    Carlos's decision to abdicate deserves praise because he knew and acknowledged that he no longer had any strength left to rule and he knew what to do for the sake of his kingdoms and his people. This decision alone was that of a truly wise king and man.
    It's really sad though that Carlos believed he had failed as Holy Roman Emperor; he did all that he could do for his kingdoms and empire because even he could only do so much, but I don't think he failed. Some of the issues he dealt were well beyond his control, but he and his family did a lot of good for his kingdoms and when he abdicated, he knew he was leaving them in the best hands and he was right.
    I've read some of Carlos's real abdication speech and I find it really moving, especially with how he professed to everyone present his sorrow for causing anyone any pain and how he asked for their forgiveness. It's also very moving reading that many present shed tears, including the Emperor himself.

      Yes his apology is very touching. Many other rulers could have taken (and could still take) him as an example regarding his abdication decision. He realized it was best for everyone and everything if he steps aside and so he did.

    If Isabella was alive, Carlos could have lived a truly peaceful and happy life in his late years, like a second honeymoon. He would have stayed with his beloved wife all day as he wished, far away from difficult political and religious matters. As he said before, he got to have time and quiet after abdication but his soul would be empty until heavenly reunion with Isabella.

      Yes, if Isabel had lived to see Carlos abdicating, I think they probably would've retired together to Granada, the place where they spent their happiest days together and, like you said, lived life like a second honeymoon.

    Wasn't it the case that at his abdication, Carlos was supported by a young William of Orange? Bit of a missed opportunity to leave that founding father of the soon-to-revolt Dutch provinces out of the picture.

      not just that, Charles was a good friend and mentor to both Willem of Orange and the Count of Egmont, his abdication and the subsequent weakness of phillip II under the thumb of the Duke of Alva incited unrest and discontent , culminating with the execution of a lot of nobles in the netherlands that supported autonomy, thus prompting Willem of Orange to do what none had expected: a full on revolt in the spanish netherlands.

      @ThomasL58 5 років тому +6

      William of Orange is the young nobleman that emperor Charles is leaning against in the famous painting of Louis Gallait, right?
      The problem with this series is that was way too short, only a single season. Many important characters were excluded or merged due to meet size constraints. Some of the errors that I find most disturbing are these:
      1. Fredrik the wise of Saxony, who died in 1525, leads the Schmalkaldic league in 1548.
      2. The third duke of Alba, born in 1507, is a ten-years-old grown man with a beard when Charles arrives in Spain in 1517.
      3. Alba is portrayed as the victor at Saint Quentin, rather than the duke of Egmont, whom Alba whould execute a decade later.
