I remember at the time, when he said "Whatever being in love means", my jaw dropped - and NOBODY commented or seemed to notice that !?!?!?
I do remember reading a random comment about it. It's just that words didn't have digital resonancy back then. Everything flew under the radar, unless you were a fringe gatherer of analog information--a geek like me.
There was a lot of talk about it at the time but I think most people put it down to Charles being geeky and awkward (which he often seemed to be at that time).
She should have said thanks, no thanks right then and there.
He was raised primarily by governesses and by boarding schools. His parents never gave him love and affection. His father was harsh and cruel, his mother distant and duty bound. So how can he be expected to know what love is?

I know most mention the part of "whatever in love means". But I am shocked by how he says "he thought she was an attractive 16 year old"...how anyone thought this whole marriage was the right thing is beyond me....
It was never ok to be attracted to a 16 year old but back then it was considered normal even though we know today that it’s wrong. It’s important to consider the time period when talking about things like this

In Diana’s book she mentioned that he was dating her older sister Sarah at the time, and how she kept Charles to herself for the entirety of the time so Diana was mostly ignored. I’m guessing Charles simply said that bit during the interview for the sake of their “love story.”

In their engagement interview she said she will be fine because Charles will be on her side... He never expressed real affection towards her during this interview, besides saying he will be "missing her" in order to draw attention away from her statement to miss the children she looked after. All he expressed were well calculated steps how to get a women to marry him and share his burden...
He WAS trying to soften it for his “mistress” aka the love of his life. There’s a lot of people who are responsible for this “miss match” Their stubborn and pomp attitude ruined a young girls life, just because Camilla was deemed “unsuitable “ once these self important people realise that everyone in the world has “free will” to marry who they wish too, and if it’s a mistake, then, it’s their fault and NOT the family who got too involved in their children’s lives. This was never a happy union. But now Queen Camilla, and King Charles are where they belonged together and in love.

Dr Runcie the Archbishop who married them said much later he felt it was an arranged marriage.
They met when she was 16. 16yo's don't know anything. She had 1 CSE, in cookery.
I bet Charles (and Mrs P-B) thought Diana would just be a pliant docile wife who'd put up and shut up, but she wasn't. She died fighting.

The night before the wedding in July 1981 Diana found a gift that Charles was about to send to Camilla. Charles and his consort staff spent a long time convincing her not to call off the wedding.
Why is he depressed? He's the one who pursued and proposed.

Diana was quick to laugh to try to make light of it, she knew as much as Charles did that it wasn't right. They went ahead with it out of duty but jeez, 19 is really young to be going through all that.
Nobody at the time - press or public - dissected this interview - or that particularly casual comment from Charles - at all. Everybody loved it, loved the couple and looked forward to their wedding and life together. It was not considered a mismatch or awkward in any way.
"Whatever in love means". That completely flew under the radar back then. It is apparent no one dared question it. A response that someone that never experienced love may have given. What a complete sham of a marriage. What a wasted opportunity at love. What a cold cold family.
They should never have got married.
Or - a man who knows he is to be King putting his duty to the country before his own wishes and desires.

She was so young and innocent. That marriage was definitely a bad decision.
I was 14 years old back in 1981 when I watched this and I was shocked by what he said, and I don't remember anybody commenting on it at all.
The way he was stroking her fingers when the interviewer was talking about him leaving for 5-6 weeks…it seemed like a sweet gesture but then saying whatever in love means was sad. He knew it was duty bound but everyone else wanted the fairy tale.

I think the only mistake was the paparazzi rushing through her car. I am fairly sure she would have found that love of her life and lived a life where she wouldn't care anymore about Charles and Camilla, and who knows? Maybe she would attend his coronation with Camilla because she had a big heart and couldn't hold resentment. I blame the paparazzi a lot

When you see the video from the beginning I can understand that they were a little nervous to express their feelings and emotions on television. I’m used to seeing the end part of the interview, but looking at it from the beginning gives you a different perspective of the situation.

Sadly he had a mistress for the entire time he was married to this young lady. She deserved better, If he were a man he would never have inflicted such pain on her intentionally - yet he did says a lot about him - alas none of it good! Now his mistress is the Queen not as the late queen wanted i.e. queen consort. Again he could not even respect his mothers wishes.
I absolutely loved Princess Diana's Blue outfit with the side bow. I bought material and got a tailor to copy as best as she could and when I wore it, I had gasps of admiration 😂 Sadly the outfit did not last too long as I had put on weight and could not get into it anymore
I was only 11 when this happened. Us girls went out and got our hair cut like hers. Her haircut was really popular in America.

Something my ex boyfriend would have said. He stung me along for 5 years and even had me move to a different country with him and then told me he lied about saying he would marry me for a visa, he just said that to make me happy and keep me around. I don’t blame him he was a good man and I know he regrets us separating immensely. Now I’m with someone who calls me his wife everyday and talks about growing old together out of habit despite the fact we are only just planning our wedding. I’m so lucky because he is an angel and man I always dreamed of but it took some real heartbreak to get there. Sometimes it’s a great person but the wrong time in your life. I think Charles was a weak person and Camilla dominated his heart. Diana was unfortunately collateral. I am so glad the world is captivated and remembers her for being headstrong and honest about her struggles of her mind and her heart. ❤️

I noticed that as well. The actress who played Diana was moving her head about and so her eyes were rolling around to keep eye contact with the reporters. Diana was much steadier during this interview.

Charles looks very affectionate toward Diana. He is happy, looks at her a lot and rubs her fingers.
