As for #2, it actually gets scarier and more nameless. Lexicanum has a short entry for so called "Daemon Behemoths". Basically demons that could just stomp Skarbrand, Rainmaker or any daemon primarch, and when manifested in the material world, they come titan-sized. As far as I know, there's not a single named one as they are pretty rare. They don't really belong to any of the chaos gods, though they can be affiliated with them, more as allies than servants. Summoning them is also incredibly difficult, which is why the named greater demons usually get all the fame. The only instance I know of was during the Siege of Terra, when Thousands Sons managed to summon couple of them together with Death Guard. They were described as hunched horned or antlered beasts, reminiscing the goat-like image of the devil of old religions, and none smaller than warhound titan. They were used as siege engines and focus for warp magic that Thousand Sons were using to literally melt walls, and it took a sortie of hundreds of custodians after they've been weakened by some White Scars psyker lightning stikes, because "ordinary" wall guns that could down titans could do no permanent damage to them.

Issue with SM is the table top is the humble guard was meant to be the benchmark to prove how scary everything else is within the universe. And up until recently space marines ended up being that bench mark lol. Lore has the opposite issue where they're too powerful anymore. At least in the beginning of HH books had marines dying left and right to stupid xenos all the time. Favorite is a xenos bat just grabbing SM and dropping them into spikes like it was nothing. Then suddenly books came up where custodes were losers in comparisons. Don't know what happened.

Harlequins are really strong. They even breached into the imperial palace once, killing a buch of custodes on the way, just to deliver a message from Eldrad.
I read the story about the six custodes. They literally defeated the entire tyranid shard while the planet was breaking around them, and finally killed the swarmlord. It was fucking awesome
makes you think that when considering the balance of space marines vs custodes, the present attributes of combat prowess, wisdom, whatever the custodes had in advantage over the space marines would loose out in the long run due to custodes being harder to recreate than space marines. one eventually surpasses the other as the best unit on a long enough time line
The boys in gold are canonically the most named characters in the lore - their name gets longer over time, as long as they live; we just don't know most of their names. Valdor's name takes a good sized book... Funnily enough, there is one unnamed boi that trumps all mentioned ones - the Emperor is only known by the title, never by name, because he eliminated all traces of his name from record.

@@BigBroKuma Twice Dead King and Engine of Mork are pretty great! The former is mostly about the state of Necron minds, machines and relationships and the latter has an ork mutant with access to the intellectual power of a krork!
I love how Transcendant C'Tans are so much scarier than other shards, yet they're the weakest of the bunch in the Tabletop.
I don't play the table top game (nor do i have any interest in doing so) but from what little i DO know about WH-40K is that the books/lore does NOT carry over in to the game accurately at all.
@@barklordofthesith2997 No, it does not. If it did, Necrons and Tyranids would be unstoppable, and Custodes wouldn't even be present. Of course, this is 40k Lore we're talking about here, where one book shows Custodes being gods and the next one deciding a few Harlequin Clowns could slaughter their way past them. 40k in general, and damn near everything about it, is messy and sloppy. Still cool as shit, if a bit frustrating.
Has there ever been a battle between a Necron Overlord vs a Greater Demon?
In any novel or book? Saddly no.

Interestingly, it seems the Harlequin Solitare has a similar ability to a Necron Pariah. They also have negative souls due to formally being human beings that were converted into Necrons. Unfortunately they’ve been mostly phased out, but they were one of the absolute best units Necrons had.
