  • I've had the little "offcut" mallet in the workshop for so long, it was originally the base for a mushroom I was making a few years back that broke, so it was never intended to be in use for so long, just a temporary mallet, or so I thought. When I was tidying up the workshop the other week I came across this lovely piece of cherry I knew I had to use it as the handle, it wasn't big enough for other projects. I decided to accompany it with a pre-turned piece of elm, I believe these are the perfect combination of beauty and strength. The mallet has been sanded to 60 grit and finished with a coat of Danish oil
You'll be seeing it from now on my videos!

    Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

A fine, functional piece, Harry! Here in the Ozarks, hedge or Osage Orange is plentiful and makes excellent "forever " mallets. I've always turned mallets as a single piece, but will try your 2-piece method in the near future. Thanks for posting. I always enjoy your videos.

That was a marvelous 8 minutes, Harry. And I think the new one is better suited for actual work.

It looks fabulous. Is the head of the mallet a different type of wood purely an aesthetic choice, or are there other reasons why it is beneficial for it to be a different piece from the shaft.

Personally I think it would depend on what you are working on both mallets could be useful
