Thank you! Try not ‘flicking’ the yarn around the needle - but holding the yarn still & slightly above and then grabbing it with the left hand needle. Kind of like continental knitting with the other hand - if that makes sense. I love to knit backwards! Especially for sock heels or blankets! No turning it round!
Jana, you are just an awesome person and teacher. I thank you for all of your videos and the techniques you show really do help improve people's knitting skills.
Everyone seems to talk about hating to purl, but I don’t really mind it. With a couple hundred stitches, I get into a rhythm and it feels just as soothing as knitting to me. Thanks for the introduction to backwards knitting as an alternative.
I have being searching for the way I couldn't get best before I choose and instead of watching beginner knitting tutorials, watched many a video learning -> How to avoid... How to [hacks]... How to improve... this n that. I personally love the Russian purl. I am eagerly awaiting what you have to say here, because this sounds interesting.
I often find purling painful, thank you fibromyalgia... also it usually felt... floppy, like it was loose, which caused me to tense up trying to fight that... I taught myself to backward knit, which is an entirely unnatural feeling thing to do, but, it doesn't hurt my hands and my tension is perfect with it... I even find that doing a guage swatch of stockinette flat will perfectly match my guage in the round.
Thank you for this helpful and informative tutorial on backwards knitting. It's a technique that I'm willing to try. Off topic: I'm an English knitter. I'm confused about the concept of "yos" done in the continental syle because the "yos" aren't "completely wrapped around the needle" as in the English style. I'm considering learning how to knit continental style, as it seems like fewer hands motions especially on circular needles. Your thoughts...
I do this when i work stockinette or work lace & does lace work on RS or cabling on RS. I tend to go faster with backwards knitting & i also kno how to reverse increase & decrease so if i have to do increases or decreases on my WS i can do it without messing up my tension
@PurlTogether ... it's my version of how a dyslexic might see or spell the word, according to what I understand from a friend of mine who is dyslexic. It was my way of saying and now I am completely turned around. But that is because I had not seen my million and 1th video discovering various ways to work my hands to finally be able to knit. And I can get things backwards sometimes, So I just may be undiagnosed.... but I know how to knit now and I know 7 ways to purl! I never saw your response three years ago , but only just today. It was said before I had learned how to knit because you made me believe I could - except that I couldn't to hold my yarn in that hand because I'm a righty crocheter, so I hadda learn from someone else - but you gave me the confidence. Though I visit your channel frequently, I don't know how to translate what I see you do into me using my left hand holding the yarn, as I once again become slydexic. But I only put it together and bought some easier-to-use circular knitting needles a week ago. They were just some cheapy Boye aluminums but they seem to have a nice point and I've already worn some of the blue color off of them!
Thank you!

Thank you I heard about backwards knitting but never saw anyone doing this. I will be giving this a try.

Very interesting but would take some getting use to. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thank you! Did not know this was a thing! I have dreaded many a full on purl row!

A friend helped me with socks years ago and I learned this. Might have to give it a whirl again. Good for the brain if nothing else. Thanks Jana.

Nice. TY
Interesting new technique to try. thx. But I don't mind purling once I get going. But it's nice to learn something new.
"sloth together" - LOL. Thanks for this. I'll have to practice.

I enjoyed that. I like backward knitting for doing Entralac.
Right! Good application
Very interesting! 😊
I’ve tried this and I like it, but I’ll maybe use it after I “perfect” my purling lol. Thanks for sharing this!
