I bought the 70-300mm nikkor lens 15 years ago and it is still the sharpest lens in my collection. Mine is not light weight and is quite heavy for its compact size. They are on the market for $800 CAN and still in demand which means they are not going anywhere. I used it on my D80 and now on my z50 and will be using it on my z6ii when it arrives. One lens that is staying for good.
Thank you for an excellent presentation. You've convinced me that this lens would be a meaningful upgrade to replace my current telephoto zoom (Nikon 80-200mm f/4.5-5.6 D )
This 70-300 and the 200-500 are both easily in the top 5 absolute best zoom lenses you can get for the money, across all brands. Tremendous values. The 200-500 is currently $1060 (US$) during holiday promo sales. Great review here.

Hi, My first visit to your site today (enjoyed it a lot, not least the Voigtlander 58 review - I love that lens!). I had the AF-S 70-300G and then after trying the Tamron 70-300 VC (which had problems with flare, otherwise excellent), I ended up with the Sigma 100-400 C, which is pretty outstanding, in my book, but now needs servicing after many years of use (I did fine-tune the focusing using the Sigma dock!), but I do have the AF-P 70-300 DX as well, when I need to travel light! Love your art, and not least the photos! I'll be back!
Thank you for this informative video! I just bought the Sigma but am returning it and getting the Nikon 70-300 instead, and your video confirmed I've made the right choice.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and comments....I have the AF-S model for my D500 but I purchased s/h & it has fungus on front glass so rather than getting it repaired maybe I should get the newer AF- P version... cheers 😀
Definitely buy the AF-P lens for the D500. I have the strong impression that this lens is becoming increasingly difficult to find, maybe this video has something to do with it 😀.
thank you for the effort and the sharing. i use this lens on my D750 and have been very impressed. perhaps an outdoor portrait should be my next test especially if i can get the background at least 10 feet/3 meters from my subject for a wee bit of separation. thumbs up.
Thanks a lot Sir. I really thankful to you for describing in details. At last I found a perfect discussion on Nikon AF-P 70-300mm. I have taken my decision to choose my lenses. Love you Sir.
2:09 "D800 with a cropped sensor???" Maybe, you're thinking of a D80? Or do you use your D800 with the DX crop factor applied in the camera settings? The D800 is for sure a full frame body.

First of all, thank you for this helpful video. I just started taking photos amateurishly, and bought Nikon D5100 machine. I wonder if this lens compatible with this machine or not. Will the D5100 machine work fine with this lens. Thank you.
Hey thanks for the great review. I’m a painter too, just looking for a medium lens to get reference shots. Great paintings BTW I hope your doing well Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you Frank, For art reproduction it is best to work with a macro lens because it gives the least distortion, is very sharp and gives accurate colors. I myself work with the Irix 150mm which is a manual focus lens. But other good lenses are Sigma 105mm macro, Tamron 90mm, Nikon 60mm macro, Nikon 55mm macro. Cheers, Wim
Hi! I know it’s a year after this video but I just found your channel! It’s awesome how you do your reviews! I also have a question would this fit a Nikon d3300!?
Thanks for joining the conversation. This lens can be used on a D3300. www.nikonusa.com/images/learn-explore/photography-techniques/2011/which-nikkor-is-right-for-you/media/nikkor-lens-compatibility-chart.pdf
Very informative video sir. I saw your comment on the Greys video and came here. I’ve been thinking of getting the 200-500 f5.6, but I may consider this 70-300 as a replacement for my 70-200 f2.8, which is too heavy for most of what I do these days.
I am using 70-200F4G now, do you think I need to change to 70-300E for 100mm focal segment? I am now going to use one of them with the Z6 to shoot the plane, I already have 24-70F2.8g to take the shot.
Hard to say, if you feel like you're a bit short in length I'd go for it. In terms of sharpness, both lenses are almost the same, the autofocus on the 70-300 mm is surprisingly fast. You do lose a full stop of light at 300mm (f/5.6), but since you photograph airplanes, I suspect you have enough light. The choice is yours, in any case, the 70-300 mm is a beautiful and light lens.
Thank you very much for a very thorough and honest review. It contained all the information I was looking for as I was planning to purchase this lens. I think it will be good choice. It will work with my D7100 and D500 but unfortunately not with my D700.
@@WimBals Hi would just like to know which cameras you used this lens with. Would really like to know if you have experience of using this with a DX body and what the low light performance is considering the minimum aperture will be F8. I want the lens for birding and wildlife and low light performance is important to me. Thanks for your input.
You mentioned in the video the D800 as a crop sensor camera. The D800 is rather a full frame camera and would give you the field of view of 70-300 mm the lens is designed for, not the field of view of 105-450 which you would get on a DX body.
@@eurika391 I used this lens on the D500, D800 and D810. Of course you can test this lens is for your needs by renting it. If money isn't a problem: Nikon 120-300mm f2.8 for lowlight conditions.
Hi Wim, I do have the Sigma AF 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS lens and have been disappointed and have been wondering about the focusing issues with it, like it has a problem or isn't calibrated properly for my Nikon D750. I have been considering to take it to the service repair agent here, as it is still under warranty. Have you heard about others having the same issue with this Sigma lens? And yes the weight
I've sold all of my Sigma lenses and stick with native Nikon glass. If the lens is under warranty you can give it a try to take it to the service center. No more Sigma lenses for me.
Im just getting my first camera and I want to do wildlife photography. Im considering this and the 200 500 5.6 from nikon. Should i get both or just one. If so which one? (getting the d500)
If you want to stick with dx, you can also consider the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR. Very cheap lens with good results if you have enough light. If you still lack reach, you can still consider the 200-500mm. Keep in mind the impact of the increase in weight of the lens if you are out all day.
Sorry the 100-400 C Sigma is the best lens I've used in Canon or Nikon F mount for auto focus accuracy, tracking, and speed. By FAR. There are so many variables when it comes to focus accuracy within the camera or lens settings, that unless you really really know what you are doing, its easy to blame the camera or lens. While the AF-P remains a good lens for Nikon F mount shooters, without doubt, I'd suspect that you re-visit your opinion of the SIgma here.
I have owned both lenses at the same time and was able to keep the variables out of the equation. The Nikon was more accurate in the AF. Nevertheless, the Sigma is a very good lens with of course the extra 100mm
There are variables you cannot control such as sample variation however. I used the Sigma on multiple bodies on two separate mounts, aps-c and full frame, and its focus accuracy was spot on with every single camera - this without any correction having to be made in any of the cameras. It's quite possible, your copy of the Sigma wasn't the best of the samples out there, perhaps an earlier version or there were conflicts with firmware in the cameras- it's really tough to say you had all the variables under control. I think it's worth your time to do a retest with another Sigma. I tested it with 7 different Canon bodies, and 5 different Nikon bodies and the results were always consistent to the point of being jaw dropping- whether that meant static subjects or birds in flight, you name it. You can see why I decided to comment with that kind of performance. It's my go to lens for action after testing several native lenses in each mount, simply because of its consistent nature of accurate high quality images in any situation. Price has nothing to do with that decision either. Take another look at the Sigma, I say :).
It's great to hear that you like the Sigma so much. At the moment I mainly use the NIKON AF-S 300MM F/4.0E PF ED VR which is amazing to use and leaves the zooms behind. I'm planning another review of this lens soon.
Sure, the one you mentioned is the af-s lens and the one in this video is the af-p version. The af-p version has faster af and is sharper in the 200-300mm range. Be sure to check if your camera works with af-p lenses.
The 70-300mm would work well with the D5600. The even better option would be: 70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4 and 300mm f/4 pf. However, this would be a more expensive solution. If you just want more reach, the Sigma 100-400mm is also a great lens for its price.
I would choose the Nikon. The Tamron isn't that fast than the AF from Nikon. Shooting at minimum focus distance and max zoom can leave your subjects looking slightly hazy on the Tamron. Good Luck!
I am not a fan of superzoom lenses. Yes, they have their uses for people that travel or do not want to change lenses, but they come with too many problems for my taste. I would add the 70-300mm to your current lens.
I have the AF version of this lens, no ED no VR no inbuilt autofocus motor, the autofocus doesn't work on my d3400 because of this. Okay optics, do you think it's worth upgrading from my old one to the AF-P vr one?
I am a beginner looking to step up from a bridge camera for soccer photography. A Nikon 7200 will be the body, will this do a job in low light given its relatively high/variable f-stop?
With your D7200 you will be able to handle higher ISO values much better than with your former bridge camera. In other words, you can compensate for the variable aperture with a higher ISO value. Faster glass (Nikon 70-200 f2.8) is of course even better but this comes with a significant price and weight increase.
good evening again. yesterday I buy the lens. afp 70 300 vr fx for my d7200. the auto Distortion Control, don't work and the AF sometimes, moved. my d7200 updated c 1.04
I shoot RAW only, so don't know about the distortion control. The D7200 should work fine with AF-P lenses : www.nikonimgsupport.com/eu/BV_article?articleNo=000035705&configured=1&lang=en_GB&sfdcIFrameOrigin=null
I have the latest version (AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR) and it is a great lightweight lens for its price. With f/6.3 @300mm you are losing some light against f/5.6 @300mm from the FX version.
Good evening again...I would like to ask your opinion on nikon shots. Nikon claims that D7200 has 1100 shots but I shoot only 400-500, do you think this happens because shots are raw and not jpg?
Hi, a lot depends on whether you use the live view function a lot. That being said, you can also check your battery status in the menu. Buying a new original battery can sometimes work wonders. A faster sd card could possibly help so that the camera can write the images faster. RAW or jpg would in principle not make much difference. Good luck.
The Sigma you mentioned is an aps-c sensor only lens. It's a 'superzoom' with a lot of compromises and suffers from distortion, CA and lack of sharpness. I wouldn't buy it.
Can you please help me. I have D5600 body and I'm looking for 70-300 lens. This one seems nice to me and I think I will buy it next week. I googled a lot and seems this lens is full compatible with my D5600. Thing that bother me is that in future I would like to get FX body (Full Frame Body) and keep this lens and use this it on FX body. Is this lens right choice for me then if we consider that I will be careful when I will chose FX body because not all are compatible with this lens as I see. Or I should go for other 70-300 nikkor lens, and which one? Sorry for my bad English I hope you understand me.
AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR is fully compatible with your D5600 and you'll be able to use it even if you switch to full-frame. Make no mistake, the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300MM F/4.5-6.3G ED VR is the DX version you DO NOT want.

1)nikon af-s dx nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6g ed vr or
2)AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED
The AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR is clearly the lens to go for.
Hello, would a 70-300mm work well for me with a Nikon 5600 or is there a better option?
The 70-300mm would work well with the D5600.
The even better option would be:
70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4 and 300mm f/4 pf.
However, this would be a more expensive solution.
If you just want more reach, the Sigma 100-400mm is also a great lens for its price.
good work and nice and simple way of teaching
Many thanks!
Nikon AF -P 70-300 mm DX vr is the same Lense which you shown in the video or there is a different ? I guess your lense has not Dx version
No, the DX version is a different lens.
The full-frame AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR
(SKU: JAA833DA) is the lens to go after.
Thank you so much have a good day
Good evening, I have I nikon d7200 and I thought to buy this lens or tamron 70 210 f4. Can you help me please
I would choose the Nikon. The Tamron isn't that fast than the AF from Nikon.
Shooting at minimum focus distance and max zoom can leave your subjects looking slightly hazy on the Tamron.
Good Luck!
@@WimBals thanks you very much. You are only person that answers all the questions... thanks again
Hi, is this lens full frame Lens? I have a Nikon d810
Yes this lens is suitable for full frame.
I have Nikon D3400, can i buy this lens for my camera?
Sure you can.
I have Nikon 18- 140 mm VR DX lense. Whether it will be worthy to exchange it for purchass of 18- 300 Nikon VR lense.?
I am not a fan of superzoom lenses. Yes, they have their uses for people that travel or do not want to change lenses, but they come with too many problems for my taste.
I would add the 70-300mm to your current lens.
I have the AF version of this lens, no ED no VR no inbuilt autofocus motor, the autofocus doesn't work on my d3400 because of this.
Okay optics, do you think it's worth upgrading from my old one to the AF-P vr one?
In addition to better image quality, you will also get VR and AF. Definitely an upgrade if you ask me.
@@WimBals Should I go with the DX version or the FX version? the FX version costs around £120 more.
Get the FX version.
Good morning
What kind of computer do you suggest for good photo editing ?
I myself use an iMac with the software Capture One, darktable and Affinity Photo.
A sufficiently large screen is quite useful when you edit photos.
I have this. I agree it's a great lens!
It is!
Faster glass (Nikon 70-200 f2.8) is of course even better but this comes with a significant price and weight increase.
good evening again. yesterday I buy the lens. afp 70 300 vr fx for my d7200. the auto Distortion Control, don't work and the AF sometimes, moved. my d7200 updated c 1.04
the same lens [70 300 fx] it's not problem the ather machine. d3500
I shoot RAW only, so don't know about the distortion control.
The D7200 should work fine with AF-P lenses :

What bag did you place your camera and lens in?
It’s a Canon bag from the M50.
It came with the Canon M50.
Amazing! I wanna use this lens for portraits and also wildlife at the local forest.
Thanks for the information!
Good luck with this lens!
I have D3100 with 70-300mm but it doesn’t work correctly, it doesn’t focus in more than 70… what I can Do?
af-p or af-s?
How is the performance of this lens on Nikon d3400 or d5300,d5600 ?
I would opt for the 70-300mm DX AF-P if you only use it on a DX camera.
So many say that dx is very bad in comparison to vr ?
I have the latest version (AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR) and it is a great lightweight lens for its price.
With f/6.3 @300mm you are losing some light against f/5.6 @300mm from the FX version.
Do i need to have a specific tripod for this or just the normal one, bcs my grip sometimes cant hold it perfectly, great video btw
A normal tripod is sufficient, of course for a camera and not for a smartphone.
It's actually a relatively light lens.
Thxs that got me worried bcs if i just let my camera hold still in a tripod, maybe it will fall off XD
Thank you for the review! 💜
You're welcome.
Good luck.
@@WimBals thanks you very much
How would it be compared to a sigma 18-250 mm??
The Sigma you mentioned is an aps-c sensor only lens.
It's a 'superzoom' with a lot of compromises and suffers from distortion, CA and lack of sharpness.
I wouldn't buy it.
What type of camera bag are you using in this video?
Sorry, it's an unbranded model, the inner dimensions are 25 x 15 X 10 cm.
is this compatible with a D70?
No 🫤
Thank you so much. Excellent review.
Glad you liked it.
Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D850?
Yes, sure.
Thank you for the detailed review 😊🙏🏻
Thanks!
Thanks for this helpful video❤🙏
Glad I could help.
Hello. Is the image quality significantly different from the AF-S 70-300 VR version across the 70-200 and 200-300 focal ranges? Thank you
The sharpness of the AF-S version drops significantly from 220mm while the AF-P version stays sharp.
@@WimBals Thank you for your reply, so is the sharpness at 70-200 of the two lenses much different?
There is also a bit better color rendition and most of all faster autofocus on the af-p.
The quality on the shorter end is quite equal.
Thanks a lot. Wishing you good health
Can i use this lens for Nikon D5200 ?
Hi, yes this lens would work.
Merhaba bu lens nikon d3500 ile kullanılabilir mi?
Yes, this would work.
@@WimBals teşekkür ederim
Sir, is this fit to nikkon D5300?
Yes, sure.
Very insightful, thank you!

Ty for the video but the nikon d800 is not a crop sensor camera...its full frame
Yeah I know, I meant my D500. It's mentioned in the description.
Thank you for your test !
Thanks Benji!!
Thanks a lot, really useful and helpful 👌🙏😊

Hi sir can I use it in Nikon d5300
Hi Aman, you can use this lens on the D5300, just make sure you have the latest firmware installed.
@@WimBals thank u sir..Could u plz make video for beginners photography where we can Learn all concept
I'm currently working on a video with all the basics of photography. So keep an eye on this channel.
Night sir, can i use this lense on my nikon D3200 without any problems ?? Please your answer sir :)
Thank you very much before :D
The af-p will unfortunately not work on the d3200.
The 70-300 af-s, on the other hand, will work on your camera.
Definitely a good lens too.
Tnx for convincing me to keep my Nikon 70-300mm because I am buying the sigma 100-400mm as well but I won’t sell my Nikon lens.
Oh correcting my self. I am having Nikon af-p nikkor70-300mm4.5-6.3 ED probably it’s a different story
Thanks, the Sigma is a lot heavier than the Nikon 70-300mm.
Good to know for hiking
You say "my D800 camera" at Min. 2:10. I assume you mean D500.
Yes, I meant the d500. It was already mentioned in the description that I slipped 😀
Me: (checks eBay) Oh yeah, I'm definitely getting this lens!
Great idea 👍🏼
Nice one
Thanks 🙏
Which camera choose to this lens ?
Help! 🩵
What's your budget?
@@WimBals 2000 € for Lens and camera.
