGA Allstars), but every single media license is a new deal with more cost. Don't talk it like it's free or supermarket discount.

If memory serves, for the Final Fantasy rep, Sakurai had considered Terra and Bartz. Terra for her prominent SNES character status, and Bartz because Sakurai thought the class mastery/change system would be interesting. But ultimately picked Cloud because let's be real that makes the most sense. I dunno where I saw that interview though... So it could have been made up.
I'm sure the community will be able to make full custom character mods for every conceivable character with time
When smash ultimate came out, I wanted Decidueye to be in the roster rather than Incinaroar. Hearing that it was a scrapped idea makes it hurt more
It's funny cause nobody still likes Incineroar, the owl could have become the new Lucario / Greninja in terms of popularity
But hey that one kid there is hope now that the new recent fully evolved grass type starter Pokémon Rillaboom from the current generation Galar aka Gen 8. With Rillaboom it could make up after Decidueye didn’t make it to smash ultimate.
