- Today's video I show you how we clean our front loading washing machine. I like to use baking soda and white vinegar where possible whilst cleaning and it works great on this washing machine. I will state that it has been over 2 years since we deep cleaned the washing machine so prepare yourself for lots of dirt and grime.

You missy, are such a breathe of fresh air, who wants to watch someone clean a slighty dirty home anyway? This is real for lots of us, it's hard to keep on top of stuff like this so if yours looks like that, chances are mine does too. That said I'm gonna tackle my machine tonight too..thanks again
Well done, no need to be ashamed of the dirty filter, many people have never been shown how it should be done. keep up the good work.
+Ruski Ryan thanks 😊
They are shown in the instruction manual that comes with the washer. It literally spells out how to care for the product.
It sates it in the instruction manual under care
Is it funny
Love the reality of having a dirty washer. Watched other videos with the process and they were all clean which really does not tell the story. Leaving the door open to allow it to dry is a huge help. Thanks for posting the video.
Thanks for showing the realness of a grubby washer. Many would clean theirs first before filming. Love ya x
Karen! You are precious! Thank you for this video and thank you for being so real and honest!
This was the best video of this process! You really shared the whole journey in detail! I'm going to clean mine asap! Lol
+lindseys lifeNstyle hopefully it will be cleaner than mine 🙈🙈 thanks Lindsey, I wanted to be sure to catch the whole process not just bits and pieces.

Great job! You've not only inspired me but also armed me with the knowledge I need to get this done. Wish me luck! Mark - Columbus, Ohio USA
Yep. A good habit to get into with front loaders is once a month run two cups of bleach through the dispenser on the hottest longest setting (or a dedicated tub clean setting on some washers) followed by 2 cups white vinegar on the same setting followed by plain water on the same setting(3 cycles). After a days washing always take the dispenser out and rinse, wipe the inside of the rubber seal and the inside glass with a cotton cloth then leave the dispenser and washer door open over night. Works a treat. Front loaders are well known for gathering odours..and never under any circumstances use fabric softner. Cheers
This is why I like my portable washing machine. The filter isn't "hidden" (just like the saying: "out of sight, out of mind", you tend to forget about it), and I can easily clean it after each wash, just like you would clean the lint filter after each cycle in the dryer. You'd be surprised how fast those filters collect stuff in it, when it's kept clean. Well... I'm speaking from my experience of the filter on my washer that is... I've never used a front loader washer before, so maybe it's different...
When I first bought my washing machine I was cleaning it and giving it a good wipe down after every use. A year or so later, I don't do it as often as I did! Recently I noticed that the conditioner wasn't going down. I think it's time to give it a good clean inside and out. I do use Calgon so don't understand why it's not going down as it should. Thanks for sharing a very realistic washing machine clean. I'm going to do it soon as I need the lovely smell of conditioner lol. Keep safe hunni. ❤👋🏻
Don’t be ashamed or apologize this is real good video,it supposed to be dirty before cleaning,Thanks a lot.
oh gosh i hated my front loader and switched to a top loader recently, it is such a pain to clean!! You did a great job!!🤗
Thank you, I hate this washing machine, it's been a pain since we moved in. I really wish we could get another one. Although I cannot believe I let it get so dirty and grubby :/ Thanks for watching.
Thanks for being so thorough with this video. I'm dreading going near the filter,,,,,it's never been cleaned.
Hopefully, it went better than mine
Thank you so much! Me and my sister managed to clean our washing machine for the first time, this video was a great help - unlike the manual.
another small tip is / after washing leave the door open all night so the drum can dry out, alot of the smell and mould build up is from the bacteria growing in the damp rubber seal , air dry the washing machine drum when not using it i found this helps alot with the build up of mould in the seal around the door
Good video , I always check the filter after a tub clean usually catches a lot of limescale after having bicarbonate of soda through it👍🏻
+Heide Davis oh I never knew thanks for the information. I have been checking it weekly, so far so good. Thank you for your comment 🍀
Always let the door and soap dispenser be open when you don’t use the mashine. Dry our the rim (where there is always left over water) with a towel 😊 nice video 😊😊
Good reason to maintain your machine. Owners manual tells you what needs to be done.
I'm thinking my front loader doesn't have a filter either. What a great job you did. If I pulled that out of my washer...well at the very least, I'd be gagging!
+Brande Arno oh I really wanted to gag, the smell 😬 thanks for watching 🍀🍀
Thank you for the demo … omg I need to clean mine ASAP ! brilliant info
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Very helpful. I wanted to see how you take out the dispenser, and You taught it very well.
I use soda crstals on mine helps wash the clothes makes them softer and cleans the washer after every wash go on a hot cycle boiling with soda le
Oh really, you but it in with your clothes?
OUR IRISH FAMILY I use soda crystals as well, don't put clothes in with it, just put it on a 90°, they really help with bad odours, but I do the filter itself, that kind for the video.
Edit: My friend does it but she puts the clothes in with it just not at a 90°
Hazel Holden tttttt
True make ur white clothes more whiter
@@OURIRISHFAMILY Wash clothes with 1 cup baking soda (added on top of clothes...not in the detergent reservoir) and fill fabric softer area with white vinegar. Clean clothes...no smell ever. The vinegar is an excellent fabric softener. Whitest whites too.
Never use bleach because it yellows the whites...once yellowed by bleach they will never get white again.
I have NEVER had a smelly wash machine...no residual soap on seal or in the filter. TRUE!
Leave the door open when not in use.
Liquid detergents are awful for residual soap build up on the seal and creating a smelly machine. and graying out whites.
it okey no problem I understand you. Some times is not easy for example when you are sick you can not do anything. Thanks for your response
From one Irish family to another, thank you 🙏
I always have my husband clean the filter. I can't.. . I just can't... LOL! It's good that you're making this video though because most people don't realize that this needs to be done. I have to say that I won't ever buy a front loading washer again.
+Mrs. Davis do u know if there is a filter on top loading washer? I only knew because I seen my mom cleaning her washer before we moved in this apartment. It's really a pain. I think top loaders are a way to go, although, they aren't readily available here in Ireland. Thanks for watching 😊
I've never ever in my life seen a filter on a top loader. And that's what I grew up with. I could be wrong though. They're so nice because you can soak things as well. I wonder why they aren't readily available in Ireland.. Our house came with a front loader as well. But when it dies or tears up, you better believe we will be getting a top loader!
Baking soda does wonders!!!! I use it for so many things!!! Great video
It has so many purposes, I've newly discovered vinegar as a cleaner too. Thanks for watching.
All good advice. One other thing you can do to clean the inside drum of the washer is to place mouthwash into say a spray polish plastic cap [the cap covering the top of the spray can] and place it inside the washing machine on it's own and run the washing machine on a short wash cycle. The mouthwash that has antibiotic cleans the bacteria inside the washing machine. Do once or twice a month
Hi, first off I love your videos! 👌🏼. You can't beat a couple of organisational videos every now and again 😂 Over the years my washing machine has ended up going manky a few times as well and I thought I'd share some tips on how I eventually managed to keep mine clean and also managed to save some money on detergents! :)
First off, I'd switch to a biological or non biological powder laundry detergent for everything (except delicates). The oxygen bleach in this helps to remove the dirt from your clothes and keep it away from the machine causing it all to be flushed out when the washing machine drains. Also when powder enters the water it dissolves. This is not the same as with liquid which is thicker to start with and is never completely diluted to the same fluidity of the water meaning it is harder to rinse off of clothes. Not great for people with sensitive skin or for baby/toddler clothing. Powder also tends to be cheaper and you can easily get away with using a store brand. (May I suggest lidl's 'Formil' powder in either green or blue box. Works wonders and is incredibly cheap, so I suggest you give it a try!! :)
Next up fabric softener: I love the stuff but it can really gunk up the insides of the machine if it's too thick, which most high end brands are. What I do is buy comfort blue skies (thickest and strongest of all Imo) take an empty conditioner bottle and basically split between the two, then just fill up with water. Because this stuff is so strong to start with, the scent is still there even when heavily diluted. When this goes on offer in tesco (usually £3 for 85 wash bottle) you can end up with enough softener to do 170 loads of laundry for just £3!!
Next, temperature: for darks/coloureds I like to stick with a 30 degree wash. Just makes them look better for letter and you also end up being more energy efficient. White cottons, 60 degrees just to blast them clean, but whites that aren't cotton and also bedlinen I like to do on a long 40. People suggest bedding on a higher wash but for me it just knackers it up :/ not great imo. And finally towels and kitchen stuff. Always on a 60/90 if possible, just stops them from going funky and from tea towels having the teatowely smell 😂 this is also how I get away with reusing dishsponges. If washed twice weekly in hot water, one can last about 6 weeks!
Anyway that's what works with me and many other people. Hope this can help you in the long run and others. Thanks for the great video :)
:)
+HOTPOINT ROCKS (Not!) thanks for those pointers. I agree about the fabric softener, you get way more than advertised from it. I've started washing towels at 60 😊 a few changes have helped.
OUR IRISH FAMILY va
Yes, mine smelled as well. My washer has a little hose right next to the filter on the left with a stopper on it. Pull out the hose and you can drain out as much water as you can in a cup. I also used a sided plastic tray at the end of releasing the water from this hose. Then there is not as much water that comes out of the round filter. Hopefully your washer has one Dirt FarmerJay video shows the hose. (if your's has one) Gloria
Oh my gosh you had me laughing!!! The " water doesn't look so good" made me laugh! I have a weak stomach can you can only imagine me over here. 😂😂. Good job though, you did it and it looked great at the end!!
+Style Mom XO it honestly was disgusting, I thought twice about uploading but I'm nothing if not honest on this journey. Thanks Kimberly ☺️
Thank you ,are towels been smelling bad from after washing .you really helped

Gosh, I've always had top loaders, and have always wanted a front loader. Our Maytag finally decided to quit working and leave oil all over the clothes, so, after doing research, I narrowed it down to a Maytag front and top loader. Really wanted the front loader, thinking it would be better for washing pillows and stuff that is difficult to wash in a top loader, but, upon looking at the two choices, my husband said he preferred the top loader, as, a former plumber, he knows the pitfalls, and I was a tad bit disappointed on not getting a front loader. NOW, seeing how much cleaning you have to do for one, boy, did I did I dodge a bullet!! I didn't realize there was so much stuff to wash in a front loader!!!!!!!!!!!! With my Maytag top loader, it has a "wash with affresh" cycle and the light blinks off and on when its time to clean the washing machine. All I do is drop in the crystals from the packet and wipe down the washing machine with the wipes. Now, I'm wondering if top loaders have a filter, too, that needs to be cleaned. I had my first Maytag top loader for twenty one years and I never knew about the filter or that it needed to be cleaned. Guess I better check it out. Very informative video/tutorial. Very informative. Opened my eyes to all sorts of things. Thanks for posting it.
If you keep on top of the cleaning of the front loader, I've heard they are the better washer. Although I don't have experience of a top loader. Don't be me and ignore the cleaning 😝
Thank you so much for sharing. My model of Whirlpool does not have a filter, however, a message and yellow signal light appears when it's time to clean. Yes, I also discovered how important it is to clean inside the rubber. Thanks again.
+jasmia boyd I'd love a newer machine with no filter 😂 thanks for commenting
I have a new washer with many bells and whistles, but it comes with a filter
Thank you very much,
it's really very help.
how much baking soda and vinegar do you mix in your spray bottle
Well done well impressed ,doing mine tomorrow ,KIM ,,from Devon UK
Thanks for nice video! M going to do the same with my 3 years old front loader 😀. Expecting something very sluggish. This is gonna help. Thanks for helping people.
+geeta singh hopefully it won't be too bad. Mine is great after cleaning and I make sure to check the filter every month or so.
Great video. I learnt a lot. Thank you very much.
+SYED MUDASIR thanks for your comment
Mixing baking soda and vinegar together neutralizes the vinegar and baking soda properties - waste of time and money. The only thing you get from this is a mild abrasive from the baking soda. The better way is to use one or the other separately in a complete wash cycle. Then do the other in another complete wash cycle. My preference would be to just use the vinegar.
Excellent point. Mixing different cleaning agents is equivalent to turning your home in to a chemistry lab. I knew of a maintenance fella who was moping floors in a restaurant after hours. He worked after the staff left. He mixed bleach with another cleaner - or used one after the other. A chemical reaction ensued. He was found the next morning on the floor with a collapsed lung. He developed a (chemical) pneumonia from inhaling the chlorine gas. He was rushed to the hospital. Luckily he survived.
I made this point, you're left with salty water. Your mixing a base with an acid, it's akin to mixing boiling water with ice cube. People see the fizz and thing deep clean.
It's the same with the cowardly acid attacks. Mostly it's a base like drain cleaner. What should you use to neutralise? An acid, you add water or a base (bicarb mostly) you'll make it worse.
To clean your machine use an acid, set it to 60-90c and run the full cycle. Also that bad build up is soap scum and materials from clothing. Check your pockets and inner lining to remove fluff.
The best solution to reduce build up is not using too much soap. Less is more, 2 *maximum 3* table spoons is more than enough. Anything above this is mostly building up inside your machine. Then with organic matter it rots, hence that lovely smell.
ACID IS YOUR FRIEND, don't use a base to clean soap!
PS, excess soap is also bad for your skin.
@@Gunzee thank you! it makes perfect sense.
The reaction of vinegar poured on soda helps dislodging mold .it is a good strategy.
I don't know the exact chemical reaction but I use that same mix cleaning my roasting pan. I was skeptical for the same reason but it actually works. Try it. Baking soda + Vinegar + Salt.
Great content May natutunan n nmn ako how to clean washing machine
You also need to leave the detergent/fabric softener dispenser drawer open at least half way after finishing laundry. Since learning that I no longer have any mold at all.
Oh I’ve never heard that, I’ll give it a go
Would make sense ! Thanks
Good girl Karen...that was A1.
The best video on tackling this stinky problem. Thank you!
IRISH FAMILY
thank you
Front loaders need frequent cleaning. I was surprised she dumped the gunk from the filter into the kitchen sink.
Being honest and real makes you beautiful.
hi I use soda crystals with everything even with clothes in it helps soften the clothes as well
You are the second person to mention this, I must try it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Great job I used to have a filter like that.My new machine doesn't have a filter I can get to and drying the seal, drum and door after every use really helps.Leaving the door slightly open is the way to go
Leaving the door open helps so much. What brand is your new machine?
Omg I just got a new washing machine I will check my filters once a month now

Plz can I use only vinegar and hot water for the cleaning? Thanks a lot for the video
Great sharing. I am going to do it now. Thank you!
+Alex Chan good luck, I'm sure it can't be any worse than mine 😊
Oh God, I was given a second hand washer 3 and a half years ago and never thought to clean the filter, I've cleaned other parts often but never the filter, I dread to think what it's gonna be like 😭
It can't be as bad as mine was, that was pretty awful! Hopefully, yours is less dirty.
I tried but couldn't get the cap off, ended up snapping some plastic :|
Wow great job. Often we miss out certain things by mistake.
..Or by sheer laziness..like me🤦♂️🤯🤷♂️!
Thank you so much I learned a lot from what you did👍🏽
Glad I could help you, thanks for the comment :)
Try emptying all the pockets of your shirts and pants, before you wash that will help great video.
And shaving your cat too 😹
Thanks for your video. Very very helpful.
I appreciate this video very much!
Thanks for the tips!
Your washer filter was rich! (Saw money in it)
Thanks sharing Karen...my idea cleaning ours is bleach.
+sonya brennan usually I'm one for bleach too, but since I cleaned it the clothes have been coming out so fresh smelling. I think I'll keep up with the baking soda and vinegar. Thanks Sonya.
You can purchase the correct professional product for washing machines here: amzn.to/3Qi8sHZ
I'm going to do this tomorrow!!
+Caras Life on the Farm if u have a front loader, it will have a filter, good luck can't be any worse than mine 😂 thanks for watching.
Do the baking soda and vinegar prior to opening the basket below, to eliminate the horrible smell.
Directions:
Spray vinegar inside the drum and between the drums and boot. Use cleaner with bleach if mold and mildew is present
Remove the soap dispenser (clean soap dispenser and area)
Add one cup of baking soda and slowly pour one cup of vinegar. (Pouring too fast it will get everywhere)
Let that sit for 2-3 days. The longer the better
Run your next load on the hottest setting
Note. Always run the spin cycle at medium or slower to prevent the banging. This could also prevent the washer from damage due to an unbalanced load.
i was number 1000 to like :-)
Wow...thank you for this video, i learned from it. 👏👏👏
Baking Soda + Vinegar = Salty water right?
I think that's the problem with renting units. People behave badly, not caring for anything around. I had a washer similar to the one in the video (European model of late 90s). I never had to do a thorough cleaning like this. And my filter, was quite clean after 2 years.
I'm sure your mildew will be eliminated by not closing the machine door directly after using the washer, wait for it to dry first.
+Phil Melson yes I've found this to be true since I've started this practice. It's funny how something so simple can help 😊
Thank u for sharing this video..bee safe..new fun here..frm S.korea
I use about 1 litre of vinegar and a half box of bakin soda do it good or not at all
New subie ❤️ hon the irish
Good work that was very useful thank you very much
thanks. I will do it this weekend.
The Black Gunk you see in the bottom reservoir is from LIQUID DETERGENT, as its made out of animal fat and the left over animal fat over time turns black and very smelly. So you can eliminate that just by switching to POWDER DETERGENT, Problem solved :) But you still need to clean the reservoir (Bottom corner of your machine) every 6 months and the inside of your washing machine on the hottest setting with no clothes in it with 2 cups of baking soda directly inside the machine and your inside of your powder/liquid container at least monthly. To keep it nice and fresh :)
Wash clothes with 1 cup baking soda (added on top of clothes...not in the detergent reservoir) and fill fabric softer area with white vinegar. Clean clothes...no smell ever. The vinegar is an excellent fabric softener. Whitest whites too.
Never use bleach because it yellows the whites...once yellowed by bleach they will never get white again.

Um, Thank you!!!! Im so glad I've subscribed! You're proving to be useful lol
The vinegar would of dropped straight out of the holes on the bottom of the door seal lol
Hi, I have a weird “cocaine” smell coming out of my machine, the filter is clean, will this help, I already cleaned the rubber but the smell is still here.
Great video, cheers.
to clean washer put on a boiling cycle with either cotton wear ie sheets off the bed
soda crystals and washing powder as normal plus fabric conditioner
That is black mold. You need gloves on to clean that. Bottom line. Always leave your washer lid open between washes. The washer drum CANNOT dry if the lid is closed. The washer drum and things you can't readily see will grow mold and/or mildew if the lid is closed. If you have a top-loader, leave the washer lid open in between washes. If you have a front-loader, leave the washer lid and trays and filter doors open between washes (I don't buy front-loaders for this very reason). Also, why use detergents and fabric softeners that have artificial dyes and artificial fragrances in them? I use dye-free and fragrance-free detergents and softeners. The same principle goes for the dishwasher. The lid should always be left open slightly or you will grow mold and/or mildew in there. The same principle goes for the bathroom. If the door is always closed (and there is no window to allow moisture to dry) the moisture will mold and/or mildew.
👍❤
Your performance is very much appreciated.🤗🤗🤗
Cleaning the filter and the machine itself fixes the problem.
Pouring vinegar on baking soda is entirely pointless. They react and neutralise each other making a salt (Sodium Acetate).
That's why it fizzed then stopped.
I think what was in your filter was a dead leprechaun
At 3.30 min did you washed a bear or 20 cats?
it's holiday so I'm gonna do this ...let's see the results..by the way thanks..you talking so naturally...😀😀
+Jaivishal Gohel good luck, have fun. Thank you for your comment and watching 😊👍🏻
🙏
That was so helpful thanks
I'm sorry but don't add vinegar to the draw, I mean it will definitely clean the machine but I know that vinegar will wreck the drum bearings seals in no time at all. Before you know it your drum will be wobbly and then dangerous. Always best to use a dedicated cleaner on a hot wash.
mine doesnt have a cleanout on the front like that.
Hi flower can I ask does all washing machines have one just Mr m has just had a look at ours and he can't seem to see one I 'll let you no if we find it hope you are all keeping well zxxxxxxxxx
Any luck with that ? I'm looking at my washer machine now thinking this will be a good Sunday afternoon project.
10 thumbs up my dear!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
two top tips, vinegar ruins the rubber seals in washing machines, so don't use, next tip is that loose pocket change coins end up in the filter, so its like a piggy bank, wash green colored coins with coca cola or vinegar
but be careful with the vinegar it will make you feel sore throat, or head burning
Thank you for your warning :)
You are welcome
Might be better to wash after a hot wash
For God sake, what are you washing in this washing machine??? :O
What temperature do you wash your clothes at?
Hi, I usually wash my clothes at 30 or 40 degrees. It really varies every wash.
Karen H Ireland do you wash towels and bedding at 60°C? And do you use the dryer on it?
+Washing Machine Guy 20 yeah there is a dryer in it, I'd love to break it so I can get a new one from the landlord 🙊 no I wash towels at 40. Should I wash them at 60?
Karen H Ireland it can clean them better and less mould build up. And my Nan has the same machine and she got it with the house aswell. I like it. It does a good job! And the reason there is a lot of gunk in the filter is because the dryer can produce fluff when drying clothes so it's best to clean the filter twice a month I'd say.
+Washing Machine Guy 20 thank you, I've been checking it weekly since I cleaned it and plan to run a cleaning cycle again. I will def clean my sheets at 60, I have a load waiting to go
thanks for the information :)
I cannot understand why you mix soda crystals with white vinegar - one is an alkali & the other an acid.
Surely they should be used separately to get their individual benefits
What about using borax?
Never seen washer filter in my life as dirty as that York
