There's a lot of snobbery aimed at construction workers. That we're uneducated or somehow beneath other professions. Fact is, some of the smartest people I've ever met are builders/ construction workers. We might not have read the classics but we're constantly problem solving, applying mathematics and geometry, working stuff out and juggling multiple connected factors at any given time. It's a never ending learning process plus it can be physically brutal. I honestly believe it'd take longer, and require a greater IQ, to become a good builder than a good doctor or lawyer. Sometimes when I tell people I'm a roofer they react like I've just admitted to being a career criminal. It's why I hate those programmes on the BBC about cowboy tradesmen. When are they going to make a program where Matt Alright goes after cowboy bankers, journalists and legal professionals? It's middle class snobbery.
Completely agree. Wisest man I know is a carpenter. Trades have the broadest skill set (trade smarts, math, sales, service, legal, brokering, risk analysis & mitigation, estimating, etc.) & acquire vast amounts of knowledge over the years).
Great video Roger, I encounter young folks starting out (plumbing) who are often very eager to work and more that happy to put the effort in. I've realized that often all I need to do is give someone the chance. None of us were born knowing are trade, we all had to learn it somewhere.
After doing my double length garage floor a few years ago i can vouch that it definitely isn't as easy as it looks - had to take the following day off to recover! He's got a hard life ahead of him. I hope he gets the reputation and reward he deserves.
Hard work that on your knees and back all day. For any one else interested you can also do a bonded screed with tile adhesive and a notched trowel and lay your screed on top while it is still wet, much like the slurry that Luke used in the video. You can also lay an un-bonded screed using a bond breaker such as a layer of DPM where movement may be an issue and reinforce the screed with chicken wire or the like. Cheers Roger
He's fantastic. He's got screeding down. He can do fantastic work now in any trade because he mastered one of the basics of prep work for so many different fields. Concrete, paver stones, tile etc
Great video roger,Fair play to the young lad, he deserves the credit,as a sparky myself trying to get my nephew to learn a trade ,you get more out of a brick wall, all they want is easy money without any effort ,luke is an inspiration keep up the good work
Nice touch at the end there Rodger - i agree .he’s also at the age where he hasn’t got the aches and pains so hell only get quicker and better with nothing holding him back
What a top lad Luke is. Amazing work ethic. I hope he continues to be so conscientious in his trade and not just when a camera is tracking him 😂 His parents must be so proud.
Superb job. So nice to see a tradesman take pride in doing a job properly. Fantastic to see a young man master his trade and be enthusiastic about working. I'm sure I have seen this somewhere before?!!! Stay safe ATB
its fantastic to see that some of the new generation have and continue to learn and listen and really care about doing a good job. Taking their time, do it once, do it right First time! fantastic job!
Another great video watching quality trades doing perfect works. I hope Luke and Lee pass on their skills to others and hope their business grows and grows
I’ve been a plasterer for 20 yrs I’ve done a few screeding jobs in my time and I gotta say This lad is the best I’ve seen at it 👍🏻 Screeding is brutal in your body I’d rather skim walls any day 😃
tough work, one of the hardest and most under rated trades, most plasterers 40 yrs ago could do this work very well, but now, trade on it's own, brilliant for 18yr old
Hi skill builder, I’m a disabled teenager and I’ve always had a dream since I was little of settling up a business in the construction sector. Is there anything I could do to prepare while I’m young. Cheers
I guess it depends on what your disability is, there will be all sorts of physical roles like this, but which I imagine for someone like Luke here might leave him with a sore back at the end of the day, or there will be roles like architects, kitchen/bathroom designers and building inspectors which aren't so physically challenging. :)
thesunreport cheers for replying. I thought I could run the business from home and have some employees working for me to do the physical work. I can’t walk on my own so site work is a no go due to health and safety issues. I’m unsure how to get the ball rolling on preparations for the future and setting up a business?
Get an education on business management , and accounting. It must be run as a business first. Then hire the best craftsmen you can get. Third a top notch engineer.
I have to agree with you this young lad is exceptional! I worked on some multi million £ houses in Weybridge in the late 90's and the screed was so bad; the symmetrical wallpaper and the radiators looked like they were way out of level!
One of the best paid trades on a meter price. But the graft the do reflects there wages. If your looking for the best screedrs in the South East check out Harbert floor screeding highly reccomended!
I went self employed when I was 22. Confidence and hungar is a huge advantage. I used to work my ass off 14 hours a day for 8 years. It took its tole. Now I work for someone else. Great to see young people eager to learn. So I teach them. You know straight away if they going to be a good'un
Great job there, and as others have said nice to see youngsters taking pride in their work. I've got a small part of a garage floor i need to level at home, but I don't want to raise the floor height too much. What would you recommend I use to take out an 25mm drop over say about a meter? Could I use a screed like this to sort it? Thanks for the great channel Skill builder, I've learned loads from it.
I remember watching this first time round. Good to see it again. Screeding is something that has always eluded me so I know how hard it is and how easy he makes it look!
18! That's unbelievable, fair play lad he deserves all the success that comes his way!

Great job. Would have been nice to plug their details so we could use them?
He really wants to do a good job-- and he does one!
Wow nice work! He is not using pure cement is he? What kind of bonding agent is being used here?
