This is the race that made me a fan. I remember watching the final lap and my jaw dropped upon seeing the crash and the finish. It was too much high drama not to be addicted to it. I am still trying to get over the danger aspects though. The idea of seeing people die while participating in a sport bothers me.
Great to see at Goodwood Festival of Speed so many historic Indy 500 cars in the paddock and on the hillclimb to celebrate your 100 years of racing. Awesome sight of the marching band and 33 car starting grid, one to always remember
I was there! i wasn't watchin it on tv, i really was there! my dad goes there every year, im going again this year, its much more fun when you are there then when you are watchin it on TV...... :)
Im a huge NASCAR fan, but im starting to get into openwheel racing, and im still learning about it all. IRL and F1, at first i wasnt into it very much, but its actually pretty cool. I dont know why people diss this stuff. its some good racing sometimes.

Final de película, increíble. Esto solo puede pasar en la Indy 500. Saludos desde Perú. Freddy Blanco Lázaro
@recked14 haha No other race will compare to Indy. Ever. The fact that Nascar kept the green flag out when Earnhardt Jr. was leading is a joke. Too bad he couldn't win with Nascar's help, both National Guard cars bit the dust that day. One of the best Indy 500's I have ever seen, amazing. It never disappoints.
@Tyler83Mr Indi500 , monaco grand prix and Le mans 24h are considered the 3 greatest motoring events in a year, even though i personally dont like this track
These cars only have 600hp but hit 230MPH (370kph) at Indy, that gives you some perspective on how little downforce they are using compared to F1, they are pushing it to the limit on grip on every corner just for speed on the straights
If there was an apron then Kimball could have easily have ducked in there and JR would have won it..bring it back! But still that would have been just another 500 finish, this on the other hand is one of the 500 finishes ever! Congratulations to Wheldon, Herta and Schmidt. Also MAKE WHELDON A FULL TIME DRIVER!!!
@kgb474 It is true that Kimball could not have been in a worse place at a worse time for the leaders to come up on him, and he was going surprisingly slow to be on the race line and the leaders coming up behind him on the last lap. It is also true that drivers had been going too far up the track all day at this corner. This should have meant that Hildebrand would have had all the warning not to go high here. The big difference: Hildabrand had a race to win or lose. :-(
good clip, but they shoulda showed Dario's and JR's strategy pit and also showed Dixon and Dario slowing down toward the end. That is why JR got the lead.
How can a rookie possibly be upset to go run there first Indy 500, get to start 12 in front of competitive teams like Briscoe, Castroneves, and any Andretti car, get rookie of the race, get to lead, and finish on the podium!?!?!?.... Like that.......
@sammieboj Yeah, but we're talking about good racing. i.e--passing, side-by-side action, and overall close racing. If it were a competition of over-priced, overrated, and unexciting racing, F1 would take the cake; no doubt.
I was here and when I saw JR Hildebrand take the white flag i though he was gonna win.... the i saw his wrecked car slide passed me..... anything can happen
@gurlsingerfan I guess we could say 1 rookie + 1 rookie at closing lap = major missed opportunity. But I was rooting for J.R., I guess that is why I was disappointed, (I wasn't beating up on him, even if it sounded like it, I was playing the WHY game (which in auto racing is often somewhat pointless. oh well, better luck to him next year. :-)
Remember some names...Kevin Cogan, Scott Goodyear, Michael Andretti...J.R. Hidebrand. He will live with this one until he wins Indy, or until the end of his days, whichever comes first. And he will never have the chance to be a rookie who won Indy again. But the question remains, HOW, WHY, WHY, WHY? Why did he have to go up high, why did he have to pass a lapped car in THE LAST CORNER. People say Indy was exciting this year. I saw it as disappointing, sad and non-sensical.
What a crappy commentator. "Wow. Look at that move. Wow". What a tool. SO much better these days with Eddie Cheever, Townsend Bell, Scott Goodyear, Paul Tracy, a completely different level of understanding of the race, the mechanical issues, the strategy, and they are also very funny at times
So the reason all but 6 drivers race had nothing to do with the fact their poor little tyres couldn't handle 12 little degrees of banking at two thirds of the speed of what the IndyCar drivers do? I must have been watching a different race, as in my one, about 35-40% of the oval is used...
@sammieboj F1 has become so boring since the V10-era ended. Nowadays IndyCar is much more fun to watch, I like the variety with both ovals and road courses, and the tickets are much cheaper lol. F1 is all about money, IC still let talents drive. Take F1 driver Maldonado for example, he sucks, but Williams keep him around because he has some south american oil sponsor that gives the team a shit load of money. I started watching NASCAR this year, and I have to say it's currently better than F1.
@96texan It is. ever since Tom Carnagie retired, this guy took over and just ruined the commentary. He just likes to hear himself talk because he repeats everything like 4 times
To think Dan led only one lap, the last, the one that counts. Like his friend Jenson Button in Canada the same year. RestInPeaceDW
This was the first Indy 500 I watched and I've watched the Indy 500 ever since, and even went there in 2019
R.i.p dan
I remember watching this race and feeling so sick for JR Hildebrand.
This is the race that made me a fan. I remember watching the final lap and my jaw dropped upon seeing the crash and the finish. It was too much high drama not to be addicted to it. We'll never forget you Dan Weldon we'll miss you Indy champion🏎🏁🌹
R.I.P. Dan...Indy is just not going to be the same without you =(
100 years of racing is the step into historical journey🏁
2011. My favourite Indianapolis Indy 500 of all time apart from many others.
I know a lot of my friends have wondered why I'm such a huge auto racing fan. This is why. The last thirty laps were so tense.
The Indy 500 will NEVER be a night race. I highly doubt lights are ever even installed at IMS.
What a race, so much passing...so much action....oh man!!!!
Hidebrand made a new fan after this, feel so bad for him. Dude is gonna be an awesome driver later in his career, no doubt about it.
Great to see at Goodwood Festival of Speed so many historic Indy 500 cars in the paddock and on the hillclimb to celebrate your 100 years of racing. Awesome sight of the marching band and 33 car starting grid, one to always remember
Outstanding race this year. All sorts of drama and this race had everything this sport needed.
I was there! i wasn't watchin it on tv, i really was there! my dad goes there every year, im going again this year, its much more fun when you are there then when you are watchin it on TV...... :)
best indy 500 yet
this was one crazy race esp. on the last lap! JR Hildebrand must be sad and angry at the same time.
With a long night of work, I had fallen asleep for half the race, but was pleasantly abruptly woken up for the finish by the commentators.
Congratulations Takuma!!!!
Im a huge NASCAR fan, but im starting to get into openwheel racing, and im still learning about it all. IRL and F1, at first i wasnt into it very much, but its actually pretty cool. I dont know why people diss this stuff. its some good racing sometimes.

When you go there, they sell you headphones so you can here your drivers communication with thier team. Its really cool!!!

What a surreal finish!!!
Great RACE. HAPPY TO BE THERE. THIS IS GOOD COVERAGE. HAPPY ONW HUNDRED BIRTHDAY iNDIANAPOLIS 500
@Tyler83Mr Indi500 , monaco grand prix and Le mans 24h are considered the 3 greatest motoring events in a year, even though i personally dont like this track
was my first race - awesome! Can't wait to go again.
Unbelieveable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
was there, it was excellent!!

classic race
among the most exciting race of all time

Yellow did come out, you are allowed to pass damaged cars. You cant crash and then ask everyone not to pass you.
These guys are fun to listen to on the radio but they always call it long before it's over. They did the same thing with Marco in 06.
the best 500 ever in 100 years.
13:15 that was a huge WTF moment right there.
Instead of having chassis made by dallara indycar should have chassis made bys ay Williams n f1team and still use indycar style engines
Dan's last ever IndyCar win...
R.I.P Dan Wheldon

@Tyler83Mr Thing is, has Monaco, Monza, or Spa been around as long as IMS? No. So it is the greatest for that reason and many more reasons.
it aint over til its over
good race .Thumbs up if u were pulling for danica to win!
@WilVincent88 yes i did, and if you had watched it, you should have known by now it was in the indy road course, not the ring smart pants
Best 500 in awhile, by far.
@PhilipTheBigOne It will be half points awarded, with a full field in each race.
Rest in Peace Dan. Wow.
@MrSkittlez1234 thank's. I didn't understand what those commentators said ;)
They've been doing it for 100 years I doubt that will change...
@96texan probably because these commentators are from the ims radio network, it seems kinda weird if you see the pictures to radio commentation

R.I.P. Dan Wheldon.
Just won't be the same without hearing "and Danica crashes" anymore.
JR should have won that. if he had slowed behind Kimball until the front stretch he would have won
Both JR and Charlie could have done that different to avoid that, they both made rookie moves of shorts.
@wallyroyal thanks, I was just wondering because a driver flipped and they said he was putting too much gas in it, the driver died, just wondering...
R.I.P Wheldon
2:10 wtf how many cars are in the pits? in f1 its all single-file with drivethru penalties for unsafe releases. this indy pit stuff is CRAZY!
good racing SOMETIMES? these things go 220+ through this track
RIP Dan Wheldon!
@guitarrmasta half of the indycar races are on circuits
AS YOU CAN SEE AT 14:33 LAWS OF PHYSICS DIDNT ALLOW THE CAR TO TURN EVEN THOUGHT HE HAD THE WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT CAR STILL WOULDNT TURN
the indy 500 is the oldest continueous raing event for a reason. Who cares if its just left turns. monza is mostly right turns and so was brooklands
@Bzking23 5/16 races are on ovals. That is less than half.
Some things simply cannot have happened randomly...
I was here and when I saw JR Hildebrand take the white flag i though he was gonna win.... the i saw his wrecked car slide passed me..... anything can happen
@96texan u u didn't hear polish F1 commentator :x
@THEkingjaymz Your crazy! A car (Jimmie Johnson) blew an engine and there was oil all over the track. How is that not reason to throw a yellow!?
How many commercial breaks are during the indy 500?
We gon go fowerd n den we gon turn to tha leyeft!
@gurlsingerfan I guess we could say 1 rookie + 1 rookie at closing lap = major missed opportunity. Who lost his rear wheel, at 2:24-2:25?
@PhilipTheBigOne As far as I know, It will be via a random draw
Time to spread some new comments here.
if you go too fast in an F1 car, will the areo dynamics make it lose control?
Indeed :)
With the amount of weight F1 cars generate in downforce, if it goes too fast, it will bottom out and slide out of control.
@@cjflash99 Oh I know that now, it's been almost a decade since I commented lol
Too funny!
@Pedrohksgreddyturbo I don't think so... but it's your opinion.
Losing it cost Hilderbrand the 500 but cost Wheldon his life.
@guitarrmasta Really? Ever watched the 2005 United States Grand Prix?
Ecclestone Formula one spoils!!
Remember some names...Kevin Cogan, Scott Goodyear, Michael Andretti...J.R. Hidebrand. He will live with this one until he wins Indy, or until the end of his days, whichever comes first. where is danica??
14:20 e 14:33 Culpa dessa porcaria de Force Índia que ficou na curva andando lento!
its dangerous to go on oval circuits with open seat racing formula/indy should remain on circuits
Good luck there not running the 500 on the road course lmao
he later died taht year :(
@jamesthunderful are you serious? put f1 cars on a dumb ring raceway and you'll get a race twice as interesting as this
I think Indycar is good as F1.
@GTSRyan no
02:21
Hahahahahahaha

@acasouk Are you serious!?
@Pedrohksgreddyturbo hahaha =) turning left, turning left, turning left, I'm amazed how boring and unchallenging these two sports are...
@sammieboj F1 has become so boring since the V10-era ended. Nowadays IndyCar is much more fun to watch, I like the variety with both ovals and road courses, and the tickets are much cheaper lol. "Worlds greatest race course" ... really ?!? Is that bigger than Monza, Spa, Monaco ?!? Gotta be kidding ....
@96texan It is. ever since Tom Carnagie retired, this guy took over and just ruined the commentary. He just likes to hear himself talk because he repeats everything like 4 times
see. this is the worst camera angle. to realy feel how fast these cars are going, it needs to be a still camera. maybe an over head view,
