Thank you for that wonderful tour!! I prefer the garden that evolved over time. The brick edging that replaced perennials was the most brilliant stroke i believe. The planning and execution of the understory of redbuds which created areas of enchanting shade with light filtering through the branches is a lesson in understanding what makes a garden that people want to linger in. Like a timeless work of art, the potager garden pays homage to the history of the house. It captured the hearts of all gardeners.
I absolutely LOVED this video because it shows all the realities that we deal with as gardener's. I too have older pictures and enjoy compared them to the garden today (with the exception of seeing a prized and beloved plant that has since died). Thank you for doing this video. You're the best Linda!! 😊😊
Beautiful garden before. Beautiful garden after. Just like life, gardens evolve and we enjoy the journey. I still have pine cone finial envy - I know they are no longer available but they still jump out in your videos and 'speak' to me. All the changes, whether intentional or not, add to the peace and calm that your garden evokes. Thank you for sharing.
Linda you are such an inspiration to me. I am taking better care of my yard this year and it’s very rewarding. Please keep these in-depth videos coming.
🌿 Wow, great job on editing, Stewart! Loved the concept of this one. Both are beautiful in their own way- what a journey from then to now. I prefer the recent evolution for a few reasons: more evergreens, less maintenance, better all-season interest, and a variety of lighting conditions that provide diversity and interest as well as a place to rest the eyes. The tree canopies, and mature specimens in your landscape really make it quite special, and intimate. I think over time you really developed the sense of English Garden for your Tutor with an Oklahoma spin!
I really enjoy and learn a great deal from all of your videos, Linda and Stewart, but I think this one is my absolute favorite. What fun to look at how your gardens have evolved, and what an inspiration to those of us who are reluctant to take chances or make changes to gardens we already love. It is also reassuring to be reminded that sometimes even changes that we don't chose can result over time in a better garden. Thank you both!
Thank you Linda and Stewart so much for this video. It obviously took more work than usual but I am so pleased to have seen the history of the garden. Fascinating how it changes with your own priorities, volunteer trees, weather events, climate change, family... Every corner of the place has a story to tell!
Enjoyed every minute of this video Linda! So peaceful, calming and just a space of beautiful joy- on a side note, I want to say thank you to Stuart for not EVER making me dizzy when moving the camera from one section to another, his movements are subtle and i appreciate that so very much. I say this as some YT's move it along so fast your eye can't catch up, i end up having to leave the video for this reason.. lol!!! looking forward to your book!
It is always a journey - and the joy lies in each step. Loved this video, and the progression it shows in both the planting growth and the changes in you as a gardener. At 59, I've just moved to the country and have my first ever garden. I'm planning, planting, digging and growing all with my age and future in mind. I think videos like this are so valuable to new gardeners like myself. Thank you so much.
Hi Amanda...great to read your post. If I could share one bit of gardening wisdom with you, don't plant or make too big of a garden to start with. Nature has a way of out-doing what we can manage and make us feel defeated! Enjoying and maintaining smaller sections gives you time to enjoy your creation. Enjoy Amanda!
This was an exceptional video of before & after! I really enjoyed seeing the progression of your garden & your personal gardening experience. You & Stewart did a terrific job of showing the before photos & pointing out the changes in your garden. My large garden is 6 years old & I have started making major changes with plantings because of more shade in areas that originally had much more sun. Gardening is truly a growing experience & adventure. I so love it! Thank you for sharing so much of your garden & personal self with us.
I loved to see your garden evolve over the years… beautiful then, beautiful now! We change and evolved ourselves so it is only fitting that so do our gardens. I can’t tell you how much you inspire me. All of your hard work it’s very much appreciated. ❤️
Your earlier garden was spectacular, but I do love the calm of fewer colours and lots of green on green. Following you around your garden is like being completely involved in a great book - so satisfying! Thank you to you and Stuart for this lovely, thought provoking video.
Thank you both for sharing the pictures and the story of the garden. It was helpful to see the changes you made in each area when the design/plants no longer worked for you.
I missed this video when it came out. So often I have wanted to see old pictures of your garden. It's such a treat. You new garden is so advanced already that you could add picture of the before all the time!
This may very well be one of my favorite videos. It is so eye opening how a garden changes over time, I had a tour in my garden with my fellow master gardeners. Several years later they asked for another tour. They were all surprised by the change. A garden is a living thing.
My mother died 10 days ago. She was an avid gardener, and you, Linda, remind me so much of her when she was young and vibrant. I'm still an amateur gardener myself, but watching your videos makes me feel close to my mom in spirit, and brings back all those warm sun-drenched memories of her glorious gardens. Thank you.
I have to say this was a favorite video and I think I’ve seen all of them. I also really enjoy the conversation between Linda and Stewart. Thank you for sharing with us and I so look forward to future videos and walkabouts. And I LOVE the OOTD portion at the end!
I have an emotional attachment to your garden the way it is. As I've told you it saved me during the pandemic in 2020! We all change and our tastes etc evolve. We can have plans but Mother Nature has the eraser at times 😉
Every transition you make is always beautiful! Thanks for the before and after, love every change you've made. You are such a special gardener, thanks for all you do!
Gardens evolve over time due to mother nature or personal choices. One thing I have learned about gardening is to appreciate the moment you and your garden are currently in. Much to my surprise mother nature can often outdo my best attempts at beauty quite effortlessly, such as the time when morning glory covered my whole chain link fence one year or the time I had a row of sunflowers by my back porch that when sitting inside the porch felt like you were sitting in a sunflower forest. The chipmunks will not let me duplicate this anymore either. Now I just go with the ebb and flow of each season because as I have learned sometimes no matter how hard we try to emulate our ideas in the garden sometimes no matter how hard I try they don't work out as well as imagined and looking back at photos later it's not until then while looking back I am approaching with a less critical eye. So now my current mantra is it will be beautiful no matter what season or year it is and I have to learn to just appreciate that and not compare one with the other. Linda your gardens are always beautiful. I love your peaceful garden.
I thoroughly enjoyed this "then & now". My take, Linda, is that you studied plants, tried new things, learned from the plants, enjoyed your accomplishments through hard work and just like then, are now continuing almost the same way in your progression and love of what you do. Thank you for lovingly sharing with all of us.
I love the canopy trees and bowers now, as I am smitten with shade gardens. I love dappled sunlight coming through, but love the intimate feel the canopy emits. Also , I am one of the ones who will forever see the black arbor into the pottage whenever I envision your garden. It made it a magical destination into another secret room.
I Love your older garden for the Amazing Colors. The roses were magnificent. I know that it was a joy to smell them. As for your now garden I think its more cozy. Trees are very nice. Thank you mother nature for planting some of them. Great placement. I also enjoy Stewart input he has a friendly voice. and his humorous tone. Thank you 💗
Enjoyed every minute of this video. I like the garden as it is today. It is so peaceful looking. Also, Stewart's tree and surrounding area looks great!
I very much enjoyed this video trip down memory lane in your garden. Gardens evolve. You have lived in the same house for over 30 years; it’s only natural to experience changes. My current garden is my longest one because we moved for my husband’s job. This 12 yr. old landscape underwent a dramatic change when a tornado took out my large oak trees and my pine trees. No more shade! Adjustment required to full sun. It’s pretty darn HOT in southeastern NC, zone 8a. Your garden is lovely and peaceful, and just right for you now. Thanks for sharing it.
One of the things I love about gardening is giving myself permission to let not only the garden evolve but also myself. Seasons come and seasons go both in our gardening year and in our lives. I don't feel bad about letting a good idea go by the wayside. These garden decisions and new inspirations can live together. They seem to form the fabric of the garden's tale, which I see as a beautiful thing. I loved how your story has evolved and been edited to what we see today. It is beautiful!
Oh my! The pics of your rose arbor made me drool, BUT, the way your garden is now is so much more livable, achievable, real-life, I love NOW more! Thank you for continually giving us our garden spark!
I love it both ways. I'm 65 and planted my first flower garden. I have six raised beds and having the best time. I'm pretty sure this gardening adventure started from watching your videos for over a year. Thank you so much for the inspiration.
This video is right up my alley, love me some great before and afters! I have a Red Bud I planted 10 yrs ago that I love so much, you’ve reminded me to buy some more.
I love your approach to the evolution of the garden to more shade and less maintenance. I totally get that and will think more about planting flowering perenials which don't look so good when spring is done and the heat of summer sets in. Sometimes it's so hot here in zone 9b that many things just stop blooming at all. I love all the lush greens making your garden so serene.
Wow, probably my favorite video ever! So fun to see the comparisons in detail and learn so much history of the garden. I'm sure this is one that I will watch over and over, as I do with most! You have inspired most of my garden and for that I am eternally grateful!
It’s very helpful to hear you say that the photos are a snapshot in time, and that it didn’t always look that way. I like that it’s okay to not grow some plants, and it’s okay to pull some out.
Your videos are never too long! I am always a little sad they are over! Love the changes....gardens always change .... that is what makes gardening so interesting! Thanks for sharing!!
I get it! I too pulled out 20 roses 10 years ago and planted perennials and natives. Roses are too much work and in my case they didn't fit with my rustic prairie style house in Illinois. Your previous garden was truly lovely but I totally get the gardening ease as we age.
In North Carolina ear wigs have been so abundant and when you think you have them under control you find more!! It is very interesting how over time we realize things change like the areas changed from full sun to high shade or shade then we have to move the plants to give them their best life. You have taught me not to depend on perennials for color, but texture and colors of shrubs to give us that punch throughout the year. I love the garden better now as it is more classy. Loved this video Linda and Stewart, as I know it took a lot of work putting this together for us. Everything you two do is amazing to me!!
Beautiful gardens before and after. As an older woman, I truly appreciate making the garden easier to manage. Pulling plants that are cumbersome and difficult to manage and planting more beautiful perennials that come back every year saving time, money and work effort. Great tips... thank you
Well, I had a great time today!! Our contractor has been here all day working on the installation of our kitchen...YAY! And, as a "treat" to myself, I have been "binge" watching your vlogs ALL DAY! I LOVE how you did this before and after video! I keep getting more and more tips every time I watch, which is just great since next year the REAL garden work begins! I just get so inspired!! Sometimes, we just need a day when all we do is lounge and enjoy ourselves! This was MY DAY!! The gardens looked lovely both before and now. But, I am learning that less can be "more" and simplicity can be calming! Thank you and Stewart for a lovely day in the garden! Much love and blessings!
LOVE...LOVE...LOVE all and every area of the backyard gardens NOW! much better. Thanks SO much guys, as always - Nice work! It was FUN! (been following for about 3 years) (been a New Jersey, Pennsylvania gardener since 4 years old) I just LOVE your garden style, Linda. So happy to have found YOU!
I love your garden the way it is now. The other day I was watching a tour of a garden in England on UA-cam and I saw a weathered bench tucked into a garden. It remined me of your garden bench, so I think your bench is perfect right where it is.🙂
Loved this now and then tour very much. So enjoyed seeing the evolution of your garden. Gave me hope because my backyard has changed so much since I moved here in 2004. It used to be a shady green box is how I referred to it but because of storms, snow and ice plus OG&E became a bight sunny bare yard. I have been creating beds and planting things hoping to get my nice shady garden back. I have a volunteer redbud that’s looking very nice and learning that most of your’s are volunteers makes me want to just let a couple more just grow. Really helps me to learn that you have had major things die and yet other things have grown and it’s even prettier now. I just started my redo of the backyard last year so I have a long way to go. But I am thinking in about five years I’ll be very happy with it again. I already like it much more than I did last year. So it will happen! Thanks for the inspiration.
Dear Linda, your garden is so beautiful now and before. Our garden is a mirror of our inner being. And as we change, so does our garden. Now is so beautiful your Viburnum, Blue Atlas Cedar, Arbor Vitae, your pelargoniums and hydrangeas, your topiary and brick border ... Before was so nice your roses ... Life is changing, we are changing... If you still want a beautiful healthy rose in your garden, I recommend Olivia Rose Austin for you. Thank you and your dear friend!
This is one of my most favorite episodes ever. I am getting older as well, and seeing how your "Now" garden, is every bit as beautiful as your "Then" garden, was an aha moment for me. I also adore how Stewart ask the questions I want to ask! Thank you for all your hard work! So useful!
I think the most striking change is maturity, both of the plants and the garden but also of the gardener. Leading with practicality, longevity, and comfort has served you very well in your design.
Loved this video! We just bought our house a year and a half ago and the previous owner had no landscaping at all. We recently added two garden beds, a flowering tree, boxwood, lots of plants including black eyed Susan, daisies, coneflower, a veggie and herb garden. Lots of rewarding work! I loved seeing how your garden grew and changed over time. It gives inspiration to a beginner gardener like myself. 💚
What fun to see the before and after and as a whole the garden now is my fav by far. Yes the earlier shots of prime time blooms was beautiful but the things you have changed make it an even more substantial garden that is more timeless. The brick and flagstone. The inexpensive revamp of you fence etc. etc. etc. just lovely. Thanks for taking us in this time lapse of your gardens.
The entry to the potager garden is very Feng Shui in terms of flow. I don't live by that philosophy. However when you see it so perfectly demonstrated it makes perfect sense. Classic just like you. Enjoyed before & after.
Both Gardens are beautiful. Each one has its own beauty and story. Loved the comparison of each one! 💕💕 It’s always fun to look back and see the difference!
I really enjoyed this. Thank you Linda. It is proof that our gardens are ever evolving with us through each stages of not just their lives, but ours as well.
Well thought out as the seasons of our lives change. Also fighting with plants/trees that are plagued with diseases or insects is just too much work. Thank you for spending the time to put this together. I’m sure it’s giving all of us the motivation to make some smart changes in our gardens. Beautiful then and now. 💕
Linda, I love this video. I am all for longer videos. The longer the better. There is so much information, that helps all of us. Your older garden looks more like what I have now. I love color. But, your garden now is so tranquil and sophisticated. You have such a talent and an eye for beauty. Stewart is the best!!! Thank you both for bringing us beauty and inspiration. May God bless.
Wonderful example of the evolution of a garden and both are beautiful. As an Interior Designer, I always tell my garden designer friend that she has a much harder job than me. When I select furniture it stays the same size and doesn’t care about changing conditions of light or temperature. Garden design is not a static task and you have to roll with the changes in the plants, as well as your own abilities. Very enjoyable video!
What fun this was! It is such a wonderful evolution and I love how the beauty now is longer lived. Stewart did a fantastic job and it was great seeing the side by side. Thanks for all of the hard work.
Absolutely love this video, Linda, which I've watched for a second time this evening as I gain inspiration and strength in planning some new areas (complete with baby boxwoods!) in our garden. Your potager is the inspiration for my newest garden space. It also brings me back to the garden of my childhood and I now have such a tremendous appreciation for all the work of both my mom (for cut flowers and composition) and dad (for perfectly sheered hedges and the little pond). This video and your book must make the move to the storybook cottage that much more peaceful.
Love both gardens before and after. As we age understand the climbing on the roof. However, an English garden is roses. Maybe put Lady Banks roses on the sides of the protege garden. Also like having the arbor and gate as it seeks me to check out the secret room more, which you also have encouraged. Beautiful garden.
So enjoyed seeing the evolution of your garden. Love the redbuds planting themselves in the perfect spots and hearing how you decided to make the different plant decisions over the years. I used to have over 40 roses and tried roses in Colorado but they are not as vigorous in our cold. You have helped me learn how to make those decisions based on the new conditions I have. THank you!
So fun to see your garden years ago! Thank you for including your thought process as to why you nixed certain things-invaluable information. I love your garden!
I enjoyed seeing your garden in years past, beautiful !! But so true with perennials, only nice looking for a few days/weeks. I see your garden as beautiful year round. I love antique roses and am very partial to having them if only a short time for display. I am beginnig to rethink my gardens......... with more shrubs and less fussy perennials.
What a transformation. Can't wait for mine to mature. I literally started from scratch over the pandemic...mine is a much tinnier garden here in Nottingham, UK. I live in a small 20 year old development build. Love this. Thanks for sharing.
I like both of them, just beautiful. I do like using more flowering shrubs as I get older. I am slowly transitioning my beds, not as much work. All of our gardens do transition over the years and I feel we like all of the changes because they fit where we are in our life. Thanks for sharing!!❤️
I love your garden, this video was fantastic and I love how you explained the before and after. I am in the process of purchasing a property and am in the process of taking pics and some video to show the before and after progression of my property and it’s plant garden evolve over the years, removing trees / plants I don’t like and replacing them it’s ones I love much more. This is really helpful. Thank you for sharing 🥰🌟👏👍👌
Both the before & after are lovely. Since you asked: I much prefer the after. The ability to get a glimpse into the poteger, the shade/sun mix, the “rooms” & functionality as a result, that you’ve so carefully created. And besides, we all garden in the now, right? The only thing I miss from the before is the vertical blue green interest where the atlas cedar used to be.
Both gardens are spectacular. Love the color of the older, but the maintenance factor cannot be overstated. The after is more intimate and spacious feeling.
I really enjoyed this ! I love your garden now ! The shadiness of it just absolutely woo's me !! The only thing I did absolutely love was the arbor...with or without the roses , just loved that secluded , secret garden feel . However the entrance now is beautiful also. I would most definitely say in the evolution of a garden , yours most certainly has matured into a elevated level of comfortable sophistication that has a perfect balance of charm and elegance that is timeless 💙💙💙
Its fascinating watching your garden evolve. I love that you show your garden before and now. Its beautiful before but I love your your garden now its more peaceful and low maintenance. By the way I have to watched it in three stages. LOL
Linda, I love this video. It’s amazing all the changes over the years your garden has taken. It’s was beautiful as a baby garden and just keeps evolving better and better. Thank you for sharing with us. Your videos always gives me inspirations for ideas in my garden.
Yes I enjoyed this video. I’ve been reading your book and the pictures are lovely. This video exoplanets a lot of why you changed it over time. I recently expanded my garden and planted a lot of perennials and evergreen shrubs. You helped me to not be so hard on myself if I change things overtime because they do not perform well, I didn’t like them or they were too much maintenance. Thank you!
Great video, thank you! I was introduced to your channel when you worked with Garden Answer and did a video on topiary. I checked out your Instagram page and have been copying your style since. I have always loved English Garden design but struggled scaling it down and making it work with my native plant/wildlife garden. You were the bridge to making that work, especially for trees and shrubs. I simply switch everything to natives. A few things you have taught me that have changed my garden for the better: NEGATIVE SPACE, up limbing trees is okay, green is a color, anything can be grown in a pot, garden entrances, line of sight and, of course, anything can become a topiary! I’d be remiss in not mentioning shopping my garden for plants and thrifting with style. Most recently, we have added a front picket fence with a side walk facing border which will be planted a bit more formally with natives, to show it can be done. We are also adding a gate to the side garden, it will have a hedge instead of a picket fence but will have the same native plant border. Thank you!
Just loved this video. The best of all that I have seen. Loved the transition from before and after and your clear explanation on each transition. Your garden is Beautiful then and now 💕
Fantastic video. Loved the rambling Roses, look beautiful, but I also know the maintenance. As an older gardener, I have now a smaller garden, balanced with huge palms, ferns etc. in our tropical area. Colour with flower borders, and native flowering shrubs min. lawn Your garden now is SUPERB !.
This was such a treat to see your whole process throughout your gardening journey. I understand and enjoy your changes and improvements. Thank you for sharing.😊
Hello Linda.. such a great time walking through your garden reflecting on the passage of time growing your garden! There is so much to consider when planting and so much to understand about the whole concept of gardening! But I guess that's what makes gardening to interesting! I commented recently about the fact that I didn't see many roses in your garden...but I see you had plenty at one time. I too had a New Coral Dawn rose that was beautiful. The problem was, it was planted in a spot that hooked my husband every time he cut the lawn. So after quite a while I gave him permission to take it out. I think about it all the time and miss it's beauty. My husband is grateful for the ease of cutting the lawn, once again. Your tour was wonderful...loved the before and afters ❤
very interesting to see how your garden changed over the years good to see for I also look back at my pics of my own garden to see what interested me then and what interest me now and how we change to gain the beauty but with less maintenace as we age
Yes, love this before and now! Your years of experience and knowledge is so helpful. I've been wanting to do an arbor with New Dawn roses, and I am aging too! At 54, I am looking for long term and ease of maintenance as the years go by. Thank you!
Thank you for that wonderful tour!! I prefer the garden that evolved over time. The brick edging that replaced perennials was the most brilliant stroke i believe. Clever fencing...like the darker paint. Love the shade.

I love the garden before but I understand that as time passes you have to change things so it's more manageable.
Wow, probably my favorite video ever! So fun to see the comparisons in detail and learn so much history of the garden. I'm sure this is one that I will watch over and over, as I do with most! You have inspired most of my garden and for that I am eternally grateful!
Thank you for taking the time to do this tour of then and now! Wonderful!
This was wonderful! Love the before and after. Your garden has matured with you. So happy I came along! 😊
I didn’t mind the length of the video. It helps me exercise on my water rower longer. It makes me a stronger gardener🪴🌻🌾🌞
Great tips... thank you
I love seeing where we’ve been and where we are now in anyone’s garden. Thank you for the tour!
Best video ever! It's so awesome to know that as gardeners, our gardens have the opportunity to change and grow just us.
The “nature” of a garden is change …..always something to look forward to 🥰💕
Well, I had a great time today!!
Don’t overdo Libby! You have really been burning the candle at both ends lately!
@@LindaVater , thank you for those words!...I very much needed to be reminded...👍❤️
Beautiful then and now . I time for every season .
LOVE...LOVE...LOVE all and every area of the backyard gardens NOW! much better. Thanks SO much guys, as always - Nice work! It was FUN! (been following for about 3 years) (been a
New Jersey, Pennsylvania gardener since 4 years old) I just LOVE your garden style, Linda.
Now is so beautiful your Viburnum, Blue Atlas Cedar, Arbor Vitae, your pelargoniums and hydrangeas,
your topiary and brick border ...
Can't believe how lovely and hot it is ! It's 8 degrees Celsius here, biting cold wind and rain. Hope it changes for June.
Also I must add I'm learning so much from your videos about garden care and choosing the right plants for my zone!
How wonderful is that... To just have redbud trees spring up in your yard... Amazing...😊
The entry to the potager garden is very Feng Shui in terms of flow. I don't live by that philosophy. However when you see it so perfectly demonstrated it makes perfect sense. Classic just like you. Enjoyed before & after.
Beautiful garden!
So enjoyed this video!
I lost my redbud tree a few years ago,
after watching this I can’t wait to plant
Another one or maybe two.
Both Gardens are beautiful. Each one has its own beauty and story. Loved the comparison of each one! 💕💕 It’s always fun to look back and see the difference!
I love your garden as it is now. It’s much more restful and peaceful.
I really enjoyed this. Thank you Linda. It is proof that our gardens are ever evolving with us through each stages of not just their lives, but ours as well.
I love the roses climbing on the studio back in 2005. But as we gardeners get older we get wiser!!😊
Thank you Linda. It is always fun to look at old garden pics and see how it has progressed! Your garden is truly an inspiration. Thank you!
Just beautiful ~ not one of your videos disappoints at all! So much fun seeing the before & after! Thanks for bringing joy to all of us!
I loved this one, and as an oldster gardener, I understand wanting lower maintenance and how gardens always must evolve!
My favorite of all of your videos. Thank you for the trouble. Sincerely. I really needed to see this
I lost my roses to rose rosette too ☹️. I loved them so much and miss them
I enjoyed seeing your garden in years past, beautiful !!
Thanks Linda! That was fun! I really enjoyed seeing how things have changed. So beautiful no matter how you look at it. Before or After!
This was very fun to watch Linda. Thank you for sharing. I loved the voluntary trees and seeing how the garden has evolved. It is certainly special.
Thank you!
I love how Linda is always upgrading her garden! How beautiful!
Thank you!
No. Thank you!!!
Just loved this video. The best of all that I have seen. Loved the transition from before and after and your clear explanation on each transition. Your garden is Beautiful then and now 💕
You have worked very hard on your garden through the years. It is still just as beautiful as it always was, just different!😊
Fantastic video. Loved the rambling Roses, look beautiful, but I also know the maintenance.
As an older gardener, I have now a smaller garden, balanced with huge palms, ferns etc.
in our tropical area. Colour with flower borders, and native flowering shrubs min. lawn
Your garden now is SUPERB !.
I loved seeing your garden progressing over the years. It was beautiful then and beautiful now.
very interesting to see how your garden changed over the years good to see for I also look back at my pics of my own garden to see what interested me then and what interest me now and how we change to gain the beauty but with less maintenace as we age
Yes, love this before and now! Your years of experience and knowledge is so helpful. I've been wanting to do an arbor with New Dawn roses, and I am aging too! At 54, I am looking for long term and ease of maintenance as the years go by. Thank you!
