  • Meet Martha Peterson, the first-ever female CIA spy in Moscow. After her husband was killed in Vietnam as a CIA paramilitary officer, she decided to apply herself. After being accepted into the agency in 1973, she was taught Russian in preparation for her assignment to Moscow. From 1975 to 1977, she spied on the Soviets and served as a handler for Aleksandr Ogorodnik (code-named TRIGON). It wasn’t until June 1977 that TRIGON was captured by the KGB and committed suicide during interrogation. Weeks later, the KGB kidnapped and interrogated Peterson, who was shortly expelled from the USSR afterward. She would continue to work for the CIA until her retirement in 2003. Thank you for your service, Martha!
