    Barbie never made me feel fat and ugly. She helped me have a voice and tell stories, she was my friend!
    Toxic 2000s celebrity culture made me feel worthless. TV shows like Extreme Makeover and Next Top Model, all those glossy magazines, they were a problem. Barbie dolls are just an easy scapegoat for the media to latch on to so they don't have to look at their own flaws.

    Interesting you should mention how action figures for boys also have unrealistic body proportions. As a 36-year old male, I have a somewhat stocky body with relatively short legs, and it's only recently struck me how much my body proportions resemble a 1980s "He-Man/Masters of the Universe" action figure, only a bit less muscly and a lot more flabby.

    Honestly, the "skinny cartoon characters will make our children starve themselves" is pretty dumb imo, as a little girl when I saw Winx for example, my brain went automatically "aha, this is an artstyle thing, this is how theese characters look on paper so they look cool but if there was a portal for them to our world and they went through it, theyd definitly have a different physique like a normal person"
    You know what did make me feel bad about my body thought? Adult actors playing "teenagers " in movies, also my classmates who made fun of me made me feel bad about myself

    Some stuff to unpack here
    1. Lilli dolls are more comparable to collectible figurines today. Is a figure of Hatsune Miku a sex doll? No, it’s just a novelty.
    2. Calling Barbie sexist has unfortunate implications. Saying someone is lesser for preferring traditionally feminine is implying that femininity is lesser. Is it shallow to only shop? Perhaps, but need we be reminded that Barbie is a fashion doll and the fashion is the focal point.
    Moreover it’s pretty annoying how the biggest haters of Barbie treat as an enemy of feminism. Yet she is a pretty good feminist figure- she can encompass the entire female experience- she could be a shopaholic stay at home wife or she could be a professional no nonsense politician. There’s nothing stating that you HAVE to see Barbie as a fashionista only.
    It’s the fallacy I see echoed by misguided Im not like the other girls feminists that women are expected to only shop. That hasn’t been the case for a few decades and you can see pushback on that kind of style in movies in the 90s.
    Idk I just feel like we should empower women to embrace themselves and acknowledge that we’re not one dimensional. Actual women aren’t made of plastic yknow
    (PS if your Barbie is nonbinary or is trans, more power to you.)

    • @Vexmus_
      @Vexmus_ 11 місяців тому +9

      I think barbie has very healthy messaging, personally. Especially nowadays! I love how barbie is portrayed as both feminine AND powerful! She's not got a tomboy edge or any contrivance, she's just feminine! I think a lot of people are misguided on who actually liked barbie. I (a trans man, ill add) grew up with monster high, because I always preferred the self-expression and grunge, but I got why people would like barbie. The audience for barbie is people who are feminine! There's nothing wrong with having barbie be feminine because that's the target audience :)

    • @MartianCandies
      @MartianCandies 10 місяців тому +4

      I used to believe barbie was so bad for little kids during my young sjw years, I tried blaming her for my eating issues when all my issues came from the people around me treating me invisible because of my weight, and now that I've grown up a bit I'm realizing it's way more how people around you treat you that influences your self confidence, more than a doll. My self view issues came from growing up in a predominantly white area and not having any healthy black/woc role models. Not a doll. I feel like some of those women haven't fully realized that.
      I feel like another reason I hated Barbie so much is bc I was denying my own feminity, I was trying to repress it for various reasons, and I feel like a lot of ppl and women who are doing the same, probably take it out on stereotypical feminine things and characters.
      I agree we need to acknowledge that we're not one dimensional, we don't exist in bubbles, no ones more special than someone else for rejecting feminity for themselves. Just support girls and women being what and how they wanna be. Support them if they wanna be a shopaholic fashionista, support them if they wanna dark and alt and reject feminity. Just support people when they aren't hurting others or themselves. (Sadly I must state being trans is not hurting themselves and they need to be supported even more honestly)

    I’m an adult male doll collector (I grew up on dolls and still buy them, so I know a few things you didn’t mention), which many doll brands are consumed by adults just as much as children do; we have money to buy them, so it’s pretty understandable. The big thing about Barbie dolls is that Mattel has people with their hands in the business, which means that Barbie’s can be made cheaper or not as nice as other dolls (say like potato sack clothes, because many of the dolls have printed on designs, including pockets and such), which basically ignores consumer’s criticisms on the quality of the dolls over people who make decisions that blatantly go against them (they can also set the price of the dolls as well). While MGA (who make Bratz, Lol, and Rainbow High dolls) don’t have these people, which shows, because, for example, say a Rainbow High has a line come out and Barbie Extra, they RH dolls has high quality clothing, 2 sets of shoes, a bag, some other separate accessories, and maybe a second outfit, while the B.E. dolls has one outfit, a purse, 1 set of shoes, a statue pet, and literally nothing more, but both are between 25-35 dollars (dolls cost more for the price of plastic rising), it shows how this system really effects the quality of Barbies. On the subject of MGA, Bratz was originally designed by a creator under Mattel, but more like a side idea when he went home, part-time working for Mattel at that time, but never taken to Mattel and pitched. So later he pitched it to MGA, which they made and then Mattel wanted to stop it, because Barbie’s weren’t doing so hot. That’s why Myscene basically copied Bratz. Even before that, Gem and The Holograms was coming out in the 80’s and Mattel rushed out Barbie and The Rockers to literally throw off Gem’s sales. Mattel is messed up and while I buy from them, I find them to be messed up and literally, most their big lines or big creations were ripped off. Also, and I hate to say it, Barbie isn’t a great brand. They are cheap by modern standards, they are a little over priced, lack quality and creativity, and literally tanked other dolls brands in the company (Monster High and Ever After High for example) to make sure Barbie, a household name, kept afloat. Mattel is trashy and I respect Isaac Larian for dragging Mattel through the mud.

      I'm also an adult male doll collector and I also grew up on Barbies. I haven't bought one in my adulthood except for an older one from the 90s that I found at a collectors shop and yeah... Modern Barbie dolls are not that great in comparison to LOL dolls. It makes me sad cuz there's so many kinds of Barbies that didn't exist when I was a kid and now there's all kinds of colors of Barbie dolls. It's sad but I always wonder if Mattel will ever change for the better cuz maaaan. They really need to up their game and stop being so awful.

      @adamsmoberly 10 місяців тому +1

      @@monkeymita Yeah, like I like Barbie, and even back a decade ago, like life in the dream house was the last Barbie line with pretty decent quality. If I were the, I’d reboot maybe MyScene or Generation Girl, which have characters and marry Made To Move bodies and the different sizes to give the characters personalities and a sense of fashion. And have some lines for budget dolls (the fashionista dolls are ok for the price, especially marketed for younger children), that way it’s not just one thing, but yeah, they don’t have doll lines really and the ones they have are crappy and overpriced in my opinion.

I just want to say that my dolls, just like any other toys, mostly used to play, pretend, to play out something that came from my imagination, fantasies, etc. So I never really expect my dolls to be realistic, nor look like me. I don't need them to represent my appearance or most people, I LOVE that my dolls are very beautiful and over the top because that's part of the fun. Even as a child, I knew that. Well, this is just my opinion and experience playing with Barbies, maybe different from other people.

    Thank you so much for covering this topic! While I'm sure Barbie had some sort of impact on how I felt about my body, the real impact was on my desire to pursue a career in Science. I had the "Math Class is Tough" Barbie. That, coupled with the direct mocking of my interest in Science, that I was "too stupid" for Science, as well as being told "Men don't want to date women smarter than them" really held me back and made me feel terrible about myself. Luckily, they were right, to an extent... it turned out I was "too stupid" to believe them, and finally went on to obtain an advanced degree in biochemistry from a very prestigious university. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that children's toys are made within our societal framework of expectations and can greatly reinforce those expectations, whether positive or negative. I know it did for me, although I don't regret playing with Barbie.I would like to believe our societal expectations for young girls and boys has changed for the better, but I think we still have a long way to go.

    I had around 15 Barbies growing up, my first one bought for me at age 6, in 1994. At no point did I ever think that she was what I was supposed to look like. She was just a toy. I rarely changed their clothes and constantly lost their shoes. I spent more time setting up the furniture and lining them up to play teacher. I think it might have been my upbringing by parents who made sure I understood the difference between fantasy and reality (such as I never believed in Santa, never crushed on tv/movie characters till middle/high school, etc.). I loved that saccharine sweet pink Barbie aisle in the toy department as a kid, but now as an adult, it just looks uncomfortable and silly. I mostly see them as collectors items now.

    Again, I do sorta understand where the idea comes from but even as a child, when i looked at a toy, I didn't see real people or such. I saw fun time to let my imagination and when I was done, so did all that until next time. I dunno, maybe I'm somehow the odd one in all thag. Which is fine, I guess

I thought they were pretty and liked their outfits but I never thought I was meant to look like that. The problem isn't Barbie, it's people telling girls to look a certain way. I mean I played with Lalaloopsy dolls as a kid and I didn't think I was supposed to have a giant head and button eyes, did I? And old Barbie movies taught me so many important lessons. I would say Barbie dolls positively impacted my life more than any of the toys I played with, and to reduce that to just being about a doll's body is ridiculous.

    I think that many of these studies are flawed; I had Barbies, played with Barbies, watched the Barbie movies and everythgin but I never compared myself to her or wanted to have her looks; rather I was often bullied by other people because of my looks and Barbie as a child was my comfort. I think these studies tend to not look at other factors such as what kids learn at home, school and etc. I was bullied my whole life and never wanted to look like a doll; but these kids do after only spending 3 minutes playing with them? That's ridiculous... Like how do you know if the parents aren't the ones putting these expectations on them, or their colleges? Teachers? Etc? Also, why do only girls suffer this pressure but boys don't when they are haneded far worse body expectations such like per example Thor, Hulk and stuff; why do these types of studies are always about girls and not boys? Oh, because girls are more "affected because they care more about self esteem and stuff" okay, but why?? We evolved as a society, now girls and boys seem to have equal oportunies and such and many women and young girls are more insecure than ever, and we have diversity in music, art, movies and everything and they are still unhappy; I think the problem lies way deeper than that... I think the problem is probably standard put on women by other women, or by people around them? I don't know... I think this idea that a DOLL can influence a person whole peraonality and life is really stupid... I watched MLP growing up and I never tried to kill people with rainbows, or try to turn a person into stone... That's just dumb. Good video and all, but I think you're just repeating points that most people say instead of going deeper into the missing details. I still fail to see a video where people adress all these problems related to Barbie and give an answer besides: "is the doll's fault"

      even if they were influenced some what take into consideration too that barbie had over 250 careers, has a boyfriend, a dream house, tons of clothes, canoonically 46 pets including pandas, and so many cars and means of transportation,and literally the freedom to do what she pleased, that is what really influenced me, I didn't want to look like because to even get to barbie standard would take not only ungodly amounts of phyiscal work but surgery to get the body proportions down, I wanted her lifestyle the ability to do what ever I wanted at a drop of a hat with unlimited potential, and have people like me for me, and not what i can do for them.

    I didnt even realize how skinny barbie was until i was in fifth grade when i just saw a naked barbie and was like “damn thats a tiny waist!!” But it didnt make me feel bad or anything, i kinda disregarded it.
    Also, i was a huge monster high girlie in elementary school as early as 1st grade and those were even skinnier but i just never noticed or focused on that. I just thought they were cool, fun dolls

    Barbie is a big part of my childhood and made me who I am today. There weren't that many female hero movies back in the day as a kid. So I grew up on Barbie being my heroine. Especially with Barbie and the Three Musketeers and the Fairytopia trilogy. I'm Mexican so I look nothing like Barbie. But that didn't mean I didn't relate to her or not love her as a character. I don't think it made me feel insecure either, I personally don't think a character needs to look like you and be your race to feel represented. Barbie was a female and I was a female and that was enough for me.

    As a kid my brunette/red head dolls were the ones I saw myself as, the blondes were the mean girl, and everyone else was friendly. I’m 27. So idk maybe they need to do that study again. There could be more to it, like lived experience (I’m a red head, my bullies were blonde, my friends were of all hair colors and skin tones) than purely just internalized racism.

    I used to have a barbie doll along with the dream house. Honestly as a kid I thought her body figure looked weird. Not as a doll but I just thought "Someone would look really weird like this in real life"
    But I was never into playing with dolls anyway, I just did it because I just thought that's what girls were supposed to be into. (Plus my mom spent money on it and I felt bad for rarely playing with it)
    In short: I was too much of a realist to actually be affected, found dolls boring, and didn't find anything so unrealistic interesting.

    I was born a girl and have played with barbies and stuff my whole life. I believe that Barbie dolls most definitely effected effected on how I view my body today. I'm 18 years old now and I still find myself staring at Barbie's body wanting to be her shape and size. Not even just Barbie, but many of tv shows that feature women with "perfect" body types also greatly effect/have effected me. I'm 100% sure this is the same for dudes, too. Also that racism study... I'm a lightskinned black girl. My dad is black, mom's hispanic. I have very pronounced black features tho, like the 4c hair and bigger lips. But I used to want to be lighter SO BAD because of like, Barbie dolls and the cartoon girls on tv and the kids who bullied me because of my features because I genuinely thought that to be pretty I had to be skinny, white, and have straight blonde hair. Honestly how would we even fix these issues today?

      Less media like that. Barbie has been correcting the body issues thing since 2016, thankfully. To me, before that she was the thing everyone used to avoid talking about the actual problem, which was the absolute bullshit media around telling people that they had to look like barbie, or they had to look thin or be white to be accepted or wanted.

    I think we should make the rounder rolls wear attractive and/or trendy clothes so it will make people desire chubby girls more.
    Plus, the large features like a big 🍑 and big 🍒s aren’t very common on skinny girls, but are very easy to find on bigger girls, so since Barbie is meant to be attractive, let’s do that to bigger dolls.

    You mentioned a male equivalent to body issues little girls might get from Barbies and I'd wager it's superheroes/action heroes, -especially the live action ones. It's no secret that for one good shirtless scene, male actors will starve, overwork, and dehydrate themselves to give the illusion of bulging, veiny muscles for thirty seconds. A lot of impressionable kids are going to assume that's achievable for them. I'm curious if anyone has looked into it.

    It’s manufactured in similar ways as many other big brands, particularly the clothing industry (including accessories and shoes)
    Underpaid, mistreated workers that oftentimes don’t have any other option. If it’s not outright modern slavery then it’s pretty close to it
    I had one barbie doll growing up, it wasn’t the boring blonde one though, it was darker and prettier. Would fight with my blonde sister over wanting that one rather than the boring one and that’s pretty much my memories of it. Well apart from when the French Revolution came because turns out you can’t put their heads back on so blondie ended up getting a funeral, very fitting considering that we were clearly getting too old to play with them anyway, taking inspiration from our history textbooks. Barbie and the guillotine lol
    I have more memories of playing with snow than with the dolls, playing outside was more fun when you were a little kid, sledding and climbing trees or even fishing later on > barbie dolls

I have no clue why, but I just always preferred darker skin, and I'm from the Norwegian country side. There were like three darker people around me. And they were from Asia!

    I don't believe that Barbie had any impact on eating disorders at least in case of otherwise mentally healthy peoples (eating disorders is more of mentally disorder) after all who compre themselves to a toy that is made to not be realistic.Oh and we have toys like that for boys (GiJoe or HeMan) and I would say they are worst If we going to say that toys can contract to some behaviors and problems because you can get body like that by getting addicted to steroids with will stay with you forever.
    Now the bigger problem is in Hollywood that gives roles only to people who are somewhat you cen call "universally bountiful" were they are showing unrealistic body standards that technically you can get but only If you do something stupid like using steroids or starving.And no it's not going into good direction because even so called plus size actress are in most cases are just slightly closer to what majority of people looks like and also I didn't seen or heard about a actor that is plus size and they are don't choose him to play joke character expect some specific kind of movies like "Whale" (didn't watch it but I saw some promotion materials) and that type of movies showing unrealistic body in in other way ( I know there are people like that real life but still they are minority and they should take care because it's unhealthy) so either way Hollywood is scared of every body type that isn't "the perfekt one" with for everyone is different but for Hollywood is just one simple thing that body types must have those must be unhealthy ones.

    Barbies body is so thin at the waist in part because up to 12layers of fabric could be used when counting hemlines and seams on blouses , skirts, petticoats etc. and to give Barbie a natural waist would leave her looking like the Michelin man
    Super bulky and unrealistic after adding all the fashion pieces.

      @Eepop_stuffs 10 місяців тому

      Barbie wasn't sexual. Not even from the start. Bild Lilli wasn't a sex doll, she was a novelty figure based around an adult oriented comic strip. Her body wasn't made to be sexual, it was made to look good in the clothes, as when the human fabric is piled onto the doll's small body, it looks much thicker. And so her body was made so she could still look glamorous. Her actual doll lines are either focused on careers, trendy fashion, or fantasy.
