Wood Turning -A Shock Treatment for a Sublime Effect👍

  • A chestnut log receives a shock treatment to give it an incredible effect and stabilize it so that it retains its beauty forever.
Here I use a blowtorch with a powerful flame in two passes to dry and deepen the grain of the wood. (It's also an interesting technique to see how the chestnut tree reacts.) Then I use epoxy resin of different viscosities to penetrate deep into the wood and create a shiny effect.
This artistic project is accessible to beginners provided that you use carpentry tools with caution.
It is always in a spirit of sharing that I film part of my work in a calm and relaxing atmosphere without ASMR type speech or music.
    Good viewing!

Gorgeous bowl! Painting with fire is so much more deeper an effect than had you merely stained it. It gives the bowl an ancient feel yet modern at the same time. Love this. Thank you!

Yes and then the advantage of the resin is that the bowl is now fossilized and it will no longer move

Yes, in fact it is preferable to use a torch with a fine and powerful nozzle to be able to dig deep in several passes.
Here I made two passes but I could have done more.

That looked like an oxy acetylene welding torch you used to scorch the chestnut. I like it, it works so fast. Your gouge seems to have a very steep angle grind on it, or are my eyes going wonky? Is it sweet or horse chestnut? Questions questions eh? To be honest, I wasn't keen on the shape, but the finish was really nice. Best regards 🙃

    • @bawbreizhartwood
      @bawbreizhartwood  Рік тому

      Hi John
Yes indeed it is an acetylene torch whose flame can rise to 3000 degrees Celsius, it can do some nice things as long as you adjust it well.
I like to have several different angles on my bowl gouges because as this wood was very soft, a more open angle would have worked differently.
This log comes from a chestnut tree but which was cut at the start of winter.😉
