I had a deep happy memories with Nikons kit telephoto lens. I used to be like you taking pictures everywhere. After my kid was born, my photography basically arround the kid; the most wild animal in the world! Kids like to run toward you, and nikons af-s mode with these fast cheap zoom really helps to freeze these crazy moment. Kids are always close and big enough, this is just like the Canon famous portrait lens 100-400 for our bridal photo. It gives me who with some experience and my wife who has no photography experience to record our daughter grew up. Very happy with the focus and range, especially in the sports days, all the emotion, facial expression were all captured sharply.
Hi I have just subscribed, I have had this lens for over a year now. I have been blown away by IQ even when wide open. I have used on the following cameras, D750, D7200 and V2. Sometimes I have had to override the AF and grab the focus ring when shooting small objects (birds) with a busy background. It is so much better than the old 70-300 VR (FX/dx) lens which started falling short at 135mm. I would agree that AF speed is more than adequate for most applications and if the light is good I use this to a 70-200 F2.8 and teleconverter.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, Jon! Yep it seems that with this lens out there's no need to bother with the old 70-300 VR. Now I just have to try the 70-300 AF-P FX version, although aside form build quality I doubt it's going to be a night and day difference
I have to agree. I got this lens without the vr version. It is a very sharp. the only one fault that I have with this lens, is that you can't use it with you older nikon cameras. I think for the money its great. Cheers.
03:44 its not true because bokeh does not only depend from aperture but from focal length as well (and distance between subject/background). So this lens even at f8 and 200mm for instance (300mm for crop sensor) will give you a nice blurry background if there is some distance between your subject and the background.
Yep exactly, I point this out at 03:25 - very easy to get a blurry background at these longer focal lengths. As you say, subject:bg distance is critical too.
Yep!! This is a great telephoto lens that gives great images for a small price. It should also be noted that it is easy to carry around for ling stretches of time. Small filter diameter means cheaper filters like Cir-P etc. also pretty fast focus too. If you look after the lens and treat it well it should last for years and years. Cheers
Well put, Brian! Nikon hit this one out of the park, I dare say it was even underpriced considering the quality and performance. Refurbished/used it's an absolute steal
Once again another great, informative, and superb lens video! The 70-300mm is easily one of the most versatile yet affordable telephoto Nikon lenses ever! I see this becoming a really useful lens for those who want to start doing nature, wildlife and long range shooting outdoors without breaking the bank. Suprisingly portraiture seems possible even if the aperture reaches 6.3 as long as you pretty much enough light! UA-cam literally deleted my comments on your channel after I resetted my youtube😂😂 but as always, I really appreciate your lens and camera videos...I always watch them!
Thanks again :) I think this lens might be the best value for money of any current production Nikon lens, especially on the used market. And f/6.3 is no problem for portraits with some careful background selection!
Great value for the price! I use it for bird photography (as a hobby) paired with Nikon D3500, and was able to take many decent, if not great shots. Great video.
I use the FX-version on my D7200, because of the 105-450mm and Sport VR, plus all weather durability. But the DX-version is not bad at all. Tried it before I bought the FX (second hand).
Being that this is a DX lens, wouldn't the focal range be 70-300? I believe a 70-300 FX lens (Full frame, not crop) would would be 105-450 on a crop sensor camera
Yep, a 70-300mm lens remains a 70-300mm lens regardless of where you mount it. If it's a DX lens it won't cover the full FX sensor so we have to crop in to reduce the massive vignetting in the image. If it's an FX lens and we put it on a DX camera, the angle of view is similar to a 105-450mm lens (so the same as cropping into a 70-300mm lens)
The lens comes in seven different versions: AF f/4-5.6G AF f/4-5.6D AF f/4-5.6D ED AF-S f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-P f/4.5-6.3G IF-ED DX AF-P f/4.5-6.3G IF-ED DX VR AF-P f/4.5-5.6E IF-ED VR
Great Video 📹 thanks a lot . Question 🙋🏻♂️ I'm a Birdwatcher and I have an old NIKON D5,000.. Do you recommend this model for my Old camera 📸. Or which model do you recommend with this range of characteristics... Thanks. 😇 ✌🏼
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately your camera isn't compatible with these new AF-P lenses. I would consider a used Nikon 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 G ED VR lens that should get you there for around $160
Sorry but another question... I have a D3400 and looking to buy this. I don't have an option on my menus to switch on VR? Is this also a firmware update or something? I have looked but can't find the answer, also emailed nikon but no answer yet. Thanks
Yes but I would ask photographers who have been to those parks: what focal range did you find most useful? I'd want to rent a Nikon 200-500mm lens or Tamron 150-600mm if I was going to Masai Mara. 30-700mm on APS-C gives you 105-450mm equivalent, the question is: is that 450mm enough?
Unfortunately not, here's the full compatibility chart: www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000045777&configured=1&lang=en_GB&setRedirect=true
hmm yea just a bit of swirl primarily on the corners, definitively unintended - and nothing compared to some old school manual lenses (e.g. helios 44-2)
Have not tried this one, should be optically identical - only difference being the VR mechanism. Given the small price difference, I'd go for the VR every time
I bought mine refurbished for $150 B&H photo I see they have a used for for $150 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/used/1275036/nikon_20062_afp_dx_nikkor_70_300mm.html Outside of north america, eBay or online classifieds
Unfortunately no, check out this compatibility chart for AF-P lenses www.nikonusa.com/images/learn-explore/photography-techniques/2011/which-nikkor-is-right-for-you/media/nikkor-lens-compatibility-chart.pdf
Got mine for $150 refurbished by Nikon (basically new), lots were available but now I don't see any more discounts or many on the used market probably because Nikon stopped selling so many "2 lens" kits with the basic DSLRs. 400 euros... I'd also consider a used FX version of this lens (AF-P 70-300mm) for that kind of money
This is a brilliant lens for birding. It is glued to my D7200.
Great combo!

Thanks for sharing, Aldus! Yes kids are the ultimate test of photographic skill :) Good rate of continuous shooting on-camera helps too

@@lensvana I am shooting aircraft, so the Sport VR gives me just what I need.

The newer z-Mount Cameras crop into dx Mode, so yes, youre right.

AF f/4-5.6G
AF f/4-5.6D
AF f/4-5.6D ED
AF-S f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED
AF-P f/4.5-6.3G IF-ED DX
AF-P f/4.5-6.3G IF-ED DX VR
AF-P f/4.5-5.6E IF-ED VR
Yep, it can get confusing. At this point I would only consider the last 2. The 4th one should be labeled VR too.
I'll buy it next week for my Nikon D5300,..
hello, does it work well? i have Nikon d5300 too...

cool info thanks what about the NON VR version is the price around $150
Prices have been all over the place recently, but I wouldn't bother with the Non VR version - VR really helps here for not much more $
Can this len good to click wildlife in national parks like Corbett or Masai Mara??

I used to use 300mm f4 for birds, need to crop quite a bit, even the focus is sharp. It is great for puppy running in the field.
Yes it is, I went to masai Mara with 18-140mm & I got many good images, most of animals are usually close to game drive cars.
Do you know if it is compatible with the Nikon D90?
Unfortunately not, here's the full compatibility chart: www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000045777&configured=1&lang=en_GB&setRedirect=true
8:48 swirly bokeh?

I have Nikon 18- 140 mm VR DX lense. Whether it will be worthy to exchange it for purchass of 18- 300 Nikon VR lense.?
No way, I would keep the 18-140mm it's a great lens
Can i use this lens for little portrait too?
Absolutely, I've used it for portraits!
What about the Nikon AF-P 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 DX Lens? No VR.
Have not tried this one, should be optically identical - only difference being the VR mechanism. Given the small price difference, I'd go for the VR every time
I have the non VR version, not optimal. You definitely should get the VR lens. It’s on sale on Amazon now.
Is this lens compatible with an older Nikon D40 SLR?
Nope, for the D40 you need an AF-S lens (AF-P lenses not compatible)
Where can I buy it for $150?
I bought mine refurbished for $150 B&H photo
I see they have a used for for $150 www.bhphotovideo.com/c/used/1275036/nikon_20062_afp_dx_nikkor_70_300mm.html

Can i use it to D7000 body ?
Unfortunately not (D7000 is not compatible with AF-P lenses)
Saying "it's not a duck, it's a mallard" is like saying "it's not a vehicle, it's a car."
Mallards are a species of duck. /facepalm.
