- The 95th Running of the Indianapolis 500 took place Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Canadian Alex Tagliani led the field of 33 drivers to the green flag. The race ended with one of the most memorable finishes in Indianapolis 500 history.
American rookie JR Hildebrand took the lead with two laps remaining and appeared to be headed toward becoming the first rookie to win the race since Helio Castroneves in 2001. However, while trying to avoid lapped traffic in Turn 4 on the last lap, Hildebrand slammed into the wall.
During the ensuing chaos, Dan Wheldon passed Hildebrand on the frontstretch to secure his second Indianapolis 500 victory and the last IndyCar victory of his career.
My heart broke for Hildebrand. My heart broke even worse months later for Weldon
What happened to the Hildebrand car, did they ever figure out the cause?
@@harpoon_bakery162 Yea he got caught in the marbles on the high line trying to go around the slower car in front. I was sitting right in front of where he hit as I watched Wheldon come flying by and yelled to Dad saying DW’s gonna win it Pop!!!! I always rooted for Dan one of my favorite racer’s of all time. An Englishman who you would think was an American with how Dan dominated ovals. He loved the United States and became a proud Floridian and he absolutely loved Indianapolis. Was always awesome to talk with when getting his autographs. I own every large scale diecast they ever made of DW. RIP buddy, we’ll be watching your boys race here soon enough Dan👍🙏🏎️🏁
@@shredhead4604 touching story, thanks for sharing. He was one-of-a-kind, just such a treat to watch. Once I join him up there, I'll watch him race!
I still get a little teary eyed when they realize and excitedly announce Dan Weldon won! So amazing and what a great job done by that team.
Still the greatest finish to a race I have ever seen. Makes me smile and cry at the same time. We miss you Dan.
The only other one that holds a candle to this finish to me is when Al Unser Jr won it in 1992. Give that race a watch if you haven't. RIP Dan one in a million racer and a class act all the way.
I strongly recommend checking out the 2014 Bathurst 1000 and Josh Revell’s video on it.
2 of those drivers aren't with us anymore, Dan Wheldon and Justin Wilson. R.I.P
And now we've also lost John Andretti. 💔
Both of them, as well as Jules Bianchi and Henry Surtees paved the way to other drivers being saved. May they all rest in peace!
But least he won the race because Jada hildebrand crash
John Andretti has passed as well.
2 British drivers are the perfect balance between us and racing
R.I.P Dan Wheldon so glad you won this we still miss You
he was is my hero
If he don't win indy, no 5 million dollar challenge in Vegas. Perhaps no start in Vegas, an even if probably not from the back....
Watching this today, 13/05/2019...I can feel the real emotion and passion from Dan Wheldon, Your a true champion matey, Thank you
I used to think racing is the answer to all of our problems, but then I saw racing invented new problems, real devastating problems, The tragic of Dan Weldon showed us why, he was the perfect balance between us and racing, he taught us that life need a balance, racing can improve our lives but you can people, if we focus on one expensive the other that’s when the balance is lost, The racing world will find its way again, this time with Dan Weldon our compass
Yes we do and in my world I race Indy cars with my model Indy cars and Dan wheldon is still alive and he still races in my world rip Dan wheldon
First INDYCAR race I ever attended. It started a lifelong passion
Wheldon is, was, and always will be my favorite indycar driver.
My first Indy 500 I've ever watched when I was 12. What a race. What a driver. Loved watching Dan win. RIP
Back again in 2020 to see my hero win the Indy 500 again in my favorite race of all time
By Saturday this week, it will Mark exactly 10 years since this emotional victory
Dan may be gone, but he will definitely never be forgotten... Rest In Peace Dan Wheldon
R.I.P Dan . . . You will always be missed.
Damnit Dan, we still miss you buddy. Wish you were still here. What a great memory this race is.
He’d almost for sure have 3 if not 4 by now
@@KillyJoe Kung bahay pa sa siya
Since there was no actual Indy 500 I watched this replay instead. I attended the race with my brother in law and nephew. Lots of fun that day and it was nice to reminiscence about our memorable trip to the 500.
Swear to God...I've been to 2 Indy races. 2005 and 2011. We rooted for Danica like crazy in 2005. Crowd went wild until -6 laps . Dan Wheldon takes the trophy. In 2011, Centennial race. I went to the Speedway office to buy my official ticket. Centennial race, Dario Franchetti on the ticket, sat in Tower Terrace, Section 51, Row L, Seat 7...and wow...Dan Wheldon won again. I live in St Pete, FL since 2005. Dan Wheldon lived in St. Pete and was buried in St. Pete. I live within 20 minutes of his cemetery. Danica, 2005, it was her rookie year and she had the lead...the only other time she had the lead in her Indy 500 career...2011, which was her last year in Indycar. The coincidences are crazy. When I return to the Speedway with my daughter...who to cheer for now? RIP Dan Wheldon
Man, right in the feels watching this race again. RIP Dan 🏁
I feel so bad for Hildebrand. Every time I watch it at the museum, it’s just so sad! Hope he wins this year or at some point in his driving career
I want him to win it
I’ve never felt this feeling because I was such a huge Wheldon fan anyway so I hoped he would crash or something so Dan would win. I still remember everyone around me in the stands gasping and going silent and then me screaming because I knew it meant Dan won. I think in the time that’s passed since Dan’s passing I’ve come to feel more for JR and do certainly believe he’s a great talent who deserves a full time ride again
@@robpeeters9006 Same here
Rob Peeters If Hildebrand just stayed behind the other car Wheldon would’ve passed him on the main straight anyway, he would’ve been going much slower
@@PaTRpU99 Perfectly said.
Last race of John Andretti R.I.P.
Jr Hildebrand...damn, it was so flawless. What a heartbreaking ending to that for JR.
But great win by Dan.
RIP
I remember watching this race at my old up north cabin along with my up north neighbors and my family and it was an exciting ending even though I wanted JR HildeBrand to win but he at least finished the race in either 2nd or 3rd place after crashing into the wall and coming so close to the win. JR had to be thrilled though, what a finish and a good car he had!!
2011. My favourite Indianapolis 500 of all time apart from many others.
I think i'm right to say Dan Wheldon was one of the best human beings to ever walk the earth.
and a great ambassador for IndyCar
Such a bittersweet memory. My grandmas favorite driver. She died the morning of this race. Seemed like divine intervention when Dan won. Hard to imagine 4 months later Dan would lose his life. Hard to think of the fact the only reason he was racing that day in Vegas was because of his win here…. Conflicting feelings..
I really enjoyed William Fichtner's introduction. It was sincere, believable, and well done.
After leaving Tommy and the Leones he moved to Indiana then did the intro
Someone see this 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 but this year it’s the birthday of the 110 years of the Indianapolis motor Speedway
Love the intro. Sad for the lost drivers.
I cried this day, not for dan Weldon but for jr. he’s 1 hell of a driver and deserves a win
I was at this race it was my 10th Indy 500 met Dan the day before I told him thanks for staying late and signing my stuff he was really interactive with us I said good luck tommorow he was one of my favorites still glad I got to witness his final win in person but was absolutely devestated when he had his fatal crash just 5 months later just 9 days after my birthday my Senior year can't believe it's been 8 years already RIP Dan
Rip Dan you're never be forgotten
Always found it impressive that Danica and Marco finished in the top ten with how bad those cars were all month.
proof that Danica could drive
1:53:44 lolololololol If you find that story amusing, stay tuned.
Scheckter: In 2002 I was leading as a rookie and crashed with less than 30 to go
Hildebrand: Hold my beer
I genuinely was up set that Hildebrand lost in the last corner. I always rooted for Dan Wheldon, he was my driver, but I figured he had won already, so I wasn't as excited as I could've been. But I am genuinely happy that he got to experience an Indy 500 celebration one last time, even if none of us knew it was his last time. Looking back, I'm still upset that Hildebrand wrecked and didn't win, but im genuinely happy that Dan won now.
Alex Tagliani started from pole in the car that Dan Wheldon (the eventual winner) would die crashing later that year in Vegas.
They switched rides but sadly Wheldon is gone
3:33...now add helio in this year
Every year on Memorial day weekend comes the chance to cross these bricks and live forever, just driver and machine in pursuit of immortality. Man knowing what we know now that is such a powerful opening RIP Lionheart.
799 corners perfectly taken. Then.......
Dan Wheldon Wasn't Dead. He Decided To End His Race And Wait For Us At The Finish Line!
still to this day, this is the greatest Indycar race i have ever seen. it sucks that hildebrand lost in the worst way possible, but i still find that finish one of the most iconic in indy 500 history. wheldon deserved the win as much as hildebrand imo, and this is truly one of the most bittersweet moments in Indycar history.
RIP Dan Wheldon, 1978-2011. IndyCar's Lionheart may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. May he forever race in our hearts. Godspeed.
I was there that day and couldn't believe what happened....just unbelievable....we all sure miss you Dan and Justin....😒😒
108th Indy 500 tomorrow. Rewatching my all time favorite indycar race
RIP Dan Wheldon 🦁❤️
I MISS THESE CARS SO MUCH 😭
28:05 Thank you for your service! Having the best seat in the house for the Indy 500 is Izod & IMS' way of saying: thank you for all you did, and welcome home! I applaud Izod for giving a hero the best seat in the house for the 100th running of the World's Greatest Race!
Miss you Dan.
Indy just isn't the same without you Dan. When I first saw this I was shouting in joy because my favorite driver won. Now it brings a bit of sadness.
One of the last incredible victory of the unforgettable Dan Wheldon!
Here's the closing statement of the 2011 Indianapolis 500, the 25th anniversary of the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing on Philippine Television which was covered by Net 25 as told by Precious Catindig-Lubao:
There are a lot of questions about the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing on Philippine Television that haven't answered. But where were you when the Grandaddy of them all in Motorsports first aired on Philippine Television 25 years ago? It was on June 1, 1986, when Radio Philippines Network broadcasted the 70th annual Indianapolis 500, the first Indy 500 to air live on Television via ABC. It was the legendary Harry Gasser who introduced the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing on Philippine Television via RPN9, but how we have been through the quarter of a century of the Grandaddy of them all in Motorsports airing in the Philippines? This is why from RPN9, World TV 21, and Cinema Television 31 to Net 25, it doesn't matter why the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing on Philippine Television has aired. Indeed, a lot a beautiful memories of the Grandaddy of them all in Motorsports airing in the Philippines have made us laugh or cry. Truly, it is the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing on Philippine Television for a quarter of a century
Wheldon at Indy, ... lightning in a bottle.
Plus, the earlier halcyon days at Andretti, w/Herta, Franchitti, Kanaan, and Wheldon... all teammates, winning, having fun, elaborate pranks on one another.
I just noticed that both the 100th anniversary and 100th running of the race were won by the 98 car... interesting.
Fuels runs too
@@KillyJoe Oh yeah, good point.
And Bryan Herta was the stratagist on both of those teams.
Although I fell bad for JR, I’m kinda glad that Wheldon was able to get one last victory before he untimely passing.
Still my favorite race post CART
The 2011 Indianapolis 500 marked the centennial of the granddaddy of them all in motorsports and also marked the 25th anniversary of the Greatest Spectacle in Auto Racing on Philippine Television that started by the Radio Philippines Network in 1986. It was aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on Net 25, who recommissioned the 1989 Major League Baseball on ABC and The Delta Force Theme songs as it's BGMs, on May 30, 2011 as Precious Catindig-Lubao and Ralph Sheheen hosted the Centennial Indy 500 along with Matt Pareja, David Hobbs, and Randy Sacdalan as Commentators together with Bonnie Bernstein, Marvin Haven, Olvia Naguit, Cameron Steele, and Colette Wong as pit reporters, as the race was also simulcasted on DZEC 1062 and Pinas FM 95.5
3:04:48 finish
This race can make any grown man cry. What a race, what a tragic year.
I was born 4 days before this race and still went with my dad!
R.I.P Dan
59:40 start
one of, if not the, most iconic finishes in motorsport. Dan Wheldon got me interested in Indycar and when you combine this amazing moment with the events of vegas is such a whirlwind of emotion.
dont forget people, Danica gets the attention for leading indy in 2005 but DW won the race :)
seabation wheldon his son is drving go karts rip dan wheldon
Who y'all got for the win? My pick is J.R. Hildebrand.
I feel you man
Honestly in may of 2011 I thought that Dario would win but I had a dark horse Dan Weldon RIP dan
DKMedia Me too!
Bertrand Baguette.
My aunt and uncle were at this race and they picked Scott Dixon.
Dan, all of us were so happy for you that day, I myself miss you so much, you are a great champion,😚😚😚
Those engines wow!
Loved the way the cars sounded in this era
Visual definition of a "Rookie mistake".
In hindsight I think he was just a victim of circumstance. Kimball was ahead going 100mph slower. If JR got on the anchors he'd probably have crashed or best case slowed enough to not hit Kimball but Wheldon still would have overtaken him anyway. I get why he went high.
Dan wheldon is a legend
2013 Broadcast please!!!!!
I was there in turn 4 ....had my radio on and everyone within shouting distance was looking to me to tell what happened from our angle you couldn’t quite tell where they were in relation to the yard of bricks we honestly thought jr may have still slid down the wall and won....ah what a moment this was a good one...one of many good ones I’ve seen in going just since the late 90s
1:40:44 Eddie Cheever predicts my profile picture.
2005 Broadcast Please!!!!!!
DAMN, that sucks JR! He was a machine until that last turn!
J.R. Hildebrand won the Jigger Sirois Award for 2011.
3:04:53 J.R. Hildebrand hits the wall
Anyone know the music beginning at 56:48
That's what I'd like to know.
I love watching this victory taken from Barnes and ending up in Wheldons hands🥰
My HERO, Dan Wheldon REST IN PEACE!
Dan "Quick lion or lion heart" wheldon, always in your hearts
The greatest and heartbreaking Indy 500 ever.
Came to this just cause I wanted to see the double file restarts lol these are wild ....been wondering when did they start bunching the field up on yellow and doing the restarts like they do now?
This race was wild.
Miss him so much!
I remember watching this on TV in livetime. Couldn’t believe the ending. Then months later Dan…
What a legend
I was there. Outside bleachers front straight. I couldn't see JR hit the wall in turn 4.
John Andretti looked great at the start. Love the blue stp colors
abc really screwed up the driver lineup graphics before the start. " row 16" really? how many times did abc cover this race?
They did it for over 60 years
A lot can happen in 100 years
I think it is necessary to fix the sound
Very true, I will never forget seeing Dan Wheldon racing in the Indycar Championship, when he had his fatal crash at Las Vegas it was the moment that shook Indycar racing to the greatest degree like when Greg Moore died. That was equally bad luck for JR Jindera to hit the wall on the last lap.
3:04:46 When JR Hildebrand got so close to winning the race, but failed entering Turn 4, so glad Dan Wheldon won (RIP Dan Wheldon)
Final 20 Laps: 2:51:00
4:00 “But every year on Memorial Day weekend comes the chance to cross these bricks, and live forever. No votes, no politics, no, that’s for the academy. Nothing. Just driver, machine, and the pursuit of immortality” This sentence by William Finchner is one of the most beautiful and amazing ways to describe the magic of the greatest race in the world
The introduction by Willam fickner was awesome.
Its baffling to me, he had such a big lead, also just think what happened and yet even now it seems like the reaction from this accident was not as big a deal as it really was.
I have been present at several Indianapolis 500’s including this one. During the COVID-19Tracker-19 quarantine, I have watched several Formula 1 races. Since the one racer got a heck of a jump in this race, why doesn’t Indy start like Formula 1 from a stationary position?
Tradition. That is all.
I always prefered rolling starts rather than standing starts. It's safer and it prevents the car from stalling. Remember what happened in the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix. Ricardo Paletti lost his life because his car stalled on the grid.
40:37
You know what you guys if we all knew that that Indy 500 win form Dan welldon was going to be the last win of of his life before what happened at las Vegas unfortunately we would've all have celebrated that win a lot more.
Parabéns a todos os BRASILEIROS DA YNDY😡
2:35:14 The infamous restart where Tomas Scheckter just SENT it on the outside and gained like 15 spots. Still have never seen anything like that.
Rip lion heart
So 12 years later, this is still one of the most (if not THE most) painful moments I've ever seen in any sport. But one thing that comes to mind is how Diffey, Hinch and TBell would call this if it happened today. I feel like it would be much more electric. Cheever and Goodyear call a good race but kind of boring compared to the boys today. Especailly Hinch he is special in the booth!
RIP Lionheart
My first 500 ... on TV
We miss you Dan.
