Sir I want to thank you for taking the time to point out all the timing marks. This job isn't that bad IF one knows what to do. It took me taking my car apart 2 times and FINALLY finding your video to get my car back together. Runs like it's supposed to after watching your video. Thank you very much. Lol subaru dealer wanted 1200$ to do this. Local mechanic wanted 400. Now that I know how, I can do it myself for parts and a couple hours.
I'm a relatively new subaru owner but my subaru isn't new so I'm still learning a lot
Great step-by-step tutorial and very educational Jim on changing out the timing belt, idlers and water pump. Always a great job!
stuzman Thank you terry
Hello again Jim. I must admit I skipped ahead in a few places. I don't own a Subaru and other channels have done this as well, but I always like hanging out for the commentary and to support your great channel. Keep up the good work, I find value in every video.
Thank you Wyatt.I hope all is well
My husband and I have spent 3 weekends using these 2 videos as a guide, info is great except for the timing marks. Here’s what we have learned:
When replacing the water pump, it probably won’t come with a good gasket or a seal. These are probably special order parts, so check the box and order them when you get the pump.
The timing belt kit is probably just the pulleys, get a belt too.
The timing marks on our 2002 Outback were lines on the rim of the cams, not the arrows he shows in the video. The center crank sprocket arrow points at almost 3 o’clock, the cam arrows point to about 2 o’clock. You should be able to see lines pointing to (or near) the top-dead-center marks on the engine with the arrows in these positions.
Can you tell me please how hard it was to remove the crank shaft bolt at 12:45 ? He goes and gets his air gun, that scares me a little bit. Also if you remember the socket size? Thank you so much.
First, the best thing you can do is a web search for your year and model plus "FSM" so for our 02 Outback I searched "2002 Subaru Outback FSM" and found a site within the top five results to download the Factory Service Manual for our car for free. We printed out all the stuff about the timing belt and water pump and posted it on the garage wall while we were working on it. it was invaluable reference.
Second, you can get a tool on amazon for about $60 that makes the crank shaft bolt easy to remove. Search "Subaru Crank Pulley tool" we got one that was just a piece of steel cut in a ring with a long handle and tapped for large bolts. Thread the bolts in and they slide into the holes in the Crank Pulley, then you just use opposing pressure on your breaker bar to loosen the bolt. Also, our bolt is a 22mm.
Thank you!
i haven't even finished the video but this guy is cool
Great video, zip ties are really useful.
As always a great and very educational video. Thanks for sharing. Jim I hope you have a blessed new year my friend. You are always in my prayers.
Thank you for stopping by and for your input.
Awesome video mr. Jim

Outstanding job
Thank you for watching . I'm happy to help. Don't forget to subscribe.
A cliffhanger!!
Stay tuned for part 2 Lol
Nice video Jim!
Thank you for stopping by the shop
This is well done!!!
Exactly Excellent
Thank you for stopping by the shop.
Your explanation about Timing marks alignment 16:12 - 16:30 is wrong, the L&R cam sprockets have notches, you do not use the arrow. The arrow on the LH sprocket is used when checking/adjusting intake/exhaust valves clearance!!
Are you sure about that, the other people who have videos on this day the same?
@@eyesopen444 yes i am sure, it is clearly indicated in the service manual.
@@bonifacemuriuki3229 oh ya sorry I ment to rewrite that comment after watching this video I then saw many other videos showing it correctly, thanks for putting your comment up there I hope no one did it wrong 👍
Oh good thing you'd mention it I was watching I'm nope not the arrow. Good guy like your videos.
How does it not cause any damage when he fires it up and the car sounds normal?
Hi Jim, Do you ever cut the belt off, rather than taking one of the idlers off first? I always worry about binding the aluminum threads in the block if a pulley is removed with the tensioner engaged. Cutting the belt eliminate the risk of damaging the thread during removal.
great video! I think I also have a bad water pump. do you remember if this car was spraying coolant out alot in the area of the thermostat? that's what mine is doing sometimes it's only a drip. thanks!
That's a tell-tale sign. A lot of times these water pumps don't fail immediately- rather they slowly fail. Keep an eye on your temperature gauge. If it starts going up when you're idling, that's another sign.
Very well done. Thank You!
Thank you for stopping by the shop.
Great cam place, ent great vid thanks
B. Bond Appreciate the feedback, thanks for watching.
Awesome video Dr. Jim. When are u making video on Toyota or Lexus timing belt.
As soon as one comes to the shop I will
Good job!
I'm happy to help
What's the cost to have this service done?
The only reason I disliked the video is because I'm using it as a diagnostic video on my car and I dont have the time for this repair so all I see is dollar signs flying faster than I can make them lol... great video though 5 stars honestly
So if i change the water pump the belt has to get change to?
What to do now? I have the exact car as the video and used this as a guide, now everything is ready for the new belt to go on and I find out that the arrows are supposedly not the correct timing marks to align before removing old belt. How do i fix this now that the belt is off before I cause any further damage?
16:00 Timing marks alignment explanation.
The hero we need....
Thank you for stopping by the shop and you input
jimthecarguy no thank you! this video is fantastic.
What do they charge for labor on this
How much is the cost for whater pump
Nice job.... i have a 2003 subaru outback the harmonic balancer went out on it so i changed it and put it back together but when i start it the engine sounds fine when running but after shut it off the harmonic balancer turns left to right 2 to 3 times what would cause that i checked the timing and it is correct thanks.
somebody send jim a astro pneumatic work light astro 30sl and a 40sl so he can make more great vids,i would but im not in the states
Is it the same for an ej15
OK, I'm at work and can't really watch this video right now. But I just lost my timing belt yesterday and was going about 70mph when it broke. It was a rough break and I haven't opened anything up yet. I was about to order the timing kits and other stuff, but I keep hearing that this is an interference motor. If it is then I know my valves are dead as well. Can u please shed some light on this...
I do a live stream tonight at 7:00 PM (EST) I will talk about your problem then.I hope you can stop by .If you do make sure to message me in the chat.
jimthecarguy great... I haven't had the time to even work on the car, and am skeptical of putting money on it... But I will b there... 👍
How do you remember which bolt or nut goes where? After you remove them.
After doing some many of these jobs you just remember were you take them out.I may not remember what my wife just told me but were I took the bolts from i remember.Lol
jimthecarguy I was going to ask the same thing. I took 8 bolts off the intake of my truck to clean out the egr ports... and even those 8 bolts I couldn't remember which ones went where. Eric posted a video where he replaced a caravan engine... and somehow he knew where every bolt went. at least it appeared he did
Oh yes so it Appeared.Lol
How do I check if the belt should be replaced? Any symptoms? I drive a 2.5i NA SOHC 2009 Impreza
Check you recommended service time.
Do not wait until it starts to look bad or worn
Jim where did you get the plugs for the trans cooler nipples on the radiator?
I baught a set from my local tool truck.I think it was Snap on or Matco. They work great. It save a mess.
why did u remove the radiotor???
More room to move and access things some remove just the fans some remove the whole radiator but it definitely helps
What size socket for the crankshaft?
22mm
Oh man I'm not likin the way this is going LOL looks like I would be ok till this point. Then the wheels fall off . Haha
Oh no thats in part 2.Hahaha
JIM email you in your Gmail account check it get back to me thanks JIM.
