Michael - this was a real treat to see. My son-in-law is the bassist for MO, Andy Prince. I shared your reaction with him and he was blown away! These guys are awesome husbands, dads, sons and friends in addition to being great musicians. I’m a new fan for life!
I am so thrilled with the idea of Andy Prince watching a Michael Palmisano video. Your son in laws band means so much to me and I love that you shared this with him
"He's preaching. He's preaching he's preaching he's preaching. There's so much hope in here, and so much misery. It's the battle of dark vs light, and it's reflected in piece of this song." That is the perfect description of Manchester Orchestra's entire discography.
A Black Mile To The Surface is a perfect album, from beginning to end. I'm seeing them live in November in New Orleans, brain tumor and pandemic be damned!
Thanks for the reaction Michael. Means a lot to hear your thoughts and to know that the song struck you like it did me. I’ll also mirror a lot of the other comments here and say that you should listen to the album that this is off of, A Black Mile to the Surface, from cover to cover. It is a sonic journey you won’t regret. Much love.
Yup, going to 100% agree with this. Highly recommend listening to the whole album. Manchester Orchestra and Andy Hull are musical geniuses. Easily one of my Top 5 bands and Top 5 albums. Was instantly hooked on them when I saw them on Brand New's Devil and God tour in 2007 and have been listening ever since.
Here's hoping you find out it's a concept album and the entire thing is a story. This song is the narrative of the man who's raising his brother's baby girl. His brother took his life out of depression and alcoholism, passed on to them by their father. He's talking about how much the little girl has changed his life and helped him get out of the cycle his family was in. The whole album is about the downfall of his brother though and its the single most influential piece of art in my life.
I discovered Manchester Orchestra shortly before they released The Million Masks of God and they quickly became my favorite band of all time. I saw them live this year and they closed the show with The Silence. Needless to say, it was a transformative experience. Do yourself a favor and listen to their entire discography in order and each album top to bottom. Their song to song transitions are flawless..
anyone who listens to this band has GOT to hear them over a PA. It's what their music was meant for and their engineer really gets what they're going for. They were kinda road warriors for a long time too so they're really tight.
If you like they're softer/folkier stuff, check out Bad Books. They have 2 self titled albums, same band members as Manchester Orchestra, adding Kevin Devigne as a songwriter. Some really good stuff in there that you might not find if youre just listening to MO.
in 2006 a girl that I barely knew asked me if i wanted to drive 6 hours to see Manchester orchestra. I was like no thanks I'm not into classical music. a few months later I heard I Can Barely Breathe for the first time. I felt like an idiot but I was hooked. still haven't gotten to see them live 16 years later.
I have bored my friends to tears pleading with them to listen to MO, and in particular the Black Mile To The Surface album….and you’ve said everything I’ve wanted to say to them. A wonderful, wonderful band.
Same. I remember listening to Manchester Orchestra years ago, thought they were good but didn't really register. But then for whatever reason this year I've been binging every album. I think certain music just hits the spot when the time is right.
lead singer andy hull is a genius. all manchester albums are incredible with interesting concepts like double album cope/hope or the touching sailor's story in the trilogy 'right away great captain.' he's done amazing film soundtracks, even one for the daniels who recently blew up with 'everything everywhere.' def a musician to have on your radar
I have another ridiculously epic song by then you should check out… I seem to only be able to find it on UA-cam . But do yourself a favor and UA-cam Manchester Orchestra - Go . I’m not sure a lot of people know about this song. It’s pretty fucking fantastic
One of the best ending songs on an album ever. I would also recommend Colly Strings from their album I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child. Their dynamic on that song is somewhat similar but goosebumps all the way with incredible lyrics. Love your channel!
Thank you. This brought me to tears. Manchester Orchestra has been a band my soul has been tied with for 15 years now. This song is a phenomenal ending to the album Black Mile. Their most recent album is just as good, if not better. The Million Masks of God. The closer to the album is called The Internet and it really compliments this song. But Angel of Death is golden and deserves a reaction.
Like a virgin losing a child is a great album as well as mean everything to nothing!! Manchester Orchestra is amazing, I first saw them live at a Brand New concert back in idk maybe 2007-09ish, they blew me away!! Great pick dude!!
Same here! Mississippi Nights in STL. Probably my favorite music memory from my teenage years. Amazing introduction to this band who would become one of my favorites and are still churning out amazing albums and amazing shows 15 years later.
Took a train to see them with Brand New in Salt Lake in early 2010. Brand New opened their set with just Jesse doing Soco Amaretto Lime by himself and harmonizing with the crowd, and they went straight into Sink. Crazy show.
I came upon this this band and song in particular to this song (The Silence) about 2 months ago. I honestly listened to it a good 4-5 times in a row. There’s just so much to it. Thanks for the breakdown. ‘I know how to speak’ is another fave.
I love that this was requested! Nothing super complicated just a great track played to perfection. Ethereal build to the epic payoff with actual lyrics. Perfect track. EDIT: Your breakdown of the drummer is spot on. The airy feel for the first half is HARD to pull off and perfect for the atmospheric feel
The dynamic range of Manchester Orchestra is probably my favorite thing about them. My all time favorite MO song is Colly Strings. It's an excellent representation of this quality. Great vid Michael!
So great to see you hearing Manchester! I've loved them for a long time, and this album is an amazing musical experience. I highly recommend listening to it straight through in one sitting. Thanks for all you do on your channel! Enjoy
If you think these lyrics can stab you like a truth slinging knife, you a) gotta check out the whole album and b) the “trilogy” contained in it starting with “the Alien” and ending with “the Grocery”, …especially the Grocery. I get chills just thinking about it.
yessssss. this seemed long overdue. love this song - and love how you instantly feel the story in that song. ”I know how to speak“ would be my recommendation as a follow up
15:56 is the feeling of listening to MO. That feeling is always there whether it is in the background or right in your face, and it is what makes them my favorite band of all time.
I’ve loved this band for a long time, I’m so happy to see them get more attention… they are one of the best American rock bands of all time. I fell in love with their albums and then was lucky to see them live, where they absolutely melted my face. Their live show is so loud. Then seeing Andy Hull during his solo tour was amazing. He’s a national treasure.
This is the song they play as their encore/finale at live shows. It's my favorite song by them, followed by "The Gold" from the same album. Definitely check them out live if you get the chance. This song in particular is heart wrenching. Your analysis was incredible!
I have been a fan of this band for what feels like my entire life. They have been the soundtrack to some of the best moments, good and bad. Like a true friend and companion. I salute them.. and you Michael. And Jeremy
Wow, Michael! What a deep and reflected interpretation of this masterpiece of a song! By the way you are talking, i can hear a musician, a poet, a philospher and a preacher. Keep up the good work! Greetings from southern Germany!
I can't play any instruments at all, but i love music. It does something to me and makes me feel things not many other things can. I love watching your videos. I don't understand any of the technical notes but i like hearing you pick them apart. What i loved most about this one was watching your reaction to a song that i know well knowing that what you were feeling probably was't far away from what i felt the first time i heard this song. And finally, Manchester Orchestra are a fab band. Music, lyrics and the vocals. Rare to find.
I heard this song for the first time last year and I immediately had to have some of the words tattooed. I scheduled the appointment before the song even ended. Thats how much this song hit me.
So much fun watching you experience this track for the first time. MO pours so much passion and raw emotion into their music - I get pretty worked up every time I hear this song. Jeremy - great suggestion! So glad to see these guys get more facetime and appreciation from other musicians because they have an unbelievable talent for invoking something when you hear them play. Pretty special experience to see them live, too!
Quite simply one of the most evocative songs ever written. The music carries all of the emotion as it crescendos into that middle to late half. Brilliance that is nothing more than spine-tingling....every.....time....I ....listen....to....it.
Love seeing people discover them. I’ve been a die hard MO fan since 2006 and have seen them perform more times than I can count. Easily one of the best bands in the world. Thanks for the video.
My favorite band of all time! Cool to see you react so many jams from this band with lots of different styles. Cope album is heavy, a black mile is ethereal, mean everything is gritty! Would love to see some more songs from them!
From the first time I heard this song, I was hooked. I've listened to it well over a hundred times and it's on my most listened-to list on Spotify. I don't really know anything about music except that I have loved her all my life. From the time I was in my pre-teens, I was singing along to my Barbie records, The Carpenters, and Patty Duke. Thank you for reacting to "The Silence," I had major goosebumps just as I did the first time I listened to it
I saw them at the Anthem in DC when Black Mile to the Surface came out. Amazing show. I first saw them at ACL festival in Austin and they were great and I became a fan. They have slowly become my favorite band.
Been listening to MO for almost 13 years and theyve been one of my favorite bands for right around 13 years lol, love to see them getting the appreciation they deserve
Hello Michael and everyone that recommends songs on here. I just wanted to say THANKYOU I have found so many different bands that otherwise I wouldn't have heard and had the pleasure of passing on to others myself. My personal soundtrack has been enlarged over and over. So again THANK YOU.
This album is such a beautiful collection of songs that build up to the culmination of this song at the end. I highly recommend listening to the whole thing.
I'm not a musician by any means, but have had an appreciation for musician ever since I was little. Followed the rabbit hole of UA-cam videos for a bit and thos is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm glad it is. Gained a follower. This song hit my soul whe. I first heard it.
Such a powerful song in every way. Feels like it’s about that constant battle in our souls, between resistance of all that seems wrong and acceptance of what is reality.
You had me at Manchester Orchestra "The Silence", but playing a little guitar years ago and having a few years of Music Education in College, you are using terms I hadn't heard since since then. I love it and will be watching more videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.
I can’t tell you how much I appreciated the fact that just listened and absorbed the experience of that song! It has so much meaning to many! I hope you are now enjoy them as much as we do.
So thankful you’ve done this band. They have so many amazing songs. I would love to hear your reactions and thoughts on “The gold” by them. Thank you for all your videos Michael
Michael thank you for doing these videos , as if the great music you have turned me onto is great, but you also teach as well and this is what makes your channel and Guitar Gate so amazing......thank you please keep these coming
I was introduced to Manchester Orchestra when then toured with brand new back in 2006-2007 (can’t remember what year exactly). I have been a big fan ever since.
“Shake it out”, and “I’ve got friends” are the two songs that got me hooked. I literally listened to those on repeat for hours. The the dynamic range and the movement of the songs is just freaking awesome.
Andy Hull and Manchester Orchestra has been my favorite band since I first heard Like a Virgin in probably 2009. I love seeing people dissect and appreciate their music. It’s something truly special.
These are the most amazing musicians in the last 20 years. I found them on limewire after hearing Carrabba from Dashboard Confessional mention them in an interview for music he was listening to. That was Wolves at Night and I have been floored and in love since. We just saw them in Atlanta for Stuffing and it was the most transcendent experience of my life. To say they give me the feels is a gross understatement. They ignite within you and fill you with emotion exploding in vicarious love and passion.
I also highly recommend watching the the docu short on UA-cam called I Know How To Speak. It’s about the making of this album and ends with this song in the studio.
You kept talking about him preaching, oddly enough, Andy's father was a preacher. I've been a fan of this band for a long time now, and I don't know if I found another song writer of this generation that is better than he is. Can't wait to see them again. Thanks again for the video. Please keep giving us awesome content.
Love these guys! This was the first song of theirs that I came across and now I'm hooked! Michael - Have you ever explored any Thrice? Would absolutely LOVE to see you break down one of their songs. They've evolved a ton from their early days, but their new stuff is amazing as well. "Hurricane" would be my top choice, "Words in the Water" would be second, and I could go on, but I'll leave it there! (side note: hard to find quality live versions of most of their stuff)
I''m a huge fan of MO, and of Andy Hall, in particular. I've viewed maybe a dozen reviews of The Silence here on UA-cam. Thank you very much for the best, most musically insightful of them. Very cool indeed.
I repeatedly listen to tracks that Palmisano suggests, due to his reaction videos. It is rare that I hear him reacting to great music that I already know. Kudos to him for knowing how great Manchester orchestra is.
When you're waiting for "the silence" in the room to dissipate. There is so much funk in the nuance, in "the silence." nice nice nice. love this video!
Can't believe this video has been out for 3 months and I've only just seen it! MO are one of my favourite bands - routinely I get caught up listening to just MO albums for like a week at a time. So glad this video hit you as hard as it hit me! Dig into Cope, and if you like Manchester Orchestra dig into Frightened Rabbit too.
Michael - this was a real treat to see. My son-in-law is the bassist for MO, Andy Prince. I shared your reaction with him and he was blown away! These guys are awesome husbands, dads, sons and friends in addition to being great musicians. I’m a new fan for life!
This song got me through so much. I can’t tell you how much I needed it. Let him know how much their fans love their music.
Prince is the man!
Prince is our king
I am so thrilled with the idea of Andy Prince watching a Michael Palmisano video. Your son in laws band means so much to me and I love that you shared this with him
I’ve been watching and loving these guys for a couple years now. They literally blow me away each time. This song always leaves me in tears.
"He's preaching. He's preaching he's preaching he's preaching. There's so much hope in here, and so much misery. It's the battle of dark vs light, and it's reflected in piece of this song." That is the perfect description of Manchester Orchestra's entire discography.
I'm listening
Have you just listened before you did this channel I get imotional
Just lstening
The album this song is from "A Black Mile to the Surface" is a masterpiece. Easily in my top 10 albums of all time
Agreed.
A Black Mile To The Surface is a perfect album, from beginning to end. I'm seeing them live in November in New Orleans, brain tumor and pandemic be damned!
I love this album so much
my fav of all time
In a world of radio hits and singles, there exists this gem of an Album. It's like an audio book, it's so beautiful.
Thanks for the reaction Michael. Means a lot to hear your thoughts and to know that the song struck you like it did me. I’ll also mirror a lot of the other comments here and say that you should listen to the album that this is off of, A Black Mile to the Surface, from cover to cover. I love this song thanks! Man I'm really sad he didn't to the "studio" one though. Edit: Its in my "all time top live performances " list haha.
Have to agree. You have to listen to the entire album. Haven't had an album envoke gods honest emotions from me as a black mile to the surface.
Manchester is my favorite band. Thanks so much for the recommendation! This made me really, really happy.
Thanks Jeremy for getting MO on the channel. Well done.
Yup, going to 100% agree with this. Highly recommend listening to the whole album. Manchester Orchestra and Andy Hull are musical geniuses. Easily one of my Top 5 bands and Top 5 albums. "I Know How to Speak" is an outsanding tune by them as well. It'd be cool to see you do the acoustic version of that one.
Easily my best song ever!!!!
I know how to speak is the song that brought me to this album in the first place, which introduced me to one of my favorite bands
And there it is..... you just discovered the only band that will never let you down.
Never ever ever let you down!!!
I discovered Manchester Orchestra shortly before they released The Million Masks of God and they quickly became my favorite band of all time. @@gavinmcintyre8459 they have 3 self titled albums lol. The most recent is a bit on the softer side but I wouldn’t say II is “softer” just less heavy.

Swiss Army Man is so awesome. Andy Hull’s soundtrack is like another character in that film. Really makes the movie.
This is one of the most ridiculously epic songs I have ever heard.

It starts as a prayer for him and his daughter, then it’s God’s response back and forth. Andy discussed this in one of their documentaries.
Does anyone have a link for this documentary please? I assume it's on UA-cam
"god" lul
@@markl1910 I'm sure you found it but if not this is interesting ua-cam.com/video/ai5OeBuOz0g/v-deo.html

Manchester is one of the most impressive bands I’ve ever listened to. Seeing them live is something else.
Like a virgin losing a child is a great album as well as mean everything to nothing!! Manchester Orchestra is amazing, I first saw them live at a Brand New concert back in idk maybe 2007-09ish, they blew me away!! Great pick dude!!
MO and Brand New; what a show that must have been.
Dude me too!!! Kansas City Missouri!!! What a show!!!
Same here! Mississippi Nights in STL. Probably my favorite music memory from my teenage years. Amazing introduction to this band who would become one of my favorites and are still churning out amazing albums and amazing shows 15 years later.
That was the same tour Kevin Devine was on yeah? The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me tour? Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Took a train to see them with Brand New in Salt Lake in early 2010. Brand New opened their set with just Jesse doing Soco Amaretto Lime by himself and harmonizing with the crowd, and they went straight into Sink. Crazy show.

Enjoy
This video was made for me. Thanks Jeremy and Micheal. I wouldn’t be here without this band. That’s what they give to us. Truly blessed ❤️
A Black Mile to the Surface album is one of my favorite ever. Has great music, lyrics, depth, and replayability.
This is phenomenal but doesn’t scratch the surface of their Hot Topic session. That version of Pride is phenomenal. The tone is pristine.
If you think these lyrics can stab you like a truth slinging knife, you a) gotta check out the whole album and b) the “trilogy” contained in it starting with “the Alien” and ending with “the Grocery”, …especially the Grocery.
I get chills just thinking about it.
I’m taking my 13 year old daughter to see these on Thursday in Manchester UK, I’ve waited years to see them and it feels a little like Christmas Eve!
I've listened to this song, and this performance so many times and I still get goosebumps and water in my eyes. Great video
yessssss.
this seemed long overdue.
love this song - and love how you instantly feel the story in that song.
”I know how to speak“ would be my recommendation as a follow up
Duuude Manchester Orchestra is awesome. This whole album (A Black Mile to the Surface) is great!
15:56 is the feeling of listening to MO. That feeling is always there whether it is in the background or right in your face, and it is what makes them my favorite band of all time.
Listen to the whole album. Beginning to end! What a trip. I don't say many albums are perfect, but this one is to me.
You'll love exploring this band's discography! Lots of excellent music.
Been waiting so long for this one since you teased it a while back. I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH!!!!

Great song. Andy Hull is such an amazing songwriter!
Easily one of the best lyricists of this generation. The stuff he did with Right Away! Great Captain is a masterpiece
Just seen them back in March, seriously one of the best concerts Ive ever attended
I heard this song for the first time last year and I immediately had to have some of the words tattooed. I scheduled the appointment before the song even ended. Thats how much this song hit me.
I requested this song in one of your live chats. Very happy to see you react/review it.
Thanks Michael, great to be introduced to a new band!! some cool bits at the beginning of the original video (Vevo) of the band setting up.
You just managed to put into words the feelings I get from listening to this song (which I have loved for many years). Goosebumps every single time!
so dope to see you do one of these guys' songs. a buddy of mine runs sound for them when they tour. he got me hooked on them a long time ago.

I really enjoyed this breakdown and especially the appreciation for Tim Very's drumming. It's such an important part of such an amazing song.
Amazing song choice! Great video!
Yo Michael, literally just discovered this record and song today, and here you are. Stay in my mind man lol. Thanks for the content!!!
My favorite band, and you grabbed so many things that make me love this band.

Manchester Orchestra is one of my all time favorite bands. They are absolutely amazing and this reaction video was great!
Michael thank you for doing these videos , as if the great music you have turned me onto is great, but you also teach as well and this is what makes your channel and Guitar Gate so amazing......thank you please keep these coming
Their album Simple Math is one of my favorite albums of all time. It's top 10 in my life anyhow.
I’m l ready a huge Manchester fan. Welcome to this mind blowing band, loved seeing your reaction. ❤
His writing is top notch! I can't even put his genius into words.
i see what you did there.
Another great video! Love that tune
What an astonishing performance. I am blown away.
So happy your finally do MO. Hope you do a bit of a dive into their music.
I also highly recommend watching the the docu short on UA-cam called I Know How To Speak. It’s about the making of this album and ends with this song in the studio.
Found Manchester Orchestra back in 2009, love them!
Dude - you are a great teacher - love your passion - Now, go listen to all of Manchester Orchestra's catalogue - put it in repeat!
There is nothing like seeing these guys live; Tim Very changes the dynamic even more. They’re incredible
When you're waiting for "the silence" in the room to dissipate. There is so much funk in the nuance, in "the silence." nice nice nice. love this video!
Been waiting for years to hear this review... thank you @Jeremy Frick
