Just because you're not first doesn't mean it's not brilliant! Thanks for sharing your revelation with the rest of us!! And even better, you have given everyone a great tool to make the math fast and easy! Thank you!!!
O, joy, joy! No more too short or too long cast on yarn issues! It’s been inevitable that I err one way or the other every single time I cast on! What a godsend. Many, many thanks! ❤️🙏🏼❤️
Thank you so much Jan! Just because someone else has figured this out before doesn't mean that you aren't smart!! You are smart! I will be testing your calculator out soon when I start the front piece of the vest am working on. Thanks again!
I just used your calculator to cast on my first ever DK socks & ended up with a 3 inch tail, just enough to weave in. Absolutely awesome! Thank you again!
Good morning Lass, i have NEVER EVER been able to do the long tail cast on and so revert to my tried and tested (the one mum taught me when i started learning to knit) the cable cast on (which i didn't know it was called that either until a couple of years ago...I'm 57 now). Thank you flower for working this out for me in a way that i can get it to work, i do truly appreciate your brain power in even tackling this annoyance for me and others. Hey, we are having the first dry, 10degrees centigrade, so for us Scots, lovely and warm easter in years, but we too can have all four seasons in the one day, lol. Thank you flower and have a great day, hope you have more than one dandelion out now. Crafty hugs, Norah, Glenochil, Central Scotland
Love this calculator, no more unraveling and starting again. One thing that I tried it with is the German long tail cast on. Over 40 stitches I lost 1.5 inches from my 8 inch tail so will calculate that in. Thank you Jana
Hi Jana , thanks so much for the calculator. For a beginner like me it’s wonderful! One less thing to try to work out. I have watched lots of your tutorials and you have helped me more than you will ever know. Have a great day, Cheryl
I can attest that the calculator works! I used it to determine how much yarn I needed for a project I cast on yesterday. Used the amount of yarn the calculator indicated and added 5 inches. When I finished casting on all my stitches I had a 5 inch tail!!! Jana, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Oh good! I have always used the cable cast on because I never got the hang of estimating how much yarn to use, now I can finally try the long tail method. Thank you!!
WOW, what a relief. I just had to cast on 200 stitches and took me 30 mins because I didn't have enough. As soon as I receive the link, I will try. Thank you🤗🤗 Also, I will send back a comment. 👍🏼
Thank you! I usually do the cable cast on method because I’m fed up playing yarn chicken when casting on! I googled other methods but yours is really the easiest. I will do a swatch and get back to you but I’m sure, you being you, that you’ve thoroughly checked and tested this. So again thank you 🤩🤯
Thank you so much for this formula! I tested with long tail cast on versus Norwegian cast on, which I often use for socks. For long tail it’s perfect with an additional tail end of 20cm and for Norwegian it works better with an extra of 25 cm tail end. Thank you so much for sharing❣️
Brilliant! I continually end up with way too much yarn doing the knit 10 stitches and multiply method. I could never understand why. Many thanks for this Jana! I’m excited too!
I stopped using the long tail cast on because i am horrible at estimating the yarn amount and always way over estimated it and wasted yarn. Thankyou for this! You should make an app and offer it on the app stores, the ad revenue would be awesome!
Love your self-deprecating humor, Jana 😂. Can’t wait to try this out. So many times I’ve had to CO more than once because my tail was too short. Thanks for sharing. Now I can use it on the Mahina cardigan. 👏
Yea, Jana!!! You're so smart!! Maybe someone figured this out sooner, but not to the benefit of thousands!!!! ❤ You're most kind to share this with all of us who are big fans! So a huge thank you. 😊 Happy Easter season to you and your loved ones! Also, may spring be right around the corner in the best ways!! ❤
Thank you so much. I have numerous French knitters who love and use your videos even if they do not speak English. They are able to understand since you explain and demonstrate so well. Many thanks from many French knitters from Quebec❤
Amazing! For years, I have been using my arms' span to calculate my LT cast on stitches. Thank you so much for this wonderful tool. It is truly a godsend only because it works.
I too am awed by your thinking, Jana ! - and by your being able to translate it into something simple and practical for we who don't have your kind of brain. :) It's getting late for me (being ancient), so I'm about to go to bed. But in the morning, once I've had my blueberries and Greek yoghurt for breakfast, I am going to USE IT !! - and how I am looking forward to doing so !! I thank you very sincerely: your cleverness is going to be of great assistance to a dyed-in-the-wool crocheter who is about to return to almost-entirely-forgotten brioche knitting.
My head spun around when I saw the math formula😮. Thank you soooo much for providing the calculator! I look forward to keeping up with your happenings.
I just found your video and definitely signed up for the calculator and newsletter. This is genius and I will be trying this out. Looking forward to more of what you have in store for your subscribers. Thank you ❤
Thank you so much for sharing Jana!!! I can't wait to try it out! Your kindness and thoughtfulness in sharing your hard work is very much appreciated!!
Awesome to have the calculation, Jana! However, if one of your aims is to grow your email list, you may want to edit the video to blank out the URL to the calculator - you can simply type it in and get straight to the webpage without signing up…
Genius! I wish I'd seen this before I had to cast on 375 stitches!! I ended up with a knitted cast-on, which is fine for what I'm doing, but this will be a game-changer for sure!
Interesting that this works, because the tail end that you use for the cast-on does not wrap around the needle, just forms the loop that sits below it. The end going to the ball will be the one that creates the loop on the needle. But hey ho, if it works (according to your testing), it works 🙂
I'm excited right along with you. I've recently been exploring short tail cast ons since it bugs me gestimating the long tail length. I usually err on the side of caution and end up with a much longer tail than needed. I don't mind doing the math myself. When I tried the math with the numbers from your example, I came up with 20.1" without any rounding, but I used 3.14159 for pi.
Tip: When measuring your yarn, do not stretch it too much (if at all) otherwise your long tail will be too short. I didn't read through all the comments, so someone else may have mentioned that.
This is genius! The question I have is I usually do an old norwegian cast on or german twisted cast on and I know that it takes more yarn than a standard long tail cast on, how would you calculate for that? Thank you for providing this absolutely time saving brilliant calculator.
Omg this is incredible! Thank you! Suggestion: on the calculator, indicate where the slip knot should be. E.g., if the calculator results in 89 inches (3.75mm needles, 192 stitches) + 6” for a tail, where should the slip not be? It should be at 89 + 6 = 95”, correct?
Dang. I used both the actual formula and the calculator to determine the length needed to CO 204 sts of Léttlopi yarn using 3.75mm needles. I came up with around 96” + 6” for the tail to place the slip knot = 102”. It didn’t work 😢 I tried it 3 times, then decided to CO using two skeins. Then, I unraveled the cast on stitches and measured the length to the slip knot. It was more like 144” (including the 6” tail). Any suggestions?
Couldn’t make it work for socks, which I knit all the time. 2.25 mm needles and 72 stitches was 20.03”. I rounded up to 21” added 8” for tail and got 62 stitches andleft with a 4” tail. And that was on a 2 mm needle just one of my tries to see if u could eke out the missing 10 stitches. To be fair it’s not something I need. I was just trying it for the fun of it and because you asked for feedback good luck with this!
@@annecohen8185 I see. I haven't taken the time to do that because most stitch gauges and needles in the US have both measurements printed on them. Are you in the US?
2:49 4th line should read cm not mm after dividing by 10
Thanks. I'll pin your comment to the top since I cannot edit the video once it's unloaded.
Just because someone else came up with it first doesn’t detract from your genius inspiration. I am in awe.
Aw, thanks so much!

Going to check this out now, but just wanted to let you know that your excitement and generosity are contagious. Thank you!
Thanks for your “Public Service Announcement”. We knitters are a motley crew who share, and share, and share . . . Thanks!!

Thanks heaps for this. Very appreciative. Now shared this podcast to my knitting group. Cheerio from New Zealand ❤
Yay, thanks for sharing it!
Thank you Jana! I’m glad your using metric. I think we’re in our 4th winter in Alberta, Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you so much for this calculator, I always thought there was probably a method to use aside from wrapping yarn around a needle. Great video’s!
THIS WORKED PERFECTLY!! Thank you so much for sharing this with everyone. I just used it for 53 stitches on 4mm needles. Perfect the first time!!
Wonderful!
Thank you Jana I will certainly sign up! Always a bit hit and miss with my guesswork. Look forward to trying this on my next project xx
Thank you….I used the calculator last evening and it was spectacular! What a game changer. 😊
Now we have to swatch??? Haha, no I will. Thank you for the calcator and explanation ❤
Yep! Swatching is awesome ;)
It worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks for making us aware of this tool. Barbara
Thank you for your sharing this calculator. It is a game changer. I really enjoy your vlogs. From a New Zealand (southern Hemisphere) subscriber.
Me too from Auckland NZ.
Me three from Ōtautahi- Christchurch, NZ 😊
Thank you, Jana! You’ve put any amazing tool out there and I tried it today…. It awesome and way faster than wrapping it around my needle 😀
Glad it was helpful!

Love this, Jana! Thank you for thinking it through (even if it has been thought of before) and taking the time to make it available to all of us.
Thank you for sharing the long tail calculator. I used it today and it calculated wonderfully!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm so excited for this! I'm starting a new project over Easter, so how lucky am I that I get to test out your calculator! Yay!

Thanks, That makes sense. So someone else did it, but you still figured it out. Now I have my calculator, I’ll have to give it a try.
Thank you for providing the calculator, appreciate it very very much
🎉 neat! Love a little math BTW! Will try this on my next socks. We can always enjoy that wonderful feeling of discovery...it is new to us! Love it!
Thanks for sharing this awesome tool‼️
Hi Jan You should be very proud of yourself😀 Thank you for the awesome calculator, you are Awesome😀 Sending big hugs💞💞
I am happy you found it!!❤❤❤
Wow! Thank you so much! I have started over so many times!
Terrific!! Heading on over. Many thanks; I suspect I'll be using the calculator a lot. Kudos to you.
I'm sure we'll love your calculator more 😊

Novice knitter here. I can't want for my next cast on to give this a try.
This sounds terrific. I’d really like to try it. Thanks so much.
Oh. I'm excited to try this out. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it's going to help me a lot!
Wonderful addition to my tools. Thank you so much.

Very cool! Thanks for sharing this amazing tool!
Yeah you! Thank you.
Thank you so much. I’ll try this on my next cast on 👍🏻
Simply wonderful!
Very cool idea!! Thanks!!
Thank you. I will let you know how it works the next time I cast something on.
Thank you so much, Jana! ❤
Brilliant! Thank you so MUCH!!!
Thanks you for sharing this tutorial 🎉🎉
Okay this is very cool!!! Thank you!!
Aw fantastic. Can't wait to try it! ❤

So awsome !!!! I'll test it very soon ❤
Excellent!!
I love your glasses!! May I ask where you found them?
Thanks! I ordered them from zenni.com
Thank you!🎉

Thank you for the feedback. Are you normally a tighter knitter?
This is awesome. Could you add a chart to the page to convert us size to mm?
When you use the calculator, the results will be given in both centimeters and inches. If you need millimeters, but multiply the centimeters by 10
@@PurlTogether what I meant was the conversion from us size to millimeter size. Like us9 is 5.5 mm
