Just bought my first ZZ plant yesterday ("ZamZam"). I'm excited 😊 My two main concerns are not overwatering it and pests (yikes). Will be replaying this video for sure. Thanks much!
Hi Celeste, Congrats on your ZZ plant! These plants are easy to care for. Just make sure the soil is bone dry all the way through (or use the soil moisture meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc) and check your plant's leaves and stems frequent to catch any issue early. May your plant grow happy and healthy! Thank you for watching! Green Cheers! 🌱
I added watering my ZZ to my "first of each month" tasks. It's thriving and I don't risk overwatering or over neglecting. I don't have to remember if I have or haven't watered.
I enjoyed watching this informational video on ZZ plant. I live in Maryland where we get all 4 seasons. I like to put my ZZ plant outside in spring and summer and then in fall soon as I see temps getting below 60 at night. I bring it inside and my ZZ just GROWS!
I use a few air purifiers in my house in the winter. The plants closest to it grow like crazy, a zz plant being one of them (it grows slow but I think fast for a zz)! I think they really enjoy the wind from the air purifier or something! Honestly I didnt think they would appreciate it but they really like it! They are near a west window and the other purifier is near an east window. The ones further from it don't grow as profusely even though they are getting similar sun. I think it maybe simulates wind a bit because the smaller leaves on some of my plants can be seen kind of moving like there is a breeze. I was watering the zz when the soil was completly dry but I don't think it likes that. It needs to stay dry for a while before I water again and I noticed more growth watering like that. I water it maybe once a month only and its in a 6in pot. I havent completely figured out the zz yet, I think it can grow even faster than it does.
Hi Mike, Thank you for sharing! 🌱 With proper light and a good air circulation, these plants do grow faster! Less is more for ZZ - your watering strategy is right on point 👏

Hi! 😀😀😀 Glad you got the Meter. Maybe you have too many plants? 😀 If you have a very busy life style, I would recommend to reduce the quantity of plants so you do not feel overwhelmed or stressed and can provide a proper care for them 😀 Thank you for watching 🌱
Great video Juliette! I'd love your advice for a small zz plant in my low light bedroom: the tip (4-5 mm) of a few leaves have turned yellow. What could be the cause? I might have been slow at watering it this summer, but pretty sure I watered it at least once a month. My hunch is that it would benefit from being vaporised with water about once a week. What do you think? I have a new gorgeous medium-size zz plant and I want to make sure it will be happy (in my low light corridor).
Hi Malichka, If you can not read a book in your bedroom or a corridor in the middle of the day without turning the light on, then the light exposure is too low for any plant to grow. Yellowing can be the result of insufficient light or improper watering. I recommend getting the Soil Moisture meter mycityplants.com/products/soil-moisture-meter to help you to establish a proper watering frequency. Test the soil once every 2-3 weeks with the meter. When the meter results are in zone 1, wait for 7-10 days more (small plants) and 14-20 days more (large plants) and then water your ZZ plants. May your ZZ plants grow healthy and happy! Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi Cindy, You may prune overgrown stems back or support them. In this video we are showing how to add support: ua-cam.com/video/vgFoAe3OMco/v-deo.html Green Cheers 🌱
Hello, I’m anew ZZ Plant parent :) I’ve had it for about 3 months now. I bought a ZZ online and when it came, it was super wet and most of the soil fell out during delivery. I repotted them in a slightly larger pot, cleaned off the leaves and stems, and cut any mushy roots it had (there were very few, the other roots are in great condition) and it’s starting to recover. I haven’t watered them yet as I know they store water in their rhizomes but I’ve noticed one of the rhizomes is wrinkly. Idk if that’s a concern. My ZZ was very moist when it came so I wonder if it was overwatered and that’s why? I’ve also noticed some traits of edema showing up on some of my leaves and some of the tips are black. I’m not sure if it’s because the plant was so wet when it arrived or if it’s just acclimating still to the new environment. Most of the leaves are healthy though and the other rhizomes are healthy too. Any ideas of where to go from here?
Hi Sani, Sounds like you did everything right with the repotting and root pruning. ZZ plant was wet probably because it was watered in the store or garden center right before you got it and, based on the issue description, was watered too much for some time. ZZ plant bulbs get wrinkled if the plant is overwatered (sounds like this is the case with your plant) or if it dries out too much. Also, old bulbs get replaced with new ones naturally so no worries if one or two will dry out and wrinkle. Make sure the ZZ plant is in good quality well draining potting soil and pot has drainage. Place it in the spot where the plant gets bright light (indirect sun is best but a couple of hours of sun bathing will be ok). Fertilize your plant Spring - Summer. Here is our video about when and how to feed houseplants bit.ly/3teZEaw May your plant recover and grow happy and healthy! Thank you for watching 🌱
@@Mycityplants thank you for the response! I will try my best to help them spring back. I've placed them into a well draining pot and the soil mix is good. They're hanging in there. Hopefully they make it into Spring. Thank you :)
Hi I am from Guatemala, I be watching you videos and I like the way you explain Why my ZZ plants don't produce babies I'm doing something wrong. Can you help me out thank you so much
Hi Carlos, Thank you for watching 🌱 - Make sure your ZZ plant gets a good amount of light. Brighter the light, faster the plant will grow. - ZZ plants prefer a tighter pot - 2-3 inches larger than the root system. Drainage is important ! - Allow the soil to get completely dry ,all the way through, before watering your plant. - Feed your plant from March to September. Here is my favorite plant food that does not burn roots and can be used every time you water your ZZ plant mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer Watch my video when and how to fertilize plants bit.ly/3teZEaw Green Cheers!
Hi! Thank you for watching! The stripes on ZZ plant stems usually indicate the overwatering issue. It important to allow the soil to dry out completely and all the way through before watering. *** Using the soil moisture meter will help you to establish a proper watering frequency. Learn about how to use this tool + find the moisture chart here: mycityplants.com/plant-care/how-to-use-soil-moisture-meter/ May your ZZ plant grow happy and healthy!
Thank you so much for your care guide! I have a ZZ plant I know you stated it needed in-direct light, can I put my ZZ plant outside in the summer months will it burn the leafs?
As long as you are not put it under direct sunlight I guess it's ok. You can put it under the shade or you can put it on your terrace or balcony or any place with 2-4 hours indirect light. Its according to my experience..
Hi Wanda, Thank you for watching 🌱 Yes, you may place your ZZ plant outside during warm seasons. This plant can handle a few hours of direct sun. Morning sun is gentle and most plants will enjoy it. Just remember to rotate the plant often if it is exposed to sun rays. Green Cheers!
Hi! - Trim ZZ plant leaves near the petiole (where the leaf joins the stem) - Use multiple leaf cuttings instead of a single leaf for better results - Allow leaf ends to callus over (few hours) - Place healthy cuttings in a narrow glass with enough water to cover the ends - Position under bright, indirect light - Change water weekly or when looks cloudy - Repot in soil once new roots appear Green Luck! 🪴
@Mycityplants hi julia It worked Qq Some leaves formed rhizome s while still in water and green leave started to be born upwards from there However roots are still few mm can i plant into soil as already done with those who formed 3 cm roots?
Hi! I am glad your propagation of ZZ is successful! Yes, you may place leaves with shorter new roots in the soil but for a better result I recommend to wait a bit longer. Green Cheers!
My medium size zz plant is a conundrum to me. I had it for several months and it keeps getting yellow leaves and quite often, even entire yellow stems, but I’m not sure why. It’s not getting under or over-watered, it has some natural light and a grow light nearby, it isn’t near a cold draft, and I took it out of the pot to check out the roots in case something was happening inside, and literally NOTHING. I have no idea why the plant keeps loosing entire stems or producing yellow leaves. It’s my firs zz plant and I thought it would be a breeze but I think there is something wrong with it and I can’t find the issue. Very frustrating, especially for a plant that everyone raves about because it’s supposedly “easy going” 😒🤷🏻♀️
Hello Florecita, Usually yellowing of leaves and stems is due to watering issue. Can also be the result of fertilizing issue (too much). - Soil porosity + drainage are important!!! - Water the plant ONLY when the soil is completely dry, all the way through. - When watering, make sure to use enough water so it can reach lower roots. *** Get the soil moisture meter: mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-plant-tools/products/soil-moisture-meter Test the soil once every 7-10 days. Wait for the meter reading to go down to zone 1 + add 7-10 more days before watering. - Do not allow the plant to sit in water after watering. - Do not fertilize until Spring. Feed every time you water from March-September. *** best to use half of the recommended amount of fertilizer (unless you are using this plant food: mycityplants.com/collections/fertilizers/products/all-purpose-fertilizer) May your plant grow happy and healthy! Green Luck, and thank you for watching 🌱
@@Mycityplants These are fantastic tips but I’m actually already doing all of these things and still the yellowing is happening. The soil is one third all purpose, one third cactus, one third perlite, so it has good aeration. The pot is only a bit bigger than the roots (not oversized to allow too much soil). The plant is getting water every 3-4 weeks when the soil is completely dry. The saucer under the plant is actually not touching the bottom of the planter so the plant never seats on water (in case I forget to empty the saucer which so far I haven’t done). I use a moisture meter regularly. It has only been fertilized once because when I saw the first yellowing I wasn’t sure if it might was the fertilizer so I stopped. The roots look great so I didn’t see any type of infection or rotting. The temperature in my home is around 70 degrees so it isn’t under any extreme temperatures. It is literally a conundrum. I don’t find any logical reason for the plant to be doing this. Very frustrating. But thank you for all your tips. Those are usually the best things to check for when any plant have issues :)
Hi Matthew, Plants are stronger than we might think! I hope your ZZ plant will recover from the damage and its broken bulb will heal and produce new roots! Green Luck & Thank you for watching 🌱
Mine was growing beautifully and I thought it needed to be repotted, it didn't react well at all! And still hasn't bounced back. No new growth and its been months! 😢
Hi Tammie, After repotting plants go through some level of shock and it might take time for plants to acclimate, especially if repotted during semi-dormant period. Plants are now in the active growth phase and you might see some new growth soon on your ZZ plant. Make sure to allow the soil to dry out completely before watering and place your plant in a bright light spot. Wishing your plant a fast recovery and hope it will bounce back soon. Thank you for watching 🌱
Hello 911 plz? 3 big zz leaf tips as well as front edges turn yellow going to inside leaf by few milliliters. Not fertilized since summer Not watered for 3 weeks but still slightly moist No other issues Other leaves look fine 3 leaves with pale yellow edges are on different stalks Help me doc?
Hi Bassem, Depending on a season, ZZ plants might show some climate related stress with leaf yellowing. it happens to our ZZ plants more during cold winter time. Thank you for watching 🌱

Hi Juan. It takes about 3-5 years to grow a ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) from a 1-2 stem plant into a fully grown plant. They usually grow 6-8 new stems per year (most during active growth period - Spring-Summer) and spread outwards by about an inch or so in diameter per year. Plants that are getting bright light grow faster! Thank you for watching. Green Cheers! 🌱
I've had mine for 2 years and it has not put out any new growth. I repotted it last spring, following all the tips on many videos but still nothing. I'm an experienced planet owner, all my other plants are doing well and growing large and healthy, but this is puzzling me
Hello Laura, - If you have not yet fertilized your plant - it is time to do it! Feed your plant every year from March till September. We use this plant food mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer and all plants are loving it. If you use any other fertilizer, best to apply half of the recommended dose. - Make sure to allow the soil to dry out completely before watering and place your plant in a bright light spot. - It is best to use the Soil Moisture meter to establish a proper watering frequency. It important to allow the soil to dry out completely and all the way through before watering.
*** Using the soil moisture meter will help you to establish a proper watering frequency.

May your ZZ plant grow happy and healthy!
Hi Wanda,
Thank you for watching 🌱
Yes, you may place your ZZ plant outside during warm seasons.
This plant can handle a few hours of direct sun. Morning sun is gentle and most plants will enjoy it.
Just remember to rotate the plant often if it is exposed to sun rays.

Thank you for your tips! 🌱
Zeazy plant so zeazy to care

Does the black ZZ grow that big too?
Hi Andrea,
Yes, it can. By pruning the plant you will be able to keep it in any desired shape/size.

Hi prof
From my parents zz I took leaves then put them in water
Guide me plz to how to get new plants from them
Hi!
- Trim ZZ plant leaves near the petiole (where the leaf joins the stem)
- Use multiple leaf cuttings instead of a single leaf for better results
- Allow leaf ends to callus over (few hours)
- Place healthy cuttings in a narrow glass with enough water to cover the ends
- Position under bright, indirect light
- Change water weekly or when looks cloudy
- Repot in soil once new roots appear
Green Luck! 🪴
@Mycityplants hi julia
It worked
Qq
Some leaves formed rhizome s while still in water and green leave started to be born upwards from there
However roots are still few mm can i plant into soil as already done with those who formed 3 cm roots?
Hi! I am glad your propagation of ZZ is successful!
Yes, you may place leaves with shorter new roots in the soil but for a better result I recommend to wait a bit longer.
Green Cheers!
What can I use to raise the plant in tall pots, without buying new pots?
Hi Gina,
Plant stand, stool or side table will do work as long as it can handle the weight of your plant.
Thank you for watching 🌱🌱🌱
Is it poisonous or not? I'm confused. Different sources say different things.
Hi!
ZZ plant is poisonous when ingested.

Hello Florecita,
Usually yellowing of leaves and stems is due to watering issue. Can also be the result of fertilizing issue (too much).
- Soil porosity + drainage are important!!!
- Water the plant ONLY when the soil is completely dry, all the way through.
- When watering, make sure to use enough water so it can reach lower roots.
*** Get the soil moisture meter: mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-plant-tools/products/soil-moisture-meter
Test the soil once every 7-10 days.
Wait for the meter reading to go down to zone 1 + add 7-10 more days before watering.
- Do not allow the plant to sit in water after watering.
- Do not fertilize until Spring. Feed every time you water from March-September.
*** best to use half of the recommended amount of fertilizer (unless you are using this plant food: mycityplants.com/collections/fertilizers/products/all-purpose-fertilizer)
May your plant grow happy and healthy!
I love my plant so much . I was transporting it and tried to break apart a bulb, and it snapped like a potatoe hopefully I didn't kill the bulb 😢
Hi Matthew,
Plants are stronger than we might think!
Hi Tammie,
After repotting plants go through some level of shock and it might take time for plants to acclimate, especially if repotted during semi-dormant period.
Plants are now in the active growth phase and you might see some new growth soon on your ZZ plant.
Make sure to allow the soil to dry out completely before watering and place your plant in a bright light spot.
Wishing your plant a fast recovery and hope it will bounce back soon.

Hello 911 plz?
3 big zz leaf tips as well as front edges turn yellow going to inside leaf by few milliliters.
Not fertilized since summer
Not watered for 3 weeks but still slightly moist
No other issues
Other leaves look fine
3 leaves with pale yellow edges are on different stalks
Help me doc?
Hi Bassem,
Depending on a season, ZZ plants might show some climate related stress with leaf yellowing. it happens to our ZZ plants more during cold winter time.

My zz is growing very good then suddenly new leaf turning yellow ...what to do
Hi Rahul,
Make sure the plant is watered properly (only when the soil is bone dry all the way through), check the roots, examine for any pests....

I wonder how old is the ZZ you have in the large plant to get that Grow..?
I'm an experienced planet owner, all my other plants are doing well and growing large and healthy, but this is puzzling me
Hello Laura,
- If you have not yet fertilized your plant - it is time to do it!
ZZ plant should be watered when the meter reading is in the 1 zone + wait for 7-10 days (small plants) and 2-3 more weeks (large plants).

Hi Belinda,

Dust build up blocks light absorption and creates a perfect environment for pest infestation. So, Keeping your plant clean is very important!
