    It's wonderful that you added the little section at the end with the difference between the sound of chatter and the sound of a smooth cut. Woodturners should always use their ears; you can even hear when a piece is working a little loose, in turn to tighten up the headstock.

      That's why I don't play music over my phone through my hearing aids. I want to hear anything out of the ordinary.

    Thanks for the many tips. I could tell that the angle of cut and size of tool would make turning much easier or at least feel more productive.

    Great tutorial Ed; thanx. I just started turning AA for various car pieces and the video helped point out where I was having issues during the process. On a lighter note; Is it me or does he sound like Donald Sutherland?

    awesome video! If I ever get that far it will help. First time with an acrylic blank today. Drilling it out, ALMOST to the end, the bit and blank fused together. I can NOT get the bit out. Wrote to a few of the pen places I buy from and posted in a few forums, but if you have the answer to this one, please reply here. I tried putting the bit in my hand drill and hitting reverse. It won't even budge.
    Hard lesson. Drill slow, pull out often. Wish I would have known that.

      You will see lots of solutions. Most don't work.
      Put the bit and acrylic piece in the oven, just under 200 degrees. Leave in oven at least 15 minutes, meanwhile find an oven mitt and a vice grip pliers.
      When you take out the piece, grab the blank with the hand in the oven mitt and grab the bit with the vice grip, turn counterclockwise (loosen) direction, the bit should back out with some difficulty, but it will work. If not the first time, warm it more (some resins need to get hotter than others) Watch it does not start on fire!!!!!

      Thanks for the reply, I managed finally to get it out. Saving the blank believe it or not. I was able to turn it, polish it, and it made a beautiful pen. Learned a few things I did wrong so good learning experience.

      Hee, Hee!! OF course I have NEVER done such a thing!!!! BUT, I just happen to have a technique that works!!
      Put the drill and blank in the oven, set about 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep an eye on it, if it starts to melt, take out immediately!! If you stay near 150, it won't melt.
      After about 10 minutes, take it out of the oven, by grabbing the blank with an oven mitt on one hand. Grab the drill bit with a vice grip pliers and back it out of the blank. Do it quickly, if the blank starts to cool, repeat the procedure.

    Thank you Ed, I’m about ready to embark upon turning my first acrylic. thank you for the information as it was very helpful. What speed was the blank turning.?

    • @edfromexoticblanks5639
      @edfromexoticblanks5639  6 років тому

      Speed is a good question!! I turn most everything as fast as the lathe will go. But my answer to you is turn as fast as YOU are COMFORTABLE!!! One of the most important parts of turning is confidence. If you are nervous about how fast the blank is spinning, you will not concentrate on your cuts. So, go as fast as YOU WISH!!
