Hello UA-cam! If you guys enjoyed this, please do check out my other videos of the farmhouse restoration - at the moment we're working on gutting and replacing an old rotten oak roof, far more exciting than concrete and insulation in my humble opinion... Also, please do subscribe to the channel, I'm posting twice a month at the moment but would love to ramp that up if people enjoy!
Hello friend, I would like to know what is the purpose of the insulating plates that they install at the beginning, since I observe that later they put concrete on top. Very good channel and I will appreciate your response. Cheers

Hi Carl you may have just solved a problem my old kicthen is 5 inchs lower and tiled onto hard core . Can I use this solution to raise the floor and tile then put my kitchen floor units on top ? what sort of strength have these boards ? i was looking for wedi boards and this cameup - is the concept the same? thanks
Great video Carl. Few questions about your screed... your tiling video says '3 weeks' after screeding. Thought that seemed a bit soon, but what sort of temperature was the screed cured in? Also what was the mix? 4:1? Any additives in the water?
Been screeding over 30 years now, never laid a screed on bare insulation boards ever, polythene is cheap and will save you 20% UV value, as the cement destroys the reflective foil .Other than that , perfect video, thumbs up.
@@z8Nation yes i have always put a barrier between cement and insulation boards, you dont have to tape board joints also it stops joints following through the screed, reducing cracking.
@@z8Nation put like this I'm just putting in a similar floor in 2021. Architectural plans stipulate vapour check membrane over insulation boards before scree.
quick question - how would you run central heating pipes to radiators now the floor is concrete and walls solid brick? I noticed you had cut out sections in the insulation boards for electric cables - could you have done the same for running pipework (might be silly question)
very nice, but here we usually put forged in the concrete to prevent it from cracking. Has not been sunk or broken with the passage of a year? great work equally
The job could have been improved by closing the gaps between the insulation boards with some gun foam and taping the joints of the top layer. Also a PE membrane should have gone on top to protect the aluminium foil, cement is caustic and reacts very well with aluminium, so it eats trough, the membrane also acts as a vapour barrier. You gave up on the cat exploring this big litter box 😂?
Hi hope you are well, if you only had a small area like 1m x 1.5m and didnt have access to a mechanical mixer, how would you go about mixing the screed? Thanks
Hello. I noticed the house we purchased the extention attached to the house - the flooring does not have insulation. There is a membrane and 4" concrete on the floor. However is there an option i could insalate the floor before we decide to put either laminate or carpet down? Thanks in advance
Have a look at a German company called GUTEX, you'll need a membrane to stop moisture passing through, especially if the concrete slab is bridging and allowing moisture to pass through
Hello! What did you lay down as a dpc or something to stop the moisture barrier? I assume this is a true old building and it's solid walls would not have a barrier at the base layer. It would be great to explain the initial methods to the process. Have you done something to stop moisture from the base floor? Looks like you had some initial concrete layer before the thick insulation boards.
If that was pex plumbing that the insulation was laid over top of... why would you put contrete/mortar on the floor as your subfloor to make it permanently inaccessible?
Honest question from over in the US, what advantages are there to using this method ( low hydration Portland sand mix 1/5 or so guessing ?) To just pumping in some concrete?
flooring and drywall is probably where I'll always leave it to it's own professionals, it requires a lot of experience, a diy person can do 90% of the work, but the last 10% is what gets noticed, my dad "used to say 20% money gets you 80% of the work".
Can you pour on top of celotex etc.. ? isnt it kinda spongey ..is this good practice ?? Let me know cos I could do this in my shed .. if not ill try summink else ...thoughts ??
You certainly can, but the cement on top needs to be thick enough to spread any point load over a large area of insulation so it does not collapse. That was probably 70mm thick (3 inches ) thick.
No need to tape the insulation seams when using this method to keep the moisture from penetrating? No need for a wire mesh in the screed mix to keep it all stable? I guess the floor just floats or does it sit on some kind of foundation that supports the stone walls?
160 mm of what looks to be hard foam (pir/resol?). That's an immense amount of isolation. Rd of around 8 or so? Why so much? Or is it different stuff? Looks like a beautiful place though!
Jelte Arntzen no, I think you’re right. My dad likes to do things over the top...”belt and braces”..... but it does get very cold here in winter and we won’t have central heating
that is why the top layer has to be thick this looks like about 70mm thick - so the load at the piano legs is spread over many square metres of insulation
This is the first in a series that I have found on UA-cam but it doesn’t seem to start at the beginning. Who are you, and where are you at and where are you from? Why are you doing this and what are your plans? I just found you on UA-cam and can’t find any background on what is going on. Please help!
this is very rural france - only in these kind of places could you get away with doing it fairly unregulated - i.e. with limited health and safety...to do this in a city would cost far more because of that
In Poland this is standard. I have it at home plus that I have water piper inside the concrete slab for floor heating. Works with no issues for 10 years now. I have 16cm of styrofoam but the floor is 60cm above the ground and it’s super dry here so I could use EPS styrofoam not XPS like you.
I wondered if foam concrete could offer an equivalent insulation quality compared to this conventional method of installing insulation panels topped with cement mortar screed surface?
Have been taken by the idea of foamed concrete, but it looks much softer. So I'd have thought you may need to then top with something else. Not that I can grok u values. Perhaps someone would post a comparison including thickness.
Thanks for the video. Wasn't it necessary to tape the joints, usually done with aluminium tape? Also shouldn't a moisture barrier have been put down before the screed? I understand the screed can chemically react with the PIR surface.
стыки полистирольных плит можно было проклеить скотчем простым - не забивался бы раствор и не образовывались бы мостики холода. This is how a video should be done...great presentation without any bullsh*t
thank you sir!
It was nice to see the cat doing its job as supervisor and inspecting the flooring to see it was up to code.

Good work, sir
NO, BUT SERIOUSLY, LOVE YOUR WORK. NICE KNEE PADS!
Perfect, thanx. How much that screed weighs per m2 ?
what about rising humidity, does it affect the insulation boards?

thanks for uploading/posting that type of video, but till us about the wall repairing of your farmhouse
Should there not be a membrane under the insulation before you lay it?
Beneath the insulation bro
Hello! Why would you need the insulation and what material is it made of?
Good evening. After the screed how long to I need to wait before laying a laminated floor.

They’ve missed it out 🤦♂️😂
question? Why did you not install some wire or steel rebar in this floor?
Nice job respect from morocco
Can I put this insulation directly on top of loose sand and then put screed over the insulation?
That cat 😁😁😁😁😁😁
Good video,thanks
Without the need for insulation, would the screed need to be bonded to existing floor or can it be laid directly onto the floor?

Hi there gd vid but out of curiosity why didn't you tape the joints
Novice here!! May I ask if when you have levelled it that’s it? Do you add a liquid form of cement on top or do you leave it as this sand mixture?
no band of insulation separating it from the wall ?
What is it with dogs and cats and fresh cement?
Super film.
