Nice little bowl - well done! Just upgraded from my old craftsman to a used, well-maintained Nova & have been self-training on similar pine pieces from the firewood pile. This is inspirational. (And thank you for not contaminating your video with a music bed!)

Would have loved to have seen more of the beautiful design that the side grain had rendered. I truly love to see bowls turned in this manner! Thank you.
Hi Harry, A beautiful little bowl. Fantastic finish on it as well. I think Pine is not used enough in woodturning as it has so much character. Great work Harry. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Beautiful little bowl, Harry. Please allow me to make three (I hope constructive) comments: Firstly, I think you should turn the flute of your gouge more to the direction it is moving. You are keeping it too "upright" or even backwards - and that is a recipe for a catch. Second - make sure your bottom "rim" is wide (thick) enough. These modern chucks have a lot of force and more that once they have split some of my bowls. And thirdly - but this is simply a matter of taste - you might have turned the bowl a little thinner. But all over - it is a nice piece for a young turner. Kind regards from an old (in years and experience) turner. And please forgive my English - it is not my home language.
Thanks Hennie! Really appreciate the feedback. I'm still learning everyday and this will certainly help me. As for your English, it is perfect. I only wish I could say thank you in your own language :)
Beautiful work Harry Smith. If I had one suggestion it would be to look up Sokolowski and get his Brilliant Finishes DVD. He spends more time on sanding then anything but his DVD changed my world. Everything I thought I knew about sanding and finish work was wrong if Im being honest. Once I applied his techniques to my pieces it was a total game changer. Gorgeous stuff though!
Dave Sullivan. Very nice looking bowl but I think I would have turned more of the inside of the bowl. What kind of finish did you use. Hope to turn something like it in the near future. Thank you for your work
I know it is not the popular opinion, but I always love the look of pine. I think it gets a bad rap sometimes. this is a beautiful bowl, I love the shape and the live edge left on like that. outstanding.
Can you consider putting the type of sealer, polish and/or wax you use to bring out such fine work? I am new to turning and being in Texas, we have a lot of pine and cedar/juniper here. Great work.
Absolutely Clay, I often put the type of finish in the description of the video, just don't tend to put the brand as my channel is multinational and UK brands aren't usually sold abroad. This piece was finished with Briwax 👍😊
Thanks for watching. I've got a relatively old Axminster lathe. Best to get a lathe with variable speed. There are so many choses of chisels, in this video I mostly use a fingernail profile spindle gouge. However it is best to use a bowl gouge for the hollowing of the bowl. Hope this helps
Hi Paully, yes the bowl was finished with a leather. I keep meaning to buy a moisture meter to check the wood before but I could tell this wood was bone dry and ready to turn, Thanks for watching! :)
Beautiful bowl! I am just starting to get into turning. I was curious was that a green bowl or did you dry that log and paint it with anchorseal and wait some ridiculous amount of time like 3 years for it to dry? I tried my hand at turning some green spruce. Silly me did this before my chuck arrived so I was only able to rough shape the outside with a faceplate....and it cracked that night....before my anchorseal was delivered as well.........Keep up the beautiful work!
This piece of pine was drying for around a year. I didn't seal it, just cut it from a fallen tree (the tree was fallen for a few months before I got to it) and put it in a warm dry place. It was bone dry a year later and ready to turn. Good luck with your turning and Thanks for watching 😀
@@HarrySmithWoodturning yes I know it is a crew chuck...I just like the fact that it presented a small face to the work and it was a dedicated screw chuck..I did finally find it at Craft Supplies and it is called PRECISION MACHINE 3-IN-1 SCREW CHUCK
Thank you for your concern, but I've injured myself more due to not wearing gloves than I have since wearing them. They are tight fitting and have no loose threads that can be caught. Hope you enjoyed the video

Great video. I turn a lot in pine and you are right, sometimes they break. LOL. Looked great. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Curtis. It's so annoying that Pine can become so brittle 😅

What type of oil or wax did use , i want to bring out the grain,as well giving it a nice shine like yours. Thanks.

What kind / brand of wax did you use?
Thanks Oscaro, glad you liked it! Lucky you, pine is truly beautiful. I used Briwax. 😁
Hi can you please tell me what size lathe chuck you used for that lovely piece
I only wish the lath had been stopped more often so we could see the intermediate progress alon the way. Impressive piece!

That gouge is absolutely flightless keep thinking you are using a roughing gouge.
Yeah it was a bit dull at the time. I've now learned the importance of keeping the chisels sharp. Thanks for watching! 😁😊
Maravilloso
Gracias Pedro. Suscríbete para más 😁👍
Beautiful work!
Just curious.... will the outer bark layer eventually separate from the inner bark at some point?
There is a possibility it will. But it was a really dry blank and has been waxed well so shouldn't do. Thanks for watching! :)
Interested in getting started in woodturning. What kind of lathe and tools are you using?

Definitely helps. Thank you much
the chuck bit you put wood on whats the proper name for it as i like the idea of not using a face plate but that idea
Thanks for watching, its called a PRECISION MACHINE 3-IN-1 SCREW CHUCK. I use it all the time 😁
Really nice, who would have guessed pine could be so attractive!
Did you finish with a chamois leather and how dry was the wood? Thanks! 👍
Hi Paully, yes the bowl was finished with a leather. I keep meaning to buy a moisture meter to check the wood before but I could tell this wood was bone dry and ready to turn, Thanks for watching! :)

Two questions, how dry was that log and what gouge did you use? It looks like a 5/8" bowl gouge but I'm not sure. Thanks
Thanks for watching Paul. The wood was very dry, it hardly weighted a thing. Its a 1/2 bowl gouge so not far off 😁👍
What is the attachment you put on your lathe that had the screw on it and who makes it...I would like to get one. Thanks
It's literally just called a screw chuck. Simple right?! They can be bought from any good woodturning shop or if that fails there's always Amazon! 😁

May I ask what kind of pine that is, looks different than what I'm used to.
Thanks for watching Lonnie, I'm almost 100% sure its scots pine, I checked the needles to be sure just after it fell 😄

That doesn't look like pine to me still nice job.
Thanks for watching Michael, I can assure you it was from a fallen Scots Pine. 👍
огонь!!!!
В огне? надеюсь нет 😅
Nice, pine is hard to turn.
Thank you, make sure you sub. Lots more to come! :)
Gloves? Rag? Scary!
No matter the technique, I'm always careful and ensure I don't put myself at risk. That being said people have different ways of getting the job done.

Wearing gloves while turning is not a good idea. DANGEROUS!
Thank you for your concern, but I've injured myself more due to not wearing gloves than I have since wearing them. They are tight fitting and have no loose threads that can be caught. Hope you enjoyed the video
