To clarify, when I said the 70-200mm was sharper than the 80-400mm, I should have added “at larger apertures”. They are so close at smaller apertures, but the 70-200mm is just that tiny bit better. Still, both lenses are very good and have always performed well on my D850 and D750 cameras for both landscape and birds and wildlife 🙏📸
Thanks for this video, helped me with my decision. Ended up going with a near mint used 80-400 for $900 CAD vs a 200-500 for $1,300. I went back and forth but the versatility of the 80-400 is what sold me.
Great review and comparison between these two lenses - hard one to choose. Many thanks for sharing the info Adrian - have a great weekend.
Thanks for watching Shaun. Have a great weekend mate, cheers 🙏
Hi Adrian, an interesting video, buddy! These super zooms are getting more and more interesting over the past years, I have to say. Really amazing how the quality increased. Especially for traveling a great choice 🙂
Thank you for the video and enjoy your weekend,
Christian
Thanks for watching Christian. True about the quality increasing. Have a great weekend buddy cheers 🙏
The constant f2.8 can't be denied.
Love my 70-200mm
Excellent comparison vid. I appreciate the content for us DSLR users, in this age of mirrorless!
Thanks for watching!
My pick would be the 70-200. Add the 1.4x and 2.0xTC's and you'd be covered for everything!
Thanks for watching
Interesting comparison, Adrian! I would never have considered the 80-400 b ut your use of it has me thinking about it. :)
Thanks for watching Phil. Cheers buddy 🙏
Hi Adrian, thanks for another wonderful comparison as always with practical instances. Years back I was shooting wildlife with a relatively slow 150-500, which was not really helping me out. I still don’t know, why did I buy that lens. So, on that safari I had to borrow a Sigma 70-200 2.8 to shoot rest of the time - shots are still there in my instagram. Years later I could manage at last to get myself a new 70-200 2.8 mm Sport from Sigma, which produces very sharp images with lovely bouquet. I could not afford a Nikkor in the same category, still cannot😊. It was the heaviest piece in my camera bag, which now has a little competition with the brand new 850. Waiting for your replies to my queries in one of your last posts. Thanks & cheers!
Super interesting comparison! Such beautiful travel shots. Both awesome lenses. With a leaning to travel, I think I'd pick the 80-400 for the versatility. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers for watching 🙏📸
Both lenses are awesome. But yes, definitely the 70-200mm for portraits, weddings like you said. I'd have that 80-400mm for traveling for it's versatility. Thx for the vid
Totally agree! Thanks for watching. Have a great weekend 🙏
Thanks for the video, I also have a d850. How about fast focusing? Is 80-400 good for sports?
It's ok for sports. I use it mainly for birds and wildlife though.
Adrian, this was an interesting comparison. At first, I thought “what?!?!”, you were comparing apples to oranges yet as the video went on, I was really surprised when you pointed out all the similarities between the lenses. I priced the lenses here in the US through a reputable preowned dealer and the 70-200 f/2.8 G II ED VR Autofocus IF Lens is running around $1000 in excellent condition and the 80-400 also in excellent condition is running around $890. So, as you stated even in price, they are similar. Again, I appreciate what you, thank you.
Thanks for watching my friend. Yes, I do get a lot of people ask which of these lenses they should buy, so I made this video. Both are very good in their own way. That's why I own both. I still have so much fun with my DSLR's and love the pic quality out of them. Enjoy your weekend cheers 🙏📸
Can't go wrong with either. Still have the 80-400mm. 70-200mm has been upgraded to the Z version. One of the best S line lenses. Cheers!
I hesitated for a long time before getting this 70-200 F/2.8 because it was a lot of money for me even second-hand and I can say now that it is my favorite lens. He is amazing I want to take photos with him all the time. I added a Nikon TC20E III focal length extender, we lose a little in quality but it's still not bad at all for getting closer to the subject. I would still like to have this 80-400 in hand to see... But I think I would probably take the 200-500 F/5.6. Greetings from the south of France
Hi Adrian I think both look like they are great lenses can’t go wrong with either one of them. I read in the comments how about if you use a converter ring of 1.5 to 2 with the 80-200 what would be the result. Hope you have a great week ahead my friend. Cheers 📸👏🙏🏼
Thanks for watching my friend enjoy your day ahead 🙏
i have a 70-200 vr and love it so much, ant buy FL ED Version but the price is quite high, so stay je ED VR version and it's very nice and sharp lens
Love the 70/200 fine lens..
Certainly is one of my favs
I like the versatility of my 28-300 3.5-5.6 on my D850 good all rounder.
Both are great lenses, but $3500 new, for the 80-400 is a bit steep. Would look for a used one.
Thanks for watching and good call on looking for a good used 80-400mm 🤙🙏
