God beginners guide,Chris. As you know, there's usually some decent bass behind the mackerel shoals, and you can often bag one if you use a Dextor wedge instead of a lead. It would only put a couple of quid on the set up, and doubles your chances.
I am located on The Southern Outerbanks of North Carolina USA The Mackeral we catch and eat are much larger Spanish (spotted) or King Mackeral (stripped) Spanish are harvested over 12” normally in 3-6 pound size. Our king Mackeral are massive over 15” 6lb and over some 40-60 pounds. So I use much larger hardware n baits but often times a spoon gold in color seems to work best. But I was taught to fish with hand lines trolling behind lil skiffs. Quite efficient way to harvest them. Yesterday I caught several really nice size ones. Nice lil video I enjoyed it quite much. Thank You! I will start posting some vids on my channel soon crabbing fishing digging clams! Have a blessed day Sir!!
Thanks, our mackeral are just small biggest about 4lb. Pity we dont get Spanish mackeral here, we are just starting to see Bonito. Thanks for watching, if you send me your youtube url i will sub. Please feel free to share my channel. Tight lines mate.
10 mackerel should be enough for anyone to take home and share , I’ve seen people take over 100 and brag about it , catch and release after you caught your intended quota seems a waste of time and potentially harmful to the fish , it’s not like fishing for an elusive trout or salmon as mackerel will go for anything even just a silver hook .
I usually go for mid 30s - there’s 6 of us, two apiece for a meal, so that’s 3 meals for us. Given its an hour and a half to the sea, and i only get to go maybe two or three times in a summer i don’t feel that’s unreasonable. I do usually get a few more towards the end of the season so i have some bait to freeze for wrecking over winter.
Shock leader is a length of line tied to your main line that is stronger than your main line. It is about 3 of 4 wraps around the reel. Then the length of the rod and connects to your feathers. It is generally 10lbs B's for each ounce you are casting. It stops the line snapping as you cast, for safety reasons, stops you sending a weight off sideways down the beach.
Rig line (main body length) should be rated to 50-60lbs breaking strain, this should be continued with a strong initial main line to cope with the power of casting out reducing risk of line break in the cast. Allow for the drop to rig along the length of rod and a few turns around the reel . 15ft or a bit more (depends on drop lenght) this should keep you safe for the cast happy fishing dude
@@MattHadlow-wood im new to fishing, im doing my research before i commit to buying equipment. I do have a tackle shop but staff there dont really know much. thanks for help.
Best days out catching a few mackerel then home I try smoking mine take your kids along when mackerel fishing they will be hooked for life absolutely a perfect day out & fresh fish for dinner what's not to like 😊
I went fishing once down at my local harbor on my own, got there about 16:30. Place was packed, about 30 people fishing/watching in about 40 foot of space. Anyway, I quickly clipped my feathers on and cast out in the little space I had. My feathers hit the water and I started reeling in, and then I felt a tug. Straight away assumed I had caught someone else's line. But the tugging kept coming, and no one else was reacting, so I realised, it was in fact a bite! I got it near the surface, and eventually I could see 6 white flashes darting below the surface. I reeled them up the wall and got them off the hooks. I kept a couple, and threw the other 4 back. I then looked around to see everyone staring at me... I quickly cast again, and to my surprise, it lands in the identical place. As soon as it hits the water, they were tugging on it again! I must have hit them, or dropped it right in front of them! I reeled it in, and another 6 mackerel! I was throwing them all back at this point, as I had no use for them, and I don't want them to die unnecessarily. Some people asked for some, but I only gave away a couple. I am not exaggerating when I say this process continued for another 6/7 casts. Normally I would go fishing for 3/4 hours, but because I caught so many fish, so quickly, I was satisfied after an hour, and they had stopped biting by then anyway. In that one hour I caught approximately 45 mackerel, and no one else there caught any fish in that time. The only things I can contribute to my success were, well luck, and perhaps, the specific feathers I was using.
60 years ago the mackerel were huge! Just goes to show how much our sea's are over fished! We take, yet put no stock back into the sea like what is practice in river fishing!
I agree about over fishing, also species like Tuna moving into our waters and a blooming population of seals, sea conservation zones and fish nursery's are doing some of what you say.
Hi Chris, as a complete novice taking up sea, shore fishing really enjoy ur videos very informative. I totally get the need for a shock leader, what was the knot the gentlemen tied ? I couldn't quite see .. is there a link ? Cheers
Enjoyed watching this video, and what a good video it is, takes you all the way from getting the equipment to preparing and enjoying a great mackerel breakfast. - You've made me feel hungry now! That's a nice looking beach you're fishing from there. Is it in the same town as Tony's Tackle Shop? First time watching one of your videos, but have subscribed and going to watch more. Well made and you present very well. Regards David.
Thank you for subscribing, and thank you for your very kind comments. The beach i was fishing from was Seaford, but when the Mackeral are in you can catch them from Eastbourne, ( near Tonys shop) too. ✌️ & ❤️
@seafishingwithcj how much weight would you put on this beach with a good 8oz rod? It was very disappointing that you missed the opportunity to elaborate on how to choose weight.
Great video CJ nice one 🌟 Thanks for sharing 🎣💖 Can I ask is it important to gut and clean them as soon as possible on the beach or can you wait a little while? Thanks hunni 👍
Id bag that deal for £50. looks good. Maybe i need to hunt down a fishing shop close to me. SO clueless id get suckered into spending much more knowing my luck lol
I think the rod was about 12ft, it wasn't rated at any great weight, it's a very cheap bargain bundle. The point being that for £50 you could get fishing .
Couldn’t make out in the video if Tony was tying a granny knot in the leader or the mainline. I’m sorry but I have to agree, this video is not really a “beginners guide to” but more of a “fishing on a budget” Please don’t get me wrong CJ, I love your videos and learn from them all the time but I struggled with this one. Sorry!
Yeah, sadly, it's not a beginner's guide as it uses unexplained, undefined jargon and things like the knotting process is shot from far away (with poor contrast) whilst lots of definite articles are used to describe the process: 'this' is 20lb, 'that' is 10lb and the newbie is left guessing what 'this' and 'that' are. Shame after the kindly effort of filming, editing and posting. I've given up watching as it's use. I liked your intro, warning against getting greedy/frenzied though.
7:20 Well I'm not sure what video you watched, but off at the other side of the tackle shop is a blurry knotting process in this 'beginners video' with the demonstrator using jargon and you, acting on behalf of the viewing beginner, going "yeah, yeah, yeah... I know all that". I suggest instead that YOU rewatch this from the perspective of a beginner and realise that you've misnamed the video. Could've been good. Isn't what it claims.
Sorry had to stop this before 10 minutes as it was telling me and showing me absolutely nothing. Great if you know fishing jargon and numbers but I don’t. Also trying to show me how to do knots with a transparent fishing line? Come on get real. Great effort guys and no doubt it will be if benefit to those inexperienced folk who need a little more knowledge but for absolute beginners like me, it’s not helping at all. What I need is a true fishing guide for beginners:
It was designed, more as a guide to beginners on what they could do for £50. There are plenty more videos out there on how to do it, now you know what to look for.

i still have no idea what a shock leader is or how it works. couldnt really follow what he was actually doing.

1) What size was the weight?

I was using a 1oz weight. It's all that cheap rod could handle really.
@seafishingwithcj how much weight would you put on this beach with a good 8oz rod? It was very disappointing that you missed the opportunity to elaborate on how to choose weight.
fresher than fresh ,caught from the beach by yourself..you cant beat it
Tasted 👌
What time is best to go fishing ,low tide or high tide and what size is the lead? nice vid thanks .
That rod was casting a 1oz weight. You can catch them at any stage of the tide, but top of the tide is most consistent I think.
we use the Macerel for live bait to catch big kingfish here in New zealand
And here for bass
Great video CJ nice one 🌟
Thanks for sharing 🎣💖
Can I ask is it important to gut and clean them as soon as possible on the beach or can you wait a little while?

The longer you leave the guts in, the more they deteriorate. I didnt gut the ones in the video, but i was home within an hour of catching them.

Seaford East Sussex.

I have caught mackerel off the beach in March, but that was a complete fluke. They start to show June through to late October.

Search on UA-cam, there are plenty of videos ua-cam.com/video/YLADRTVO9Tc/v-deo.htmlsi=jrJxJy21HjicXSY-
Mate, you should have hooked a few of those bate fish that were washed on shore!!
That probably wouldnt help,
Is that deal still available at Tony’s? What the brand of that budget rod you are using, mate?
Thanks.
I believe so , ring the shop and ask. The rod is a Fishzone mackerel and bass...
What rod and reel?
I could be any £50 budget set up. Most good tackle shops do them they won't last you years, but they will catch you dinner.
Run the line through your fingers and it will take all the Memory ( coils ) out of the line.
👍
That works for a while, but eventually you have to de twist the line.
jk;,thank you nVERY MUCH

location ?
